To improve Mass Effect Legendary Edition performance without needlessly degrading its remastered image, set a realistic frame-rate target first, then adjust resolution, Dynamic Shadows, and Ambient Occlusion in that order. Keep Antialiasing on if you can: the published test found its performance gain from turning it off was small, while the jagged edges were noticeable. Motion Blur and Film Grain are mainly matters of taste, not meaningful FPS fixes.

There is no single best preset for every PC. Resolution, graphics hardware, display refresh, and the scene being played all affect the trade-offs. The recommendations below combine EA’s documented graphics controls and system requirements with PC Gamer’s 2021 measurements; those measurements illustrate relative costs, not guaranteed results on a current PC.

What are the best Mass Effect Legendary Edition PC settings?

For a balanced starting point, use your display’s native resolution, choose a frame-rate cap your PC can maintain, and enable VSync if screen tearing bothers you. Leave Antialiasing, Ambient Occlusion, and Dynamic Shadows on initially. If performance falls short, lower resolution first; then try disabling Dynamic Shadows, followed by Ambient Occlusion. Turn off Antialiasing only if those changes are not enough and you accept a visibly rougher image.

This is a settings ladder, not an official EA preset. EA documents what the controls do and which options are available; the priority order is an editorial recommendation informed by PC Gamer’s published testing. It is designed to preserve the remaster’s image where possible while giving you clear, reversible adjustments to try.

How should I set a frame-rate target, VSync, and display mode?

Choose a frame-rate target that suits both your monitor and what your PC can sustain, rather than selecting the highest cap simply because it is available. EA lists caps of 30, 60, 120, 144, and 240 fps, with 240 fps as the documented default. For example, a 60 fps cap is a reasonable starting point for a 60 Hz display; 120 fps may suit a 120 Hz target if the system can maintain it. These are practical matching suggestions, not universal requirements.

VSync is a separate decision. EA says it can prevent screen tearing, but may introduce input lag; when it is enabled, the monitor’s refresh rate limits the maximum frame rate. If tearing is distracting, enable it and see whether the response still feels comfortable. If low input latency matters more and tearing is acceptable, try it off. A cap and VSync do not guarantee perfectly even frame pacing on every system, so assess whether play feels steady rather than chasing a peak number.

Start with Fullscreen for a conventional display presentation. Borderless is also supported and may be more convenient if you regularly switch to other windows. The available evidence does not establish either mode as a reliable FPS upgrade, so choose between them for workflow and presentation rather than assuming one is faster.

Which graphics settings should you lower first?

Make one change at a time, in the order below, and compare performance in a similar gameplay situation. A change that helps in one scene may not produce the same result everywhere. The table summarizes the trade-offs reported in EA’s controls documentation and PC Gamer’s 2021 measurements.

Setting or choice Likely performance value Visual or usability trade-off Suggested use
Resolution High-value broad adjustment, especially when targeting 4K Direct reduction in image detail and sharpness Lower one step only if the target is not sustainable
Dynamic Shadows Largest measured gain among the individual toggles in PC Gamer’s mid-range test Less character shadowing; the cited article described the visual difference as relatively limited compared with modern games Try off if the shortfall is modest and resolution matters to you
Ambient Occlusion Smaller but measurable gain in the cited test Less depth in corners, alcoves, and other occluded areas Try off after Dynamic Shadows if you still need headroom
Antialiasing Small gain in the cited test More jagged object edges Keep on unless the other compromises are insufficient
Motion Blur and Film Grain Little performance effect in the cited test Changes motion softness or film-like texture Set according to clarity and comfort, not as an FPS remedy
VSync and frame-rate cap Control tearing and the output target; not a substitute for reducing rendering load VSync may add input lag; a lower cap limits maximum output Match the cap to a practical display target and enable VSync if tearing is bothersome

Why start with resolution?

Resolution determines how many pixels the game renders, so it is a broad performance lever with a correspondingly visible image-quality cost. PC Gamer’s 2021 analysis found resolution more practically important than the game’s individual effect toggles, especially for a 4K target. If the game is close to your desired performance, reduce resolution only one available step and reassess before changing several effects. The smallest reduction that brings performance into an acceptable range preserves more detail than a large cut made preemptively.

