For most people using a fully updated Windows 10 or Windows 11 home PC, Microsoft Defender is a sensible default and a separate antivirus subscription is optional. Defender is built into Windows, updates through Microsoft, and in AV-TEST’s July–August 2026 Windows 11 consumer test it scored 6/6 for protection, 5.5/6 for performance, and 6/6 for usability. Two paid suites tested at the same time, Bitdefender Total Security 27.0 and Norton 360 26.6/26.7, scored 6/6 in all three categories. That means the practical choice is not “free protection versus no protection”; it is whether another product’s features, controls, support, device coverage, privacy options, or renewal terms justify its cost for you.
Do I need antivirus if I have Windows Defender?
Usually, no additional real-time antivirus is required. Windows Defender Antivirus is built into Windows 10 and Windows 11, and Windows Security provides several related protections. Microsoft says a compatible third-party antivirus that is installed and active causes Defender Antivirus to turn off automatically, and it recommends against running multiple real-time antivirus or antispyware products together because they can create performance, update, or installation problems. See Microsoft’s guidance in its Antivirus and antimalware software FAQ.

A separate suite can still be reasonable when you specifically need capabilities that Defender does not provide in the way you want, such as a particular vendor’s multi-device management, identity or privacy tools, parental controls, support, or a preferred interface. Those are purchasing decisions, not proof that Defender is unsafe.

That warning is about overlapping real-time protection, not about every security application on a PC. If you add a suite, let it register as the active antivirus rather than trying to keep two real-time scanners running. Keep other security habits—such as installing updates and maintaining backups—separate from the choice of antivirus.
What does Microsoft Defender and Windows Security actually protect?
Defender Antivirus is only one part of the Windows Security experience. The exact screens and available controls can vary on organization-managed computers, but a personal Windows installation commonly exposes these layers:
- Virus and threat protection: real-time scanning, manual scans, protection-history review, threat actions, and settings for cloud-delivered protection and automatic sample submission.
- Firewall and network protection: Windows firewall profiles and network status controls.
- App and browser controls: reputation and download protections, including Smart App Control on supported configurations.
- Device security: hardware-backed and isolation-related controls where the PC supports them.
- Ransomware-related controls: Controlled folder access can restrict untrusted applications from changing protected folders. Legitimate software may need to be allowed explicitly.
These controls are separate layers, not a guarantee that every feature is enabled identically on every PC. Windows Security may also show notices when a setting is unavailable because an administrator manages the device. Microsoft describes the available areas and settings in its Virus and threat protection in the Windows Security app guide.
It is useful to distinguish the antivirus engine from the broader dashboard: seeing Windows Security does not, by itself, confirm which antivirus provider is active or whether every optional protection is turned on. Check the status shown in the app instead of treating the presence of a Windows Security icon as a complete audit.
Cloud protection and sample submission
Microsoft recommends cloud-delivered protection and automatic sample submission for optimal protection. Cloud queries can help classify suspicious files more quickly; automatic sample submission sends suspicious files to Microsoft for evaluation. If privacy or regulated-data rules matter to you, read the setting descriptions and your organization’s policy before enabling or changing them. The feature names describe separate controls: review both rather than assuming that enabling one automatically settles the other.
How does Defender compare with paid antivirus in current testing?
The most useful current comparison is an independent test of the exact products and versions, rather than a general claim about “free” or “paid” antivirus. AV-TEST evaluated home-user products on Windows 11 during July and August 2026, using default settings and the most current publicly available versions at the time. Products could update and query cloud services, and the test used realistic scenarios. Scores run from zero to six in protection, performance, and usability.
| Product and version tested | Protection | Performance | Usability | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Windows 11) | 6/6 | 5.5/6 | 6/6 | Near-perfect result in this July–August 2026 test period; performance was half a point below the maximum. |
| Bitdefender Total Security 27.0 | 6/6 | 6/6 | 6/6 | Maximum scores in this test for this product version. |
| Norton 360 26.6 and 26.7 | 6/6 | 6/6 | 6/6 | Maximum scores in this test for the listed product versions. |
See the complete AV-TEST Windows 11 home-user results. These are snapshots, not guarantees. Results depend on the tested release, default settings, Windows build, samples, cloud access, test period, and the lab’s methodology. A score for one version does not establish that every later update, computer, or threat will behave the same way.

