For the quickest snowballs, use a shovel without Silk Touch on existing snow. A full Snow Block drops four snowballs, while each layer drops one, up to eight from a full eight-layer stack. For a renewable supply, confine a Snow Golem over a block that supports snow layers and repeatedly shovel the layer it creates. In the documented Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 6, craft four snowballs into one Snow Block, then arrange four Snow Blocks in a 2×2 grid to make four Snow Bricks according to the contemporary recipe guide. Snow Bricks are testing-version content as of October 30, 2026, not a confirmed feature of the ordinary release.

Mojang’s Java changelog confirms the 2×2 Snow Block arrangement, while the Bedrock Edition Preview 26.70.22 changelog confirms the new block set but does not publish an exact recipe or output. Treat the Java recipe and the reported four-brick yield as Java snapshot information, and back up worlds before loading snapshots or previews.

Which snowball route should you use?

Choose based on whether you need an immediate batch or a repeatable source. Existing snow has no construction cost but depends on finding a snowy area. A Snow Golem collection point costs two Snow Blocks and a carved pumpkin or jack-o’-lantern, then gives you a renewable layer to break manually.

Route Setup What you collect Best use
Harvest existing snow A shovel and accessible Snow Blocks or snow layers Four snowballs from a full Snow Block; one per snow layer Starting a project immediately or filling a shortfall
Snow Golem collection point Two Snow Blocks, a carved pumpkin or jack-o’-lantern, and a suitable floor block Regenerated snow layers that you break with a shovel Repeatable manual collection near a base
Silk Touch harvesting A shovel with Silk Touch The intact Snow Block instead of loose snowballs Moving blocks directly to the Snow Brick crafting stage

Neither route has a documented, publisher-measured snowballs-per-minute rate. Compare them by setup time, access to snow, inventory space, and whether you want loose snowballs or intact Snow Blocks.

What versions contain Snow Bricks?

As of October 30, 2026, Snow Bricks are documented in Minecraft: Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 6 and Minecraft: Bedrock Edition Preview 26.70.22. Mojang published the Java snapshot changelog on October 27, 2026, and the Bedrock preview changelog on October 28, 2026. These are development builds, so a player on the normal current release should not assume Snow Bricks are available.

The Java changelog states: “Snow Bricks can be crafted from 2×2 Snow Blocks.” The same changelog says Snow Bricks only drop themselves when mined with a shovel and that Snow Brick slabs, stairs, and walls cannot be made with a Stonecutter. The Bedrock preview announces Snow Bricks and says they do not melt, but the examined preview notes do not specify the input grid or output count. Read the Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 6 changelog and the Bedrock Preview 26.70.22 notes for the build you are running.

How to enable the Java snapshot safely

  1. Open the Minecraft Launcher and select the Java Edition installation controls.
  2. Enable snapshots in the installation or version selector, then choose 26.4 Snapshot 6 when it is offered.
  3. Use a separate game directory or a copy of the world rather than opening an important survival world directly.
  4. Back up the world before loading it. Mojang warns that testing versions can corrupt worlds, and snapshot blocks or recipes can change before release.

The exact launcher labels can change between Launcher versions. If Snapshot 6 is no longer offered, check Mojang’s changelog and the current snapshot listing before changing an existing world.

How do I harvest existing snow for snowballs?

When snow is already available, this is the shortest path from terrain to crafting materials. Use a shovel without Silk Touch if the result you want is a stack of loose snowballs.

  1. Equip a shovel. Any shovel material works for the basic collection action; leave Silk Touch off when you want snowballs rather than intact blocks.
  2. Find a full Snow Block or a stack of snow layers. Do not substitute Powder Snow: it is a different block with different handling.
  3. Break a full Snow Block with the ordinary shovel. The documented result is four snowballs.
  4. For a thin snow layer, break the layer itself. Each layer yields one snowball, so an eight-layer stack can provide up to eight snowballs as it is removed layer by layer.
  5. Move the drops into your inventory, then craft them into Snow Blocks as soon as you have groups of four.

The Snowball entry on the Minecraft Wiki documents the four-snowball Snow Block yield and the one-snowball-per-layer behavior. It also notes that Fortune does not increase these yields. The number is a game-mechanic yield, not a timed farm result.

Silk Touch or an ordinary shovel?

Silk Touch changes the objective. A Silk Touch tool retrieves the Snow Block itself instead of converting it into four snowballs. That is useful when you already have complete blocks and want to place them directly into the Java Snow Brick recipe. It is the wrong choice when you need loose snowballs for a Snow Golem or when you want to count out four-snowball crafting batches.

