Choose Java snapshots if you want to follow Minecraft’s Java development track on a Windows, macOS or Linux computer. Choose Bedrock Preview on supported consoles, Windows or iOS, or Bedrock Beta on Android, if you need to test the Bedrock track. Neither is permanently “first”: the useful choice depends on the exact feature, its dated changelog and whether the build requires a world-level experiment.
A Windows PC can run both editions, while an Xbox can run Bedrock Preview but not Java snapshots. Whichever route you use, treat it as disposable testing: Mojang warns that development versions can corrupt worlds, and experimental Bedrock worlds cannot be returned to a non-experimental state.

Which edition should you choose for testing new Minecraft features?
Use the development channel that matches the edition you normally play. Java Edition snapshots expose Java’s upcoming changes through the Minecraft Launcher. Bedrock Preview and Android Beta expose Bedrock’s upcoming changes on their supported devices. The two programs are separate codebases and separate distribution routes, not two names for one universal beta.
| Your situation | Best route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You develop or play on Windows, macOS or Linux and want Java changes | Java snapshot | Snapshots are enabled from the Launcher’s Installations tab. |
| You use Xbox, PlayStation, Windows or iOS and want Bedrock changes | Bedrock Preview | Preview is the supported Bedrock testing application or channel on those platforms. |
| You use an Android phone or tablet | Bedrock Beta | Android joins the beta through the Minecraft listing in Google Play. |
| You need to play with friends while testing | Match everyone’s edition and build | Java and Bedrock do not ordinarily share multiplayer servers, and Bedrock testers need matching Preview or Beta versions. |
Do not select an edition merely because its version number is newer or because a feature appeared in one changelog first. Read the changelog for the build you can install, then check the feature’s required toggle and platform limitations.

What are Java snapshots, Bedrock Preview and Bedrock Beta?
A Java snapshot is a pre-release build of Java Edition distributed through the official Minecraft Launcher. It is aimed at desktop Java players and developers who want to see changes before a formal release. The launcher lets you create or edit an installation and enable snapshots from the Installations tab. The official edition guide explains the distinction between Java’s snapshot route and Bedrock’s Preview/Beta route (Minecraft’s Java and Bedrock overview).
Bedrock Preview is the Bedrock testing channel for supported non-Android platforms. Current guidance identifies Xbox, PlayStation, Windows and iOS as Preview platforms, although availability and enrollment rules differ by device. Bedrock Beta is the Android equivalent, joined through Google Play. On Android, the beta replaces the ordinary Bedrock client, so a world backup is especially important before enrollment.
These channels can contain unfinished features, balance changes, technical experiments and bug fixes that never ship unchanged. A development build is therefore useful for feedback and early access, but it is not a promise that every listed feature will reach the next stable release.
How are a development build and an experimental world setting different?
Installing a snapshot or Preview does not automatically activate every feature discussed in its notes. The build and the world’s experimental settings are separate decisions.
In Java, some early content appears only when you create a world with the relevant feature toggle enabled. The toggle is selected during world creation, and the snapshot’s notes should identify when it is required. A normal snapshot world and a world created with an experimental feature are not equivalent: the latter carries additional upgrade risk.
In Bedrock, the Experiments controls belong to the world. A feature may require you to enable an experiment while creating a new world, and some Bedrock builds also permit experiments on an existing world. The official Bedrock explanation warns that a world with experiments enabled cannot be restored to a non-experimental state (Bedrock experimental-features guidance).
Always read the notes for the exact build. Do not infer that an announced block, mob or mechanic is active by default, and do not reuse an old list of experiment names as if it were the current menu.

