Meta promises at least five years of security updates for a device after its initial retail release. That is a minimum security commitment—not a promise of five years of new features, a confirmed last-patch date, or a guarantee that the headset will stop working when support ends. Quest 1 illustrates the distinction: new features stopped with Quest software version 50, while security patches and bug fixes continued until August 2024.
What does Meta’s five-year Quest update policy promise?
Meta’s published device-security policy promises security updates for at least five years after a device’s initial retail release. “At least” matters: five years is a minimum support period, not a scheduled expiration date. Are software updates and security updates the same thing?
No. Security updates address security support; feature updates add or change capabilities. Meta’s five-year policy is specifically about security updates, while the Quest 1 feature cutoff was covered by a separate lifecycle notice.
This distinction is useful when interpreting a support announcement. “No new features” does not necessarily mean that security patches have ended. Does Quest 3S get five years of updates?
Quest 3S falls under Meta’s stated minimum of at least five years of security updates after initial retail release. That does not mean five years of new features, nor does it establish a precise final security-update date for Quest 3S.
The same interpretation applies to Quest 3: the policy is a minimum security commitment, not a model-by-model schedule. When comparing headsets, treat Quest 3 and Quest 3S as current replacement options only in the context of their own features and price; do not assume either has a known support end date unless Meta publishes one.

Support for the headset and support for individual apps are separate issues. Meta’s Quest 1 notice treated acceptance of new apps separately from feature and security maintenance.
