Use Microsoft Edge when you need a free PDF reader for viewing, searching, printing, highlighting, annotating, adding simple text, or completing compatible basic forms. Choose Adobe Acrobat when your regular work includes changing existing PDF text or images, converting files, combining or splitting documents, reorganizing pages, compressing files, password protection, or other advanced document operations. Edge and Acrobat are separate products, so test your important files—especially interactive forms—before deciding whether a subscription is justified.
Edge and Acrobat solve different PDF problems
Microsoft Edge includes a PDF reader in the browser. It is designed to let you open a document without installing a separate PDF application, then navigate, search, print, mark up, and save your work. Microsoft describes the built-in experience as free and separate from Acrobat.

Adobe Acrobat is a dedicated PDF application and service with a broader set of document-production tools. Its Edge extension offers some functions at no charge, while advanced operations require a paid Acrobat subscription. The practical choice is therefore task-based: compare the jobs you perform, not just the names of the products.

Read, find, and navigate
Edge handles the core reading tasks most people expect: page-by-page navigation, zooming, text search, printing, and opening PDFs from local storage or the web. These tools are sufficient for manuals, invoices, reports, forms that use ordinary fields, and documents you only need to consult or distribute.

Highlight, draw, and annotate
The built-in reader supports highlighting, annotation, and inking. You can mark passages, write on a document with a pen or pointer, and add text. Microsoft also says Edge can save a copy with highlights and other markings, allowing you to preserve an annotated version without changing the original file.
Fill straightforward forms
Edge can fill basic PDF forms. That generally means ordinary fields such as text boxes, check boxes, radio buttons, and similar controls that do not depend on unsupported scripting or legacy form technology. Save a completed copy and reopen it to verify that the entries remain visible before sending it.

Microsoft says Edge can translate PDF text and offers more than 70 languages. Language availability and the translation interface can depend on your browser version, device, and market, so treat the language count as a documented capability rather than a guarantee that every language is available in every installation.
Summarize with Copilot when available
Microsoft’s Edge PDF feature information also describes using Copilot to summarize PDFs. Copilot availability is sensitive to browser version, account, market, and device. Do not assume that a particular Edge installation has the summarization control; update Edge and check the PDF toolbar or context menu if the feature is relevant to your workflow.
Where Edge reaches its limits
JavaScript forms
Microsoft’s deployment documentation identifies JavaScript forms as unsupported in Edge’s built-in PDF experience. A form can look normal yet rely on scripts to calculate totals, reveal conditional fields, validate entries, or submit data. If controls do not react, calculated values stay blank, or a submit button does nothing, open the file in a form-capable Acrobat workflow instead of repeatedly editing the Edge copy.

XFA forms
XML Forms Architecture (XFA) is a legacy format used by some specialized government, financial, insurance, and enterprise forms. Microsoft documents XFA as unsupported. An XFA file may display a warning, render incompletely, or show fields that cannot be edited. Ask the issuer for a non-XFA version when possible, or use the application specified by the issuer.

Editing existing page content
Adding a text box or ink mark is not the same as rewriting text that is already part of the page. Edge’s documented reader features cover markup and simple additions; they do not establish a general tool for replacing existing paragraphs, moving an image, or reflowing a page. Those are Acrobat-style editing tasks.
Converting and managing multiple files
Edge can print or save a document, but Microsoft’s feature description does not make it a full conversion, merge, split, or page-management system. If you need to turn a PDF into an editable office format, combine several PDFs, extract selected pages, reorder a long document, or reduce file size, use Acrobat’s advanced tools or another purpose-built utility.
What Acrobat adds
Edit text and images
Microsoft says advanced Acrobat features available through the Edge extension include editing text and images. This is the relevant distinction when you must correct a date inside a paragraph, replace a logo, or adjust page content rather than place an annotation over it.
Convert and create PDFs
Adobe’s extension listing includes PDF conversion and creation among its premium capabilities. Conversion is useful when a recipient needs an editable document or when you need to produce a PDF from another format while retaining a structured workflow. Confirm the formats included by the plan you are considering.

