Short answer: Mass Effect Legendary Edition did not replace the trilogy with a newly composed soundtrack. BioWare said the games’ audio was “remixed and enhanced across all games,” but its published statements do not document a track-by-track remaster, universal rerecording, or replacement of every music file. The clearest new music item is Resynthesis, the cue used by the collection’s game-selection launcher. Composer Sam Hulick said he remixed and remastered an older, previously unused piece for that purpose. The soundtrack download and vinyl box are separate curated releases, so their track lists cannot be used as inventories of everything that plays in the games.
What actually changed in Mass Effect Legendary Edition’s in-game music?
The practical change is an updated audio presentation, not a new trilogy score. In BioWare’s April 6, 2021 development explanation, community manager Jay Ingram wrote that “Audio is remixed and enhanced across all games.” That is the strongest trilogy-wide statement in BioWare’s published explanation, and it should be read narrowly: it confirms work on the games’ audio, but it does not identify which individual cues were remixed, what source files were used, or whether every track received identical treatment. BioWare’s PlayStation Blog explanation also frames Legendary Edition as modernization rather than a remake or reimagining.

That distinction matters because “remastered soundtrack” can mean several different things. It might refer to a new master of an existing recording, a new mix, a higher-quality game asset, a rerecording by musicians, or simply a better-balanced audio mix in the game engine. The available official wording confirms enhancement and remixing at the audio level, but it does not establish a universal rerecording, a measured bitrate change, a dynamic-range result, or a file-by-file replacement list.
Players should therefore expect the original musical identity of Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 to remain intact while the remastered games present their audio in a modernized package. A claim that “every song was remastered” goes beyond what BioWare documented. Conversely, saying that “nothing changed” is also inaccurate because BioWare explicitly reported audio remixing and enhancement and added a new launcher cue.

Is Resynthesis a brand-new Mass Effect song?
Resynthesis is new to Legendary Edition as a released placement, but it was not necessarily composed from scratch for the 2021 collection. It plays on the unified launcher where you choose among the three games, a front end that did not exist in the original releases.
In an interview with We Are Mass Effect, composer Sam Hulick explained that BioWare contacted him about an older unused piece whose rights he owned. He remixed and remastered it for the launcher, describing the opportunity as a chance to “breathe new life into that track.” The evidence supports three precise conclusions:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- The unified Legendary Edition launcher has a cue that the separate original game releases did not use in that front-end role.
- Hulick says the cue came from an earlier, unused composition and was remixed and remastered for this edition.
- Resynthesis is a specific, documented treatment; it is not proof that every trilogy cue received the same process.
This is why descriptions of Resynthesis should use “new to this edition” rather than “newly composed for Legendary Edition.” It is a new release and placement for players, while its underlying composition predates the project.
How do the original albums, the EA bonus download and the vinyl set differ?
They are different products with different purposes. The music heard during gameplay, a promotional digital download and a physical compilation are not interchangeable, even when they share recordings or titles.
| Release or format | What it represents | Documented details | What you should not infer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original game audio | The music and sound mix shipped with each separate game | The three original releases carry their own scores and mixes; Legendary Edition reports audio remixing and enhancement | Do not infer a universal cue-by-cue remaster, replacement mix or removal from gameplay without a source |
| Original soundtrack releases | Standalone albums tied to the earlier games | The first game has a documented 2007 soundtrack CD; EA announced digital availability for a Mass Effect 2 score on January 19, 2010 | An album track list is not a complete inventory of game files |
| EA promotional digital download | A curated bonus soundtrack associated with Legendary Edition | EA listed 88 tracks from the three games plus Resynthesis and expressly excluded the Faunts tracks | Do not treat the list as proof that excluded songs vanished from the games |
| SpaceLab9 four-LP collection | A separately produced physical compilation | The manufacturer announced 85 tracks across four LPs, including Resynthesis and some previously unreleased in-game music | It is not an LP pressing of EA’s digital bonus download |
EA’s community announcement is the source for the 88-track description and the Faunts omission. It does not present a technical comparison of every original and remastered audio asset. Likewise, SpaceLab9’s announcement supplies the 85-track vinyl selection, but that selection follows the constraints and editorial choices of a four-record set.
Were the Faunts songs removed from the games?
No. EA’s announcement says the Faunts tracks were excluded from the specified promotional soundtrack download. That is a statement about a downloadable album list, not a statement that the songs were deleted from the games, their credits or their licenses.

