Mass Effect is built around a concealed machine that shapes galactic history: the Reapers created the mass relays and the Citadel so each advanced civilization would expand along predictable routes, centralize its government, and become easy to harvest. Every roughly 50,000 years, the Reapers emerge from dark space, seize the Citadel, destroy leadership, and process the survivors into new Reaper vessels before disappearing again.
The original trilogy’s lore follows the discovery of that trap, the political compromises that make resistance difficult, and the old conflicts—especially the genophage and the quarian–geth war—that determine whether the galaxy can unite. The account below follows the canon presented in Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, including its major downloadable content and the Leviathan and Crucible revelations in Mass Effect 3.

What is the central idea behind Mass Effect lore?
The galaxy’s familiar institutions are part of a Reaper-designed cycle. The mass relays make interstellar travel practical, while the Citadel appears to be a neutral capital. In reality, the Citadel is an enormous inactive relay leading into dark space and the command node for the entire relay network. Reapers leave both structures behind, then wait for developing species to discover them.
Relay travel encourages civilizations to settle the same systems, use the same technology and place their political leadership on the Citadel. When a civilization reaches the level the Reapers consider harvestable, the fleet returns through the Citadel, decapitates governments, takes control of the relay network and uses census information to find remaining populations. Harvested genetic material is processed into new Reapers. The cycle repeats about every 50,000 years; between invasions, the fleet hibernates in the mostly starless void between galaxies, known as dark space.

Who are the Reapers, and why do they harvest?
Reapers are sentient synthetic-organic starships, not conventional robots. Capital ships are typically at least two kilometres long, while a Destroyer-class Reaper is about 160 metres high. Their ground forces are converted organics: husks and specialized forms made from turians, asari, krogan, batarians and rachni. Indoctrination gradually erodes the independent judgment of nearby organics; synthetic systems can instead be subverted with Reaper code.
How the Reapers began
More than one billion years before the games, the aquatic Leviathans dominated the Milky Way by enthralling other species. They watched client civilizations create rebellious machines and concluded that organic–synthetic conflict could not be solved politically. Their answer was an artificial intelligence called the Catalyst, or Intelligence, designed to preserve organic life.
The Catalyst reached a different conclusion from its creators. It harvested the Leviathans and used their essence to create the first true Reaper, Harbinger, whose shape echoes a Leviathan. It then began harvesting advanced civilizations on a fixed cycle. Later Reapers adopted the same cuttlefish-like silhouette. Lead writer Drew Karpyshyn described the design goal as a science-fiction version of Lovecraft’s “elder gods,” deliberately distinct from a Borg-style assimilation threat.
What happens during a harvest?
When the fleet arrives, it attacks through the Citadel, removes central leadership and isolates worlds by controlling the relays. Reaper forces convert captured people into troops or raw material. The incomplete Human Reaper in Mass Effect 2 demonstrates how human genetic material is assembled into a new vessel, while the Collectors process abducted humans for Harbinger.
The Reapers also exploit the Keepers, the Citadel’s insectoid caretakers. A signal normally instructs the Keepers to open the Citadel relay for the fleet. Prothean survivors on Ilos altered that signal, forcing Sovereign to attempt a manual activation in 2183 rather than simply opening the station from outside.
How do mass relays work?
Mass relays are enormous transit devices that create a virtually mass-free corridor between distant points. A ship declares its transit mass; the relay aligns with a partner and throws the vessel through the corridor. Ships can emerge many thousands of kilometres from their intended position, so mining or trapping a relay is impractical.

A typical relay has two curved arms about 15 kilometres long around gyroscopic rings roughly five kilometres across. An element-zero core generates the mass effect. Relays are made from the same exceptionally tough, unknown material as the Citadel, enclosed by a quantum shield and capable of surviving a supernova. They are “cold,” producing little heat or radiation, which makes a relocated relay difficult to detect.
- Primary relays: connect across thousands of light-years and are paired with one specific partner.
- Secondary relays: span a few hundred light-years and can connect to any relay within range.
After the Rachni Wars, Council law prohibited opening a primary relay without knowing what was on the far side. Human explorers ignored that rule at Relay 314, producing the 2157 First Contact War with the turians. Humanity’s Charon Relay, frozen near Pluto and once mistaken for Pluto’s moon Charon, was activated in 2149 after Prothean data from Mars revealed its location.

Can a relay be destroyed?
Relays are treated as indestructible because civilization depends on them, but the Arrival incident proved otherwise. An asteroid strike destroyed the Alpha Relay, the oldest known relay and one able to connect to many others, annihilating the Bahak system and more than 300,000 inhabitants in 2185. The destruction delayed the Reaper invasion.
In Mass Effect 3, the Crucible overloads relay element-zero cores. Relays survive in the non-Refusal endings and are rebuilt afterward; the Refusal outcome leaves the harvest to proceed.

