You can move a live site from shared hosting to a dedicated server with little or no visible downtime by building and testing the new server first, then making a brief, controlled DNS change. Keep the shared account online while you copy files, databases, mail and scheduled jobs; lower DNS TTL 24–48 hours beforehand; freeze new writes for the final synchronization; and retain the old server until traffic, HTTPS, forms, background jobs and email all pass acceptance checks. A rushed account copy or an untested DNS change is what turns a routine migration into an outage.
Why move from shared hosting to a dedicated server?
Shared hosting places many customers on one operating system and divides CPU, memory, disk and network capacity among them. A dedicated server gives your applications the machine’s reserved resources, more control over the operating-system and service configuration, and a clearer performance ceiling. That can matter for busy stores, large databases, resource-intensive background work or workloads that need custom firewall and runtime settings.

The trade-off is operational responsibility. You must choose and maintain the operating system, web server, database, PHP or other runtimes, security updates, backups, monitoring, mail configuration and licenses unless the plan includes managed administration. A dedicated server also costs more than a shared account, so confirm that your traffic, reliability requirements or compliance needs justify the move before scheduling it.
What should I record before starting?
Create an inventory while the old site is still working. The inventory becomes your migration checklist and gives you a baseline for testing the replacement.

Domains and DNS
- List every primary domain, parked domain, addon domain, subdomain and staging hostname.
- Export the complete DNS zone, including A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, verification and service records.
- Record whether DNS is hosted at the registrar, the old host or a separate DNS provider, and confirm that you can change records or nameservers.
- Note redirects, URL rewrites and any hard-coded hostname or IP address in application settings.
Application and server dependencies
- Record PHP, database and other runtime versions, enabled extensions, web-server modules, image libraries and local configuration files.
- List databases, database users, privileges, connection strings, storage paths, writable directories and file-permission requirements.
- Export every cron entry and scheduled task, including its command, working directory, user, timezone and expected frequency.
- Document external APIs, webhook callbacks, payment notifications, allow-listed IP addresses, queues and workers.
Mail, security and certificates
- List mailboxes, aliases, forwarders, autoresponders, quotas and any catch-all address. Determine whether messages are stored locally or with a separate mail provider.
- Record SSL certificates, private keys, certificate-chain files, renewal method and which hostnames each certificate covers.
- Capture firewall rules, SSH or control-panel access, administrator accounts, intrusion-prevention settings and backup schedules.
How should I prepare DNS and backups?
Lower the DNS TTL for records that will change to 300–600 seconds (five to ten minutes) 24–48 hours before the cutover. This reduces the time that many resolvers retain the old address, although some networks can cache records longer than the stated TTL.
- Export or photograph the current DNS zone and save it outside the hosting account.
- Set the relevant A and AAAA record TTLs to 300–600 seconds. If you will change nameservers, lower the TTL on the delegation-related records where your DNS provider permits it.
- Create a complete backup of web files, databases, mail data and configuration. Download copies and keep more than one copy in separate locations.
- Restore at least one backup to a test location or staging server. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption, not a recovery plan.
- Write down the backup timestamp and the latest database transaction or uploaded file that it contains; this becomes the starting point for the final synchronization.
Do not cancel the shared account after making a backup. It must continue serving visitors while the dedicated server is prepared and while DNS caches expire.
How do I provision the dedicated server correctly?
Choose the operating system, control panel and software stack before copying data. Size CPU, memory, storage and network capacity for peak demand, not only the current average, and verify firewall, SSH or WHM access, licensing and backup capacity.
Match versions before transferring
For a cPanel transfer, the replacement should have identical or compatible MySQL or MariaDB, PHP, extensions, Apache and related service versions. cPanel warns that mismatched MySQL or MariaDB versions can produce serious errors. Match the old environment first; update software after the transfer and compatibility checks when possible.

