Play Mass Effect, then Mass Effect 2, then Mass Effect 3, carrying Shepard’s decisions into each sequel. For the simplest first playthrough, use Mass Effect Legendary Edition for the trilogy and its included add-ons, then treat Mass Effect: Andromeda as a separate optional game. The only notable trilogy DLC omission is Pinnacle Station, which is absent from Legendary Edition.
The DLC does not have one publisher-mandated chronological sequence. The order below is a spoiler-conscious itinerary based on when each expansion fits most naturally, with community recommendations clearly separated from officially documented edition information.

The recommended order is Mass Effect → Mass Effect 2 → Mass Effect 3. Import your save or use the available choice-import tools so major decisions carry forward. This is the intended connected Shepard trilogy that Electronic Arts describes in its Legendary Edition materials.
| Game | Play it | Recommended DLC placement | Why it belongs there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mass Effect | First | Bring Down the Sky during the campaign; Pinnacle Station only in the original release | Introduces Shepard, the Normandy and the setting |
| Mass Effect 2 | Second | Early/middle add-ons during recruitment and missions; Lair of the Shadow Broker late; Arrival last | Builds the squad and sets up the third game |
| Mass Effect 3 | Third | From Ashes early; Omega and Leviathan before the endgame; Citadel late | Resolves the trilogy’s war story |
| Mass Effect: Andromeda | Optional, after the trilogy | No single-player story expansion follows its final update | Follows a different Pathfinder-led adventure |
The sequence is a recommended play order, not a claim that every event in the franchise can be placed on one definitive calendar timeline. DLC availability, unlocks and the order in which you complete optional assignments can vary with your campaign progress.

Which edition should I use?
Mass Effect Legendary Edition is the most convenient starting point. EA says it contains the three single-player base games and more than 40 DLC packs, and lists support for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC through the EA app or Steam. It puts the Shepard trilogy in one package, so you do not have to track down every add-on separately before starting.
“More than 40 DLC packs” is EA’s inclusion count, not an independently audited inventory. Legendary Edition is not absolutely complete: an identified EA community manager confirmed that Pinnacle Station is not included. EA’s classic-games help documentation discusses that add-on for the original Mass Effect.
What Legendary Edition changes
- The trilogy is presented as one connected purchase rather than three separate games.
- Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 include the major story expansions and most equipment content associated with the original releases.
- The ending uses the Extended Cut version by default; you do not launch it as a separate epilogue.
- Galactic readiness no longer depends on the former multiplayer requirement or companion application.
- Old weapons and armor are distributed through progression, research and merchants instead of necessarily appearing as a single bundle at the start.
That last point matters if you are comparing an old checklist with the remaster. A weapon or armor item can be present in Legendary Edition without appearing as a special mission or as an immediate inventory grant. Do not delay the story while trying to locate every cosmetic item in a fictional order; use normal vendors, research and campaign progression.
Original releases versus the remaster
If you buy an original release, check the exact edition and platform listing. EA’s help pages list classic DLC separately, while the current store listing called Mass Effect 2 (2010 Edition) includes previously released DLC and displays a 2023 storefront date. That listing date is not the original game’s release date, and a physical disc should not be assumed to contain every add-on without verification.
The practical choice is therefore straightforward: use Legendary Edition when you want the least complicated trilogy purchase, or use an original release only when you specifically want access to content such as Pinnacle Station or have a platform requirement. EA’s platform list confirms PS4, Xbox One and PC distribution for Legendary Edition, but it does not establish the condition, stock or physical format of any particular retail listing. Check those details on the actual offer before buying.
How should I play the first Mass Effect with DLC?
Play the main Mass Effect campaign and add Bring Down the Sky before finishing the game. Its precise position is flexible, so use it once you are comfortable with the campaign and before moving to Mass Effect 2. You can treat it as another assignment in Shepard’s tour rather than stopping the campaign for a separate “DLC chapter.”

Bring Down the Sky
Bring Down the Sky is the first game’s story expansion. It works as an optional mission arc during the main campaign; there is no need to force it into a specific mission slot. Completing it before the finale lets the first game’s events sit naturally alongside Shepard’s other assignments. If you are replaying, moving it earlier or later within the campaign is reasonable as long as it is complete before you begin the sequel.

Pinnacle Station
Pinnacle Station is available only if you are playing the original version of Mass Effect. It is absent from Legendary Edition because of the remaster’s technical and licensing history, according to an EA community manager. Original-release players can treat it as optional combat and challenge content; Legendary Edition players should simply omit it.
You do not need to purchase an older copy solely to follow the trilogy order. The core story and the other major DLC remain playable in Legendary Edition. If you do choose an original edition, verify whether the listing includes the add-on rather than assuming that a disc, code or “complete” label includes every classic pack.
When should I play Mass Effect 2 DLC?
Play the first group of Mass Effect 2 add-ons during recruitment and the middle of the campaign, then leave Lair of the Shadow Broker for late and Arrival for last, immediately before starting Mass Effect 3. This keeps optional missions from overwhelming the opening recruitment rhythm while preserving the two expansions that work best as late-game bridges.

