For most families, Switch 2 is the better Minecraft machine when portability and four-player couch co-op matter; a Windows PC is better for mouse precision, higher and more tunable performance, mods, and Java servers. Switch 2 runs Bedrock Edition only. A Windows PC purchase includes both Java and Bedrock, but the PC player must launch Bedrock to play with Switch 2, Xbox, PlayStation, or mobile players. Java and Bedrock cannot join the same worlds or Realms.
The native Switch 2 release arrived on 27 October 2026 with Vibrant Visuals, but Nintendo and Mojang have not published an official frame-rate or resolution target. Independent measurements found roughly 22–30 fps in Vibrant Visuals and 30–32 fps in performance mode, while a reviewer described a 60-fps target with drops. Reports of 120 fps are not yet an official specification.

Can you play Minecraft Switch 2 with a friend on PC?
Yes, but both players must use Bedrock Edition. The Switch 2 native game is Bedrock, and the Windows launcher lets its owner choose Bedrock or Java; choosing Java puts the PC player on a separate network that Switch 2 cannot join.
The edition rule
Bedrock cross-play covers Windows 10/11, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Android or iOS devices. Java cross-play is limited to Windows, macOS and Linux Java clients. Java and Bedrock cannot enter each other’s worlds or Realms, and Mojang has no official bridge between them.

How to join a Switch 2 friend from Windows
- Sign in to a Microsoft account on the Switch 2 and on the PC.
- On Windows, open Minecraft and select Bedrock Edition, not Java.
- Add the other player’s Microsoft gamertag in the Friends tab.
- Have one player create or load a Bedrock world with multiplayer enabled.
- On Switch 2, open the Friends tab and join the listed world. The Switch player also needs Nintendo Switch Online for online multiplayer.
The same Bedrock route works with Xbox, PlayStation and phones. A PlayStation player uses the Bedrock network but PlayStation store spending uses Tokens rather than Minecoins.

Choose according to the people and the way you play. Switch 2 is the self-contained console for handheld use, TV play and up to four players on one screen. PC is the stronger choice for precision controls, adjustable visuals, Java content and avoiding a console online subscription.
Pick Switch 2 when the household wants couch co-op
- Bedrock supports up to four players in local split-screen on one console.
- Handheld, tabletop and TV modes use the same native game.
- The Nintendo-exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up Pack includes 15 music tracks and 40 player skins, and it is updated for Vibrant Visuals.
- It connects directly to Bedrock friends on Xbox, PlayStation, phones and Windows.
- The native download is 1.5 GB according to the Nintendo eShop.
Split-screen has a visual trade-off: Vibrant Visuals is disabled while split-screen is active.
Pick Windows PC Bedrock for the easiest console cross-play with better controls
- Keyboard and mouse, controller and touch are all supported.
- There is no Nintendo Switch Online fee for Windows Bedrock’s Microsoft network layer.
- PC exposes finer render-distance and graphics controls than Switch 2.
- Bedrock can use ray tracing on a DirectX Raytracing-capable GPU with compatible Marketplace content.
- It is generally the lighter PC edition. Mojang describes Bedrock as smoother on less powerful devices than Java.
Pick PC Java for mods and Java servers
- Java supports the established mod ecosystem, community shader packs and older game versions.
- Large Java servers, including Hypixel and similar networks, require the Java client.
- Java runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
- Java has no native controller support, so a gamepad is not an official input option.
Java cannot join the Switch 2 player, even when both games are signed into the same Microsoft account.
How we picked
The ranking weighs the edition needed for cross-play, input options, graphics controls, local multiplayer, platform fees, portability, mod and server access, and the hardware requirements documented for each edition.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does Minecraft on Switch 2 have mouse mode?
No. At launch, the native Switch 2 build offers analog-stick controls and touchscreen input, but no mouse mode and no motion controls. Switch 2 Joy-Con hardware can act as a mouse in other software, yet Minecraft does not expose that function in Bedrock 26.60.
Switch 2 controls
Game8’s 26.60 settings comparison lists controller input, while Nintendo’s eShop listing identifies the touchscreen as a supported feature. Touch can be useful in handheld mode for inventory and menu interaction, but aiming and building remain stick-driven when the console is docked.

Nintendo Life reviewer Mitch Vogel called the omissions unusually limited, noting that touchscreen controls are present but motion control and mouse mode are absent. That means a player who expects mouse-like block placement or keyboard shortcuts will find the PC version substantially more precise.
PC controls
Windows Bedrock exposes three input profiles: keyboard and mouse, controller, and touch. Java is built around keyboard and mouse and does not include native controller support. Game8 also found PC-only video options for input-response improvement and a Classic or Pocket-style UI profile; Switch 2 does not show those toggles.

