Use Minecraft Java snapshots for testing, not on the only copy of a world you care about. Mojang warns that testing versions can corrupt worlds. Before opening a valuable save in a snapshot, make a separate backup and keep an untouched copy outside the folder you use for testing. You can select a release installation in the Launcher to play that version again, but switching versions does not guarantee that a world changed by a snapshot can be safely opened or restored.
This guide covers Java Edition. The Launcher steps here do not apply to Bedrock Edition, and compatibility depends on the particular snapshot and world.

What is a Minecraft snapshot, and how is it different from a release?
A snapshot is a testing version of Minecraft Java Edition. It lets players try changes before they are part of a regular release. A release is the version you choose when you want to play without opting into a testing build; snapshots should be treated as experimental rather than as a guaranteed stable upgrade path.
What a snapshot changes varies by build. Notes can include gameplay adjustments as well as technical changes that matter to data packs or resource packs. Read the notes for the exact build you plan to use, rather than assuming that details from one snapshot apply to another.

For example, the Java Team’s notes for Minecraft 26.3 Snapshot 10, dated August 25, 2026, list gameplay adjustments and technical details including data-pack version 118.0 and resource-pack version 97. Those figures describe that build; they do not establish that it is the newest snapshot or that other builds use the same versions.
Can I use a snapshot world in the normal version?
There is no blanket compatibility guarantee for a world that has been opened or saved in a snapshot. Mojang warns that testing versions can corrupt worlds, and the official material available here does not promise that a snapshot-modified save can be safely opened by an older release.
Keep two questions separate: which game installation you launch, and which copy of the world you open. Selecting a release in the Launcher changes the version you run; it does not reverse changes already made to a save. If you want to return to a release, use your untouched pre-snapshot copy if the changed world will not open or you need to recover it.
Do not use your main save to test whether a particular snapshot can be downgraded. If you need to check compatibility, make a disposable copy and treat the result as specific to that build and save—not proof that other worlds or snapshots will behave the same way.

How do I enable snapshots in the Minecraft Launcher?
For Java Edition, snapshot access is enabled in the Launcher’s Installations area. These are the steps established by Mojang’s snapshot instructions; they are not Bedrock Edition directions.

- Open the Minecraft Launcher and go to Installations.
- Enable snapshots in the Launcher.
- Before starting a snapshot, make and verify a separate copy of any world you may want to keep.
- Review the notes for the specific snapshot, including any gameplay, data-pack, or resource-pack changes relevant to your setup.
- Launch the snapshot and select only the copy you intend to test.
The key safety choice is not merely which version to launch; it is which world copy that version can access. Mojang recommends backing up and/or running testing versions in a different folder from main worlds. Keeping testing separate reduces the chance that you select a main save by mistake.
How should I back up a world before testing?
Make a separate copy before opening the world in a snapshot, then keep an untouched copy somewhere the testing setup will not use. Do not experiment on the sole copy of a valuable save. A separate storage location can be another folder or an optional external drive or SSD; special hardware is not required.
A practical backup checklist
- Identify the world you intend to test and make a copy before launching the snapshot.
- Keep the original or another known-good copy untouched and outside the folder used for snapshot testing.
- Use a separate testing location if possible, following Mojang’s recommendation to keep testing versions apart from main worlds.
- Make sure you can distinguish the test copy from the original before choosing a world in-game.
- Do not treat a copy that has already been opened and saved in a snapshot as the untouched backup.
A backup is useful only if it remains separate from the test. If both copies are exposed to the same testing workflow and you cannot tell which one is original, you may have no reliable recovery copy. Mojang’s warning is a precaution, not a claim that every snapshot will corrupt every save.

How do I go back to the latest release?
Select the release installation you want in the Launcher rather than the snapshot installation. If the world you tested does not work in that release, or you want to recover the earlier state, use the untouched copy you made before testing.

Can snapshots affect data packs or resource packs?
They can involve technical changes relevant to packs, so check the notes for the exact snapshot before using it with a world or pack setup. Minecraft 26.3 Snapshot 10, for instance, lists data-pack version 118.0 and resource-pack version 97; those are build-specific details, not universal compatibility numbers.

The available official information does not establish a compatibility matrix covering every snapshot, release, world, and pack. If a pack matters to your setup, do not infer compatibility from its behavior in a different build. Keep a pre-test world copy and consult the notes for the version you plan to launch.
What should I do if the world fails after testing?
Stop experimenting on the affected copy and preserve it as-is; repeated attempts with different versions can make it harder to tell what happened. Select the release you intend to use, then try the untouched pre-snapshot copy if recovery is needed.
- The world will not open: do not assume that switching to a release repairs it. Try the pre-snapshot copy instead.
- The world opens but looks different: do not overwrite your untouched backup with that copy. The available guidance does not establish a universal way to reverse snapshot changes.
- You cannot identify the backup: avoid further changes until you can distinguish the original from the test copy. Do not guess which save is safe to restore.
- You need platform-specific restore steps: check current Minecraft support documentation for your operating system; no universal restore workflow is established here.
Keep the affected copy if you need to investigate further, but treat the untouched backup as the recovery option—not as proof that a damaged test copy can be repaired.

Use a snapshot on a copy when the world is valuable, when pack compatibility matters, or when you are not prepared to accept a testing-version risk. A disposable world is a more appropriate place to explore changes when preserving a particular save is not the goal.