Which devices support each testing route?
Java snapshots are a desktop-only route for Java Edition. The supported operating systems are Windows, macOS and Linux. Bedrock spans more device types, but its testing access is divided by platform.
| Platform | Java snapshots | Bedrock Preview or Beta | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Yes, with Java Edition ownership | Yes, with Bedrock access | A Windows PC can provide access to both editions, but each installation still follows its own testing channel. |
| macOS or Linux | Yes | No native Bedrock route listed in the current guidance | Use Java snapshots for the desktop development track. |
| Xbox One or Series X|S | No | Preview | Find Minecraft Preview in the Xbox Store; ownership or entitlement conditions can apply. |
| PlayStation 4 or 5 | No | Preview | Digital owners are directed to Minecraft’s Settings → Preview path; availability is not an automatic guarantee for every account. |
| iPhone or iPad | No | Preview through TestFlight | TestFlight capacity is limited, so enrollment may not be open when you check. |
| Android | No | Beta through Google Play | The Beta client replaces the normal Bedrock client while you are enrolled. |
Device support can change, so verify the current platform instructions before assuming that a console or mobile account qualifies. The official Java/Bedrock comparison and current Preview help pages are safer references than an old platform list copied from a previous update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow do I enable Java snapshots?
Use a separate installation and a disposable test world. The process is short, but the safety steps matter more than the checkbox.
- Confirm Java access. Sign in to the Microsoft account that owns Java Edition on a supported Windows, macOS or Linux computer.
- Open the Minecraft Launcher. Go to Installations and create a new installation or edit an existing one.
- Enable snapshots. Turn on the option that allows snapshot versions, then select the target snapshot from the version list. Avoid pointing a stable installation at a snapshot unless you intentionally want that profile to remain experimental.
- Read the snapshot notes. Check the release date, known issues, required feature toggles and any warnings about world conversion. The notes for a later snapshot can change the instructions you followed for an earlier one.
- Separate your saves. Create a new test world, or use a separate game directory for testing. Back up any important Java saves before launching the snapshot.
- Enable only the required world feature. If the notes specify a feature toggle, create a new world and select it there. Do not assume a toggle can be safely removed later.
- Launch and observe. Test the feature in the disposable world, record the snapshot number when reporting a bug, and avoid opening valuable production worlds from the snapshot profile.
Minecraft’s testing guidance states: “Testing versions can corrupt your world, so please backup and/or run them in a different folder from your main worlds” (official testing guidance). This is a practical instruction, not a theoretical warning.
How do I join Bedrock Preview or Android Beta?
First identify the device, then use that platform’s official enrollment method. Preview and Beta are not interchangeable labels, and the Android process has a different risk because it replaces the ordinary app.
Windows Bedrock Preview
- Confirm that you own or have access to Bedrock Edition on Windows.
- Open the official Minecraft Preview entry or the launcher’s Bedrock testing option, depending on the current Windows distribution.
- Install or launch Preview separately from your stable Bedrock profile when the platform offers both applications.
- Read the build notes and create a new test world before enabling any required Experiments.
Do not assume that a Windows Bedrock Preview installation is the same thing as a Java snapshot. A Windows PC can host both editions, but each edition has its own worlds, version numbers and multiplayer compatibility rules.

- Open the Xbox Store and search for Minecraft Preview.
- Check the account’s ownership or entitlement requirements before installing.
- Launch Preview, review the displayed build notes and use a separate test world.
Xbox provides a Bedrock Preview route, not a Java snapshot route. If a feature is documented only in a Java snapshot, installing Preview on Xbox will not expose it.

PlayStation Preview
- Start the digital Bedrock edition on the PlayStation account that owns it.
- Use Minecraft’s Settings → Preview instructions for your console generation.
- After enrollment or installation, confirm the Preview build on the title screen before opening a test world.
Console access can depend on the edition purchased and the account’s eligibility. Do not promise Preview access to every physical-copy or shared-library owner without checking the current help page.
iOS Preview
- Look for the official Minecraft Preview TestFlight invitation.
- Join only if a TestFlight place is available; capacity is limited.
- Back up important worlds and use a new test world after installing the Preview build.
TestFlight availability is controlled by capacity, so a missing invitation does not mean the iOS platform has been permanently discontinued.
Android Beta
- Open the Minecraft listing in Google Play using the account that owns Bedrock Edition.
- Join the beta program, then allow Google Play to update the app.
- Back up worlds before the update. Android Beta replaces the ordinary Bedrock client while you are enrolled.
- Check the beta build notes and create a separate test world. Enable Experiments only when the notes require them.
Because Beta replaces the regular client, do not enroll immediately before an important multiplayer session or a world you cannot afford to lose. Keep a known-good backup and wait for a stable release if the save is essential.

