To make a Google Doc into Confluence content, use Confluence Cloud’s built-in importer: open a blank page or live doc, choose More actions (…) → Templates and import → Import → Google Doc, authorize Google if prompted, select the document, and choose Finish. If the document should remain in Google Drive as the source of truth, embed it instead; importing and embedding serve different purposes.
Should I import the Google Doc or embed it?
Import when you want a Confluence page or live doc that can be edited and published in Confluence. Embed when the Google Drive document should remain the maintained source and you want it displayed on a Confluence page.

| Your goal | Choose | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Make Confluence content from the document | Confluence’s native Google Doc import | Creates a Confluence page or live doc from the selected file. [c001][c003] |
| Keep the Google Drive document as the source of truth | Google Drive for Confluence macro | Embeds a Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides file in a Confluence page. Private files may ask viewers to authenticate with Google. [c005] |
| View or edit a Google Doc within Confluence with integration features | A Marketplace integration, such as Google Docs for Confluence by ikuTeam | The listing describes live viewing, editing, real-time updates, and Google Drive permission mirroring. Marketplace licensing and availability can change. [c004] |
Atlassian describes the native importer as a way to bring existing work from Google Docs and other external document formats into Confluence. The importer makes Confluence content; it is not the same as keeping a live Google Drive file embedded. [c001][c003]
How do I import one Google Doc into Confluence Cloud?
Start from a new Confluence page or live doc, then use the import option in its actions menu. The Google account connection is requested if needed.

- In Confluence Cloud, select Create to open a blank page or live doc. You can also use the plus sign beside Content in the sidebar.
- Beside Share, open More actions (…) and choose Templates and import.
- Open the Import tab.
- Choose Google Doc.
- If prompted, connect and authorize your Google account.
- Select the document and choose Finish.
A single imported document becomes its own Confluence page or live doc. It can be modified and published like other Confluence content. [c001][c003]
Can I import several Google Docs at once?
Yes. Confluence Cloud supports bulk import, subject to file-count and size limits. Bulk-imported items are placed under a restricted placeholder so they can be reviewed and organized before publishing or moving.

| Import type | Document or file limit | Where the imported content goes |
|---|---|---|
| One Google Doc | 5 MB for the document, excluding attachments; 10 MB total for one file. [c002] | Its own Confluence page or live doc. [c003] |
| Bulk import | Up to 30 files and 50 MB total; no individual file can exceed 10 MB. [c002] | Child items under a restricted placeholder page or live doc titled with “Imported pages” and date/time information. [c003] |
The placeholder gives the importer a place to check permissions and organize the imported pages before publishing or moving them. Do not treat the bulk-import placeholder as a finished information architecture: review where the pages belong and who should have access. [c003]
What should I check after importing?
Proofread and inspect the Confluence result rather than assuming every Google Docs feature converted exactly. Atlassian does not promise perfect conversion for every feature, and it specifically warns that unsupported image files are replaced with placeholder text. [c006]

The supported image types listed by Atlassian are BMP, CUR, DDS, GIF, ICO, JPG, PNG, PSD, SVG, and WEBP. If an image is in another format, do not assume it will display after import. [c006]
How do I embed a Google Doc instead of importing it?
Use the Google Drive for Confluence app when the document should stay in Drive and be shown within Confluence rather than converted into a Confluence-owned page. Atlassian documents embedding Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides through its Google Drive macro. [c005]

A separate Marketplace app, Google Docs for Confluence by ikuTeam, describes live viewing, editing, real-time updates, and Google Drive permission mirroring. Those are features stated in that app’s listing, not guarantees of Confluence’s native importer; check the current listing and licensing before relying on them. [c004]

Which route fits common transfer situations?
- Retiring a document and continuing its work in Confluence: Import it, then proofread and publish the Confluence page or live doc.
- Keeping a frequently updated Drive document authoritative: Embed it with the Google Drive macro rather than creating a separate imported copy.
- Bringing a batch of documents across: Use bulk import only within its stated limits, then inspect the restricted placeholder and organize its child items.
- Needing live editing or update behavior in Confluence: Evaluate a Marketplace integration whose listing specifically describes those features; verify current availability and terms.
These choices are not interchangeable: native import produces Confluence content, while the Drive macro presents a Drive file in a Confluence page. Choose based on which system should own ongoing edits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does importing a Google Doc delete the original in Google Drive?
The import documentation describes creating Confluence content, but does not specify whether the original Drive file is changed or deleted. If retaining the original matters, verify it in Drive after the import rather than treating the importer as a move or deletion tool.

Can I import Google Docs comments into Confluence?
Atlassian’s import guidance does not establish that Google Docs comments are preserved. If comments contain decisions or action items, capture the information your team needs and verify its presence in the Confluence result.
Can I import a Google Doc that uses an image format not on Atlassian’s supported list?
Atlassian says unsupported image files are replaced with placeholder text, so conversion is not assured for an unlisted format. Convert or replace those images with a supported type before importing, then inspect the finished page.