The distinction is easy to lose because a player may compare the download with an older album and see songs missing. A soundtrack download can omit licensed songs for rights, curation, runtime or packaging reasons while the game still contains them. No published source authenticates the complete credit sequence or every in-game music file in each Legendary Edition title, so it would be wrong to claim that a particular Faunts song definitely plays—or definitely does not play—in a given remastered game based only on the download list.
Use careful wording: “Faunts tracks were omitted from EA’s listed bonus download.” Avoid “Legendary Edition removed the Faunts songs” unless a source specifically documents an in-game change. The difference protects readers from confusing a commercial album’s scope with the game’s audio content.
What were the original soundtrack releases?
The original era produced several soundtrack artifacts rather than one definitive trilogy album. The first Mass Effect has a documented 2007 soundtrack CD. For Mass Effect 2, an Electronic Arts announcement dated January 19, 2010 described digital-score availability. Those releases were tied to their respective games and should be compared as historical albums, not assumed to contain every cue heard while playing.
That historical context explains why collectors can encounter different track counts and song selections even before Legendary Edition. Album licensing, disc capacity, bonus tracks and publisher decisions all shape a commercial soundtrack. The same principle applies to the later EA download and the vinyl set: each is a release with its own scope.

Legendary Edition itself launched on May 14, 2021 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, bringing the three games together in one package. The collection’s launcher created a natural place for Resynthesis, while the games retained their individual musical identities. The launch date and platforms come from EA’s contemporary announcement; they do not imply that every soundtrack format shipped on those platforms.
Is the Mass Effect Trilogy vinyl the same as the Legendary Edition soundtrack?
No. The SpaceLab9 Mass Effect Trilogy Vinyl Collection 4LP soundtrack is a separate physical compilation, announced before Legendary Edition launched. Its manufacturer lists 85 tracks across four LPs. The set includes Resynthesis and some music described as previously unreleased in-game material, but its selection is not the same thing as EA’s 88-track promotional download.

