Mass Effect save recovery is possible only when an intact copy still exists—for example, on an older PC, in a redirected Documents folder, in OneDrive history, on PlayStation Plus, or on a USB backup. Reinstalling the game, buying a new drive, or enabling cloud storage cannot recreate a save that was never preserved. Start by stopping new saves, identify the exact edition and platform, and copy any surviving files before replacing anything.

Do not create more saves or accept a cloud/local overwrite prompt until you have inspected every possible copy. A missing save is often a location or account problem rather than destroyed data.
- Identify the setup: Legendary Edition or an original release; ME1, ME2 or ME3; Windows, PS4, PS5, or Xbox One; and the account that originally created the save.
- Classify the symptom: the character is absent from the load list, the game reports no saves, or a file is visible but will not load. The recovery choices differ slightly.

Where does Legendary Edition store saves on Windows?
For the Windows version of Mass Effect Legendary Edition, look in the user Documents tree, not the game-installation directory:

Restore a character folder from another Windows copy
- On the old PC, old Windows profile, or backup drive, locate

This procedure is a transfer of an existing character folder, not a repair of damaged bytes. If the old folder is itself unreadable, stop and preserve it rather than repeatedly opening or modifying it.
Could the save be in a different Documents folder?
Yes. A Windows reinstall, a new user profile, or Documents redirection can make a healthy save appear to vanish. Check the old computer and every Windows account that was used to play.

How do I recover a deleted or overwritten save with OneDrive?
OneDrive can help only when the save files were actually synchronized there. It offers two different recovery routes: the web Recycle bin for deleted files and Version history for earlier contents of an existing file.
Deleted files: Recycle bin
- Open OneDrive on the web for the account that held the Documents folder.
- Open Recycle bin and search for the
BioWareorMass Effect Legendary Editionpath. - Select the relevant folder or file and choose Restore.
- After restoration, copy the recovered folder to a separate location, then verify the Documents path used by the current Windows account.
Microsoft Support states that eligible deleted files in personal accounts can be restored for up to 30 days (2026 verification; the page’s publication year is not stated). That is a service limit, not a promise that every game save qualifies or remains available for the full period.
Overwritten or corrupted contents: Version history
- In OneDrive on the web, browse to the save file that still exists.
- Open the file’s Version history and inspect dates before the failure.
- Select an earlier version and restore it, or download a copy first if you need to preserve the current version for comparison.
- Keep a separate copy of the earlier file and test it only after backing up the complete destination folder.
Microsoft says OneDrive retains file Version history for 30 days (2026 verification; publication year not stated). Version history can provide an earlier intact copy; it does not repair a file when no usable version was retained.
Can Steam Cloud restore an older Mass Effect save?
Only conditionally. Steam says developers decide which files a game synchronizes, and a failed sync can leave the newest local progress on the previous computer. Steam support does not promise to recover lost cloud files.
- On every computer that has run the game, check the local Documents save tree first. The old computer may hold the newest character folder.
- Review the game’s Steam cloud status and any sync-conflict message. Do not select an overwrite option until you have copied both local versions.
- If the game reports no cloud copy or the cloud copy is older, preserve the local folder and use the intact copy that contains the wanted character.
- Do not assume a Steam installation backup includes developer-managed saves. Steam’s installation-backup guidance says such saves may require their own manual copy.
There is no verified title-specific promise that Legendary Edition saves are always in Steam Cloud, nor a documented Steam menu that reconstructs an arbitrary corrupted file. Treat cloud status as evidence to inspect, not as an automatic backup history.

How do I download a PlayStation Plus save?
You need an existing upload made by the same PlayStation user. Downloading an older cloud copy can replace a newer file on the console, so read the dates and preserve any current save you still need.
PS4 running the PS4 version
- Sign in to the user who originally uploaded the save.
- Open Settings > Application Data Management > Saved data in Online Storage > Download to System Storage.
- Select the Mass Effect game and the desired save.
- Review the overwrite warning and confirm only after checking that the cloud copy is the one you want.
PS5 running the PS4 version
PS4 games’ uploaded data is not automatically placed in PS5 storage. PlayStation’s documented path is:
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.

Select Saved Data (PS4) even when the game is being played on a PS5. These instructions concern the PS4 version included in Legendary Edition’s supported console release, not a hypothetical native PS5 edition.
How do I use a USB save copy on PS5?
An individual PS4-version save can be copied from a compatible USB device without restoring an entire console backup.
- Connect the USB device containing the existing save copy.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4) > Copy or Delete from USB Drive.
- Select the Mass Effect game and the save data to copy to console storage.
- Check the game under the correct PlayStation user and confirm the restored character appears.
The reverse menu can copy PS4-version saves from a PS5 to USB for prevention. This is an operation on an existing save; a new USB drive cannot retrieve data that was never backed up. For PS4 console backups, PlayStation documents compatible FAT32 or exFAT USB storage.
Should I restore a complete PlayStation backup?
Only as a last resort, when the backup is known to contain the required save and less-destructive cloud or individual-USB options are unavailable. A complete restore affects the whole console, not just Mass Effect.

PlayStation’s official warning says: When restoring data, your PS5 console will erase all data saved on your console.
The same principle applies to documented full-console PS4 and PS5 backup restoration. Inventory current games, saves, screenshots and settings first, and copy anything newer that you cannot lose. If an individual cloud download or PS4-save USB copy exists, prefer it over a full restore.
PlayStation states a service capacity of up to 100 GB of PS4 saved data and 100 GB of PS5 saved data (2026 verification; page publication year not stated). That is a storage limit for the service, not a Mass Effect save-size or recovery-success figure.
What can Xbox players do?
Legendary Edition is available on Xbox One, but a current, readable official Xbox recovery menu sequence was not established for this guide. Sign in with the Xbox account that created the save and consult Xbox Support for account-specific cloud-data guidance.

How can I prevent losing Mass Effect saves again?
