Yes. Minecraft Dungeons II supports online co-op, cross-play between its supported platforms, couch co-op, and mixed parties in which players sharing one device join friends online. A party can contain up to four players total, including local players. Friends on different platforms can join with an eight-character party code, while matchmaking can find teammates or fill open slots. The game launched on September 29, 2026, for Windows, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Console online play requires that platform’s online subscription; on PS5, the store listing specifically requires PlayStation Plus.
Is there co-op in Minecraft Dungeons II?
There are four practical ways to play: alone, locally on one device, online with remote players, or in a mixed session that combines local and remote players. The official overview describes online cross-play, while the co-op deep dive confirms that couch co-op works in both offline and online modes. That means a pair of people on one console can join friends who are playing elsewhere instead of needing one device per player.

| Mixed co-op | Local players plus remote friends | Internet | Up to four total |
These options are described in Minecraft’s Dungeons II overview. The sequel’s mixed mode is a notable change from the first game’s offline-only couch arrangement: one local group can now open that session to people online.
How many players can join a Minecraft Dungeons II party?
The maximum is four players total: one player plus up to three others. The limit applies to the entire party, not separately to each console or PC. For example, two people on one Switch and two friends on other devices fill the party; a fifth player cannot join until someone leaves.

The four-player figure comes from Minecraft’s June 7, 2026 launch announcement, which describes solo play or co-op with up to three additional players. The announcement gives the cap as a product specification, not as a recommended group size or a matchmaking population statistic.
Can you play Minecraft Dungeons II with friends on another platform?
Yes. Cross-play is part of the game’s online co-op design, so a party can combine supported PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo players. Platform does not prevent a friend from joining through the party-code system, provided everyone is playing on a supported platform and has online access where required.
The official platform list is:
| Platform | Included in the official list |
|---|---|
| PC | Windows and Steam |
| Xbox | Xbox Series X|S |
| PlayStation | PlayStation 5 |
| Nintendo | Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 |
Use the official platform overview as the reference for the supported list. It does not establish support for older console generations or any platform not named there, so do not assume that an unlisted device can join a cross-play party.
Can local and online players play together?
Yes. Mixed co-op lets players on the same device remain a local group while remote players join through the internet. The local players share one console or computer, and each person still occupies one of the party’s four places.

- Minecraft Dungeons Ultimate Edition
Example: two players at home and two online
- Start a couch co-op session on the shared device.
- Keep the session online rather than limiting it to offline play.
- Give the remote friends the current party code, or invite them through the game’s available social tools.
- Once two remote players join, the four-player limit is reached.
This arrangement is useful when a household has one screen or one console but still wants to play with people elsewhere. It also works in reverse: a remote player can join a session that already includes local players, as long as the party has room.
How do you get everyone into the same party?
The most platform-neutral method is an eight-character party code made from letters and numbers. The code is unique to the current party, and friends enter it in the game’s “join by party code” dialog. Minecraft says the code can connect players through the lobby or an ongoing game, regardless of which supported platform each person uses.
Joining with a party code
- Have the player who is creating the group open a party or game session.
- Display the current eight-character code.
- On each friend’s device, open the “join by party code” dialog.
- Enter the letters and numbers exactly as shown and submit.
- Confirm that everyone appears in the party before starting the next activity, or join the ongoing session if the leader is already playing.
The same co-op deep dive also describes matchmaking. Players can search for other people or fill remaining party slots instead of coordinating a code. Matchmaking considers factors such as core quest progress, region, and power level, so the resulting group is intended to be more compatible than a completely random search.