Do I need to turn on Experiments to see a Bedrock feature?
Sometimes, but not always. The build notes for the exact Bedrock Preview or Beta version are the authority. Some changes are active as soon as the development build starts; others require an Experiments setting on a new or existing world.
When an experiment is required, create a clearly named test world and enable only the relevant switch. Bedrock labels the resulting world as experimental, and the official guidance says it cannot be converted back to a normal non-experimental world. That limitation affects long-term survival worlds, Realms planning and any save you hope to carry into a future release.
For Java, look for a feature toggle during world creation rather than searching Bedrock’s Experiments menu. A Java world created with a feature toggle may not upgrade cleanly to later snapshots or releases, so treat it as a one-purpose test environment.
Can I use my main world in a snapshot or Preview?
You can technically open some existing worlds, but you should not use your main world for feature testing. Development builds may change data formats, generate unfinished terrain or introduce bugs that damage a save. Experimental toggles add another layer of one-way compatibility risk.

- Back up first. Make a restorable copy using the backup or export controls available on your platform.
- Prefer a new world. Reproduce the feature in a disposable creative world whenever possible.
- Separate folders or profiles. For Java, Minecraft specifically recommends a different folder from your main worlds when running testing versions.
- Label the build. Include the snapshot or Preview/Beta number in the world name and bug report.
- Do not roll forward casually. A world opened in a newer development build may not behave correctly when reopened in an older build or stable release.
The official Bedrock changelog describes these builds as work in progress and cautions that they “can be unstable and may not be representative of final version quality” (Bedrock Beta/Preview 26.70.22 notes).
How should I compare Java and Bedrock changelogs?
Compare feature notes, not just release dates. Start with the feature name, then verify the edition, build number, platform, required toggle and known limitations.
- Find the dated entry. Use Minecraft Feedback for Java snapshot and Bedrock Beta/Preview notes.
- Search for the exact feature. A similar name may describe different implementations in Java and Bedrock.
- Check availability. The note may limit the feature to a platform, a world type or an experiment.
- Check dependencies. New blocks, recipes or commands may require another toggle or a companion change.
- Read known issues. A feature can be present but unsuitable for a valuable world because of crashes, rendering errors or conversion warnings.
- Record the build. Version labels are identifiers, not performance scores and not proof that one edition is permanently ahead.
A useful current example comes from the research date. Java 26.4 Snapshot 6, published October 27, 2026, and Bedrock Beta/Preview 26.70.22, posted October 28, 2026, both discuss snow bricks and Cold Sulfur Cubes. That overlap shows how to compare changelogs; it does not prove exact feature parity, identical mechanics or a permanent release lead. Recheck the live notes whenever you plan a new test.