Combine, split, and organize pages
Acrobat’s listed premium tools include combining files, splitting PDFs, and organizing pages. These functions address document assembly: merging a signed cover sheet with an application, extracting pages for a submission, rotating or reordering pages, and maintaining a coherent packet.
Compress and protect documents
Adobe lists compression and password protection as premium tools. Compression can make a file easier to upload, while protection can restrict opening or editing. Security settings can also create compatibility problems for recipients, so tell the recipient the password through a separate channel and verify that the protected file opens in the software they use.
Online e-signing
The extension listing includes online e-signing among its premium capabilities. Basic signing and form filling are listed as free, but more involved signing workflows may depend on the Acrobat plan and account configuration. Check the current plan description before promising a particular signature workflow to a client or colleague.
Choose by the job you need to finish
Choose Edge for everyday reading and markup
- You mostly open, read, search, print, highlight, annotate, or ink PDFs.
- You need to add a small amount of text rather than rewrite existing page content.
- Your forms use ordinary fields and do not require JavaScript or XFA.
- You want a built-in tool with no separate PDF subscription.
- Translation or Copilot summarization is useful and is available in your Edge installation.
Consider Acrobat for recurring document production
- You regularly edit text or images already embedded in PDFs.
- You convert PDFs to or from other file formats.
- You combine, split, reorder, rotate, or otherwise organize pages.
- You need compression, password protection, or a managed online e-signing workflow.
- Important forms fail in Edge because they depend on scripting or XFA.
Use a mixed workflow when that is more economical
There is no requirement to choose one tool for every file. Read and mark up routine documents in Edge, then use Acrobat only for the files that need advanced operations. This approach avoids paying for capabilities you rarely use while preserving a path for complex documents. Keep the original PDF untouched and save an edited or signed copy with a clear filename so you can distinguish source and output versions.
How to work with a PDF in Edge
- Open the file in Edge. Open a PDF link in the browser or choose Edge as the application for a local PDF. If another program captures the file type, right-click the file, choose Open with, and select Microsoft Edge.
- Find the required content. Use the PDF toolbar’s search control to locate a word or phrase. Navigate through the results rather than scrolling through every page.
- Mark the document. Select the highlighting, drawing/inking, annotation, or text controls available in your version. Apply marks to the copy you intend to share.
- Fill compatible fields. Click each field, enter the value, and inspect check boxes and radio buttons. If a field will not accept input or calculated fields do not update, treat that as a compatibility failure rather than a typing problem.
- Translate or summarize if offered. Select PDF text for translation, or use the Copilot PDF command when it appears in your Edge installation. Review generated summaries against the document before relying on them.
- Save a separate copy. Use the save command to preserve highlights, annotations, and text additions. Reopen the saved file and check the pages that matter before submitting it.
How the Acrobat extension fits into Edge
- Install or enable the Acrobat extension. Adobe’s help documentation explains enabling the extension in Edge. Use Edge’s extension management interface and install the official Acrobat extension from the Edge Add-ons catalog.
- Open the PDF and select an Acrobat action. The extension exposes functions such as editing, converting, combining, and organizing. The exact buttons can change as Adobe updates the extension.
- Sign in when prompted. A premium operation may require an Acrobat account and an eligible paid subscription. Do not assume that an account automatically includes every listed feature.
- Complete the operation and download or save the result. For a conversion, merge, split, or edit, inspect the resulting file in Edge or another PDF viewer. Check fonts, page order, images, links, and form fields before distributing it.
- Verify plan terms before purchase. Adobe’s help page was last updated August 23, 2024, while the Edge Add-ons listing showed an update date of September 22, 2026. Those dates describe the documentation and listing, not a guarantee that current pricing or feature boundaries remain unchanged.
Forms: a practical compatibility test
Form compatibility is the clearest reason a seemingly simple Edge workflow can fail. Before completing a time-sensitive form, make a test copy and run this checklist:

- Can every field receive text, selections, or a signature?
- Do check boxes and radio buttons retain their state after saving and reopening?
- Do calculated totals or dates update when an input changes?
- Do conditional sections appear when the form calls for them?
- Does the submit, validate, or print button perform the expected action?
- Does the recipient’s required software or portal accept the saved file?
Failure on a scripted or XFA form is expected under Microsoft’s documented limitations. Try the issuer’s recommended application or request a standard AcroForm or static PDF. Do not flatten a specialized form merely to make it look finished: flattening can remove fields, calculations, validation, and accessibility information.

Microsoft cautions that Edge PDF features can vary by device type, market, and browser version. Its deployment documentation includes a feature and channel version table, so an option visible in one Edge build may be absent in another. Keep Edge current, but still verify the exact controls on the device that will handle the document.
Acrobat’s extension feature set and subscription boundaries can also change. Adobe’s listing describes free and premium capabilities, but geography, account type, and plan can affect access. Current prices and plan inclusions are not established here, so compare the live plan page with the specific tasks you need before entering payment details.

Microsoft’s partnership FAQ, updated August 25, 2026, states: “The built-in Microsoft Edge PDF solution will continue to be free and will remain a separate product from Adobe Acrobat.” That means installing or using Edge does not by itself provide a paid Acrobat entitlement.
A simple decision rule
- List your last five PDF tasks. Separate reading and markup from changes to existing content, conversions, page assembly, protection, and signing.
- Test the hardest file. Open the most complicated form or document in Edge and check fields, calculations, saving, and submission.
- Count recurring advanced tasks. If editing, conversion, combining, organization, compression, or protection happens regularly, estimate the time saved by a dedicated tool.
- Check the current Acrobat plan. Match the plan’s live feature list to your exact jobs and geography; do not rely on an old price or a feature label alone.
- Keep Edge for the rest. Even after adopting Acrobat, Edge remains useful for quick viewing, searching, printing, and basic annotation.
Common mistakes and fixes
Assuming an annotation changes the original text
A white rectangle or text box can visually cover old content without deleting it. If the recipient needs a genuinely edited paragraph, use Acrobat’s editing function and inspect the result.
Submitting a form without reopening it
Some viewers show entries temporarily. Save, close, and reopen the completed copy, then verify key fields and calculated values.
Paying for Acrobat without identifying the needed feature
“Edit PDF” can mean adding a note, changing existing text, converting a file, or reorganizing pages. Identify the operation first, then confirm that the selected plan includes it.
