There is no single composer or single complete album called the Mass Effect soundtrack. Jack Wall and Sam Hulick lead the original game’s score, Wall returns for Mass Effect 2 with a larger composing team, Clint Mansell and Hulick are credited on the principal Mass Effect 3 album, and BioWare identifies John Paesano as Andromeda‘s composer. Additional composers, downloadable-content albums, curated compilations, and interactive in-game music make the catalog much broader than any one release.
This guide separates those credits, explains how the musical styles change from game to game, and shows how the original albums, Legendary Edition bonus, trilogy vinyl, and Andromeda records differ.

The answer depends on the game and on whether you mean the main score, downloadable content, credits music, or a compilation. Album-level artist lines are useful guides, but they should not be treated as proof that one person wrote every individual cue.
| Game or release | Principal documented credits | Additional context | Musical character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mass Effect (2007) | Jack Wall and Sam Hulick | Richard Jacques and David Kates supplied additional music; Faunts wrote and performed the end-credits song “m4 part II” | Electronic science-fiction ambience, recurring themes, and contrasting character and location cues |
| Mass Effect 2 (2010) | Jack Wall, with Sam Hulick, David Kates, and Jimmy Hinson named on his composing team | Main score, separate Atmospheric and Combat releases, and several DLC albums | Classic science-fiction sonorities expanded with more orchestral and cinematic writing |
| Mass Effect 3 (2012) | Clint Mansell and Sam Hulick on the principal album | DLC albums credit Sascha Dikikiyan, Cris Velasco, and Hulick in different combinations | Emotional, cinematic writing shaped around war, loss, escalation, and resolution |
| Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017) | John Paesano | BioWare describes a blend of orchestra and synthesized elements | Orchestral breadth combined with analog-synth colors recalling classic futuristic film scoring |
The safest way to answer “Who composed Mass Effect?” is therefore to name the game and the release before naming a composer. A soundtrack compilation can contain music from several contributors, while a DLC album can have a different credit line from the base game.

What is distinctive about the first Mass Effect score?
The 2007 game credits Jack Wall as lead composer and producer, with Wall and Sam Hulick credited as score composers. Richard Jacques and David Kates contributed additional music, so describing the entire score as solely Wall’s is inaccurate.
How the first game uses sound
The score’s electronic science-fiction ambience supports the setting’s technology, isolation, and exploration. Recurring themes give major locations and characters musical identity, while quieter passages leave room for dialogue and environmental sound. These are listening descriptions rather than a claim that every cue uses the same palette.
Score versus credits song
Faunts’ “m4 part II” is the credits track, written and performed by the band. It is not the same thing as the instrumental score heard during missions, conversations, and exploration. Keeping that distinction prevents the common mistake of listing the band as a score composer.
Original album format
The documented United States release includes a CD. That disc is an album selection, not an exhaustive dump of every interactive cue in the game.
How did Mass Effect 2 change the musical approach?
Electronic Arts announced Jack Wall’s return for Mass Effect 2 in 2010. Wall named Sam Hulick, David Kates, and Jimmy Hinson as members of his composing team. EA described a score that combines classic science-fiction-inspired sounds with more expansive orchestral arrangements; its announcement referred to nearly three hours of orchestral arrangements for the game, not necessarily three hours on one commercially released album.
Orchestral scale and science-fiction color
The sequel broadens the first game’s palette. Synthesizers and processed textures continue to signal technology and alien environments, while larger ensemble writing gives combat, loyalty missions, and major revelations a more cinematic scale. Dr. Ray Muzyka summarized Wall’s work as “perfectly blends classic sci-fi inspired sounds with unique arrangements” in the January 11, 2010 EA/BioWare announcement.

