Yes. Meta Quest 3S and Meta Quest 3 can be used without a gaming PC. They are all-in-one headsets: the processor, battery, storage and operating system needed for compatible native Quest games and apps are inside the headset. You can buy one, complete its setup and use standalone software without owning another computer.
A gaming PC matters only for a different use case: running PC VR software or streaming a computer’s game library to the headset. Meta Quest Link and Steam Link provide those computer-connected modes. A Link cable is therefore optional, not a requirement for ordinary Quest use.

Is Meta Quest standalone?
Yes. Meta classifies Quest 3 and Quest 3S as all-in-one headsets, and the Quest 3S product description identifies its built-in processor, battery, storage and operating system as the components that make standalone use possible. The headset performs the computing for compatible native experiences instead of sending every frame to a separate computer.
That design changes the buying decision. You are not purchasing a display and motion-tracking device that is unusable until it is connected to a powerful desktop. You are purchasing a self-contained VR system that can also act as a headset for a computer later. The computer connection is an additional mode, not the basic operating model.

What can you do with a Quest headset and no gaming PC?
You can run compatible native Quest games and applications directly on the headset. The headset’s own hardware handles the software in this mode, so a gaming desktop is not part of the minimum setup.
Native games and apps
Native Quest software is built for the headset platform. After the headset’s initial setup, you select and launch those experiences from the Quest software environment rather than from a Windows VR program. The important qualification is compatible: a title made only for PC VR is not transformed into a native Quest application simply because you own a Quest headset.

Standalone system functions
Because the operating system and storage are inside the headset, the Quest can manage its installed software without a permanently attached computer. Battery-powered operation is part of the same all-in-one design. You still need to follow the current setup and account instructions shown by Meta, and individual apps can impose their own requirements, but none of that changes the central fact that the headset itself supplies the computing platform.
What standalone use does not promise
Standalone mode does not provide automatic access to every VR title released for computers. PC-only software, computer-rendered experiences and games in a desktop library belong to the PC VR category. If that library is your main reason for buying a headset, plan for a computer connection rather than assuming the native catalog covers it.
When is a gaming PC useful or necessary?
A gaming PC becomes necessary when the software you want is designed to run on the computer, or when you want the computer to render a game and send the result to the headset. The Quest remains the viewing and tracking device in that arrangement, while the computer supplies the PC VR software and processing.
| Use case | Gaming PC needed? | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Native Quest games and apps | No | The headset supplies the processing for compatible standalone software. |
| PC VR through Meta Quest Link | Yes | A supported Quest headset connects to a computer, which runs the PC VR software and rendering. |
| Steam Link streaming | Yes | Steam Link streams games from the user’s computer to a compatible Quest headset over a suitable wireless network. |
| Buying a Quest 3S as a first VR headset | No | Its all-in-one design supports a PC-free starting setup. |
Meta Quest Link
Meta Quest Link is the computer-connected route documented for supported Quest devices. In Link mode, the computer runs the PC VR title and the Quest presents the experience through a wired or supported wireless connection. Meta documentation identifies Link as a method for Quest 3, Quest 3S, Quest 2 and Quest Pro.

This is why a Link cable should be treated as an optional PC-VR accessory. It is useful if you later decide to connect a supported headset to a computer, but it is not part of the minimum equipment for native Quest play.
Steam Link
Steam Link is another computer-dependent option. Steam’s support documentation describes it as streaming games from the user’s computer directly to compatible Meta Quest headsets. The computer still has to run the game; the headset is receiving the stream rather than replacing the computer.
Steam also specifies a compatible wireless-network setup for this route. The exact network and software requirements can change, so check the current Steam and Meta compatibility instructions when you configure it. A Quest headset on its own cannot stream a game from a computer that is not available to run and share that game.
What do you need to use a Meta Quest 3S without a computer?
The PC-free equipment list is short:
- A standalone Meta Quest headset, such as Quest 3S or Quest 3.
- The headset’s included charging equipment and enough charge to complete setup and play.
- Access to the current Meta setup process and the native Quest software you want to install.
You do not need to add a gaming PC, a Quest Link cable or a Steam Link setup merely to start using the headset in standalone mode. Those items become relevant only if you choose PC VR later.

How do you start a Quest in standalone mode?
The evidence available for this question establishes the operating model, not a permanent, version-specific setup script. Meta can change account screens, phone prompts, software labels and network guidance. Use this high-level path, then follow the exact instructions displayed by the current headset software.

- Complete Meta’s current first-run setup. Follow the on-screen prompts for the headset, account and software configuration shown for your model. The precise prompts are version-dependent.
- Open the native Quest software area. Choose applications that list compatibility with your Quest model. These are the experiences intended to run on the headset itself.
- Install and launch a native title. Let the headset complete its normal installation process, then start the application from the headset interface.
- Use computer-connected features only if you need them. If a title requires PC VR, stop and check its requirements before purchasing accessories. At that point, choose the supported Link or Steam Link path and follow the current vendor instructions.
This sequence deliberately avoids promising a fixed account or network checklist. Those details are software-version and service dependent; the reliable purchasing conclusion is that a gaming PC is not a prerequisite for the standalone path.
What is the difference between standalone Quest and PC VR?
Standalone Quest and PC VR use the same headset in two different computing arrangements. The distinction affects what software you can access, what hardware you must own and how complicated the setup becomes.

