For routine construction progress and defect documentation, use a smartphone as the default. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) says a smartphone or small pocket camera is sufficient for site photography when each image serves a defined field-report purpose. Meta AI glasses add hands-free capture, but the available product information does not establish the framing, filing, retention, or project-control workflow needed to replace a phone. A body-worn camera makes sense only when a project has a specific need for hands-free video or an event record, together with rules for privacy, access, retention, and review.
The right choice depends less on camera novelty than on the record you must produce: a deliberate still image of a defect, a progress series that can be compared over time, or video evidence of an event. This guide explains what each device can contribute, where the evidence is limited, and how to build a defensible workflow.

Which camera is best for construction documentation?
A smartphone is the best-supported general-purpose option for most construction documentation. It is easy to aim deliberately, produces still photographs suited to field reports, and can be incorporated into an existing project filing process. Meta AI glasses are useful when holding a phone is impractical, but their hands-free advantage does not by itself solve project naming, location tagging, retention, or review. A body-worn camera is a specialist choice for defined video or event-recording needs rather than a replacement for ordinary progress photographs.
AIA’s guidance is the clearest baseline: a smartphone or small pocket camera is sufficient for site photography. That is a statement about adequacy, not a claim that every phone has identical image quality, durability, storage, or software. The device should be selected after the project team defines what the record must show and how it will enter the project archive.

What should a construction photo prove?
Every image should answer a documentation question. AIA advises that photographs normally support specific points in field-report narratives rather than accumulate as an unstructured visual diary.
Does the work differ from the contract documents?
Use a photograph to show a visible deviation, incomplete item, installation issue, or condition that needs comparison with drawings, specifications, or an approved change. Frame the condition so the reader can identify exactly what is different. If the issue is small, move close enough to make it legible, then add a wider view that locates it in the room or elevation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What progress occurred since the previous visit?
Repeat views from comparable positions when documenting progress. A new wall, installed equipment, completed finish, or concealed work should be framed so the image directly supports the written progress statement. Avoid a collection of nearly identical shots that does not show a meaningful change.
What is the overall status of the work?
Use a wide view for overall progress. Establishing images can show which areas are active, what remains incomplete, and how work is moving through the site. They are most useful when the location and date are recorded with the file.
Why does purpose matter in a dispute?
AIA warns that unnecessary records can become a risk in a later dispute. A large, redundant image set may contain conflicting angles, unlabelled conditions, or photographs taken before or after a relevant event without enough context. A smaller set of purposeful, traceable images is easier to interpret and defend.
The AIA’s reproduction of section 3.6.2 of the AIA B101 Standard Form of Agreement Between Owner and Architect describes the architect’s obligation to visit at intervals appropriate to the construction stage “to become generally familiar with the progress and quality of the portion of the Work … completed, and to determine, in general, if the Work observed is being performed in a manner indicating that the Work, when fully completed, will be in accordance with the Contract Documents.” Photography supports that observation; it does not replace professional judgment, inspections, testing, or contract administration.

Meta’s July 2026 FAQ says photographs and videos captured for the glasses’ gallery remain stored privately on the glasses until the user imports them to a phone. That is a device-transfer description, not a construction records system. The project still needs a defined method for naming files, identifying the area, linking an image to a report or issue, controlling access, and retaining the final record.
What happens to gallery photos and videos?
For gallery capture, the glasses record locally first. The user then imports the material to a phone. Plan for that transfer as a separate step in the site process: a pair of glasses does not automatically establish the authoritative project copy, a backup, or a connection to the project-management platform.
Before deployment, test the exact glasses generation, phone, operating-system version, companion application, and site connectivity used by the team. Confirm that an imported file retains the capture date and time expected by your records process, and decide who is responsible for completing the import after each visit. The cited product information does not establish a universal construction filing or retention workflow.
What does the capture light indicate?
Meta says a capture LED blinks during gallery photo and video capture; during video recording it remains active while recording. Meta also says the light has no off switch and that, beginning with second-generation glasses, camera capture is disabled if the LED is blocked. Meta has described updates intended to detect physical tampering or destruction of the indicator.