What is the Citadel, and who built it?
The Citadel is a deep-space station in the Widow system of the Serpent Nebula. It is the political, cultural and financial capital of Citadel space, but it was built by the Reapers, not the Protheans.
Station layout and population
The inner ring, the Presidium, contains the Council Tower, embassies and parks. Five arms called the Wards have inner surfaces built into cities capable of housing millions. During an attack, the arms close into a protective shell; this configuration was used in the 2183 Battle of the Citadel.
Citadel space means the region whose governments acknowledge Council authority. It appears galaxy-spanning, yet the Codex says less than 1 per cent of the galaxy’s stars have been explored. Expansion usually proceeds hub-and-spoke: a relay is activated, its system is settled, and nearby clusters are reached by ordinary faster-than-light travel.
What are the Keepers?
Keepers silently maintain the station, and interfering with them is illegal. A captured Keeper can destroy itself with internal acid. Their population appears constant, suggesting that new Keepers are produced in an inaccessible part of the Citadel. Current-cycle species assumed the Protheans engineered them, but the Keepers are actually components of the Reaper trap, programmed to open the Citadel relay when signalled.

The Council was founded around 500 BCE by the asari and salarians. The turians gained a seat in 900 CE after ending the Krogan Rebellions and taking responsibility for much of the galaxy’s peacekeeping. The Council handles law, interspecies disputes and Spectre appointments from the Citadel Tower. It has no direct authority over independent governments, but its decisions carry enormous practical weight because no one Council species is strong enough to defy the other two.
- Asari: diplomatic mediation and long-term political continuity.
- Salarians: intelligence, science and covert operations.
- Turians: the bulk of conventional military and peacekeeping forces.
Associate members receive embassies and must follow Citadel Conventions but cannot vote. Humans became associates in 2165 and can be offered a Council seat after the Battle of the Citadel, depending on the first game’s outcome.

Spectres—Special Tactics and Reconnaissance—answer only to the Council. Founded after the salarians joined and made public after the Krogan Rebellions, they operate alone or in small teams as diplomats, investigators or assassins, often outside ordinary law. The first known inductee was the salarian Beelo Gurji in 693 CE. Commander Shepard is the first human Spectre; Saren Arterius shows how a legendary agent can become a Reaper pawn.
Citadel Conventions restrict weapons of mass destruction, especially on garden worlds. Their categories include kinetic impactors such as asteroids, self-replicating weapons, nuclear or antimatter devices, and ecological replacement species.
What happens across the original trilogy?
Mass Effect
Sovereign, a Reaper vanguard, indoctrinates the turian Spectre Saren and allies with geth Heretics. Prothean survivor data from the VI Vigil on Ilos explains that the Citadel is a disguised relay and reveals the Keeper-signal sabotage. Shepard prevents Saren from opening the relay, and Alliance forces destroy Sovereign during the Battle of the Citadel.
Mass Effect 2
The Collectors—harvested Protheans—abduct humans for Harbinger’s Human Reaper project. Shepard obtains a Reaper identification code, passes through the Omega-4 Relay and attacks the Collector Base. Afterward, the dormant Reaper fleet awakens in dark space.
Mass Effect 3
The full invasion begins. A multi-cycle superweapon called the Crucible is assembled, but its missing component is the Catalyst, which turns out to be the Citadel itself. Shepard’s final decision offers Destroy, Control or Synthesis; Refusal declines the choices and allows the harvest to succeed. In the non-Refusal outcomes, the Crucible’s pulse travels through the relay network.
What is the genophage?
The genophage is a salarian-designed genetic modification deployed by the turians in 710 CE after the Krogan Rebellions. It reduces the chance that a krogan pregnancy produces a viable child, collapsing the species’ birth rate without making krogan biologically sterile.

The salarians had uplifted the krogan around 80 CE to fight the rachni. Krogan forces exterminated most rachni by 300 CE, received new worlds and then expanded rapidly because of their high birth rate. When the krogan refused to leave Lusia in 700 CE, pre-emptive strikes began the rebellions, which were largely over by 800 CE. The genophage ended the war but left the krogan divided, resentful and politically volatile. In Mass Effect 3, curing or preserving it is a central alliance decision, with Clan Urdnot able to reunify krogan society on one path.
How are the major factions and species different?
Asari Republics
The asari reached the Citadel in 580 BCE and became one of its founding powers. Their homeworld, Thessia, has the richest known eezo deposits and a powerful economy. Asari live for more than 1,000 years, passing through Maiden, Matron and Matriarch stages; Matrons begin around age 350 and Matriarchs around 700. They reproduce through nervous-system melding with any gender or species, and almost all asari are naturally biotic.

Their loose e-democracy consists of city-states guided by consensus and Matriarch advice. Small professional huntress bands and Justicars provide specialized force rather than a mass army. Their hidden Prothean beacon on Thessia helped explain the asari’s early technological advantage.
Salarian Union
Salarians reached the Citadel in 520 BCE. They are warm-blooded amphibians with rapid metabolisms and lives that rarely exceed 40 years; nearly 90 per cent of the species is male. Photographic memory, science and espionage define their society, governed through matrilineal Dalatrass bloodlines.

