Samsung currently offers the clearest long-term commitment, but only on specific generations. The Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S26 series are promised seven generations of operating-system upgrades and seven years of security updates from each series’ global launch. Motorola does not publish one support term for every phone: its schedule is model-, region- and channel-specific. For example, Motorola’s EMEA listing for the moto g75 5G shows security updates through October 2030, but that date cannot be applied to other Moto models. The reliable way to compare phones is to check the exact model number, count OS upgrades separately from security-update coverage, and verify the local carrier or regional variant.
Which brand offers longer Android support right now?
For the named current flagships covered by the manufacturers’ announcements, Samsung has the longer and more clearly stated commitment. Samsung says the Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S26 series each receive seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates, counted from global launch.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That is not a promise for every Galaxy phone, and it is not evidence that every Samsung handset will outlast every Motorola handset. Samsung’s 2022 policy gave selected Galaxy devices up to four OS-upgrade generations and up to five years of security updates. Motorola’s public information must be checked phone by phone; a midrange Motorola with a later security end date could outlast an older Galaxy model.
The practical verdict is therefore conditional: a Galaxy S25 or S26 is the safer choice when a long, published support horizon is the priority, while a Motorola purchase requires an exact-device lookup before you can make a fair comparison.

What is the difference between OS upgrades and security updates?
They measure two different parts of a phone’s useful life. An OS upgrade is a major new Android or manufacturer software release. Security support is the period during which the manufacturer continues supplying patches for newly discovered vulnerabilities, even when the phone does not receive every major Android release.
OS-upgrade generations
“Seven generations of OS upgrades” counts major operating-system releases, not the number of years you personally own the phone. A device launched near the start of an Android release cycle may receive its first upgrade sooner than a device launched late in that cycle, but the manufacturer’s stated count remains tied to the product generation.

They can also arrive in stages, so the announcement of a seven-generation entitlement does not mean every region receives each version on the same day.
Security-update duration
A security term describes how long the manufacturer intends to publish security fixes for the model. It is best treated as a separate end date or duration. A phone can still be receiving security patches after its final major Android upgrade, and a phone may receive an OS upgrade while its security-patch delivery is delayed by testing or carrier approval.
When comparing two phones, write down both figures. “Seven years of support” is incomplete unless you know whether it means seven years of security patches, seven OS generations, or both.
What support is promised for the Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S26?
Samsung’s official product announcements give the same headline commitment for these two series: seven OS-upgrade generations and seven years of security updates from global launch. The two series were announced in different years, so their calendar end dates are different even though the duration is the same.

| Galaxy series or policy | Promised OS upgrades | Promised security support | Starting point and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S26 series | Seven generations | Seven years | From the global launch date; Samsung qualifies availability and timing by product, network provider and market. |

| Selected Galaxy devices in Samsung’s 2022 announcement | Up to four generations | Up to five years | Applies only to the selected devices covered by that announcement, not to every Galaxy model. |
The word “up to” matters in the older policy. It describes a ceiling for eligible devices rather than a universal Galaxy entitlement. A buyer should therefore identify the exact series and generation instead of assuming that an older Galaxy inherits the S25/S26 term.

Samsung’s sustainability reporting describes Galaxy mobile security support as “up to seven years,” while also qualifying availability and timing by product and market. That wording reinforces the need to check the specific model and sales region.
How long does Motorola support its phones?
Motorola’s support system is model-specific. Its security-support page asks you to select a product and warns that devices not listed will no longer receive OS or security updates. Motorola also says its published plans can change, and that region, sales channel, carrier certification, testing and maintenance releases can affect the schedule.
What the moto g75 5G example shows
Motorola’s EMEA support listing for the moto g75 5G identifies Android 14 as the launch operating system and lists security updates through October 2030. That is a concrete calendar date for that EMEA listing, not a Motorola-wide guarantee and not a date that automatically applies to the same family in another market.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The listing is useful because it demonstrates how Motorola presents support: by exact product and region. It does not establish how many major OS upgrades every moto g75 5G receives, and it cannot be used to infer the schedule for another Moto phone.
Why Motorola does not yield a single brand-wide number
Different Motorola models can launch in different regions, use different carrier variants and have different support plans. The company’s own lookup is therefore more authoritative than a generic statement such as “Motorola phones get four years” or “Motorola phones get two upgrades.” Those blanket figures can be wrong for a particular model or market.
Does Samsung always outlast Motorola?
No. Samsung has the strongest named commitment in this comparison, but support is an exact-model question rather than a permanent brand ranking.
A Galaxy S25 or S26 has a published seven-year security term. An older Galaxy covered by the 2022 policy may have up to five years of security coverage. A Motorola model launched later, with a documented end date, could have more remaining support at the moment you buy it than an older Samsung phone whose term is already partly used.