Does Switch 2 Minecraft run at 60 fps or 120 fps?
There is no single confirmed answer. Nintendo and Mojang publish no official Switch 2 frame-rate or output-resolution target. Nintendo Life describes a 60-fps target with occasional drops, while Game8’s measurements of 60-fps recordings found around 22–30 fps with Vibrant Visuals and 30–32 fps in performance mode. Player reports of 120 fps are unverified and depend on settings and capture limits.
| Version and setting | Load time in Game8’s same-world test | Observed frame rate | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows PC Bedrock | About 2.8 seconds | About 53–59 fps in daytime scenes; 57–58 fps around a bee swarm | Game8, 2026 |
| Native Switch 2, Vibrant Visuals | About 19.6 seconds | About 22–30 fps daytime; 26–30 fps around a bee swarm | Bedrock 26.60; Game8 counted frames from 60-fps recordings |
| Native Switch 2, performance or quality-priority mode | About 20.3 seconds | About 30–32 fps daytime; about 30 fps around a bee swarm | Bedrock 26.60; Game8, 2026 |
| Original Switch version running on Switch 2 hardware | About 12.6 seconds | About 29–38 fps daytime; about 30 fps around a bee swarm | This is the backward-compatible version, not native Switch 2 software |
Game8’s capture method removed duplicate frames from 60-fps recordings, so it could not observe 120 fps. Overseas player reports cited by Ludens Media and a 28 October settings video by Lifey Guy claim that disabling Vibrant Visuals and reducing render distance can produce a stable 120 fps, with reports of up to 1440p in TV mode and 1080p handheld. Those figures are not Nintendo or Mojang specifications.
The apparent conflict is therefore explainable: a 60-fps target is a developer or reviewer description, Game8 measured roughly 30 fps in the launch graphics modes, and a 120-fps claim may require reduced settings that were not measured by Game8. Treat the latter as a launch-week player report until an official specification or repeatable independent measurement confirms it.
Why can the older Switch version load faster?
On the same Switch 2 console, Game8 measured about 12.6 seconds for the original Switch version versus about 19.6–20.3 seconds for the native build. Native rendering adds the Vibrant Visuals pipeline and new assets, so “native” does not automatically mean a shorter initial load. Mojang and Nintendo have continued issuing Switch 2 fixes for split-screen performance, connection stability and Vibrant Visuals preview glitches.
What does Vibrant Visuals add on Switch 2?
Vibrant Visuals is the native Switch 2 edition’s default graphics mode and Minecraft’s largest official visual enhancement. It adds directional lighting, volumetric fog, dynamic shadows and reflective water through a newer graphics pipeline.

The video settings allow a flatter look instead, along with options such as shadow quality, reflections, bloom and TAAU or bilinear upscaling. Switch 2 performance mode recommends 20 chunks, while Vibrant Visuals shows a 16-chunk display distance in Game8’s comparison. The original Switch version lacks these sliders; Game8’s PC example showed a 45-chunk performance-mode setting.
Vibrant Visuals is not available during split-screen or in certain Marketplace worlds and content. Switch 2 does not support ray tracing. Bedrock’s ray-tracing feature remains available on a compatible Windows GPU with compatible Marketplace content, but it was not selectable on Game8’s test PC.
Java’s visual route is community shaders and mods rather than Switch 2’s Vibrant Visuals. Do not install Java shader packs on Switch 2; that edition cannot run Java.

Every cross-platform player needs a Microsoft account. The platform subscription depends on the device: Switch 2 online play requires Nintendo Switch Online, while Windows Java and Windows Bedrock do not require a Nintendo, Xbox or PlayStation platform subscription.
| Platform | Edition | Platform subscription | Account requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 | Bedrock | Nintendo Switch Online for online multiplayer and cloud saves | Microsoft account plus Nintendo Account |
| Windows | Bedrock | None for the Microsoft/Xbox network layer | Microsoft account |
| Windows, macOS or Linux | Java | None beyond the game purchase or included subscription entitlement | Microsoft account |
| Xbox | Bedrock | Game Pass Essential or above | Microsoft account |
| PlayStation | Bedrock | PlayStation Plus | Microsoft account plus PlayStation account |
Realms still uses the console platform subscription when a console player connects. Prices reported by Gamers Together from Minecraft’s 19 October 2026 listing were $3.99 per month for Bedrock Realms (host plus two), $7.99 for Bedrock Realms Plus (host plus ten and the Marketplace Pass catalogue), and $7.99 for Java Realms (host plus ten). That guide also reported a first month free for new subscribers; check the live listing before purchase.
Local, wireless and online player counts
Switch 2 supports up to four local players on one screen. Sources list two to eight players for local wireless or online sessions, depending on the mode and listing. PC and mobile do not offer split-screen, so each player needs a separate device.
Servers and Realms
Bedrock Dedicated Servers can accept Switch 2 clients, and featured partner servers are a Bedrock feature. Consoles cannot type an arbitrary server address and port in the way PC and mobile clients can, so a Realm or a featured server is usually the practical route. Java servers remain a separate ecosystem.