Check that the game is actually using the resolution and monitor you intend. EA exposes display and resolution controls in the graphics menu. A mismatch between the intended output and the selected display setting can make an otherwise reasonable settings comparison misleading.

When is it worth disabling Dynamic Shadows?

Dynamic Shadows are the first individual graphics effect to test when a small-to-moderate performance shortfall remains. In PC Gamer’s mid-range system, disabling them produced a measured 16% frame-rate improvement, the largest gain from a single toggle in that test. The article also found their visual difference comparatively limited against the standards of newer games, making this a plausible compromise when maintaining resolution is important.

That 16% is specific to PC Gamer’s test, not a forecast for your computer. The test used an RTX 3060 Ti and Ryzen 5 5600X mid-range configuration, and was published on May 17, 2021. Hardware, drivers, game updates, resolution, and scene load can all change the result. Treat the figure as evidence that the setting is worth checking, not a promise.

What does Ambient Occlusion change?

Ambient Occlusion adds depth to areas where surfaces meet or block light, such as corners and alcoves. Its effect can be subtle depending on the scene, which is why it is a reasonable next compromise after shadows. EA identifies turning it off as a possible performance improvement. PC Gamer measured a 7% improvement on its tested system, from 126 fps to 135 fps, when it was disabled.

As with the shadow result, these are historical measurements rather than a universal expectation. Keep Ambient Occlusion on if the added depth matters to you and performance is already acceptable. If a lower resolution and shadow adjustment still leave the PC short of its target, turn it off and compare in a similar scene.

Should Antialiasing stay on?

Usually, yes. Antialiasing smooths the stair-step edges on objects. PC Gamer measured just under a 6% frame-rate gain from turning it off, but reported that the image became visibly jaggier. That makes it a less attractive early cut than Dynamic Shadows or Ambient Occlusion for players who want to retain the remaster’s visual polish.

If you do disable it because the system remains below target, compare the image at your normal viewing distance and resolution. Re-enable it if edge shimmer or jagged outlines are more distracting than the performance benefit is helpful. The small gain in the cited test is not evidence that every system will gain the same amount.

Are Motion Blur and Film Grain worth turning off?

These settings are best treated as aesthetic and comfort choices. Motion Blur softens movement; Film Grain adds a textured, film-like look. PC Gamer found little performance effect from disabling either, so switching them off is unlikely to solve a meaningful frame-rate problem by itself. Turn them off if you prefer a clearer-looking image or dislike the effects, but do not expect them to compensate for a demanding resolution.

How should you approach HDR?

HDR is not a general-purpose performance optimization. EA documents an Auto HDR option along with separate HDR contrast and brightness controls. Leave HDR on Auto when the display and operating-system HDR path are correctly configured, then calibrate the image instead of raising brightness indiscriminately. EA documents HDR brightness on a 400–10000 scale; this is a control range, not a recommended value for every screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the picture looks washed out or too dark, check that HDR is enabled and configured consistently on the display and in the operating system, then revisit the game’s HDR controls. The right calibration depends on the screen and viewing conditions, so there is no one brightness or contrast value that can be recommended from the available evidence. If HDR does not look right, compare with the display’s intended SDR presentation rather than assuming HDR must look better on every setup.

What do the published performance figures actually tell you?

PC Gamer’s analysis, published May 17, 2021, compared three systems: a GTX 1650 Super with a Core i5-10400F; an RTX 3060 Ti with a Ryzen 5 5600X; and an RTX 3080 with a Ryzen 9 5900X. It reported that 4K play was achievable across those configurations and cited 55 fps at 4K with maximum settings on a GeForce GTX 1650 Ti. That is the article’s reported result for that test context—not a current guarantee for a GTX 1650 Ti, and not proof that every lower-tier PC can sustain 4K.

The same analysis is useful for relative trade-offs: Dynamic Shadows had the largest measured gain among the tested toggles, Ambient Occlusion had a smaller but measurable gain, and Antialiasing gave a modest improvement at an obvious image cost. Motion Blur and Film Grain had little measured effect. The numbers should not be combined into a prediction of the performance you will see after switching several options: individual changes can interact, and the tests do not establish a universal combined result.

