Mass Effect Game Order: How to Play the Trilogy, Andromeda, and DLC

For a first playthrough, play Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3 in that order, then move on to Mass Effect: Andromeda if you want another adventure in the series. The simplest way to play Shepard’s trilogy is Mass Effect Legendary Edition, which packages the three remastered games and most of their DLC. Treat Andromeda as a separate story, not as a fourth Shepard chapter.

If you want the story expansions in context, the key placements are: play Arrival after the main campaign of Mass Effect 2, start From Ashes early in Mass Effect 3, and save Citadel for late in that game, before Priority: Cerberus Headquarters.

What order should I play the Mass Effect games in?

Play the original trilogy in release-story order: Mass Effect, then Mass Effect 2, then Mass Effect 3. After finishing Shepard’s story, play Mass Effect: Andromeda as a separate follow-up adventure if you want more of the series.

  1. Mass Effect: Begin here to meet Commander Shepard and learn the setting, major factions, and events that the sequels build on.
  2. Mass Effect 2: Continue directly from the first game. Keeping the sequence intact makes the trilogy’s ongoing story easier to follow.
  3. Mass Effect 3: Finish the Shepard trilogy before starting the separate Andromeda story.
  4. Mass Effect: Andromeda: Play it after the trilogy for the clearest first-time progression. It has a separate protagonist and setting rather than continuing Shepard’s story.

This order is a recommendation for newcomers, not a requirement. The trilogy is packaged as one remastered collection, while Andromeda is cataloged separately. That division makes the trilogy-first route the least confusing way to approach the series, but it does not mean Andromeda must be played last or that it is a direct fourth chapter.

The practical takeaway is that there are two different ways to think about “Mass Effect in order.” For Shepard’s connected story, the order is simply the three numbered games. For a broader tour of the series, finish those three and then start Andromeda. You do not need to alternate between the two storylines, and the play order does not require completing every expansion before moving to the next main game.

Should I play Andromeda before or after the trilogy?

For a first playthrough, play Andromeda after Mass Effect 3. It is a separate Ryder-led adventure, so it is better understood as a new leg of the series than as the next episode of Shepard’s story.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BioWare and EA list Andromeda separately from Legendary Edition. EA announced its North American release for March 21, 2017, with Europe beginning March 23, 2017. Those dates and the separate catalog listings help clarify its place in the franchise, but the reason to put it after the trilogy is practical: first-time players can complete the connected Shepard arc before moving to another protagonist and setting.

If you have already finished the trilogy, there is no need to treat Andromeda as an optional epilogue to Shepard’s story. Start it when you want a distinct adventure in the same broad series. If you have not played the earlier games, the recommended sequence remains the same, but the available information establishes a preferred order—not a prerequisite that prevents someone from starting Andromeda first.

Choose based on what you want next: if you want more of Shepard’s arc, continue through the numbered trilogy; if you want a separate lead and setting, Andromeda is the follow-up. Its place after Mass Effect 3 in this guide is about giving newcomers a clean path through the connected trilogy, not about unlocking the other game.

When should I play the Mass Effect DLC?

Most DLC can be started at more than one point, but placing it around the main campaign helps preserve the story’s pace. Use the sequence below as a spoiler-light guide; exact mission triggers can vary somewhat with edition and progress.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mass Effect

  • Bring Down the Sky: Play after the Normandy and galaxy exploration are available, but before Ilos, the first game’s endgame. It is the meaningful story expansion for Mass Effect in Legendary Edition.
  • Pinnacle Station: This is optional, combat-focused classic DLC. EA lists it on the classic-game DLC page, but it is absent from the official Xbox and Steam included-content lists for Legendary Edition. Do not assume it is included in that collection.

For the first game, the most important timing choice is not to leave Bring Down the Sky until after the campaign. Fit it into the open exploration portion, before the endgame begins. Pinnacle Station is a different kind of add-on: it is optional combat content rather than the story expansion to prioritize, and its classic-edition availability is separate from what is listed for the remaster.

Mass Effect 2

  • Zaeed — The Price of Revenge and Kasumi — Stolen Memory: Play them during the recruitment and loyalty phase, once their missions are available.
  • Firewalker, Normandy Crash Site, and equipment packs: Treat these as optional side content during the middle of the campaign. There is no need to hold every add-on until the end.
  • Overlord: Play during the middle portion, after the crew and Normandy are established.
  • Lair of the Shadow Broker: Save it for late in the game, after Shepard has assembled a substantial team and before the final transition into Mass Effect 3.
  • Arrival: Play after the main Mass Effect 2 campaign. It works best as a bridge into Mass Effect 3, rather than as an early side mission.