The differences are important for buyers:
- Track count: SpaceLab9 documents 85 vinyl tracks, while EA describes 88 tracks from the games plus Resynthesis for its digital bonus release. Those figures belong to different products and should not be reconciled as if they were versions of one master list.
- Format: Four LPs impose side lengths, sequencing and physical manufacturing limits. A digital download can use a different running order and capacity.
- Selection: The vinyl announcement identifies some previously unreleased in-game music and includes Resynthesis; it does not claim to reproduce EA’s download exactly.
- Release history: SpaceLab9 announced the set in 2020, before the game collection’s May 2021 release. It is therefore not simply a pressed copy of a later promotional download.
For the manufacturer’s track list, consult SpaceLab9’s published announcement. The official BioWare Gear Store page for the Omni-Blade variant is another useful product reference, but its current listing says the item is out of stock. Availability can change, so a listing should not be read as a promise that new copies are obtainable.
Does a missing song on an album prove it is missing in Legendary Edition?
No. An album is a curated listening product; the game is an interactive software release with music attached to scenes, menus, credits and downloadable content. A song can be absent from a bonus album while remaining in the game, and an album can contain a version or cue that is not used in ordinary gameplay.
When checking a disputed track, identify the exact object being discussed first:
- Gameplay audio: music files and mixes packaged with one of the three remastered games.
- Credits and menus: music attached to end credits, title screens or the unified launcher.
- EA’s promotional download: the 2021 bonus selection described as 88 tracks plus Resynthesis, with Faunts tracks excluded.
- A physical album: an original CD, a historical digital score or the SpaceLab9 four-LP curation.
Only after identifying the object should you compare track lists. If the question is whether a song plays during a particular mission or credits sequence, an album listing cannot answer it by itself. No published file-by-file comparison establishes the status of every track, so definitive claims about individual in-game removals should be avoided.
What does “remixed and enhanced” tell you about sound quality?
It tells you that BioWare worked on the trilogy’s audio presentation, but not exactly how much each music cue changed. The phrase does not publish sample rates, bitrates, dynamic-range measurements, channel layouts, loudness targets or a list of replacement masters. BioWare’s published explanation supplies none of those technical figures.
That limitation is especially relevant to audiophile comparisons. It is reasonable to report BioWare’s statement and describe Legendary Edition as an audio-enhanced remaster. It is not reasonable to invent a bitrate improvement, claim a measured increase in dynamic range, or say that every cue was re-encoded from a particular source. If a future technical analysis documents those details, it would be a separate source-based finding rather than something established by the launch announcement.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The safest listener-facing summary is: the remastered games present the trilogy with audio changes BioWare characterizes as remixing and enhancement, while the musical compositions and overall score remain recognizably those of the original games. Resynthesis is the clearly identified addition to the collection’s front end.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you choose between the game, an original album and the vinyl?
Choose according to whether you want interactive context, historical album ownership or a curated physical display edition. None of these formats is a complete substitute for the others.
| Your goal | Most suitable format | Why | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hear music in missions, menus and credits | Legendary Edition on PC, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One | You hear the score in its game context and can access the unified launcher with Resynthesis | The collection’s audio enhancement is documented generally, not cue by cue |
| Own an original-era artifact | Mass Effect soundtrack CD or historical digital score release | These preserve the earlier album-release history, including the 2007 first-game CD and the 2010 Mass Effect 2 digital announcement | Album track lists do not represent every in-game cue |
| Collect a large physical trilogy set | SpaceLab9 four-LP collection | It contains 85 curated tracks, includes Resynthesis and adds some previously unreleased in-game music | It is separate from EA’s digital bonus download; current stock is not guaranteed |
| Find the 2021 promotional digital selection | EA’s bonus-download offer, if an official route still provides it | EA described 88 tracks from the games plus Resynthesis | The announced claim window was May 5–31, 2021 and was subject to download capacity |
For the game itself, the relevant physical product is a copy of Legendary Edition for one of its supported platforms—not a soundtrack disc. For collecting, verify the exact edition, pressing and condition before paying a premium, because a four-LP set, an original CD and a game package are different products with different contents.
Can you still download EA’s 2021 bonus soundtrack?
EA’s community-manager announcement specified a May 5–31, 2021 bonus-download window and conditioned fulfillment on download capacity. That is a historical promotion, not a current availability guarantee. A later general policy about game extras does not independently confirm that this particular soundtrack download remains active.
The contemporaneous link associated with the offer returned a 404, but that single result does not prove that every possible official route is gone. Do not rely on an old forum link as proof of present access, and be cautious with unofficial mirrors whose files, metadata or licensing status cannot be verified. If you already downloaded the files, preserve the original folder structure and metadata so you can distinguish EA’s promotional selection from other soundtrack releases.
What is the most accurate verdict on the soundtrack changes?
Legendary Edition is best described as a remastered collection with generally remixed and enhanced audio, not as a replacement soundtrack or a newly recorded trilogy score. The one clearly documented new musical placement is Resynthesis, an older unused Sam Hulick piece that he remixed and remastered for the unified launcher.

Everything else requires release-by-release precision. EA’s 88-track bonus download, the original soundtrack albums and SpaceLab9’s 85-track four-LP set are separate curated artifacts. The download’s exclusion of Faunts tracks does not, by itself, show that those songs were removed from gameplay. Without an authenticated file-by-file comparison, claims about universal remastering, specific missing cues or technical audio metrics remain unproven.
That framework lets you compare what you actually want: the remastered games for contextual listening, an original album for historical ownership, the vinyl for a curated physical collection, or the promotional download as a limited release artifact. Treating each as its own object is the key to understanding what changed—and what did not.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Resynthesis appear on the original Mass Effect soundtrack albums?
No original album listing cited here includes it. Hulick described it as an older unused piece that was remixed and remastered for the Legendary Edition launcher, so its release and placement belong to the later collection.
Are the 85 vinyl tracks and EA’s 88-track download the same songs?
They are separate curation decisions. SpaceLab9 documents 85 tracks across four LPs, while EA describes 88 tracks from the games plus Resynthesis; the different formats and announcements do not establish a one-to-one match.
Which platforms received Mass Effect Legendary Edition at launch?
EA announced the May 14, 2021 release for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The announcement does not make the soundtrack a separate platform product; the music is part of the game package.
Does the Faunts omission affect the game’s end credits?
EA’s published wording only says the Faunts tracks were excluded from its promotional download. It does not authenticate the credit music in each remastered game, so an album omission alone cannot answer the in-game-credit question.