| Extra accessory | No Link cable needed | A supported Link connection or wireless streaming setup is needed |
| Software access | Native Quest catalog | PC VR software and a computer’s streamed game library |
| Setup complexity | Headset-first setup | Additional computer, connection and compatibility steps |
| Up-front hardware decision | Buy the headset as the complete starting system | Include the cost and capability of a suitable gaming computer if you do not already own one |
Choose standalone first when
- You want to play native Quest games and use compatible apps without maintaining another gaming system.
- You are buying your first VR headset and prefer the simplest hardware arrangement.
- You do not already own a computer capable of running PC VR software.
- You value portability and a self-contained setup more than access to a computer’s VR catalog.
Plan for PC VR when
- A specific title you want is identified as PC VR rather than a native Quest release.
- Your existing game library is on a computer and streaming or Link access is the reason you want a headset.
- You are deliberately choosing computer-rendered VR experiences and accept the extra connection steps.
Owning a Quest does not force you to choose permanently. You can begin with native software and add PC VR later if your computer, network and chosen titles meet the current compatibility requirements.
Do you need to buy a Quest Link cable?
No. A Quest Link cable is unnecessary for standalone play. It becomes relevant only when you decide to connect a supported Quest headset to a computer for PC VR.
Meta’s documentation lists Link for Quest 3, Quest 3S, Quest 2 and Quest Pro. That makes the cable a mode-specific accessory, not a universal starter item. Buying one before you know that you want PC VR adds equipment without expanding what the headset can do natively.
If you later choose Link, check the current compatibility guidance for the headset, computer and cable before purchase. Product support can change with software updates, and the correct cable or wireless method depends on the connection route you select.

Can Steam Link replace a gaming PC?
No. Steam Link changes how the game reaches the headset, not where the game runs. Steam’s documentation says the application streams games from the user’s computer to a compatible Quest headset, so a computer that can run and share the game remains part of the setup.
Steam Link can be attractive when you already own a suitable gaming computer and want a wireless path to the headset. It is not a way to turn a Quest into a computer-free Steam VR system. You also need the compatible wireless-network conditions specified by Steam, and those should be checked against the current support page before configuration.
What should you do if a game appears to require a PC?
First identify whether the requirement belongs to the game or to an optional mode. A native Quest version can run on the headset, while a separate PC VR edition may require Link or Steam Link. The two editions can share a name without sharing the same hardware requirements.
- The store listing says Quest-compatible: install the native version and use the headset’s standalone environment.
- The listing says PC VR, Rift or computer streaming: expect to need a gaming PC and a supported connection method.
- The listing is unclear: check the current Meta or Steam product documentation before buying. Do not infer compatibility from the headset’s ability to run other games.
If a setup screen asks for a computer, that usually indicates you entered a PC VR workflow rather than proving that the headset cannot operate alone. Exit that workflow and select the native Quest software path when the title offers one.

Is Quest 3S a sensible first headset without a PC?
Yes, if your priority is native Quest software. Its standalone description directly matches a PC-free purchase: the headset includes the processing platform, battery, storage and operating system needed for compatible experiences. You can defer the expense and complexity of a gaming PC until you know that PC VR is important to you.
If your main goal is a particular computer-only game, the answer changes. In that case, evaluate the computer and connection requirements first, because the headset alone will not supply the PC software or rendering that title needs.

What about Quest 2?
The same principle applies to Quest 2 documentation, which describes advanced all-in-one VR and labels the computer connection as optional for PC titles. Quest 2 therefore illustrates the broader product model: native use is standalone, while access to Rift or other PC VR software is an additional connection mode.
For a current purchase, compare the model and software support shown by Meta at the time you buy. The core answer does not depend on choosing Quest 2, Quest 3 or Quest 3S: a supported Quest headset can run compatible native software without a gaming PC.
How we picked the practical recommendation
The recommendation follows five questions established by the product descriptions and support documentation:
- Can the headset run native apps without another computer?
- Does the reader specifically want PC VR or Steam game streaming?
- Would a computer be an additional up-front hardware expense?
- Is a headset-only setup preferable to Link or wireless streaming configuration?
- Does the desired software belong to the native Quest catalog or a PC VR library?
Answering those questions separates the ordinary PC-free purchase from the optional computer-connected expansion. It also prevents a common mistake: buying a cable or gaming PC before confirming that the intended software actually requires one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Meta Quest headset work with a phone instead of a gaming PC?
The headset’s standalone mode does not depend on a gaming PC, but the supplied evidence does not establish a complete phone setup or every phone’s compatibility. Follow the current Meta setup instructions for your headset and treat any companion-device requirement as a changeable software detail, not as proof that PC VR is required.
Does every game sold for Quest run without a computer?
Only software released as a compatible native Quest experience runs directly on the headset. A title can be associated with the Quest name while also having a separate PC VR edition, so check the platform label for the exact version you intend to install.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can I add PC VR after starting with standalone Quest?
Yes. Standalone use and PC VR are separate modes, so you can begin without a computer and later connect a supported headset through Meta Quest Link or stream from a computer with Steam Link. The later choice still depends on the computer, software and connection requirements current at that time.
Is a wireless connection required for normal Quest games?
Standalone play is distinct from Steam Link streaming, which Steam documents as requiring a compatible wireless-network setup between the computer and headset. Because network and account instructions can change with software versions, verify the current requirements for any connected or streamed feature before configuring it.