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
Those statements apply to the modes and generations Meta describes. They should not be simplified to “the LED shows every camera use.” The visible signal is tied to content recorded to the gallery, while other camera-assisted functions can behave differently.
Can AI camera features run without the LED?
Oakley’s official FAQ for newer camera-based AI models says some AI interactions, such as identifying a landmark or plant, do not activate the capture LED because the resulting material is not intended to become gallery content. It also describes photos used for AI features as subject to Meta’s stated data practices. AI processing is therefore not equivalent to a gallery photograph, and the behavior should be checked for the specific model and feature you plan to use on a worksite.
For worker communication, explain both categories: visible gallery capture and camera-assisted AI processing. A person may reasonably interpret a camera-equipped wearable differently from a phone held openly, so the project should not rely on the LED alone as its privacy explanation.
What has not been established about the glasses?
The available information does not provide a construction field test or comparable measurements for image quality, battery runtime, ruggedness, upload reliability, project-management integration, or total cost. It also does not show that the glasses can meet a particular owner’s contract, safety, privacy, or record-retention requirements. Treat hands-free capture as a potential convenience, not as evidence of a complete documentation solution.

Why is a phone still the default for site photography?
A phone supports deliberate still photography, which is what AIA says most construction documentation requires. The operator can hold it visibly, choose a viewpoint, check the frame before moving on, and take a second establishing image when scale or location is unclear.
How does deliberate framing help?
Phones make it straightforward to compose a close view of a defect and then a wider context view. When scale matters, include an object of known size, such as a standard component or measuring reference, without obscuring the condition. Keep the reference in the same plane as the subject when possible; a nearby object can mislead the viewer about dimensions.
How does a phone fit a field-report process?
A phone can be used as the capture device while the project’s existing process handles file naming, area or grid references, author, date, issue number, and report linkage. That still requires discipline: a phone does not automatically create compliant records. Decide whether the original file, an exported copy, or a processed image is the official record, and preserve the original when the project’s policy requires it.
When is phone video enough?
AIA’s guidance indicates that most construction photographs are still images and that video is needed only occasionally. A phone is therefore adequate when a short video is useful to explain movement, sequence, access, or an unusual condition but the project does not require continuous or evidential body-worn recording.
When does a body-worn camera make sense?
A body-worn camera is appropriate when the project has a specific, documented need for hands-free video or an event record. A UK government body-worn video policy describes evidential and security uses, including recording events for later review. That policy is UK Department for Work and Pensions guidance, not a universal construction rule, so it cannot be adopted without checking the project’s jurisdiction and contract requirements.
What is the strongest use case?
Choose body-worn video when the question is “What happened during this defined event?” rather than “What does this installed condition look like?” Examples can include a controlled walkthrough, an incident response, a security event, or a process where both hands must remain available and a continuous sequence is material.

