Are McDonald’s Pokémon cards real TCG cards?

“Promotional” describes how the cards were distributed, not a separate digital-only game. A physical card can still have a Pokémon name, attacks, numbers and other printed information used to identify that particular release. However, the promotional pack, its surrounding inserts and its distribution terms are different from a Pokémon TCG expansion booster.

The ordinary-booster figures should not be stretched into a rule that every Pokémon product has 10 cards. The Pokémon Company International’s 2026 30th Celebration announcement documents a special booster with five foil cards, one foil Basic Energy and one TCG Live code. It is a useful reminder to read the packaging or the product’s official announcement for the exact set.

A different campaign can change the insert, artwork, foil treatment, card list or purchase conditions.
What the 2026 date means
A rolling McDonald’s U.S. menu page visible on October 30, 2026 lists a November 10, 2026 Pokémon Happy Meal entry with 15 collectible toys and 15 collectible trading cards. Because November 10 is still in the future on that date, the entry does not establish that the offer is available on October 30. It also does not state the new pack size, complete card list or purchase terms.
Do not combine that future-dated menu entry with the January 2025 four-card campaign, and do not treat an unconfirmed start date as a launch fact. Recheck the current McDonald’s announcement and local restaurant terms before assuming a later promotion has begun.

How can I identify which McDonald’s card I have?
Start with the campaign, region and printed information on the card. A listing that says only “McDonald’s Pokémon card” is incomplete because several campaigns and countries have used different assortments.

- Record the campaign year and country. A U.S. January 2025 card should not be compared automatically with a 2023 Match Battle card or a promotion from another market.
- Read every printed identifier. Note the card name, collector number, set or expansion code, regulation mark and any visible promotional marking.
- Compare the exact printing. Two cards featuring the same Pokémon can differ by release, artwork, finish, numbering or legality.

Pokémon’s Scarlet & Violet-era identification explanation says expansion symbols were replaced by expansion codes at the card’s bottom left. Do McDonald’s Pokémon packs include a code card?

McDonald’s said that a qualifying 2025 purchase made through its app could unlock a one-time Pokémon TCG Pocket reward. The offer had conditions involving the app, email opt-in and redemption. That reward was tied to the qualifying app transaction; it was not described as a code card inside every physical Happy Meal pack.
Pokémon TCG Live code
A TCG Live code is the digital element Pokémon Support documents for an ordinary booster. It should not be treated as interchangeable with a Pocket reward, even though both are connected to Pokémon games.

Legacy migration clarification
Pokémon Support separately states that McDonald’s Happy Meal cards did not migrate from Pokémon TCG Online to Pokémon TCG Live. That statement concerns a legacy digital migration question. It does not mean the physical cards disappear, nor does it by itself decide whether a physical printing is legal for in-person play.
Can I use McDonald’s Pokémon cards in a tournament?
Sometimes, but the answer depends on the individual card and the current format rules—not simply on its McDonald’s origin. Play! Pokémon explains that Standard legality is tied to regulation marks, with allowances for older or unmarked printings when an eligible reprint carries a currently legal mark.
- Identify the exact printing. Use the campaign information and the card’s printed number or code.
- Read the regulation mark. The mark is one of the key indicators for Standard-format rotation.
- Check the current official card database and event rules. Confirm the card’s present status, including any errata.
- Ask the event organizer when uncertain. Local tournament procedures can require a judge’s ruling on a particular printing or condition.
A promotional card is therefore neither automatically banned nor automatically authorized. The 2026 30th Celebration example reinforces the point: a foil classic reprint can exist without being Standard-legal. Legality is a rules question for the specific card and format.
Are McDonald’s cards different from regular set cards in gameplay?
The physical origin does not by itself tell you whether a card has a different game function. The campaign announcement establishes the assortment and distribution, but it does not establish that every promotional card is a new gameplay design, a particular holo variant or a specific scarcity tier.

Are McDonald’s Pokémon cards rarer or more valuable?

What to check when buying a single card or sealed pack
- Campaign year and country.
- Exact card count and whether the seller shows the actual contents.
- Condition, including whitening, dents, scratches and curling.
- Whether the item is sealed, opened or assembled from loose cards.
- Photographs of the front, back and printed identifiers.
- Whether the listing confuses a Pocket reward or TCG Live code with a physical card.
A binder and protective sleeves can help organize or protect a collection, but they do not authenticate a card or establish its value.

How should collectors compare a McDonald’s card with a regular expansion card?
Use a fixed checklist so that distribution hype does not replace card-level evidence.
- Define the object. Decide whether you are comparing a loose physical card, a sealed Happy Meal pack, a regular booster or a digital reward.