Switching tools midway can save crafting time: use Silk Touch to move intact Snow Blocks, and a non-Silk-Touch shovel to mine layers or blocks for loose material. Keep the two purposes separate so you do not accidentally collect blocks when you expected snowball drops.

How do I build a repeatable Snow Golem collection point?

A Snow Golem can continually create snow layers in a suitable location. The collection point is a manual farm: you repeatedly shovel the generated layer, rather than relying on a verified automatic production rate.

Materials and startup cost

  • Two Snow Blocks.
  • One carved pumpkin or jack-o’-lantern.
  • A shovel for removing the generated layer.
  • A floor block on which the golem can leave snow and that you can reach without hitting the golem.

If you craft both starting Snow Blocks from snowballs, the startup cost is eight snowballs. The Snow Golem construction requirements are described in the Snow Golem article.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Construction steps

  1. Place one Snow Block on the floor.
  2. Place the second Snow Block directly on top of the first, forming a two-block column.
  3. Place the carved pumpkin or jack-o’-lantern last. The last placement activates the column as a Snow Golem.
  4. Confine the golem so it cannot wander away, while leaving the floor area exposed where it can generate a snow layer.
  5. Stand where you can target the snow-covered floor block without swinging at the golem.
  6. Use the shovel on the regenerated layer, collect the snowball, and repeat when another layer appears.

The snow-farming tutorial at Minecraft Wiki’s snow-farming guide describes a minimal 1×1 arrangement. Its important condition is not the footprint alone: the chosen floor must support a snow layer in the edition and location where you build. If no layer appears, test the floor block and move the collection point rather than assuming every surface behaves identically.

Make the collection point safer and easier to use

  • Use a barrier, wall, or other enclosure that keeps the golem in place but leaves your shovel target visible.
  • Keep spare shovels nearby. Repeated manual breaking consumes durability, and an empty hotbar can interrupt a collection session.
  • Leave inventory slots open for snowballs. Snowballs stack to 16, so loose drops fill slots faster than Snow Blocks.
  • Light and protect the area as appropriate for your world. The collection method depends on the golem producing a layer, not on a claimed universal automatic design.
  • Do not promise identical behavior across Java and Bedrock. The cited tutorial and the official notes do not establish that one enclosure design works unchanged in both editions.

This setup is repeatable but not hands-free. A redstone timer, hopper arrangement, or claimed snowballs-per-minute figure is not established by the cited material, so plan around manual shovel passes.

How many snowballs do I need for Snow Bricks?

Use the recipe chain rather than guessing from the final block count. Four snowballs craft one Snow Block. The Java snapshot then uses four Snow Blocks in a 2×2 arrangement; the contemporary recipe guide reports that this arrangement outputs four Snow Bricks.

Target Snowballs Snow Blocks Reported Snow Bricks
One Java snapshot recipe batch 16 4 4
64 Snow Bricks 256 64 64

The arithmetic is 4 snowballs per Snow Block, then 4 Snow Blocks per reported four-brick output. The 2×2 input is official Java snapshot information; the four-brick output is reported by the independent Minecraft Guides Snow Bricks recipe page. Because this feature is in testing, verify the output in the exact snapshot or preview you are using before committing a large build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inventory planning

Snowballs stack to 16, while Snow Blocks stack to 64. One full stack of 64 Snow Blocks represents 256 snowballs, so converting loose drops into blocks reduces the number of occupied slots substantially. The conversion is reversible: mining a Snow Block without Silk Touch recovers four snowballs according to the Snowball and Snow Block documentation.

For a 64-brick Java target, carry or store 256 snowballs, or craft them into 64 Snow Blocks as you collect them. If you are gathering from a Snow Golem, turn in batches of four during breaks instead of allowing loose snowballs to consume every inventory slot. If you are using Silk Touch on existing blocks, you can skip the loose-snowball stage and count blocks directly.

How do I craft Snow Bricks in Java Snapshot 6?

After you have Snow Blocks, the documented Java recipe is a simple 2×2 arrangement. Do not place four loose snowballs in this recipe: those four snowballs make one Snow Block first.

  1. Open a crafting table or another crafting interface that accepts a 2×2 recipe.
  2. Place one Snow Block in each of the four cells of a square: top-left, top-right, bottom-left, and bottom-right.
  3. Take the Snow Brick output shown by the recipe book or crafting grid. The contemporary guide reports four Snow Bricks from the four-block input.
  4. Store the bricks or place them with the appropriate building tool. For later mining, use a shovel if you want the Snow Brick block to drop itself in the Java snapshot.