Why there is more than one ME2 album
The main Original Videogame Score is separate from catalogued Atmospheric and Combat releases. Downloadable content also received distinct albums, including Kasumi’s Stolen Memory, Overlord, Lair of the Shadow Broker, and Arrival. Treating those names as alternate editions of one complete album hides music that was released separately.
Useful listening anchors
The official trilogy vinyl listing includes “The Illusive Man,” “The Normandy Reborn,” and “Suicide Mission.” Their appearance in a compilation confirms that they were selected for that set; it does not, by itself, establish an individual cue’s composer beyond the documented album and game credits.
Who is credited on Mass Effect 3, and why is the answer complicated?
The principal Mass Effect 3 album lists Clint Mansell and Sam Hulick. That artist line is a release-level credit, not a complete cue-by-cue authorship list.
Base game and representative themes
“Leaving Earth” and “An End, Once and For All” are useful listening examples of the game’s emotional, cinematic war-and-resolution character. They demonstrate the score’s dramatic arc without proving that either cue was written by every composer named on the album.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteExtended Cut and DLC credits
The catalogued Extended Cut release lists Hulick and Mansell. Leviathan credits Sascha Dikikiyan and Cris Velasco, while Citadel credits Velasco, Dikikiyan, and Hulick. Christopher Lennertz appears on catalogued Mass Effect 2 DLC albums; that credit should not be transferred automatically to every Mass Effect 3 track.
Did Jack Wall compose Mass Effect 3?
Jack Wall’s documented return applies to Mass Effect 2. The principal Mass Effect 3 album is catalogued under Mansell and Hulick, with additional DLC-specific credits, so “Jack Wall composed ME3” is not a reliable description of the documented releases.

Is the Andromeda soundtrack orchestral or electronic?
It is both. BioWare identifies John Paesano as composer and describes the soundtrack as combining orchestral and synthesized elements, including analog synthesizers intended to evoke classic Blade Runner-style scoring.
What the hybrid palette does
Orchestral writing supplies scale for discovery, danger, and the Pathfinder’s larger decisions. Analog-synth colors add an exploratory, futuristic edge and connect the new galaxy to the series’ science-fiction identity. The combination is a contrast with, not a total break from, the original trilogy’s electronic and orchestral vocabulary.
Andromeda’s physical album
The official three-LP listing includes “A Trail of Hope,” “Wake Up,” “Pathfinder,” and extended versions. It advertises more than 50 minutes of previously unreleased music. Those details describe that specific three-record edition, not every digital or in-game track.
How does interactive music differ from a soundtrack album?
An album presents a fixed sequence of finished selections; the game can assemble music dynamically as play changes. Sam Hulick has explained that he delivered stems and that BioWare’s audio system selected layers according to gameplay intensity, with loopable middle sections.
What stems and layers mean
A combat cue can add or remove parts as danger rises, then return to a loopable section without restarting from the beginning. Exploration, dialogue, and transitions can likewise use different layers or edits. An album has to choose a start, end, and sequence, so it cannot reproduce every possible in-game combination.
Why “complete soundtrack” is ambiguous
“Complete” might mean every commercial album, every DLC release, every cue heard in the game, or every interactive stem. Those are different targets. A collector seeking the full listening experience should identify which target matters before buying a compilation or record.

What albums and compilations exist?
The release map below separates base-game albums, DLC, bonus compilations, and physical collections.
| Release type | Coverage | What it is not |
|---|---|---|
| Original Mass Effect album | Selected music from the 2007 game; documented United States CD release | Not the Faunts credits song plus every interactive cue in one archive |
| Mass Effect 2: Original Videogame Score | Main sequel score | Not the same release as the Atmospheric, Combat, or DLC albums |
| ME2 DLC albums | Kasumi’s Stolen Memory, Overlord, Lair of the Shadow Broker, and Arrival | Not interchangeable with the base-game score |
| Mass Effect 3 principal album | Main release credited to Mansell and Hulick | Not a complete statement of every DLC cue’s authorship |
| ME3 expansions | Extended Cut, Leviathan, and Citadel releases | Not one unified artist catalog |
| Mass Effect: Andromeda album | Paesano’s score, including the advertised extended pieces on the three-LP edition | Not a trilogy collection |
| Legendary Edition bonus | A historical digital promotion containing 88 trilogy tracks plus “Resynthesis,” a new launcher theme | Not the four-LP vinyl track list and not an ongoing giveaway |
| Official trilogy vinyl | Four LPs and 85 selected tracks from all three original-trilogy games, with some previously unreleased selections | Not every cue or every interactive layer |
What was the Legendary Edition soundtrack bonus?
EA described a 2021 promotional bonus of 88 trilogy tracks plus “Resynthesis,” the new launcher theme for Mass Effect Legendary Edition. The stated promotion ran from May 5 through May 31, 2021, so it should be treated as a historical offer rather than something readers can assume is still available.
EA’s separately accessible PC extras page lists original-soundtrack downloads for Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 3, and Andromeda. A game bundle, a promotional soundtrack bonus, and a download of game extras are different products; check the current EA page for the edition and files offered in your region.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is in the Mass Effect trilogy vinyl box set?
The official BioWare Gear listing describes a four-LP, 85-track Omni-Blade trilogy set assembled with SpaceLab9. It is a curated selection spanning all three original games, with some previously unreleased selections, rather than a claim that every game cue is present.
Why pressing details matter
BioWare also announced an earlier four-record trilogy pressing in 2016. Do not assume that announcement and the later store listing describe the same variant. The store catalog observed in 2026 marked both listed trilogy variants out of stock; retailer inventory, prices, and condition can change, so availability must be checked at the time of purchase.
How it compares with the Andromeda set
The trilogy box covers three games on four records. The Andromeda collection is a separate three-LP album focused on Paesano’s score and its extended selections. The three-LP set is not a larger replacement for the trilogy box, and the trilogy box is not an Andromeda soundtrack.