What platforms support Minecraft Dungeons II?
Minecraft lists six platform families or storefront targets: Windows, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Windows and Steam are separate entries in the official list, so check the edition and storefront you intend to use before buying or installing.
The listed release date is September 29, 2026. The platform list is an availability statement, not a promise that every edition has identical performance, controls, display options, or local-player setup. Those details can vary by hardware and edition even though the co-op party system is designed for cross-play.
Do you need a subscription for online co-op?
On consoles, the launch announcement says online co-op requires a platform-specific online subscription sold separately. The requirement is not presented as one universal Minecraft fee; it depends on the platform’s current service terms.
For PlayStation 5, the PlayStation store listing explicitly says PlayStation Plus is required for online play and supports up to four online players. Do not transfer that named requirement to Xbox or Nintendo without checking the current terms for those platforms. A player can still use the game’s offline local co-op option where the edition supports it, but remote online players require the relevant online access.

How does cross-platform progression work?
The developer article says hero data is stored online. Linking your platform accounts to the same Microsoft account lets you continue with the same hero on another supported platform, rather than treating every device as an unrelated character.
There is an important qualification: using a hero on another person’s device depends on whether that platform supports the behavior. Account linking therefore improves portability, but it is not a guarantee that every combination of platform, edition, or shared device will behave identically. Sign in with the intended Microsoft account and verify the platform’s support before relying on a device-to-device handoff.
How does Minecraft Dungeons II handle online sessions?
According to the official co-op article, Dungeons II uses dedicated servers instead of making the party leader’s hardware host the entire online game. The game chooses a server for the party based on each player’s ping, with the goal of providing a more stable experience across platforms and regions.
This design addresses a weakness described for the first Dungeons: if the leader had a poor connection or weaker hardware, everyone could feel the impact. The dedicated-server explanation is a statement from the developer article, not an independent performance test, so actual latency can still vary with a player’s internet connection, location, and network conditions.

What should you check when a friend cannot join?
Most setup problems can be narrowed down without changing the party format. Check the following in order:
- Party capacity: make sure fewer than four players are already in the group, counting anyone sharing a device.
- Code accuracy: request the current eight-character code and re-enter its letters and numbers in the “join by party code” dialog.
- Platform support: confirm that each device is Windows, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, or Nintendo Switch 2.
- Online entitlement: on consoles, verify the platform’s required online subscription; PS5 online play specifically requires PlayStation Plus.
- Account setup: use the intended Microsoft account if the player needs access to an online-stored hero across platforms.
- Session timing: if the leader is already in a game, use the current party code to join the ongoing session rather than an older lobby reference.
If a code still fails after those checks, recreate the party and share the newly displayed code. The code is unique to the current party, so an earlier code should not be treated as a permanent friend ID.

Which co-op setup is best for your group?
| Your situation | Best starting option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Everyone is on separate devices | Online cross-play | Each player joins remotely, including across the listed platforms. |
| Two or more people share one screen | Couch co-op | Local players use one device and can remain offline if no remote friends are needed. |
| A household wants to play with remote friends | Mixed co-op | Local players occupy part of the four-player party while remote players join online. |
| You want teammates without arranging a group | Matchmaking | The game can search for players or fill open party slots. |
The choice is mainly about where players are located and whether an internet connection is needed. All four players still share the same party ceiling, regardless of whether they joined locally, by code, through invites, or through matchmaking.
Is Minecraft Dungeons II co-op available on every edition?
The official sources establish the game and the six supported platform targets above, but they do not provide a complete edition-by-edition purchasing or retail guide. Confirm the format, storefront, and current listing for your region before buying. Co-op functionality should be evaluated against the platform support and online-subscription rules, not against an assumed physical or digital package.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can matchmaking place me in a Minecraft Dungeons II game that has already started?
Yes. The co-op deep dive says matchmaking can place a player into a session already underway. It also considers factors including core quest progress, region, and power level when looking for a suitable group.
Does the party leader’s internet connection host the whole game?
No. Minecraft says Dungeons II moved to dedicated servers and selects the server using the party’s player pings. That reduces dependence on the leader’s hardware, although a player’s own connection and distance from the selected server can still affect latency.

Hero data is stored online, and linking platform accounts to one Microsoft account can let you continue with the same hero on another platform. The developer qualifies this with “if the platform supports it,” so shared-device use is not universally guaranteed.
