Mass Effect 2 is the best overall Mass Effect game if you value memorable companions and personal stories. Mass Effect 3 is the strongest payoff to the trilogy, the original Mass Effect remains the essential worldbuilding foundation, and Mass Effect: Andromeda is the better fit for players who prioritize exploration and flexible combat over tightly cumulative storytelling. For a first playthrough, use Mass Effect Legendary Edition and play the trilogy in release order: Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, then Mass Effect 3. Andromeda is a separate Ryder-led adventure rather than a continuation of Shepard’s campaign.

Where should a first-time player start?
Start with Mass Effect Legendary Edition. Electronic Arts describes it as containing the single-player base content from Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, plus more than 40 downloadable-content items. EA also says choices travel from one game to the next and can affect missions, relationships, battles and the fate of the galaxy.

Play the trilogy in this order: Mass Effect → Mass Effect 2 → Mass Effect 3. That sequence lets the first game’s political decisions and relationships feed the second game, then lets both earlier entries inform the third game’s reunions and war effort. Treat Andromeda as a separate Pathfinder/Ryder story in a new galaxy, not as chapter four of Shepard’s arc.
If you want more lore after finishing the games, the franchise also has licensed novels, comics, statues and board games. Check the exact edition and current availability before buying, because those products are separate from the Legendary Edition package.

Why is Mass Effect 2 ranked first?
Mass Effect 2 ranks first because it is built around people rather than a single exposition-heavy plot. Its campaign recruits twelve distinct crew members and gives most of them a dedicated loyalty mission. Those missions let Shepard understand a character’s history, challenge their motives and decide whether that person is ready for the final operation.

The central question becomes whether Shepard has prepared the crew well enough to survive the suicide mission, so conversations and side missions carry consequences beyond optional flavor.
This is also the series’ most consistently personal entry. Friendships, rivalries and romances receive room to develop, and the large cast means different players can form very different emotional priorities. The game makes the crew feel like an interdependent group rather than a list of combat abilities.
The trade-off is narrative scale. The broader Reaper-and-Collector conflict often recedes while the game tells self-contained character episodes. That focus is why the companions work so well, but it also means Mass Effect 2 is less self-contained as a grand trilogy chapter than the first game and less concerned with final resolution than the third.
Is Mass Effect 3 better than Mass Effect 2?
Mass Effect 3 is better for payoff; Mass Effect 2 is better for sustained companion storytelling. The third game inherits decisions from both earlier entries and brings old allies, political conflicts and unfinished character arcs into the Reaper war.

Its strongest material depends on accumulated history. The genophage storyline, Mordin’s arc and the quarian-Geth conflict involving Tali have far greater weight when the player has lived through the earlier games. Reunions and returning characters can make a short scene feel like the result of dozens of previous decisions.
That cumulative design gives Mass Effect 3 the trilogy’s strongest sense of consequence during most of its campaign. It must resolve plot points and relationships established over two games, and it generally succeeds at making the war feel personal as well as galactic.
The limitation is concentrated at the end. Many earlier choices matter throughout the campaign, but the ultimate conclusion narrows into a smaller set of final outcomes. That contrast explains the ranking: Mass Effect 3 delivers the biggest payoff, while Mass Effect 2 maintains the more consistently satisfying character-centered structure from beginning to end.
What makes the original Mass Effect essential?
The original Mass Effect is the best foundation because it establishes the vocabulary that the sequels expand. It introduces the Citadel’s political structure, Shepard’s role as a Spectre, the Reaper threat, the Council and the major tensions among the galaxy’s species.

Saren’s motivations are more sympathetic and politically complicated than a simple villain setup, while decisions about the Council and the wider galactic order teach the player what kinds of moral and political trade-offs the series will revisit.
The cost of that foundation is age. Combat, pacing, planetary exploration and companion development are less refined than in the sequels. The Legendary Edition improves presentation and usability, but it does not turn the first game into the more fluid action RPG that Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 became.

Play it first if you care about seeing the setting develop from its beginning, understanding why later political decisions matter or experiencing the original atmosphere. If you mainly want modern combat flow, expect a slower opening and more friction before the series reaches its later design.
Should you play Mass Effect: Andromeda?
Yes, if exploration, movement and a new-galaxy premise matter more to you than tightly connected trilogy consequences. Andromeda follows Pathfinder Ryder rather than Shepard, so its tone, cast and goals are intentionally different.
The official manual says decisions can affect how the story unfolds, how other characters regard Ryder and whether missions succeed. It also gives Ryder dialogue tones including Emotional, Logical, Casual, Professional and, in some situations, Impulsive. That creates more moment-to-moment control over Ryder’s personality than the original Paragon/Renegade framing.
Its strengths are flexible combat, exploration, loyalty missions and a willingness to let the player shape a protagonist’s voice. PC Gamer’s retrospective also credits it with more nuanced companion writing and subtler consequences than its reputation sometimes suggests.
The weakness is cohesion. Other coverage has criticized uneven writing, open-world activities that can feel empty and companions who do not leave as strong an impression as the trilogy’s best characters. The fairest conclusion is not that Andromeda lacks worthwhile ideas, but that its narrative momentum and cumulative impact are less consistent.

How do choices carry across the trilogy?
The trilogy’s defining feature is choice continuity: a decision made in one game can change a later mission, relationship, battle or character’s fate. That is different from unlimited branching. The games preserve a large number of variables, but they still guide the player through a shared central campaign.
EA’s N7 Day 2021 article illustrates how differently players approach those decisions. It reported that 60% chose Ashley and 40% chose Kaidan, 69% chose to save the Council and 31% did not, and 15% of players did not recruit Garrus. EA also reported that Garrus was the companion most likely to survive the Suicide Mission and Mordin the least likely, without publishing percentages for those survival figures.
Those numbers describe player behavior, not a quality ranking. They show that the series supports genuinely divergent playthroughs, while the imported-save system makes the consequences cumulative rather than isolated to a single conversation.
Andromeda offers a different kind of freedom. Its tone choices let Ryder sound more emotional, logical, casual, professional or impulsive from scene to scene, even when the long-range plot does not branch as dramatically as Shepard’s trilogy.

Should you choose Legendary Edition or Andromeda?
Choose Legendary Edition when you want a connected three-game arc, returning characters and decisions that accumulate toward a galaxy-scale conclusion. It is the default recommendation for a first-time player because the trilogy’s strongest effects depend on playing the entries in sequence.
Choose Andromeda when you want a fresh cast, a new-galaxy premise, more emphasis on exploration and a protagonist whose conversational tone is yours to shape. It is especially suitable after the trilogy, when you want a different setting rather than another chapter of Shepard’s story.

- Prioritize companions and loyalty missions: start with Mass Effect 2, but play the trilogy if possible.
- Prioritize the final consequences of long-running arcs: play through Mass Effect 3 after the first two games.
- Prioritize setting and political context: do not skip the original Mass Effect.
- Prioritize movement, exploration and role-play tone: choose Andromeda.