Early and middle campaign additions
Fit these missions around recruitment and the main campaign instead of treating them as a separate mini-game:
- Normandy Crash Site: a short return to the wrecked original Normandy.
- Zaeed – The Price of Revenge: recruit Zaeed and undertake his loyalty-related mission when it becomes available.
- Kasumi – Stolen Memory: recruit Kasumi and complete her heist during the middle portion of the game.
- Firewalker: vehicle-focused missions that can be played between regular assignments.
- Overlord: a larger mission arc best experienced once Shepard has a developed team, but before the final sequence.
You do not have to complete these five packs in the exact order listed. A useful rule is to play recruitment content when the relevant character joins, use Firewalker as a break between assignments, and reserve Overlord for a point when the squad and Normandy systems are established. The goal is a smooth campaign, not a hidden mandatory chronology.
These placements are practical recommendations for pacing and spoiler control. EA confirms the DLC identities, but does not publish a required mission-by-mission chronology for them. If a mission is available earlier or later in your save, that flexibility is expected.
Lair of the Shadow Broker
Play Lair of the Shadow Broker late in Mass Effect 2 or after the main finale. Leaving it until Shepard has completed much of the recruitment and loyalty work gives the expansion more context without forcing a particular outcome for every character. It is especially well suited to a late campaign because it feels like a substantial payoff rather than an interruption to the opening squad-building phase.

Arrival
Save Arrival for the end of your Mass Effect 2 run, immediately before launching Mass Effect 3. Its position makes it a natural bridge into the third game. The timing is a story-flow recommendation rather than an enforced trigger: the game permits flexibility, but playing it last avoids interrupting the main recruitment arc and gives you a clean handoff into the sequel.
What about Genesis?
Mass Effect: Genesis is an optional interactive comic built into Legendary Edition before Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3. It lets someone beginning with a later game establish important prior choices. Genesis is a fallback for players who skip an earlier game, not a replacement for playing the full trilogy for the first time. If you use it, make your choices deliberately; it establishes a starting state, but it cannot provide all the character context, exploration and relationship history of the earlier campaign.
When should I play Mass Effect 3 DLC?
Start From Ashes relatively early, complete Omega and Leviathan before the endgame, and reserve Citadel for a late-game farewell before Priority: Cerberus Headquarters. Unlike equipment packs, these are story-facing expansions, so their placement affects pacing and the amount of campaign context you have when you meet their characters and locations.
From Ashes
Play From Ashes early in Mass Effect 3. An EA-hosted player discussion recommends it as the first DLC to start, but that is community guidance rather than an official mandatory sequence. Beginning early gives its character and historical context more time to inform the campaign. You can start it once it becomes available without waiting for the middle or late game.
Omega
Complete Omega during the middle or later part of the campaign, before the endgame missions. Its relative position against Leviathan is flexible; choose based on whether you prefer a larger action detour or a lore-focused investigation at that point in the story. Do not begin either expansion after you have committed to the final run, because the itinerary is designed to leave both finished before the ending sequence.
Leviathan
Finish Leviathan before the endgame. You can play it before or after Omega. Players who want to delay its major revelations can leave it until later, provided they do not begin the final run first. Its position is therefore a preference choice: earlier for additional context, later for a more concentrated late-campaign revelation.
Citadel
Save Citadel for late in the campaign and finish its activities before Priority: Cerberus Headquarters. An EA-hosted support discussion identifies Priority: The Citadel II as the point after which the expansion opens and Priority: Cerberus Headquarters as the later cutoff.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Waiting gives you more opportunity to establish companions and encounter additional guests, but the exact roster depends on your choices and progress. No single guest list is guaranteed for every save. Treat the cutoff as forum guidance about practical timing, not as a studio-issued chronology. Once the expansion is open, complete its activities before starting the cutoff mission if you want the broadest opportunity to see its farewell material.
Extended Cut
Legendary Edition already uses the Extended Cut finale. There is no separate mission to schedule after the ending; complete the campaign normally and the revised ending presentation is part of that edition. You also do not need multiplayer or the former companion application to satisfy Legendary Edition’s galactic-readiness system.
Where does Mass Effect: Andromeda fit?
Play Mass Effect: Andromeda after the Shepard trilogy if you want another game, but do not insert it between the trilogy’s three chapters. EA presents it as a distinct Pathfinder-led adventure rather than the continuation of Shepard’s carried-forward decisions. Starting it after Mass Effect 3 makes the change in protagonist, setting and story structure clear.
Andromeda has multiplayer microcontent listed in EA’s store, but that is not a missing single-player chapter. In a BioWare studio statement dated August 19, 2017, the team wrote: “Our last update, 1.10, was the final update for Mass Effect: Andromeda.” The same statement said no further single-player or in-game story content was planned. Therefore, there is no official Andromeda story DLC chapter to add to this itinerary.
That does not make multiplayer items part of the trilogy order. Treat them as optional online content, not as missions required to complete the Pathfinder campaign. Likewise, merchandise such as collectibles, apparel or a vinyl release is optional fan material, not a prerequisite for any game or expansion.