| Question to ask in the changelog | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the feature in this exact build? | Announcements can cover a future build, while an installed build may not contain the change. |
| Is it enabled by default? | Java feature toggles and Bedrock Experiments can hide otherwise documented content. |
| Is it available on my device? | Bedrock Preview access differs between Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, iOS and Android. |
| Does it affect existing worlds? | World conversion and experimental-state warnings can make testing irreversible. |
| Can friends join? | All participants may need the same development build and edition. |
Can Java and Bedrock players test together?
Do not assume ordinary cross-edition multiplayer compatibility. Java snapshots use Java servers and clients; Bedrock Preview and Beta use Bedrock networking. A Java player and a Bedrock Preview player generally cannot join the same ordinary server simply because both are testing a similarly named feature.
Within Bedrock, players testing together need compatible Preview or Beta versions. A stable Bedrock client may not be able to join a development build, and two different Preview builds can be incompatible after a breaking update. Confirm everyone’s version number before troubleshooting worlds or network settings.
Eligible Bedrock Realms subscribers may have a separate testing-Realm option, but that is distinct from an ordinary Realm and still follows the current build and eligibility rules. Do not move a valuable Realm world into an experimental workflow without a verified backup and a clear recovery plan.
What should I do when a feature is missing?
Most “missing feature” reports come from the wrong edition, wrong build, a disabled world experiment or an unsupported platform.

- Verify the title screen. Confirm that you launched Java Snapshot, Bedrock Preview or Android Beta rather than the stable client.
- Verify the version number. Compare it with the changelog’s exact identifier and publication date.
- Check the world settings. Recreate the world with the required Java feature toggle or Bedrock Experiment.
- Use the correct edition. A Java-only feature will not appear in Bedrock Preview, and a Bedrock-only feature will not appear in a Java snapshot.
- Check platform restrictions. A feature can be present in Bedrock notes but unavailable on the device or enrollment channel you use.
- Test in a new world. Existing worlds may not receive newly generated content in already explored areas, and an old world may lack the required experimental state.
If the build crashes or damages a test save, close it, restore the backup and avoid reopening the original in another development version. Keep the build number and relevant world settings with any bug report so the issue can be reproduced accurately.
Which route is safer for a long-term world?
Neither route is appropriate for a world you cannot replace. A stable release is the safer choice for a primary survival world, a shared family world or a Realm that must remain available. Use snapshots, Preview and Beta for isolated experiments, command tests, creative prototypes and feedback.
Java offers more desktop flexibility because you can keep a separate launcher installation and game directory. Bedrock offers broader device access, but Android Beta replaces the normal client and Bedrock experimental worlds remain permanently marked as experimental. Those differences make Java easier to isolate on a computer, while Bedrock is the practical choice when your friends or hardware are tied to consoles or mobile devices.
Java snapshots vs Bedrock Preview: a final decision checklist
- Choose Java snapshots for Java-specific features, desktop development on Windows/macOS/Linux and launcher-based profile separation.
- Choose Bedrock Preview when you play on Windows, Xbox, PlayStation or iOS and need the Bedrock feature track.
- Choose Android Beta when Android is your Bedrock device and you accept that the beta replaces the regular client.
- Check the dated changelog before deciding which edition is “ahead.” Version numbers are labels, not comparative statistics.
- Check world requirements for Java feature toggles or Bedrock Experiments.
- Back up and isolate every test world. Never treat a development build as a safe upgrade path for your main save.
- Match friends’ editions and builds before attempting multiplayer testing.
The practical answer is therefore conditional: test Java features with Java snapshots, test Bedrock features with Preview or Android Beta, and let the specific changelog—not a permanent ranking—determine which route to install.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Minecraft Preview the same as Minecraft Beta?
They are Bedrock testing channels for different platform groups. Current guidance uses Preview for supported Windows, Xbox, PlayStation and iOS access, while Android joins Beta through Google Play; the names do not indicate two levels of quality or a universal release order.
Can I install Java snapshots on an Xbox?
No. Xbox provides a Bedrock Preview route, not the Java Edition launcher and its snapshots. To test Java changes, you need Java Edition on a supported Windows, macOS or Linux computer.
Will a feature tested in Preview definitely ship in Bedrock?
No. Preview and Beta content is work in progress and can change, be delayed or be removed. Treat each changelog entry as a build-specific implementation rather than a promise about the final release.
Why can’t my friend join my Bedrock Beta world?
Check that both players are using the same Bedrock testing channel and a compatible build number. A stable client, a different Preview build or a Java client may be unable to join even when the players are on the same platform network.
