Meta and Alphabet are both building enormous AI capacity, but they expect that investment to pay back in different ways. Meta’s established engine is advertising across its apps, so AI is designed to increase recommendations, engagement, ad delivery and measurement, while new products such as generative AI and wearables create additional possibilities. Alphabet also uses AI to improve advertising and consumer products, but it has a second direct route to revenue through Google Cloud’s infrastructure, platform and enterprise AI services.

The spending figures require care. Meta reported $72.22 billion of 2025 capital expenditures, including principal payments on finance leases, and guided to $135–145 billion for 2026. Alphabet reported $91.4 billion of 2025 capital expenditures and said 2026 technical-infrastructure investment would rise significantly, without providing a comparable current-year figure in the cited filing. Those are not like-for-like numbers, so the useful comparison is business model, infrastructure scope, monetization evidence and cost exposure—not simply which company has the larger headline total.

What is the short answer on Meta versus Alphabet’s AI strategy?

Meta is primarily using AI to make an enormous advertising network more valuable, while Alphabet is combining the same internal-product strategy with a sizable business that sells computing and AI services to other organizations. Meta’s route can produce returns by improving economics that already exist inside the Family of Apps. Alphabet has that advertising route plus Google Cloud revenue, subscriptions, platforms and devices.

Question Meta Alphabet
Primary established revenue engine Advertising across the Family of Apps; the company says substantially all revenue comes from advertising placements Google Services advertising, subscriptions, platforms and devices, plus Google Cloud and Other Bets
2025 capital expenditures $72.22 billion, including principal payments on finance leases $91.4 billion, described primarily as technical-infrastructure investment
2026 spending information in the cited filings $135–145 billion capital-expenditure guidance issued October 21, 2026 Management expects a significant increase in technical-infrastructure investment; a comparable 2026 amount is not stated
Direct AI-services route Not the core reported model; investment is aimed mainly at improving consumer products, advertising and new devices Google Cloud infrastructure, platform and enterprise AI services, plus Workspace features with Gemini
AI revenue evidence Management attributed incremental advertising revenue to stronger engagement, recommendations and more efficient monetization Cloud growth and AI-enabled offerings are reported, but the cited filing does not isolate an AI-only revenue figure

That distinction matters. A company can spend heavily on AI without selling an AI product as a separate line item. It can also report growth in a segment that contains AI features without proving that AI alone caused the growth.

How do Meta and Alphabet make money today?

Meta’s advertising-centered model

Meta reports its Family of Apps as the economic center of the company. Substantially all of its revenue comes from advertising placements on services such as Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp. The company’s AI investment therefore has a relatively direct connection to existing revenue: better systems can determine which content people see, how long they remain engaged, which ads are delivered, and how advertisers measure results.

Meta reported an average of 3.64 billion Family daily active people in September 2026. That figure demonstrates the scale at which recommendation and advertising systems operate, but it is not an AI-user count, an AI-revenue figure or a measure of profitability by itself.

The company also identifies generative AI features, new models, wearables and other products as investment areas. Meta’s annual filing names AI glasses among its products, but the cited material does not establish a particular model’s current availability, price or sales contribution. Reality Labs sells consumer hardware, software and content; Meta reports that these long-term efforts have produced limited revenue relative to their costs.

Alphabet’s broader mix

Alphabet’s 2025 reporting separates several businesses. Google Services produced $342.7 billion of revenue and $139.4 billion of operating income. That segment includes Search and other advertising, YouTube advertising, subscriptions, platforms and devices. AI can therefore improve advertising and consumer products without appearing as a separate AI segment.

Google Cloud generated $58.7 billion of revenue and $13.9 billion of operating income in 2025. Cloud sells consumption-based infrastructure and platform services, enterprise AI offerings and Workspace subscriptions that include Gemini features. Other Bets contributed $1.5 billion of revenue. Alphabet’s mix gives it a direct customer-billing route for AI infrastructure that Meta’s reported business structure does not emphasize.

How much are Meta and Alphabet investing in AI infrastructure?

The cleanest comparison starts with the same year and the same accounting definition. The available figures include one 2026 forecast, one 2026 qualitative outlook and two 2025 actuals, so they should not be ranked as though they were equivalent.

Company and period Reported amount What the figure means Comparison warning
Meta, 2025 actual $72.22 billion Capital expenditures, including principal payments on finance leases Lease treatment affects comparison with another company’s capex presentation
Meta, 2026 guidance $135–145 billion Anticipated capital expenditures, issued with the October 21, 2026 third-quarter results Forecast, not final spending; includes principal payments on finance leases
Alphabet, 2025 actual $91.4 billion Capital expenditures described primarily as technical-infrastructure investment Comparable as a 2025 actual only after checking definitions against Meta’s figure
Alphabet, 2026 outlook in the cited filing Significant increase expected Qualitative expectation for technical-infrastructure investment No current comparable dollar guidance is stated in the cited material

Meta’s 2026 guidance is not evidence that it will spend exactly that amount, and Alphabet’s statement that investment will increase does not supply a number. A headline comparison saying one company “spends more on AI” would mix periods, forecasts and definitions.

