The free Next-Gen update for METRO 2033 Redux and METRO Last Light Redux adds modern rendering and display support for current PCs, but it may be too demanding for systems built around the original Redux requirements. Existing PC owners receive the update through Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG, while a separate legacy branch—metro_2033_redux_legacy or metro_last_light_redux_legacy—provides a route back when the new version will not run acceptably. The update is a quality-of-life upgrade, not a remake or remaster, and it does not add ray tracing.
What does the Metro Redux update add?
The update targets modern graphics cards, high-resolution displays and newer Windows systems. It removes the old frame-rate cap, although actual performance remains dependent on the computer, and adds several reconstruction, lighting and asset improvements.

- 4A TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing for supported GPUs.
- NVIDIA DLSS support on compatible NVIDIA hardware.
- AMD FSR support on compatible AMD hardware.
- Screen-space global illumination.
- Higher geometry and texture detail, including 4K textures.
- Improved physically based materials, animation, sound and spatial audio.
- Better handling of 1440p, 4K, ultrawide and high-refresh-rate displays.
Fixes address stretched or incorrect fullscreen images, missing modern resolutions, pixelated bloom, flickering or broken shadows, missing volumetric lighting, unstable screen-space ambient occlusion, shimmering textures and ultrawide post-processing errors. The publisher also lists stability fixes for Windows 11, newer AMD hardware, high-refresh-rate monitors, chapter transitions and loading.
Is this a remake, remaster or ray-traced version?
No. PLAION describes the release as a quality-of-life upgrade that preserves the existing Redux gameplay and visual identity. Ray tracing is not included; the publisher says adding it would require a deeper rendering rework rather than a smaller compatibility update.

Can an older PC run Metro Redux after the update?
The published hardware figures are the legacy requirements for the earlier Redux branch, not a measured guarantee for the enhanced branch. The new branch is aimed at modern hardware, and no new minimum CPU or GPU specification has been published.
| Game | Minimum legacy requirement | Recommended legacy requirement | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| METRO 2033 Redux | 64-bit Windows Vista, 7 or 8; 2.2 GHz dual-core CPU; 2 GB RAM; DirectX 10 Shader Model 4 GPU such as GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB | Quad-core or 3.0 GHz dual-core CPU; 4 GB RAM; DirectX 11 GPU such as GeForce GTX 480 or better | 10 GB |
| METRO Last Light Redux | 64-bit Windows Vista, 7 or 8; 2.2 GHz dual-core CPU; 2 GB RAM; DirectX 10 Shader Model 4 GPU such as GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB | Quad-core or 3.0 GHz dual-core CPU; 4 GB RAM; DirectX 11 GPU such as GeForce GTX 480 or better | 10 GB |
Those figures describe the older baseline. They should not be treated as evidence that the enhanced branch will deliver a particular frame rate, and the publisher has not supplied a new performance target. If the updated build fails to launch, stutters badly or exposes graphics errors on an older system, use the legacy branch instead of assuming a driver tweak will solve the problem.
How do I switch back to the legacy branch?
Steam and GOG update notes identify a legacy branch for each game. The exact menu differs by storefront, so read the platform’s current branch instructions before changing versions.
- Back up local save files and note which game executable and storefront you use.
- Open the game’s properties or beta/branch selection screen in the storefront.
- Choose
metro_2033_redux_legacyfor METRO 2033 Redux ormetro_last_light_redux_legacyfor METRO Last Light Redux, when that branch is exposed. - Allow the storefront to download the selected build, then launch it and verify your saves.
- If the branch is not listed, consult that platform’s official update instructions rather than downloading an unofficial executable.
A rollback restores the older feature set: it will not provide TSR, DLSS, FSR, the new lighting work, 4K texture support or the same modern-display fixes. Its purpose is compatibility with lower-spec hardware.

When did the update arrive, and which platforms receive it?
The PC build released through Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG on October 22. The FAQ schedules versions for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5/5 Pro for October 29. Availability is worldwide, subject to platform and version compatibility.
On PC, the upgrade is automatic for most existing owners. On PlayStation and Xbox, it appears as a separate library item. Some editions may be incompatible, so ownership alone is not an absolute guarantee.

Do saves carry over after upgrading?
Save behavior depends on the platform. PLAION says the Windows Store upgrade does not carry saves forward and recommends starting a new game; chapter select is unlocked in that situation. Back up PC saves before changing branches, because switching builds can affect which files the game recognizes. The Deep Silver Account reward is unavailable on GOG.
What should returning players expect from the games?
METRO 2033 Redux is the rebuilt first chapter of Artyom’s story. The 2010 original was rebuilt in 2014 with the METRO Last Light engine and gameplay framework, and this update keeps that Redux foundation. Players can choose Spartan or Survival styles, while Ranger Mode removes the HUD, makes combat deadlier and limits resources.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the update increase my frame rate?
It removes the old cap and adds modern upscalers, but no guaranteed uplift is published. Results depend on the GPU, CPU, resolution, selected upscaler and settings.
Can I use DLSS on an AMD graphics card?
No. DLSS is the NVIDIA-specific option listed for compatible NVIDIA GPUs. AMD hardware can use FSR where supported, while TSR is the vendor-neutral option described for supported GPUs.

What if my storefront does not show the legacy branch?
Do not install files from an unofficial source. Check the storefront’s current update or branch instructions and confirm that you own the correct Redux edition; branch availability can vary by platform and version.
Is 4K texture support the same as native 4K rendering?
No. 4K textures describe asset resolution. Output resolution is a separate display setting, and the update’s 1440p and 4K fixes do not guarantee native-4K performance on every computer.