Configure the foundation
- Apply the provider’s security baseline, create an administrator account with strong authentication and restrict SSH or panel access to approved users or networks.
- Set the server hostname, timezone, resolver configuration, firewall policy, intrusion protection and monitoring.
- Allocate IPv4 and IPv6 addresses and confirm that reverse DNS can be set for services that need it.
- Install the web server, database engine, required runtime extensions, mail components and certificate-management tools.
- Configure a tested backup destination before importing production data.
Ask the host whether migration assistance is included, which control panels are supported, whether administration is managed or self-service, how backups are retained, what network and storage limits apply, what service-level commitment is offered, and how IPv4, IPv6 and DNS are handled. These details often matter more than the headline CPU specification.
Should I use an automated transfer or migrate manually?
Use an automated account transfer when you have the required administrative access and a compatible control-panel environment. Use a manual migration when the old host grants only a customer-level login, when the stacks differ substantially, or when you need precise control over what is rebuilt.

|---|---|---|
| Access required | Usually root or WHM access to the source and destination | A hosting login, SFTP or SSH, database export access and mail-export access |
| Compatibility control | Fast when operating-system and service versions are compatible; mismatches can break imports | More control to change runtimes, database versions and directory layouts deliberately |
| Mail and SSL coverage | Can carry account mail credentials, website content, databases, database users, passwords and privileges when the account transfer supports them | Each mailbox, message store, certificate, key and renewal process must be copied or recreated |
| Expected disruption | Live-transfer features can synchronize changes and perform a final DNS switch, but configuration still determines downtime | Usually requires a planned final sync and DNS cutover; omissions are more likely if the inventory is incomplete |
| Rollback | Simple if the old server remains online and DNS can be reverted | Also reversible, but you must track every manual change on both systems |
| Support and cost | Often faster and may be covered by a provider’s migration service; confirm current eligibility and fees | More staff time, but no dependency on a panel-transfer feature |
In WHM, cPanel’s Transfer Tool can move one or more accounts. Its Live Transfer option is intended to synchronize the source and destination and perform a final DNS switch to reduce disruption. If you lack root access to the shared host, ask the new host whether it can perform a provider-led migration; otherwise plan a per-site manual move.
How do I copy the site and its services?
Do the initial copy while the shared account remains live. The exact commands vary by host, but the order below prevents common omissions.

- Create the destination account and directories. Reproduce domains, document roots, database names, users, quotas and writable paths. Keep a mapping of old and new paths.
- Copy files. Use the control panel’s transfer function, SFTP, SSH or a provider migration tool. Preserve ownership, permissions, symbolic links, hidden files and upload directories. Compare file counts and total sizes after the copy.
- Export and import databases. Use a consistent export, import it into the destination engine and recreate users with the least privilege required. Update application configuration with the new host, database name, username, password, port and socket settings.
- Recreate runtime settings. Enable every required PHP or other runtime extension, set memory and upload limits, reproduce web-server modules, and copy environment variables without exposing secrets in public directories.
- Move mail. Recreate mailboxes, aliases, forwarders, quotas and passwords. Copy existing messages with an approved IMAP or provider migration method, and verify that local delivery and outbound relay settings match the intended design.
- Install HTTPS. Import certificates and private keys only through protected administrative interfaces, install the full chain, and configure automatic renewal for every domain and subdomain.
- Recreate scheduled and background work. Add cron entries under the correct user, preserve the working directory and timezone, and configure queue workers, systemd services or other daemons. Disable jobs that could send duplicate notifications while both servers are active.
- Reapply network and application rules. Copy firewall exceptions, redirects, rewrite rules, rate limits, security headers, API allow-lists and webhook endpoints. Replace old IP addresses wherever they are embedded.
- Preserve DNS data. Recreate records on the authoritative DNS service, but do not point public traffic to the new address until testing and the final synchronization are complete.
How can I test the new server before changing DNS?
Test the destination privately with a staging hostname, temporary URL or a local hosts-file override that maps the production hostname to the new IP. Test both HTTP and HTTPS, because a site can work on one protocol while redirects, certificates or cookies fail on the other.
- Open representative pages and confirm status codes, redirects, canonical URLs, robots rules and static assets.
- Log in, reset a password, submit forms, upload files and exercise every workflow that writes to the database.
- Run representative database queries and check character sets, collation, time zones and stored procedures.
- Test checkout, subscription, webhook and API callbacks in their provider-approved test mode where available.
- Send and receive mail, verify SPF, DKIM and DMARC alignment, and inspect message headers for the intended sending server.
- Check every certificate chain in a browser and with an independent TLS checker; confirm renewal can complete.
- Run cron and queue jobs once in a safe mode, inspect logs and confirm that no duplicate email, billing or webhook action occurs.
- Compare source and destination file counts, database table counts, recent records, permissions, disk usage and application log errors.
Do not treat a successful home-page load as acceptance. A migration is ready for cutover only when the functions that create or change data, the services that send mail and the jobs that run without a browser have all been exercised.