What controls are required?
A body-worn deployment should specify when recording starts and stops, who may activate it, how people are notified, who can view the footage, how exports are authenticated, how long records are retained, and when material is disclosed. It should also define how an event is indexed so reviewers can find the relevant segment without searching an entire shift.
Why is it a poor default for progress photos?
Wearable video can capture far more people, conversations, and unrelated activity than a purposeful still photograph. It may also produce a large review burden while offering less control over the exact framing needed for a field-report item. Unless the project has accepted those trade-offs and established custody and retention rules, a phone remains the safer baseline.
How do the three options compare?
The following comparison is qualitative. No comparable tests were found for image quality, battery runtime, ruggedness, price, upload reliability, or integration with project-management systems.
| Decision axis | Meta AI glasses | Phone | Body-worn camera |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hands-free capture | Main potential advantage; no construction-specific field test is established here. | Requires holding the device, but supports intentional framing. | Designed for wearable capture; strongest case is a defined video or event need. |
| Deliberate still photos | Gallery photos are possible; assess framing and transfer on the exact model and workflow. | Best-supported baseline for routine progress and defect photos in AIA guidance. | Model capabilities vary; the cited policy concerns body-worn video, not construction still-photo quality. |
| Video or event record | Supports video; behavior depends on model and mode. | Suitable when occasional video is needed. | Official policy describes evidential event capture and security use. |
| Visible signal | LED indicates gallery capture; some newer-model AI camera uses may not activate it. | Can be held visibly and framed deliberately; phones do not have the same front capture LED described for the glasses. | Check the exact model’s signaling and the project policy; the cited policy does not specify hardware behavior. |
| Filing and retention | Meta describes capture on the glasses followed by import to a phone; project archive steps are not established. | Can support field-report photography, but filing still depends on the user’s process. | Use only with defined custody, retention, access, and event-review procedures. |
| Privacy and site fit | Wearable capture can be less obvious; explain capture modes and account for AI-feature data handling. | Easier to frame visibly and deliberately; worker privacy still applies. | May record people and events continuously while activated; define purpose, access, retention, and lawful use. |
How should a team choose between the devices?
Start with the record, not the hardware. Use this sequence before buying or authorizing a device.
- Define the record. Decide whether the deliverable is a still image of a condition, a repeatable progress view, an occasional explanatory video, or an event record.
- Set the framing requirement. If the reviewer must see a precise defect, dimension, connection, or finish, favor a device that lets the operator check and repeat the composition.
- Set the hands-free requirement. If both hands must remain available for a legitimate task or an event must be captured without holding a device, evaluate a wearable. Do not assume that convenience outweighs privacy and filing controls.
- Define the archive path. Specify how files move from the device to the project record, who performs the transfer, what metadata is required, and how duplicates or edited exports are handled.
- Check visible signaling and consent. Confirm what the exact model indicates during gallery capture and during AI camera interactions. Explain the behavior to workers and visitors before use.
- Confirm project authority. Review owner, contractor, architect, safety, labor, and information-governance rules. A device that is technically capable may still be prohibited on a particular site.
What is a practical construction documentation workflow?
Use the following process for each site visit, regardless of the camera selected.
- Prepare the shot list. List the deviations, progress items, and overall views needed for the visit. Tie each item to a field-report point, issue, room, grid, elevation, or other project location.
- Capture the context first when needed. Take a wider view that identifies the area, then a closer view that makes the condition legible. For a progress series, use a repeatable viewpoint and orientation.
- Show scale when scale matters. Include a known-size reference or a measuring device positioned so the viewer can interpret it. Note the measurement in the report rather than relying on visual estimation alone.
- Check the image before leaving. Verify focus, exposure, obstruction, orientation, and that the condition is actually visible. Retake an image that is ambiguous instead of compensating with a long caption later.
- Record identifying information. Capture the date, area, author, issue or report reference, and any required drawing or specification reference in the project’s chosen system.
- Transfer and preserve. For glasses, import gallery files to the phone as Meta describes. Then move them into the approved project archive. For any device, preserve the original according to the project’s records policy and distinguish it from resized, annotated, or redacted copies.
- Review for redundancy. Remove accidental duplicates from the working set while retaining records that the contract or policy requires. Do not delete material that may be relevant to an incident without following the project’s retention procedure.
- Report hazards through the site process. AIA says an apparent unsafe condition should be reported immediately to the contractor’s superintendent. A photograph can document the condition, but it is not a substitute for the required safety notification.
How should privacy and recording rules be handled?
AIA advises avoiding recognizable worker faces unless they are unavoidable. Apply that principle during planning, not only during later editing: choose angles that show the work without unnecessarily identifying people, and pause capture when a person’s presence is irrelevant to the record.
For glasses and body-worn cameras, explain when gallery recording occurs, when an AI camera feature may process an image without creating a gallery file, and who controls the resulting data. Obtain the approvals required by the owner, contractor, site rules, and applicable law. Privacy and recording requirements vary by jurisdiction and project; the available sources do not provide legal advice or a universal consent procedure.
Define access at the project level. A person who may take a photograph does not necessarily need permission to view all body-worn footage or AI-processed material. Limit access to the roles that need it, log disclosures where required, and establish a retention period before recording begins.