Why Meta’s 2026 number is especially difficult to compare

Meta’s guidance includes principal payments on finance leases. That inclusion can increase the reported capital-expenditure figure relative to a presentation that records leased capacity differently. The right question is not merely how many dollars appear in a release, but which equipment, facilities and lease obligations those dollars represent.

What the 2025 figures do—and do not—show

Both companies reported very large 2025 infrastructure investments. Meta’s $72.22 billion and Alphabet’s $91.4 billion establish the scale of their spending, but neither number is an AI-only total. Servers and data centers can support advertising, search, cloud workloads, storage, networking and other products at the same time.

What does the infrastructure actually pay for?

Alphabet’s technical infrastructure

Alphabet identifies servers, network equipment, data-center land and building construction as technical-infrastructure investment categories. Its filing says AI development and serving require more compute than historical consumer and enterprise offerings. As workloads expand, Alphabet expects higher depreciation, energy, equipment and network-capacity costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That cost profile continues after a facility is built. A purchased server becomes a depreciating asset; a data center requires power and networking; and a larger model can demand additional capacity when users query it. The commercial opportunity is correspondingly broader than advertising, but the operating burden is broader too.

Meta’s infrastructure expansion and commitments

Meta’s June 2026 filing describes significantly increased investment in third-party cloud capacity as well as servers, data centers and network infrastructure. As of June 30, 2026, it reported $349.31 billion in non-cancelable contractual commitments, mostly related to cloud capacity and other technical-infrastructure investments.

That $349.31 billion is a contractual-commitment figure, not one year of capital expenditures. It represents obligations that can extend across future periods and should not be added to Meta’s 2025 capex or treated as cash already spent. It does, however, show that capacity planning can lock in substantial future costs even before all infrastructure becomes operational.

How can Meta turn AI investment into revenue?

Recommendations and engagement

Meta’s systems rank content and recommendations across its apps. If AI helps people find posts, videos or accounts they value, the company can potentially increase engagement and create more opportunities for advertising. This is an indirect monetization route: the AI feature may be free, while the economic benefit appears through usage and ad performance.

Ad delivery, targeting and measurement

Meta identifies ad delivery and measurement as AI uses. Better prediction can help select an ad, place it in a suitable context and give advertisers more useful feedback about results. The company also describes AI-assisted product development and generative AI features, which may improve the tools surrounding its advertising business even when no separate AI fee is charged.

New products and wearables

Generative AI, models and wearables give Meta additional product paths. AI glasses can put an assistant or computer-vision capability into a consumer device, but the cited filing does not provide a product-level revenue forecast or cost breakdown. It would be inaccurate to treat the existence of the product category as proof that it is already a material profit center.

What Meta says is happening now

In its October 21, 2026 third-quarter results release, Meta management attributed incremental advertising revenue to stronger engagement, better recommendations and more efficient monetization. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, “Our investments are paying off, the core business is strong, and we’re seeing velocity across the board.” That is management’s assessment, not an independently measured attribution of every dollar of revenue to AI.

How can Alphabet turn AI investment into revenue?

Advertising and consumer services

Alphabet can use AI inside Search, YouTube and other Google Services to improve consumer experiences and advertising systems. Revenue from those products remains reported within broader categories such as advertising, subscriptions, platforms and devices, so an AI improvement may raise the value of an existing service without generating a separately labeled AI sale.

Google Cloud infrastructure and enterprise AI

Google Cloud provides Alphabet’s clearest direct monetization route. Customers can pay for infrastructure and platform consumption, enterprise AI services and related tools. Workspace subscriptions with Gemini features add a recurring software component. The 2025 Cloud figures—$58.7 billion in revenue and $13.9 billion in operating income—show a commercial business with measurable profitability, but they do not establish how much of that result was caused by AI.

Subscriptions, platforms and devices

Alphabet also reports subscriptions, platforms and devices within Google Services. AI features can support retention or differentiation in those offerings, but the cited annual filing does not isolate an AI-only revenue or margin line. Any claim that all growth in these categories came from AI would exceed the disclosed evidence.

Which company has the clearer AI payback model?

Neither company has a universally superior model; the answer depends on what “payback” means. Meta can monetize AI by improving a mature advertising machine at massive consumer scale. Alphabet can improve its own products and sell capacity or software directly to paying organizations.