Where can you listen to Mass Effect music?
Choose the route that matches whether you want convenience, ownership, or the interactive experience.
- Digital game extras: Start with EA’s PC extras listings for the soundtrack downloads associated with Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 3, and Andromeda. Confirm that the file belongs to your edition and region before relying on an old download link.
- CD: The original Mass Effect album has a documented United States CD release. Current new-copy availability is not established, so distinguish an original pressing from a seller’s unofficial or used listing.
- Vinyl: The four-LP trilogy set and three-LP Andromeda set are physical collector editions with defined track selections. Check the exact pressing, seller condition, and current stock rather than assuming every listing is the same product.
- In-game playback: Playing the games is the only route that presents the adaptive layer system as designed, with stems and intensity-based changes. The album versions remain fixed listening sequences.
Which Mass Effect soundtrack format should you choose?
Use the following decision points before spending money or hunting for a specific release.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- One game: Choose that game’s main album and add its DLC release when a particular expansion matters.
- Original trilogy in one package: The four-LP set is the relevant physical compilation, but its 85 tracks are selected rather than exhaustive.
- Andromeda only: The Paesano-focused three-LP edition is the matching physical collection.
- Digital convenience: Check EA’s listed extras first, especially if you do not need a physical disc.
- Interactive context: Listen in the game when adaptive transitions and layered intensity are more important than a clean album sequence.
- Composer study: Keep base-game, DLC, and compilation credits in separate notes; a compilation artist line should not be used to assign every cue.
How were these soundtrack recommendations organized?
The organizing criteria are scope, documented credits, format, and listening purpose. A release was treated as a main score, DLC album, historical bonus, or curated physical compilation according to how its publisher or catalog describes it. The guide also distinguishes fixed album tracks from interactive in-game material and flags stock or promotional claims that can change over time.
What should you remember about the Mass Effect music catalog?
Think of the series as a family of scores rather than one album. Wall and Hulick shape the first game’s credited score, Wall’s ME2 team enlarges the orchestral and cinematic approach, Mansell and Hulick headline the principal ME3 release alongside separate DLC contributors, and Paesano gives Andromeda an explicit orchestra-and-analog-synth identity. Once those credits are separated from Faunts’ credits song, historical Legendary Edition bonus, and curated vinyl track lists, the catalog becomes much easier to navigate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the album tracks identical to the music heard during gameplay?
Not always. Gameplay can use stems, loops, and intensity-based layers that change during a scene, while an album fixes one edited sequence with a definite start and end. A disc or download therefore represents selected listening versions rather than every possible in-game arrangement.
Is “m4 part II” part of the instrumental score?
No. Faunts wrote and performed that song for the first game’s credits. It belongs to the credits-music category, separate from the instrumental cues composed for missions and exploration.
Recommended Free Tools
Can a compilation’s artist line identify the composer of a specific cue?
Usually not by itself. Compilation listings show which artists are represented on the release, but the documented album credit may cover many cues and contributors. Use a track-level primary credit when one is available instead of inferring authorship from a compilation appearance.
Is the 2021 Legendary Edition soundtrack promotion still available?
The announced offer was limited to May 5–31, 2021. Treat it as historical and check EA’s current extras listings for any downloads that are offered now; do not assume the old bonus can still be claimed.