How much does Minecraft Switch 2 cost, and is the upgrade free?
The native release date was 27 October 2026 in the US and UK; some Australian stores displayed 28 October because of time-zone timing. Nintendo store figures reported in 2026 list three digital editions.
| Edition | US digital price | Included content |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $29.99 | Base game, Vibrant Visuals and Super Mario Mash-Up Pack |
| Deluxe Collection | $39.99 | Standard content plus Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs, Plenty O’Blocks, three Character Creator items and 700 Minecoins |
| Ultimate Collection | $49.99 | Deluxe content plus Decocraft and Weapons + Tools, five Character Creator items and 1,000 Minecoins |
Digital Nintendo Switch owners
Mojang’s free digital upgrade window runs from 27 October 2026 at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time through 31 January 2027 at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time. Digital owners of Minecraft for Nintendo Switch can claim the digital Standard Edition for Switch 2 at no charge in most territories through the Nintendo eShop.
The listed exceptions are Japan, where the upgrade costs 100 JPY; Taiwan, 30 NTD; and Thailand, 25 THB. Digital owners can instead buy Deluxe or Ultimate at a discount, but Nintendo has not published fixed upgrade prices for those tiers. Third-party observations of roughly 75% off Deluxe and 60% off Ultimate should not be treated as a permanent price list.
Physical cartridge owners
A physical Switch cartridge does not receive the free Standard digital SKU. It continues to run through backward compatibility without native Vibrant Visuals. During the same window, launching the original version can display an in-game message offering a discounted path to the digital Ultimate Collection. The physical Standard Edition is sold as a Game-Key Card.
Nintendo and Mojang support carrying worlds over from Nintendo Switch. The native Switch 2 game is nevertheless a separate product from the backward-compatible Switch version.
Minecoins and platform wallets
Minecoins bought on a Nintendo Switch device from 27 October 2026 must be spent in the Nintendo ecosystem. Minecoins bought elsewhere cannot be spent on Nintendo. Balances that existed before 27 October remain in a Legacy Wallet and continue working across platforms. Gift cards can exclude Nintendo, so read the platform list on the card before buying.

A Windows PC purchase bundles Java and Bedrock in one entitlement. PC Game Pass also includes the Java and Bedrock bundle, so a subscriber can launch Bedrock for a Switch 2 friend without buying Minecraft a second time. macOS and Linux run Java Edition only.
Why is Minecraft lagging on Switch 2?
Launch-week performance depends heavily on the graphics mode, scene complexity and patch level. Start with the settings that reduce rendering work, then check whether the problem is network-related rather than frame-rate-related.
- Open the video settings and switch from Vibrant Visuals to performance or quality-priority mode.
- Reduce render distance and simulation distance, especially in villages, farms or areas with many entities.
- Disable reflections, bloom or other optional visual effects where the menu permits it.
- Update Minecraft and the Switch 2 system; Bedrock 26.60 already includes fixes for split-screen performance, connection stability and Vibrant Visuals preview glitches.
- For online stutter, test a local world. Smooth local play with delayed multiplayer actions points to the network or the host rather than the renderer.
Reducing render distance and turning Vibrant Visuals off is also the combination cited in player reports claiming 120 fps, but that result is not an official guarantee. The native build’s measured launch loads were slower than the backward-compatible Switch version, so reinstalling the native edition is not a proven performance fix.
Which setup is the cleanest choice for a mixed household?
The simplest arrangement is a Switch 2 for portable and couch play plus a Windows PC that keeps both editions installed. Use PC Java for mods and Java servers; launch PC Bedrock whenever the other players are on Switch 2, Xbox, PlayStation or mobile.
If there is only one purchase to make, choose Switch 2 for local multiplayer and portability, Windows Bedrock for mouse control and console cross-play, or Java for the mod and server ecosystem. Digital Switch owners should claim the free Standard upgrade before 31 January 2027 at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time; physical cartridge owners should not assume they qualify.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to buy Minecraft twice on a Windows PC?
No. The Windows Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition purchase is one bundle that lets you launch either edition. PC Game Pass also includes that bundle, although the subscription price is separate and can change.
Will my old Nintendo Switch worlds appear on Switch 2?
Mojang and Nintendo say worlds from Nintendo Switch can be carried over. That statement covers the Switch-to-Switch 2 transition; it does not mean a Java save can be opened in Bedrock or that Java and Bedrock saves synchronize automatically.
Can a Switch 2 player enter any custom Bedrock server address?
Not in the same way as PC and mobile players. Console clients cannot type an arbitrary address and port, so Switch 2 players generally use featured Bedrock servers, a Realm, or an invitation to a friend’s world.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat happens to Minecoins I bought before the Switch 2 version launched?
Balances that existed before 27 October 2026 remain in Minecraft’s Legacy Wallet and continue to work across platforms. New Minecoins purchased through Nintendo after that date are restricted to the Nintendo ecosystem, while Minecoins bought elsewhere cannot be spent on Nintendo.
