To stop Meta Muse interactions from being used to improve Meta’s AI models, open Settings → Data Controls and turn off Help improve our AI models. That switch controls model-training use; it does not remove permissions already granted to connected apps, erase existing chats or files, cancel tasks, or delete activity created on third-party services. For a fuller privacy reset, review each app connection, remove or forget stored information, and use Reset Muse when you need a broad cleanup. Muse is an agent that can browse, use connected services and continue work in a virtual machine, so privacy depends on both training consent and the actions you authorize.
What does Muse collect, and why do the settings matter?
Muse is an agent rather than a conventional chatbot. It can browse websites, work inside a virtual machine (VM), connect to services such as email or a marketplace, and continue tasks in the background. Its permissions therefore determine not only what it can read, but also what it can send, buy, change or publish.

- Training use: whether Muse interaction data may be used to improve Meta’s AI models.
- Live access: which connected apps Muse can reach and what actions it may take.
- Stored information: which chats, files, memories and active tasks remain in Muse.
- External activity: what a third-party website or service retains after Muse visits or acts there.
Changing one category does not automatically change the others. For example, turning off AI-training use does not revoke an email connection, and deleting a chat does not undo a purchase or remove a record held by the site where Muse acted.
How do I stop Muse from using my chats to train AI?
Use Muse’s Data Controls switch. A September 21, 2026 walkthrough reported this path: Settings → Data Controls → Help improve our AI models → Off. Meta’s own security explanation describes the same opt-out concept as a simple switch in Muse settings.
- Open Muse and select Settings.
- Open Data Controls.
- Find Help improve our AI models.
- Switch it off and confirm if Muse presents a confirmation dialog.
- Return to Data Controls and verify that the switch remains off.
Menu names may change while Muse rolls out in stages. If you do not see the exact wording, look for a setting under Data Controls that refers to improving, training or using your interactions for Meta AI models. Do not assume that a general “privacy” or “personalization” control is equivalent; the relevant control is the one governing model-training use.
The switch addresses future use covered by that setting. It does not delete your existing history, remove files from the VM, disconnect services or erase records created on an external website. Those jobs require separate controls.
Does turning off AI training stop Meta from seeing my Muse data?
No. The opt-out limits use of your interactions for model training; it is not a promise that Meta can never access operational data. Meta says Muse data is isolated in each user’s VM and that personnel access is restricted by operational policy, but the company also says access is not technically impossible when needed to support, secure or operate the service.
Meta says Muse conversations and data in the VM are not shared with Meta ad systems. That statement concerns the ad systems themselves, not every possible consequence of Muse activity elsewhere. If Muse browses a retailer, social network or marketplace while signed in as you, that third party can record the visit or action under its own terms. Such activity may then influence advertising or recommendations on that service, even though Meta says Muse’s conversations and VM data are not sent to Meta’s ad systems.

What are Muse’s privacy controls, and what does each one do?
The controls overlap in everyday language but have different effects. This table shows the job each control is intended to perform.

Use the narrowest control that matches your goal. A single sensitive file may call for deletion; a learned preference may call for Forget; an account-level cleanup may justify Reset Muse.
How do I limit what connected apps Muse can access?
Open Muse’s connected-services or permissions area and review every service one by one. Meta says people choose which apps Muse connects to and how much access it gets. The product description says supported actions can be set to allow once, always allow or deny.

- Remove connections you no longer use.
- For services you keep, choose the smallest useful scope. Prefer a single approved action over an ongoing permission when both are available.
- Use allow once for sensitive or infrequent tasks. Reserve always allow for low-risk, repetitive work you understand.
- Deny permissions that are not necessary for the current task, especially sending messages, purchasing, changing account settings or sharing files.
- After changing permissions, start a small, reversible task and check what Muse can actually see or do.
Turning off model training does not change any of these permissions. Conversely, disconnecting an app does not automatically opt your existing conversations out of training; check both controls separately.
How should I review Muse before it sends, buys or changes something?
Muse is designed to ask before sensitive actions such as sending an email or making a purchase and to provide an audit trail. Treat those prompts and the trail as required checkpoints, not optional reassurance.
Before you approve
- Confirm the recipient, destination, amount, quantity and account.
- Read the exact text Muse is about to send, including attachments, links and personal details.
- Check that the browser page is the intended service and that the signed-in account is yours.
- For purchases or bookings, verify taxes, recurring charges, cancellation terms and delivery information.
After the action
- Open Muse’s activity or audit trail and confirm what tool calls and actions occurred.
- Check the external service itself for sent messages, orders, reservations, changed settings or uploaded files.
- Save confirmation numbers for transactions you intended to keep, and cancel or dispute anything unexpected through the service that processed it.
An Associated Press report in October 2026 described a real-world pricing error and misunderstandings about permissions. That illustrates why review remains necessary even when approval prompts are enabled: an agent can misunderstand a page, a price or the scope of an instruction.
How do I delete Muse chats, files and memories?
Use deletion for specific material and Forget for specific information Muse has learned. Meta says users can inspect, edit and download VM files and can tell Muse to forget particular information.