A simple way to handle the second game is to add recruitment and loyalty content as it opens, rather than pausing the campaign to clear every optional activity at once. Firewalker, the Normandy Crash Site, and equipment packs can sit alongside the middle stretch of the game. The bigger story expansions benefit from more deliberate placement: Overlord belongs after the ship and crew are established, while Lair of the Shadow Broker works better later, once Shepard has a substantial team.

Keep Arrival distinct from those midgame additions. Its recommended position is after the main campaign, where it serves as a transition toward Mass Effect 3. If you are following a straightforward first-run sequence, finish the main story, play Arrival, and then move on to the third game.

Mass Effect 3

  • From Ashes: Start it early, after the opening sequence makes it available, so its character and lore can inform more of the campaign.
  • Omega: Play after the Citadel coup, during the middle portion of the game.
  • Leviathan: Play during the middle-to-late section, before the endgame revelations and final missions. It can be started in pieces; completing it before the final assault keeps its added lore in context.
  • Citadel: Save it for late in the game, after the core squad and major relationships are established. Complete it before Priority: Cerberus Headquarters, the point of no return identified in the mission-order reference.
  • Extended Cut: This is included in Legendary Edition’s Mass Effect 3 content, so owners of that edition do not need to make a separate purchase decision for it.

In Mass Effect 3, prioritize From Ashes early because its character and lore can then be part of more of the campaign. Place Omega after the Citadel coup, and work through Leviathan in the middle-to-late stretch rather than leaving it for after the final missions. It is possible to start Leviathan in pieces; the useful boundary is to complete it before the final assault.

Citadel is the late-game exception worth planning around. Wait until the main squad and relationships are established, then complete it before Priority: Cerberus Headquarters. That mission is the relevant point of no return in the mission-order guidance, so do not start it expecting to return to the same set of late-game activities afterward.

These placements are intended to keep story content in a sensible order, not to suggest that every add-on is mandatory. When an optional mission becomes available earlier or later than expected, follow the mission’s availability in your edition and save the particularly consequential bridge or late-game content for the placements above.

What does Mass Effect Legendary Edition include?

Electronic Arts describes Mass Effect Legendary Edition as a remastered collection of the Shepard trilogy. Its official support documentation lists PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC through the EA app or Steam. The collection is the most convenient route if your goal is to play all three main games in sequence without buying the original trilogy as separate games.

EA’s 2021 launch materials describe more than 40 DLC items across the three games, including story content, weapons, armor, and promotional packs. The official Xbox and Steam listings name major story expansions such as Bring Down the Sky, Lair of the Shadow Broker, Arrival, From Ashes, Extended Cut, Leviathan, Omega, and Citadel, as well as equipment and promotional packs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes Legendary Edition a strong fit for players who want the trilogy together with most of its notable add-on content. “More than 40 DLC items” describes the collection across three games; it does not mean every classic add-on is included. The most important exception to check is Pinnacle Station.

For this play order, the package’s main advantage is convenience: one collection brings together all three remastered Shepard games instead of requiring separate purchases of the original trilogy. It also groups the major story expansions and a range of weapons, armor, equipment, and promotional items across the trilogy. The inclusion of those extras does not turn every one into a required story step; you can follow the main campaigns and add the expansions at the placements above.

EA’s support documentation names PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC through the EA app or Steam. The official Xbox and Steam product descriptions also identify included content. Storefront availability can change, so check the current listing for your platform when you are ready to buy; the supported platform information here is not a promise about current stock, discounts, or a particular price.

Is Pinnacle Station included in Mass Effect Legendary Edition?

Do not count on Pinnacle Station being included. EA lists it as classic Mass Effect DLC, but it is not named in the official Xbox or Steam lists of content included with Legendary Edition.

The distinction matters because Bring Down the Sky and Pinnacle Station both appear on EA’s classic-game DLC page, while only Bring Down the Sky appears among the named Legendary Edition inclusions. If you are choosing an edition specifically to play Pinnacle Station, check the applicable classic-game listing rather than assuming that the remastered collection contains it.

In short, the “over 40 DLC items” description is not the same as a guarantee that every add-on ever released for the original games is present. The official Xbox and Steam inclusion lists name many story expansions and packs, but not Pinnacle Station. If that combat-focused classic add-on is important to you, verify the exact classic-game option for your platform rather than buying Legendary Edition on the assumption it is inside.

Which Mass Effect edition should I choose for this play order?

Choose Legendary Edition if you want the Shepard trilogy in a single remastered collection with most of its major DLC. Choose Andromeda when you want its separate Ryder-led adventure, not when you are looking for more Shepard missions.

EA’s support documentation identifies Legendary Edition for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via the EA app or Steam. Official Xbox and Steam listings also describe the included games and add-ons. Storefront availability can change, so check the relevant official store for current availability on your platform before purchasing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The original games remain relevant if your specific goal is a classic edition or an add-on not included in the remaster. In particular, EA lists Pinnacle Station separately as classic DLC. The documented inclusion lists do not establish that every classic extra is part of Legendary Edition, so check the exact content listing for the edition you are considering.