For a fair comparison, use the three scores as distinct signals. Protection concerns detection and defense in the test; performance reflects the impact measured in its tested scenarios; usability includes issues such as false alarms. The scores do not say whether a bundled feature is useful to your household, whether a subscription is worth its renewal price, or how the software will behave on your particular PC. In this test, the three products tied for protection and usability, while Bitdefender and Norton received a half-point higher performance score than Defender. That difference is evidence about these test runs—not proof that every user will notice a speed difference.
What does the older Defender result show?
In AV-TEST’s September–October 2025 Defender-specific test, the product detected 100% of widespread and prevalent malware discovered during the previous four weeks. That report also awarded 6/6 for protection, performance, and usability. The 100% figure belongs to that defined sample set and test period; it should not be restated as detection of every type of malware today. The dated report is available from AV-TEST’s Microsoft Defender test page.
When is a third-party antivirus suite worth paying for?
Paying can make sense when a concrete need outweighs the subscription cost and the overhead of another vendor. Evaluate the exact current product, not a brand reputation from several years ago.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You want a particular bundle
Some suites combine antivirus with features such as password or identity monitoring, parental controls, privacy tools, spam protection, backup, or centralized management. Windows already supplies several security layers, so list the features you will actually use and check whether they duplicate Windows controls or require separate accounts and permissions. Do not assume that a feature advertised on a product page is included in every tier; confirm the plan and supported devices before paying.
You manage several devices
A subscription that covers a defined number of Windows PCs and other supported devices may be simpler than configuring each device separately. Compare the device limit, supported operating systems, account requirements, and what happens when the subscription expires. A multi-device license only helps if it covers the devices and platforms in your household; check the terms rather than counting on the product name.
You prefer another vendor’s interface or support
Usability includes alerts, scan controls, explanations, and help when something is blocked. A paid product may be preferable if its workflow is clearer for your household or if you value the vendor’s support channels. That preference does not mean Defender is inadequate for someone else.
You have a specific privacy or policy requirement
Review what telemetry, cloud analysis, sample submission, and account data each product uses. The relevant question is whether the settings and contractual terms fit your requirements, not whether a product is marketed as “premium.” If the PC is managed by an employer or school, follow its administrator’s policy: some Windows Security pages and controls may not be available for you to change.

You have a testable reason to change
A recurring false-positive problem, a compatibility issue, or a measured performance concern can justify trying another product. Recheck current independent results and test the product on your own workload before committing to a long renewal. If you suspect a slowdown, compare the same normal tasks before and after a change, and consider the effect of background scans; do not infer a cause from a single slow boot or scan.
How should I compare the price?
There is no single price that makes a paid suite worthwhile for everyone, and introductory offers can obscure the continuing cost. Compare the first-term price with the renewal price, how many devices are included, whether the plan renews automatically, how cancellation works, and what protections or bundled tools stop working when the subscription ends. Check those details for the precise tier you intend to buy. The built-in Defender component does not require a separate antivirus subscription, so the paid plan needs to justify its added cost with features or support you expect to use.
How can I verify that Defender is protecting my PC?
Use Windows Security rather than assuming that the Windows icon means every control is active.
- Open Start, type Windows Security, and open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection. Under the current provider or protection status area, confirm which antivirus is active.
- Open Manage settings under Virus & threat protection settings. Check that Real-time protection is on if you intend to use Defender.
- Review Cloud-delivered protection and Automatic sample submission. Microsoft recommends both for optimal protection; read the privacy information before accepting the file-submission behavior.
- Open Protection history to inspect recent detections, quarantine actions, and items that require a decision.
- Run a scan when needed. For a file or folder, Microsoft’s instructions are in Scan an item with Windows Security.
Also check Firewall & network protection, App & browser control, and Device security. Controlled folder access is under the ransomware-protection area when supported; it can block untrusted applications from writing to protected folders, so allow a trusted application only when you understand why it was blocked. If an application you trust stops saving to a protected folder, check the block notice and configure access deliberately rather than disabling the protection without checking.

Do not install a second real-time scanner and leave both active. Microsoft says Defender should turn back on after a compatible third-party product is uninstalled, but you should verify the result instead of relying on an assumption.
- Choose the replacement product and download it from the vendor’s official website or an authorized channel.
- Read the current vendor’s removal instructions. Use its own uninstaller or cleanup utility when instructed; incomplete removal can leave services, drivers, or settings behind.
- Restart if the uninstaller requests it.
- Install the replacement and allow it to update before judging its protection status.
- Open Windows Security and confirm that the intended provider is active and that real-time protection is not unexpectedly disabled.
- Check firewall, browser, ransomware, and privacy settings again. A new suite may change defaults or add prompts that need a decision.
If the replacement fails to register, shows conflicting providers, or leaves Defender inactive, stop downloading unrelated security tools. Reboot, use the vendor’s documented cleanup process, and recheck Windows Security. Microsoft’s FAQ explains the expected Defender behavior when another compatible antivirus is installed or removed. Once the change is complete, verify that one intended real-time antivirus is active, rather than assuming that installation alone settled the handoff.
What are the main trade-offs between Defender and a third-party suite?
| Decision factor | Microsoft Defender | Third-party antivirus |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Built into Windows 10 and Windows 11. | Requires a separate installation; licensing varies by product. |
| Protection evidence | 6/6 protection in AV-TEST’s July–August 2026 Windows 11 test. | The two examples in that same test also scored 6/6 protection. |
| Performance evidence | 5.5/6 in that test. | Bitdefender Total Security 27.0 and Norton 360 26.6/26.7 scored 6/6. |
| Windows integration | Uses Windows Security and Microsoft’s built-in controls. | Adds another vendor’s interface, services, notifications, and update system. |
| Extra features | Firewall, app/browser controls, device-security areas, and optional settings such as Controlled folder access are available through Windows Security. | May bundle additional privacy, identity, parental, backup, or support features; verify the exact plan. |
| Cost and renewal | No separate antivirus subscription is required for the built-in component. | Compare the introductory price, recurring renewal price, device count, cancellation rules, and what remains usable after expiry. |
| Privacy controls | Review cloud-delivered protection and automatic sample submission settings. | Review the provider’s cloud analysis, telemetry, account, and sample-submission policies separately. |
The table separates test scores from feature descriptions. A vendor’s feature list is not an independent measurement, and a lab score does not tell you whether you will use a bundled feature or accept its privacy terms. For the purchase decision, compare like with like: the current edition, the same supported platform, the number of devices you need, and the full renewal terms—not only a short-term headline price.