Glasses footage is stranded on the device
Import gallery files to the paired phone after the visit, verify that the transfer completed, and move the files into the approved archive. Assign ownership of this step; otherwise the project may have no authoritative copy even though the glasses recorded the material.
Workers assume the LED signals every camera operation
Explain the distinction between gallery capture and camera-assisted AI features. For newer models, Oakley’s FAQ says some AI interactions do not activate the capture LED. Use site policy and clear notification rather than the light alone to communicate when a wearable is in use.
A body-worn recording contains unrelated people or conversations
Stop recording when the defined event ends, restrict access, and follow the project’s retention and redaction rules. Revise activation guidance so future recordings begin only for the approved purpose.
A photograph is being used instead of a safety report
Notify the contractor’s superintendent immediately through the established site process. Attach the image to the safety record only after the urgent communication has occurred.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

The cited material does not establish current prices, model availability, battery life, durability ratings, upload reliability, or a universal subscription requirement for any of the three categories. Do not treat an advertised price or a particular model’s specification as a construction total cost without checking the exact market, generation, accessories, connectivity, storage, support, and records software involved.
At minimum, a phone workflow requires a suitable camera, enough storage, a method to transfer files, and a project archive. A glasses workflow adds the exact glasses generation, companion phone and application, import responsibility, user training, and a decision about AI-feature data handling. A body-worn workflow adds activation rules, notification, access control, event indexing, retention, and review capacity. Those process requirements can matter more than the purchase price.
Which option fits common construction scenarios?
| Scenario | Most defensible starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Routine progress photographs for field reports | Phone | AIA identifies a smartphone or small pocket camera as sufficient, and still images are usually the required record. |
| Close documentation of a defect or deviation | Phone | Intentional framing, a context view, and a scale reference are easier to control. |
| Occasional explanatory walkthrough video | Phone, unless both hands must remain free | AIA indicates video is needed only occasionally; a wearable is justified only by a defined hands-free requirement. |
| Defined incident or security event | Body-worn camera, if policy permits | The cited UK policy describes evidential event and security uses, but the project must create its own lawful controls. |
| Hands-free capture during a task | Meta AI glasses or a body-worn camera after approval | Both can address hands-free needs, but glasses require testing of framing and import while body-worn video requires stronger event and retention controls. |
| Unstructured “capture everything” site walk | None of the options without a defined plan | Purpose, traceability, privacy, and retention are missing; collecting more files does not create a better record. |
What should be in the deployment checklist?
- Document the purpose of each image or recording category.
- Identify the approved device model and software version.
- Test framing, transfer, metadata, storage, and archive access on the actual site workflow.
- Define naming, location, author, date, issue, report link, access, and retention fields.
- Explain gallery capture, AI camera processing, and visible indicators to workers and visitors.
- Set rules for recognizable faces, incidental conversations, redaction, and disclosure.
- Specify who starts and stops body-worn recording and how events are indexed.
- Provide a recovery path for failed transfers, lost devices, corrupted files, or accidental recording.
- Train users to report apparent unsafe conditions immediately rather than relying on a photograph.
- Review the workflow with the owner, contractor, architect, safety lead, and information-governance authority before site deployment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Meta AI glasses replace a phone for every construction photo?
Not on the evidence available here. They can reduce the need to hold a device, but the project must still verify framing, import reliability, metadata, and archive controls on the exact glasses generation and companion phone. For routine field-report stills, the phone remains the better-supported baseline.
Does the light on smart glasses prove that no image was processed?
No. The light described by Meta signals gallery photo or video capture, while Oakley says some newer AI camera interactions do not activate it because the material is not intended for the gallery. Site notices and policy should explain both behaviors instead of treating the LED as a complete privacy guarantee.
What should a construction body-camera policy say about footage?
It should define an approved purpose, activation and stop rules, notification, authorized viewers, export and authentication steps, retention, redaction, and event indexing. A general body-worn-video policy from the UK Department for Work and Pensions is a reference point for evidential use, not a universal rule for construction projects.
How can a team prove that two progress photos show the same location?
Use a repeatable viewpoint and orientation, record the area or grid reference, and include a wide establishing image when the detail alone could be ambiguous. Keep the date and author with the project record so the pair can be interpreted without relying on memory.