A short write freeze and final synchronization is the practical way to avoid losing new orders, posts, uploads or account changes. Keep the old server serving traffic until the new server is verified.
- Announce a maintenance window and pause publishing, uploads, administrative edits and write-heavy scheduled jobs.
- Record the time of the freeze and take a final database and file synchronization from the shared host to the dedicated server.
- Confirm that the latest records, uploaded files, mail and configuration changes exist on the destination. Resolve any count or timestamp mismatch before proceeding.
- Change the production A and AAAA records to the dedicated server, or change nameservers if the DNS service itself is moving. Make only the planned DNS edits.
- Query several public resolvers and test from more than one network or geographic location. DNS propagation is not simultaneous, so some visitors may continue reaching the old server.
- Watch web, database, mail, firewall and application logs on both machines. Keep the old site read-only or otherwise protected from conflicting writes during the overlap.
- Re-enable publishing, uploads and scheduled jobs on the destination after initial checks pass. For cPanel Live Transfer arrangements that use a proxy, cPanel guidance recommends keeping the source online for two days.
There is no universal downtime figure: the documented full-account procedure warns that websites will likely experience downtime, while careful staging, a short write freeze and DNS preparation can make the visible interruption brief. Do not promise zero downtime when an application cannot be synchronized while it is writing.

How do I roll back if the new host fails?
Rollback is a DNS decision, not a reason to delete the destination. If errors appear, revert the changed A or AAAA records to the old address, keep the dedicated server available for diagnosis and record which requests reached each machine.
Common failure branches
- Pages return 500 errors: compare runtime versions and extensions, inspect application and web-server logs, correct file ownership and permissions, and verify environment variables and database credentials.
- Only some users see the problem: check resolver caches, IPv6 records and split DNS. An incorrect AAAA record can send IPv6 users to a broken server while IPv4 users appear healthy.
- Orders or posts are missing: stop writes, identify the newest record on each database and repeat the final synchronization from the authoritative source. Do not merge databases blindly.
- Mail is delayed or rejected: verify MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, reverse DNS, TLS certificates, firewall rules and relay credentials. Check both inbound and outbound logs.
- Callbacks stop arriving: update third-party allow-lists and webhook URLs, then send a controlled test callback and inspect response codes.
- Scheduled work does not run: confirm the cron user, executable path, working directory, timezone, permissions and service status; review logs for environment differences.
- HTTPS warnings appear: install the correct certificate chain for every hostname, force the intended HTTPS redirect and clear stale configuration from the old virtual host.
After correcting the cause, retest privately, perform another controlled final sync if data changed, and repeat the DNS switch. Leave the old host intact until the second acceptance run succeeds.
When can I shut down the shared account?
Close the old service only after the dedicated server has passed an acceptance checklist and DNS traffic has remained stable through the overlap period.
- Production DNS answers with the dedicated server’s addresses from multiple resolvers and networks.
- HTTPS, redirects, authentication, forms, uploads, checkout and database writes work on the destination.
- Background jobs, API callbacks and monitoring alerts are healthy.
- Inbound and outbound email works, and SPF, DKIM and DMARC checks pass.
- Application, web, database, mail and firewall logs show no unresolved migration errors.
- A final archival backup exists, is stored separately and has a documented restore path.
- Registrar, DNS, certificate-renewal, administrator and backup contacts are updated.
Take one final backup before cancellation. If policy or customer records require retention, preserve the old account or an export for the required period rather than deleting it immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I move website files first and email later?
Yes, but plan the mail transition separately. Recreate mailboxes and authentication before changing MX records, copy existing messages with an IMAP or provider migration process, and keep the old mail service available until queued messages and new delivery have been checked.
Should I change the A record or move the nameservers?
Changing an A or AAAA record keeps DNS management where it is and usually limits the cutover to web traffic. Moving nameservers also transfers responsibility for every DNS record, so it requires a complete zone rebuild and careful verification of mail, verification and third-party service records.

Resolvers and client networks may retain cached answers beyond the nominal TTL, and users may have different IPv4 and IPv6 paths. Monitor both servers during propagation and do not disable the old address until requests, mail and writes are consistently reaching the destination.
Can I migrate a site if I do not have root access to shared hosting?
You can perform a manual per-site migration if you can export files and databases and obtain mailbox data, or ask the dedicated-host provider to perform the move. Without source access to mail, databases or DNS, get those permissions clarified before scheduling the cutover.