Is Microsoft Defender enough for Windows 11 in everyday use?
For a home user who installs Windows updates, keeps browsers and applications current, leaves real-time protection enabled, and treats unexpected links and attachments cautiously, Defender is a reasonable baseline. The 2026 AV-TEST result shows that it can reach the same maximum protection and usability scores as the named paid products in that test, although its performance score was 5.5 rather than 6.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match“Enough” does not mean invulnerable. Antivirus can miss new or disguised threats, and a user can still approve a malicious download, disclose a password, or lose data to hardware failure or ransomware. Use separate backups, updates, strong account protection, and careful download habits; do not expect an antivirus label to replace them.
Should I pay for third-party antivirus?
Pay only for a defined benefit: a feature you need, easier management across devices, a support model you value, or a measured compatibility problem with Defender. Before subscribing, compare the exact product’s current independent-test results, resource impact, false-positive behavior, covered devices, privacy controls, first-year and renewal pricing, and cancellation terms.
If none of those factors solves a real problem, staying with Defender avoids an extra subscription and a second security-management layer. If one does, install only one real-time antivirus and verify the active provider after the change.
A practical decision checklist
- Keep Defender if you have a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, do not need a specialized bundle, and Windows Security shows active real-time protection.
- Compare a paid suite if you need multi-device administration, a specific privacy or identity feature, parental controls, or vendor support that Windows does not provide in the form you want.
- Check evidence for the exact current version and platform. Treat a dated lab score as evidence for that test, not a permanent guarantee.
- Compare the full cost of the plan, including renewal, device limits, cancellation, and what happens after expiry; do not decide from an introductory offer alone.
- Avoid stacking two real-time antivirus products. Remove the old product using its instructions, restart if required, and confirm the new provider in Windows Security.
- Review settings after major Windows or antivirus updates, because defaults and available controls can change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Windows Defender and another antivirus run together?
A compatible third-party antivirus normally registers as the active provider and causes Defender Antivirus real-time protection to turn off. Microsoft advises against running multiple real-time antivirus or antispyware products simultaneously because of possible performance, update, and installation conflicts.
Does Microsoft Defender slow down a Windows PC?
AV-TEST gave Defender 5.5/6 for performance in its July–August 2026 Windows 11 home-user test. That is a strong result, but the effect on an individual PC depends on hardware, workload, scan timing, and the applications installed.
What happens to Defender after I uninstall paid antivirus software?
Microsoft says Defender should turn back on after a compatible third-party antivirus is uninstalled. Open Windows Security afterward and confirm the active provider and real-time protection status; if they are not correct, follow the former vendor’s cleanup instructions and restart.
Best Value
Is Windows Security the same thing as Microsoft Defender Antivirus?
No. Defender Antivirus is the malware-scanning component, while Windows Security is the Windows interface that also exposes firewall, app and browser controls, device-security settings, and other protections. Which pages and features appear can differ on organization-managed PCs.
Is Microsoft Defender enough for Windows 11?
For many home users with an up-to-date PC and real-time protection active, it is a reasonable baseline. AV-TEST’s July–August 2026 Windows 11 test scored Defender 6/6 for protection and usability and 5.5/6 for performance. A lab score is a snapshot, not a guarantee against every threat.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I pay for third-party antivirus?
Consider paying when a specific feature, multi-device management, support option, or compatibility need is worth the full cost. Compare the exact plan’s current test results, covered devices, privacy settings, renewal price, and cancellation terms; if you do not need an added benefit, a separate subscription may not be necessary.
What does automatic sample submission do?
It sends suspicious files to Microsoft for evaluation. Microsoft recommends the setting for optimal protection, but you can read its description and consider privacy or organizational rules before changing it.
Does Windows Defender include firewall protection?
Windows Security includes a separate Firewall & network protection area alongside Defender Antivirus. Check the firewall and other protection areas in Windows Security rather than assuming that every control is enabled identically on every PC.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: If your Windows 10 or Windows 11 home PC is up to date and Windows Security confirms that real-time protection is active, Microsoft Defender is a reasonable default for most people. Pay for a third-party suite when its specific features, support, or device management justify the full subscription cost—not simply because it is paid. Do not run two real-time antivirus products together, and verify the active provider after switching.