- Do not call Legendary Edition complete without qualification. It includes the trilogy and more than 40 DLC packs, but not Pinnacle Station.
- Do not schedule every weapon or armor pack as a mission. Legendary Edition distributes equipment through normal progression, research and merchants.
- Do not treat Genesis as a full-game substitute. It is an optional choice-setting comic for players starting with a sequel.
- Do not assume an old disc contains every add-on. Verify the named edition and platform before buying an original release.
- Do not confuse storefront dates with original release dates. A current listing’s displayed year can describe that edition or listing, not the game’s historical launch.
- Do not mistake Andromeda multiplayer items for story expansion. BioWare’s final-update statement concerns the absence of further single-player or in-game story content.
- Do not assume a platform listing proves physical availability. EA’s PS4, Xbox One and PC support information does not verify whether a particular retailer offer is a disc, a code, in stock or in a specific condition.
- Do not invent a fixed chronology. The late placement of Arrival, Leviathan and Citadel is practical story-flow advice, not a mandatory sequence published for every save.
What is the safest first-playthrough itinerary?
- Install Mass Effect Legendary Edition on PS4, Xbox One or PC through the EA app or Steam.
- Play Mass Effect, including Bring Down the Sky; omit Pinnacle Station unless you are using the original release.
- Import your choices into Mass Effect 2. Play Normandy Crash Site, Zaeed, Kasumi, Firewalker and Overlord as they become convenient during recruitment and the central campaign.
- Complete Lair of the Shadow Broker late, then play Arrival as the final Mass Effect 2 story expansion.
- Import the resulting decisions into Mass Effect 3. Start From Ashes early.
- Play Omega and Leviathan before the endgame, in either order.
- After Priority: The Citadel II unlocks Citadel, postpone it until late and finish it before Priority: Cerberus Headquarters.
- Finish Mass Effect 3 with the built-in Extended Cut finale.
- Only then start Mass Effect: Andromeda, if you want a separate Pathfinder story.
How we chose this order
The sequence prioritizes continuous Shepard story progression, preservation of imported choices, spoiler-conscious pacing and the practical cutoff for Citadel. Official EA pages establish the games and DLC identities, platform support and Legendary Edition contents; EA-hosted player discussions provide the flexible placement advice for several expansions. Where the sources do not establish an exact chronology, this guide labels the placement as a recommendation rather than a required order.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I start with Mass Effect 2 without playing the first game?
Yes. Legendary Edition includes the optional Genesis comic, which lets a new player establish key prior choices before starting Mass Effect 2. You will still miss some character and world context that comes from playing the first campaign, so the full trilogy remains the better first-time route.

Does Legendary Edition include all the Mass Effect DLC?
It includes the three single-player games and more than 40 DLC packs, according to EA, but it does not include Pinnacle Station. Equipment content is distributed through progression, research and merchants, so not every item appears as an immediate downloadable bundle.
Is Pinnacle Station available on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One in Legendary Edition?
No. Pinnacle Station is not included in Legendary Edition on those platforms or on PC. It is associated with the original Mass Effect release, so its absence does not block the trilogy itinerary.

Play Arrival last among the Mass Effect 2 story expansions, immediately before Mass Effect 3. That is a spoiler-conscious story-flow recommendation, not a mandatory trigger enforced by the game.
When should I play Citadel?
Citadel opens after Priority: The Citadel II. Save it for late in Mass Effect 3 and finish its activities before Priority: Cerberus Headquarters. The exact guest roster depends on your choices and campaign progress.
Does Mass Effect 3 require multiplayer to reach its ending?
No. Legendary Edition removes the former multiplayer and companion-app dependency for galactic readiness. The single-player campaign and its built-in Extended Cut finale are sufficient for the edition’s ending system.
Should Omega or Leviathan come first?
Either order works. Complete both before the endgame; choose Omega first for its action-focused detour or delay Leviathan if you prefer to reserve its major revelations for later.
Can I buy a physical PS4 copy and assume it has every DLC pack?
No. EA verifies PS4 support for Legendary Edition, but a platform listing does not prove that a particular offer is physical, in stock or complete. Check the retailer’s exact edition and contents.
Should I play Andromeda before or after Mass Effect 3?
Play it after the trilogy if you want the cleanest narrative progression. It follows a different Pathfinder-led adventure and does not import Shepard’s trilogy decisions as the next chapter.
Does Andromeda have a story DLC chapter I need to play?
No official single-player story chapter follows its final update. BioWare’s August 19, 2017 statement said update 1.10 was the final update and that no further single-player or in-game story content was planned. Multiplayer microcontent is separate.
The Bottom Line
For a first playthrough, use Mass Effect Legendary Edition and play Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 in that order, carrying choices forward. Add the story DLC where it fits above, omit Pinnacle Station unless you use the original release, and treat Andromeda as an optional separate adventure after the trilogy.