The official wording is limited to the input arrangement, so keep the output attribution separate from the input claim. Do not assume a Stonecutter can produce Snow Brick slabs, stairs, or walls: the Java changelog explicitly rules that out.

What changes between Java and Bedrock?

Java and Bedrock are not equally documented for this feature. Use the Java recipe only where the Java snapshot confirms it, and treat Bedrock’s preview information as incomplete until Mojang publishes the recipe details for that build.

Edition/build Confirmed in the cited notes What remains unconfirmed
Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 6 Snow Bricks; 2×2 Snow Block input; shovel requirement for dropping the block itself; no Stonecutter variants Future release timing and whether later snapshots alter the recipe or output
Bedrock Edition Preview 26.70.22 Snow Bricks are announced, and the preview says they do not melt Exact input grid and output count in the examined changelog
Ordinary released versions No confirmation from these notes that Snow Bricks are present Availability depends on the release version installed

Before starting a long build, open the recipe book in your exact edition and version. Snapshot and preview content can move, change names, or be removed. Keep a backup or a disposable test world for development builds.

Why is my snowball collection not working?

The shovel gives a Snow Block instead of snowballs

Check for Silk Touch. Silk Touch is supposed to preserve the intact Snow Block; switch to a shovel without Silk Touch when you need loose snowballs.

Breaking a Snow Block gives no useful result

Confirm that you are using a shovel and that the block is actually a Snow Block rather than Powder Snow or a thin snow layer. The documented four-snowball result applies to a full Snow Block mined with the appropriate ordinary shovel.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The Snow Golem does not leave a layer

Inspect the floor block and the golem’s position. The farming tutorial’s method depends on a surface that supports a snow layer, and edition-specific rules can differ. Rebuild the target on a suitable block with the golem confined above it, then wait for a layer before shoveling.

The golem is being hit while I collect

Change your viewing angle or add a partial enclosure so the shovel targets the floor, not the golem. Keep the golem contained and the snow layer visible; striking the golem defeats the purpose of a safe collection point.

The recipe book does not show Snow Bricks

Check that you launched the intended snapshot or preview rather than the ordinary release. Java Snapshot 6 and Bedrock Preview 26.70.22 are testing builds, and the Bedrock notes cited here do not publish the Java recipe’s exact input or output.

What should you avoid when collecting snowballs?

  • Do not treat a snapshot as a release feature. Enable development builds deliberately and protect valuable worlds with backups.
  • Do not use four snowballs as the Snow Brick input. Four snowballs first become one Snow Block; the documented Java Snow Brick recipe uses four Snow Blocks.
  • Do not confuse blocks, layers, and Powder Snow. Their drops and handling differ.
  • Do not add Silk Touch accidentally. It preserves Snow Blocks instead of producing the loose snowballs needed for a Snow Golem startup.
  • Do not infer Bedrock parity from Java. The examined Bedrock preview announcement does not establish the Java 2×2 recipe or the four-brick output.
  • Do not plan around an invented throughput number. The cited sources provide yields and a repeatable manual method, not a verified snowballs-per-minute statistic.
  • Do not expect Stonecutter variants in Java Snapshot 6. Mojang’s changelog explicitly excludes Snow Brick slabs, stairs, and walls from Stonecutter use.

What is the practical fastest plan?

If you are standing in a snowy biome, start with existing Snow Blocks and an ordinary shovel. Break enough for your immediate build, craft every four snowballs into a Snow Block, and keep those blocks in stacks of up to 64. If natural snow is scarce but you have the materials, spend eight snowballs to start a Snow Golem, confine it over a suitable floor, and return to the layer as it regenerates.

For Java Snapshot 6, reserve 16 snowballs for each reported four-brick batch, or 256 snowballs for 64 reported Snow Bricks. Verify the recipe and output in the exact development build before mass-crafting, especially on Bedrock, where the cited preview announcement does not specify the recipe.

Frequently asked questions

Does Fortune increase snowball drops?

No. The documented Snowball mechanics state that Fortune does not raise the four-snowball Snow Block yield or the one-snowball-per-layer yield. Fortune therefore is not a reason to replace a normal shovel for this task.

Can I recover snowballs after crafting Snow Blocks?

Yes. Mining a Snow Block without Silk Touch is documented as recovering four snowballs. This lets you consolidate storage during a build and later convert blocks back to loose snowballs when you need them.