Compare these items for the two phones you are considering:
- The complete model name and model number, including storage or regional variants where shown.
- The Android version installed at launch and the number of OS generations explicitly promised.
- The security-update end date or duration, including the date from which the manufacturer counts it.
- Your country, carrier and purchase channel, because certification and regional schedules can change delivery.
- The phone’s actual launch date, not your purchase date. Buying a handset later does not normally restart the manufacturer’s support clock.
If a manufacturer provides only a support end date and not an OS-upgrade count, record the end date without guessing the missing count. A precise partial comparison is more useful than an invented number.
How can you check the support for your exact phone?
Use the phone’s model identifier first, then consult the manufacturer’s support page for the matching region. These steps avoid confusing a product family with the particular variant in your hand.
- Open the identity screen. On the phone, go to Settings > About phone. Record the marketed model name, model number and any software or carrier designation shown there.
- Confirm the sales region. Note the country where the phone was sold and whether it is carrier-branded, unlocked or imported. Two phones with nearly identical names can have different update schedules.
- Check Samsung’s model-specific policy. For a Galaxy device, match the exact series and generation against Samsung’s support commitment. Do not apply the S25/S26 seven-year term to an older model unless Samsung explicitly includes it.
- Use Motorola’s product selector. Select the exact Moto model and the relevant market. Motorola’s page is the appropriate place to find a listed security end date; if the device is absent, Motorola says it is no longer receiving OS or security updates.
- Record two separate results. Write down the OS-upgrade entitlement and the security-support duration or end date in separate fields. If one is not stated, leave it unconfirmed rather than substituting a brand average.
- Recheck before buying. Manufacturer plans and regional schedules can change. A current support-page result is more dependable than an old retailer listing or a forum post.
Why can two owners receive the same update at different times?
A support term describes how long updates are intended to be available; it does not promise simultaneous delivery. Samsung and Motorola both acknowledge variables that can move the date for a particular user.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCarrier certification
Phones sold through a network provider may require carrier testing or approval before a release reaches customers. This can make a carrier variant receive a patch later than an unlocked version of the same basic model.
Regional testing and regulations
Manufacturers may validate firmware separately for countries or regions. The EMEA date shown for the moto g75 5G is therefore meaningful for that listing, but it should not be presented as a worldwide Motorola deadline.
Model and channel differences
Different chipsets, modem configurations or sales channels can require different firmware packages. Even within one named series, the model number is the safest way to identify the relevant schedule.

Maintenance releases
Security patches and maintenance releases can be staged rather than delivered as one global event. A phone may remain inside its promised support window while a particular monthly or quarterly patch is still undergoing testing.
When you evaluate a phone, ask two separate questions: “How long is support promised?” and “How quickly does my variant normally receive it?” The first is a lifespan question; the second is a delivery-cadence question.

Start with the date you expect to keep the phone, then work backward from the manufacturer’s stated support horizon. A seven-year commitment is most valuable when the model is new enough that most of those years remain available to you.
If you want the clearest published commitment
Choose a Galaxy S25 or S26 only after confirming that the model and market match Samsung’s announcement. Their seven OS generations and seven security years provide a straightforward baseline for a long ownership period.
If you are considering a Motorola phone
Find the exact product in Motorola’s support lookup before purchase. Treat the listed security end date as model- and region-specific, and do not infer the OS-upgrade count unless Motorola states it for that device.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If price or age makes an older flagship attractive
Calculate remaining support from today, not the original headline term. An older Galaxy may have started with a generous policy but have fewer years left. The same logic applies to a Motorola model that is already partway through its published schedule.
If update speed matters as much as longevity
Investigate your exact carrier and region. A long end date does not guarantee that every patch arrives immediately, and a short delay does not by itself mean the device has lost its support entitlement.

What are the most common mistakes in support comparisons?
- Using one number for everything. “Seven years” can refer to security updates, while OS upgrades are counted as generations. Keep the measures separate.
- Applying a flagship promise to an entire brand. Samsung’s S25/S26 commitment does not automatically cover older or lower-tier Galaxy phones.
- Generalizing one Motorola date. October 2030 belongs to the EMEA moto g75 5G listing, not to every Motorola device.
- Ignoring the counting start. Samsung counts the stated term from global launch, not from the day an individual buyer activates the phone.
- Confusing availability with delivery timing. A phone can be within its support window while a carrier or regional rollout is still pending.
- Trusting a product-family name without the model number. Regional and carrier variants can have different schedules.
- Assuming an unlisted device has an undisclosed extension. Motorola’s guidance says devices not listed will no longer receive OS or security updates, so an absent model should be treated accordingly.
What is the most defensible Motorola-versus-Samsung conclusion?
For the specific phones documented here, Samsung leads on clarity and duration: Galaxy S25 and S26 each carry a seven-generation OS and seven-year security promise from global launch. Motorola can still be competitive for an individual model, but the answer depends on the exact support record for that phone and market.
Before choosing, compare the two model numbers side by side, document the remaining OS and security terms, and verify the carrier or regional variant. That process avoids both common errors: overstating Samsung’s policy as universal and understating Motorola by relying on a brand-wide guess.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does buying a phone later extend its software-support period?
No. The published horizon is tied to the product’s launch or the manufacturer’s stated starting point, not to the date you activate or purchase it. A later purchase therefore gives you fewer remaining months within the same support window.
What information should I save when checking a support page?
Save the exact model name, model number, region, carrier status and the date you checked. Keeping those details lets you detect when a support page changes and prevents you from comparing a different regional variant by mistake.
Is a security end date the same as the date an OS upgrade stops?
Not necessarily. Security coverage and major OS-upgrade eligibility are separate fields, so a manufacturer can stop major-version upgrades while continuing security patches. Treat an explicitly stated security end date as its own deadline.
Why might an unlocked phone update before a carrier version?
Carrier versions can require additional certification and testing before firmware is released. That approval step can create a delay even when both variants remain inside the manufacturer’s promised support period.