Delete a message or file
In the relevant conversation or file view, select the item’s delete control and confirm. Repeat for each item that should no longer remain in Muse. Deleting a chat does not automatically disconnect the apps used in that chat, and it does not remove a copy held by an email provider, marketplace, booking service or another external site.
Tell Muse to forget a fact
Use the Forget capability for a specific learned detail, such as a preference, personal fact or instruction you no longer want Muse to retain. Be precise about what should be forgotten. Then inspect the related conversation or memory view to confirm that the item is no longer listed. Forgetting a fact is not a substitute for deleting the messages or files that contained it.
Review VM files
Inspect the VM’s files before deleting anything. Download records you are legally or operationally required to keep, then remove unnecessary copies. Also check downloaded documents, browser files and attachments: deleting the conversation alone may leave a separate file entry.
When should I use Reset Muse?
Use Reset Muse when you want a broad, account-level cleanup rather than a few targeted deletions. Independent reporting describes Reset Muse as deleting chat history, files and active tasks. Because it is broader and potentially destructive, treat it as a last step after preserving anything you need.

- Finish, cancel or document tasks that are still running.
- Download files and transaction records you need to retain.
- Disconnect connected services, especially accounts that contain sensitive messages, payments or personal documents.
- Open Muse’s reset control, read the confirmation text and confirm only if you accept the loss of the listed data.
- After the reset, sign in to important third-party services and check for activity Muse created before the reset.
- Re-connect only the services and permissions you actually need, using allow-once or deny settings wherever practical.
Meta’s public materials do not promise one universal purge deadline for every operational record, log or backup. A reset should therefore be understood as a broad product cleanup, not proof that every copy disappears instantly from every system.
Can I disconnect Muse from email or Facebook Marketplace?
Yes. Muse’s launch information says people can change access or disconnect a service whenever they want. Open the connected-apps list, select the service and choose its disconnect or remove-access option. Repeat the process for email, Facebook Marketplace and any other service you no longer want Muse to reach.
Disconnecting prevents future access through that connection; it does not retract an email already sent, cancel a Marketplace listing, remove a message from a recipient’s inbox or erase a transaction record. Check the external service directly for those consequences. If you reconnect later, begin with a one-time permission and test a low-risk task.

What happens to Muse activity on third-party websites?
Muse may browse and act as your signed-in user. The website can therefore log page views, searches, messages, listings, purchases or other events under your account. Those records are governed by the third party’s privacy policy and retention practices, not by Muse’s delete or reset controls.

This distinction explains how both of the following can be true:
- Meta says Muse conversations and VM data are not shared with Meta ad systems.
- A marketplace or retailer can still use activity created by Muse to personalize its own ads, recommendations or account history.
To reduce this exposure, disconnect services you do not need, avoid giving Muse standing access to shopping or messaging accounts, and review the external account after every sensitive task.
Are Muse’s safeguards technical guarantees or policy commitments?
They are a combination, and the difference matters. Permission prompts, VM isolation and action controls are product and architectural measures. Statements about restricted staff access, ad-system separation and how training data is used are also commitments about Meta’s policies and operations.
Meta describes each user’s VM as isolated and says personnel access is restricted by operational policy. It also acknowledges that access may be possible when required to support, secure or operate Muse. That is stronger than unrestricted access, but it is not a mathematical guarantee that no employee or system component can ever access operational data.
Likewise, an approval prompt can reduce accidental sends or purchases without eliminating agent mistakes. Review permissions and audit records as part of your process rather than treating any single safeguard as absolute.
What should I do if the training switch or reset does not appear?
Muse is a newly launched product, announced by Meta on September 8, 2026, with staged availability. Menu wording and control placement can therefore differ by account, region, platform or rollout stage.
- Update Muse and reopen Settings, then look specifically under Data Controls.
- Search for wording about improving, training or using interactions for AI models.
- Check that you are in Muse settings rather than the general settings for another Meta product.
- If Reset Muse is missing, use available delete and Forget controls, disconnect apps, and contact Meta support through the in-product help path.
- Capture the visible setting names and date of the change for your records.
Do not infer that a missing switch means opt-out is active. Until the control is visible and confirmed off, limit sensitive conversations and connected permissions.
What is the safest order for a complete Muse privacy review?
Use this sequence when setting up Muse for the first time or after a privacy concern.
- Opt out of training: turn off Help improve our AI models in Data Controls.
- Inventory access: list every connected app and the actions each one can perform.

What does Meta’s published information establish—and what remains uncertain?
Meta has explicitly described Muse as an agent that can use connected services, ask before sensitive actions, and let people change access or disconnect services. Meta AI Research has explicitly said interaction trajectories may help train model checkpoints and that users can opt out with a settings switch. Meta also says Muse conversations and VM data are not shared with Meta ad systems.
Those statements do not establish a universal deletion deadline for every operational or backup record, a guarantee that an agent will never make an error, or a promise that activity on another website will be erased when you delete Muse data. No independent usage, accuracy or privacy-protection percentage was published in the sources available for this launch period. Treat the controls as practical risk-reduction tools and verify important outcomes in the external service involved.

Will turning off Muse training delete conversations that were already used?

Can Muse still read an app after I delete the chat where I used it?