EA says the trilogy received more than 30,000 improved textures and was rebuilt around a more modern, unified Unreal Engine 3 foundation. The stated goal was to preserve the original aesthetic while modernizing presentation. That context supports a measured approach: lower a costly setting only when it addresses a real performance need, rather than stripping away effects without checking their individual impact.

Will your PC meet the official requirements?

EA’s current product page lists the following PC requirements. They are compatibility and target-baseline specifications, not promises of a particular frame rate or resolution.

Minimum Recommended
Operating system 64-bit Windows 10 64-bit Windows 10
Processor Intel Core i5-3570 or AMD FX-8350 class Intel Core i7-7700 or Ryzen 7 3700X class
Memory 8 GB RAM 16 GB RAM
Graphics GTX 760 or Radeon 7970/R9 280X class GTX 1070 or Radeon Vega 56 class
Graphics API DirectX 11 DirectX 11
Storage 120 GB 120 GB

Meeting the minimum requirement does not mean the game will hold a particular frame rate at maximum settings, just as meeting the recommended tier does not guarantee a specific result at 4K. Use the settings ladder to match the actual performance you see to the resolution and display target you want. EA lists the PC game through the EA app and Steam.

What is a sensible step-by-step tuning process?

  1. Choose the target. Note the display refresh and decide what cap is practical for your PC. Start with a supported cap such as 60 or 120 fps when it matches your intended target; do not treat 240 fps as an obligation just because it is the default option.
  2. Set the display path. Confirm the selected monitor and resolution. Use Fullscreen or Borderless according to your preference, and decide whether VSync’s reduction in tearing is worth its possible input-lag trade-off.
  3. Establish the visual baseline. Keep Antialiasing, Ambient Occlusion, and Dynamic Shadows enabled at first. Leave HDR on Auto only if the display and operating-system HDR configuration are appropriate.
  4. Check performance in comparable play. Observe whether performance meets your practical target in the situations where it matters. Avoid drawing a conclusion from a single different scene or treating an isolated peak as sustained performance.
  5. Lower resolution one step if needed. Reassess before touching other effects. This has a clearer broad performance trade-off than toggling several settings at random.
  6. Try Dynamic Shadows next. Turn them off if you still need headroom, then compare both performance and the shadowing in the image.
  7. Try Ambient Occlusion next. Disable it only if the remaining shortfall justifies losing some depth in corners and occluded areas.
  8. Use Antialiasing as a later compromise. Turn it off only if necessary; restore it if jagged edges are more noticeable than the benefit.
  9. Adjust comfort effects last. Set Motion Blur and Film Grain according to preference, not in expectation of a substantial FPS increase.

Changing one option at a time makes it easier to identify which compromise helped and which one only made the game look worse. If a change disappoints, restore it; the settings are reversible, and a measured approach is more informative than applying a blanket “low” preset.

Why does the remaster deserve a settings-first approach?

The goal is not to maximize every visual effect or to preserve every option regardless of performance. It is to spend performance where it matters to your experience. EA describes the remaster as retaining the trilogy’s visual identity while improving its presentation, including more than 30,000 improved textures. PC Gamer’s reported results suggest that some costly adjustments can be made with a smaller visible penalty than others.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is why resolution, Dynamic Shadows, and Ambient Occlusion are practical early levers, while Antialiasing is better preserved where possible. A sharper native-resolution image with one carefully chosen effect reduced may suit a player better than a heavily simplified image with every setting turned down. Conversely, if you value smoothness more than detail, a modest resolution reduction can be the right trade. The right result is the one that meets your target while keeping the visual compromises you actually notice to a minimum.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell whether a settings change actually helped?

Compare the same kind of gameplay before and after the change, and alter one setting at a time. Scene complexity can vary, so a different area or moment may not provide a fair comparison; judge whether the change improves performance in the situations that matter to you.

Why does the game still feel uneven if the FPS number is high?

A high peak frame-rate reading does not by itself show that output is consistent. Choose a cap your PC can sustain and assess the experience across ordinary gameplay rather than relying only on a brief peak; the available benchmark results do not establish a universal frame-pacing fix.

What should I check if HDR looks washed out?

Verify that HDR is configured on the display and through the operating system, then revisit the game’s Auto, contrast, and brightness controls. Avoid assuming that a higher brightness value will correct every display, since calibration depends on the screen and its setup.