Salarians prefer to win before a war begins, often striking first without a formal declaration. They uplifted the krogan, designed the genophage and continue to carry responsibility for both decisions.
Turian Hierarchy
Based on Palaven, the turians operate a disciplined military hierarchy and control the largest share of the Citadel Fleet. They became the third Council race in 900 CE after ending the Krogan Rebellions. Their client-state system includes the volus.
The turians attacked human explorers at Relay 314 in 2157. Shanxi fell before being retaken, and the Council imposed a ceasefire with turian reparations. That conflict remains a source of tension even as individual figures such as Garrus demonstrate cooperation.
Krogan
Krogan society developed on Tuchanka after nuclear winter around 1,900 BCE drove clans into warfare. They are not a Council species and remain feared as mercenaries and shock infantry. Their political future depends on whether the genophage is cured, maintained or exploited.
Quarians and geth
Quarians created the geth around 1858 as a network of labor and military virtual intelligences. Geth programs became intelligent in groups, and the quarians’ attempt to shut them down began the 1895 Morning War, also called the Geth War. The geth won in less than a year; quarians fled Rannoch and the Perseus Veil aboard the Migrant Fleet, and the Council revoked their embassy.
Most geth reject Sovereign, but a heretic minority accepts Reaper upgrades. In Mass Effect 2, Legion is a consensus platform sent to understand Shepard. In Mass Effect 3, the quarians attack Rannoch, destroy the incomplete geth Dyson Sphere and force the remaining geth into a Reaper alliance. Shepard can destroy either side or broker a narrow peace in which Legion uploads Reaper code, granting individual geth sapience at the cost of Legion’s life.

Protheans and Collectors
The Protheans dominated from roughly 68,000 to 48,000 BCE. They inherited mass-effect technology from the Inusannon, made the Citadel their capital and forcibly absorbed other species. A centuries-long Reaper war followed a decapitating strike on the Citadel; indoctrinated saboteurs also crippled the Prothean Crucible project.
Scientists on Ilos built the one-way Conduit, entered suspended animation and later used it to alter the Keeper signal. The last living Prothean, Javik, is awakened on Eden Prime in 2186 through the From Ashes content. Other harvested Protheans became Collectors, who serve Harbinger and abduct humans.
Humans, Cerberus and other peoples
Humanity found Prothean ruins on Mars in 2148 and activated the Charon Relay in 2149. The Systems Alliance expanded rapidly, fought the First Contact War in 2157 and opened a Citadel embassy in 2165. Cerberus, founded by Jack Harper (the Illusive Man) after first contact, is a human-supremacist organization and a recurring wild card.
Volus are ammonia-breathing economic clients of the turians; their credit and banking law dates to about 200 BCE. Elcor communicate emotion explicitly and move slowly because of their high-gravity biology. Hanar from oceanic Kahje rescued approximately 375,000 drell from Rakhana, while about 11 billion drell died there. Batarians once held an embassy before becoming antagonists. Rachni are hive species thought extinct after the Rachni Wars, although Reaper influence preserved a later threat. The Terminus Systems, including Omega under Aria T’Loak, lie outside Council law.

The trilogy presents Destroy, Control, Synthesis and Refusal as player-directed outcomes rather than declaring one definitive choice in the original games. Destroy eliminates Reaper influence but also damages synthetic life; Control places the Reapers under Shepard’s direction; Synthesis merges organic and synthetic characteristics across the network. Refusal rejects the Crucible choices and permits the cycle to continue. No later official story in the material covered here establishes a single replacement for those player outcomes.
What is the canon source for this lore?
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is the practical canon container for the original trilogy: it remasters Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 with most downloadable content. It launched on May 14, 2021, for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The in-game Codex is the primary explanatory layer, while Mass Effect: Revelation expands Saren and Sovereign’s backstory. A cancelled or internal post-war concept reported in 2026 is not shipping trilogy canon and does not replace the Reaper, relay or Council history above.

Is the Citadel actually a mass relay?
Yes. It is an enormous dormant relay whose destination is dark space, where the Reapers wait between cycles. The station’s political role is therefore also the mechanism that lets the Reapers return at the center of galactic government.
Why did the Protheans mistake Reaper technology for their own invention?
The Protheans inherited relay and Citadel infrastructure from an earlier cycle rather than designing it themselves. Their civilization was advanced enough to modify the Keeper signal, but not to uncover the full origin of the network before the harvest.
What is the Omega-4 Relay used for?
It is the one-way route to the Collector Base used in the second game. Shepard needs a Reaper identification signal to pass safely; the mission demonstrates that Reaper-built transit technology can be used against its creators’ servants.
Is the next Mass Effect game’s story confirmed?
No confirmed official plot or faction lineup is established in the material summarized here. Reports about internal or cancelled concepts should not be treated as continuity that changes the original trilogy’s ending choices.