Payback question Meta’s position Alphabet’s position
Can AI improve an existing high-volume business? Yes. Recommendations, engagement, ad delivery and measurement all connect to the Family of Apps. Yes. AI can affect Search, YouTube, advertising and other Google Services.
Can the company charge customers directly for infrastructure? That is not the principal reported route; Meta’s disclosed third-party capacity is primarily an input to its own products. Yes. Google Cloud sells infrastructure, platform services and enterprise AI offerings.
Is AI-only revenue disclosed? Not as a separate company-wide line in the cited material. Not in the cited passages; Cloud and Services figures combine AI and non-AI activity.
What is the main uncertainty? Whether escalating capacity and product investments generate enough incremental advertising and new-product economics. Whether direct Cloud demand and internal-product gains justify rising infrastructure, depreciation, energy and networking costs.

Meta’s model can look efficient when a recommendation improvement lifts advertising returns on an existing audience. Alphabet’s model can offer more diversification because enterprise customers pay for cloud services, but those services also require delivering reliable capacity at a cost that preserves margins.

How should you compare the companies’ AI spending?

Use a disciplined comparison rather than a single spending ranking.

  1. Match the period. Compare Meta’s 2025 actual with Alphabet’s 2025 actual, then compare 2026 guidance with 2026 guidance once Alphabet provides a current dollar outlook.
  2. Match the accounting definition. Check whether finance-lease principal payments are included, and identify whether the figure covers only owned equipment or also other capacity arrangements.
  3. Separate spending from commitments. Meta’s $349.31 billion of non-cancelable commitments is not an annual capex total. Keep multi-year contractual obligations distinct from cash capital expenditures in the comparison.
  4. Map infrastructure to the business model. Ask whether servers and data centers support advertising, consumer products, Cloud customers or several of them at once.
  5. Track operating consequences. Watch depreciation, energy, equipment and network costs, utilization and segment profitability rather than assuming every dollar of capacity immediately produces revenue.
  6. Separate management claims from reported outcomes. Meta’s statement about incremental ad revenue is management’s attribution. Alphabet’s Cloud growth is a reported segment result, not an AI-only result.

What are the main risks in this AI investment race?

Capacity can arrive before demand

Large commitments and long construction timelines can leave a company paying for capacity before new products or customer workloads reach expected scale. Underutilized infrastructure still creates depreciation, energy and maintenance costs.

AI workloads are more expensive to serve

Alphabet explicitly warns that AI development and serving require more compute than earlier offerings. More powerful systems can therefore increase the cost of each interaction, even when they improve product quality or create a new revenue opportunity.

Business benefits may be hard to isolate

When AI improves recommendations, search or ad measurement, the financial effect is blended into a larger product. That makes it difficult for outside readers to determine whether returns came from AI, broader product changes, pricing, audience growth or other factors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Long-term obligations reduce flexibility

Meta’s non-cancelable commitments show how infrastructure decisions can extend across years. If priorities change, a company may still owe money for capacity planned under an earlier model or product strategy.

What information is still needed for a fully current 2026 comparison?

The cited Alphabet filing does not provide a dollar figure for its latest 2026 technical-infrastructure spending outlook. A complete like-for-like update would need Alphabet’s current quarterly guidance and a matching explanation of what it includes. It would also help to see whether either company begins reporting more specific AI-related revenue, capacity utilization or product-level profitability.

Until those disclosures arrive, the most defensible conclusion is qualitative: Meta is scaling AI to reinforce an advertising-led ecosystem and develop consumer products, while Alphabet is scaling AI across its own services and a direct enterprise-cloud business. Their infrastructure needs overlap, but their paths from compute to cash are not the same.

What does this mean for readers comparing the two companies?

Meta offers the more concentrated AI thesis: improvements in recommendations, engagement and advertising must carry much of the economic case, with wearables and generative products providing additional options. Alphabet offers a more diversified thesis: AI can strengthen advertising and consumer services while Google Cloud sells infrastructure and enterprise tools directly.

Spending alone does not decide the contest. The decisive evidence will be whether each company converts capacity into durable usage, profitable revenue and manageable operating costs, reported on comparable periods and definitions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Meta’s 3.64 billion Family daily active people figure an AI usage metric?

No. It is a scale measure for people active across Meta’s family of apps in September 2026, not a count of people using an AI assistant or a disclosure of AI-generated revenue. It helps explain the potential reach of Meta’s recommendation and advertising systems, but it cannot by itself show an AI return on investment.

Are Meta’s AI glasses reported as a separate revenue business?

The cited annual filing identifies AI glasses as a product area but does not provide a separate revenue, price, availability or profitability figure for them. Treat the category as a product-development path rather than a disclosed standalone financial segment.

What is the difference between a capital-expenditure figure and a contractual commitment?

Capital expenditures describe spending recognized for acquiring or building assets during a reporting period. A non-cancelable contractual commitment is an obligation for future purchases or capacity and can extend over several years, so it should not be counted as money already spent in the current year.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do Meta or Alphabet publish an AI profit margin?

The cited disclosures do not provide a company-wide AI profit margin. Meta reports an advertising-led Family of Apps business, while Alphabet reports broader segments such as Google Services and Google Cloud that combine AI and non-AI activities.