There is no need to choose between the trilogy and Andromeda as though they were competing editions of the same story. Legendary Edition is the consolidated route through Shepard’s three games; Andromeda is a separate adventure for when you want a different protagonist and setting. If you are shopping specifically for the connected trilogy, the remastered collection is the direct match. If your goal is only the separate Ryder story, consider Andromeda on its own.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

No specific price comparison is necessary to make that choice: the relevant distinction is scope and convenience. Legendary Edition gathers three remastered games and more than 40 DLC items into one collection, while the original trilogy would mean separate game purchases. Check your platform’s official storefront for current pricing and availability, and read the included-content list if a particular classic add-on matters to you.

How do I keep the DLC order manageable?

You do not need to stop the main campaign after every mission becomes available. Keep the few placement-sensitive expansions in mind, then use the rest as optional content when their missions fit naturally into your progress.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Finish the main trilogy in sequence: Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3.
  2. In the first game, leave Bring Down the Sky until exploration opens: Complete it before Ilos, rather than saving it until after the campaign.
  3. In the second game, fit recruitment and loyalty missions into the middle: Play Zaeed and Kasumi when available, and place Overlord after the crew and Normandy are established.
  4. Reserve the second game’s bridge content for later: Play Lair of the Shadow Broker late, then complete the main campaign before Arrival and the transition to Mass Effect 3.
  5. Start From Ashes early in the third game: Play it once it becomes available after the opening sequence.
  6. Keep the third game’s late content ahead of its point of no return: Play Citadel before Priority: Cerberus Headquarters, and finish Leviathan before the final assault if you want its lore in context.
  7. Play Andromeda as its own adventure: Start it after the trilogy for the clearest first-time progression, without treating it as part of Shepard’s mission sequence.

Mission availability is tied to progress, and triggers can vary slightly by edition. If a named mission is not available yet, continue the main game until it opens rather than searching for a universal fixed mission count or trying to force the DLC into a particular slot.

If you want the shortest planning checklist, remember four anchors: Bring Down the Sky before Ilos; Arrival after the main Mass Effect 2 campaign; From Ashes early in Mass Effect 3; and Citadel late, but before Priority: Cerberus Headquarters. Fit the remaining optional content around its availability and your campaign progress.

How we picked this order

The sequence follows the connected Shepard trilogy and then separates Andromeda as a different adventure. The game order is supported by the current play-order reference and official product/catalog pages; the DLC placements follow the mission-order reference and the timing guidance for individual expansions.

The edition recommendation is based on official product descriptions and included-content listings: EA presents Legendary Edition as a remastered trilogy, its 2021 launch materials describe more than 40 DLC items, and the official Xbox and Steam lists name the principal expansions. The recommendation does not imply that the collection includes every classic DLC item; the Pinnacle Station exception is why checking the exact edition contents matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What order should I play the Mass Effect games in?

For the connected Shepard story, play Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3 in that order. Follow with Mass Effect: Andromeda if you want another, separate adventure.

Should I play Andromeda before or after the trilogy?

After the trilogy is the clearest first-time route because it lets you complete Shepard’s connected story before moving to a separate Ryder-led adventure. It is a recommendation, not a requirement.

Do I need to play the original games before Andromeda?

The available series information does not establish the Shepard games as a prerequisite for Andromeda. Playing the trilogy first is recommended for a clean progression through the series, but Andromeda is a separate story.

When should I play the Mass Effect DLC?

Play Bring Down the Sky after exploration opens and before Ilos; fit Zaeed and Kasumi into Mass Effect 2’s recruitment and loyalty phase; play Arrival after that game’s main campaign; start From Ashes early in Mass Effect 3; and complete Citadel late but before Priority: Cerberus Headquarters. The guide’s DLC section covers the other major placements.

Does Legendary Edition include all the DLC?

It includes more than 40 DLC items across the trilogy, including major story expansions, equipment, and promotional packs. Do not assume it includes every classic add-on: Pinnacle Station is not named in the official Xbox or Steam included-content lists.

Is Pinnacle Station included in Mass Effect Legendary Edition?

Do not count on it. EA lists Pinnacle Station as classic Mass Effect DLC, but it is absent from the official Xbox and Steam lists of Legendary Edition content.

Can I skip the DLC and still play the Mass Effect trilogy?

Yes. The three main games provide the trilogy’s core sequence. The DLC is optional; its story expansions and other content can add to the experience, but they are not required to follow the recommended game order.

Where can I check whether my copy includes a specific expansion?

Check the included-content description for the exact edition and storefront you plan to use. Official Xbox and Steam listings name many included expansions, while EA’s classic-game DLC listing identifies add-ons such as Pinnacle Station that should not be assumed to be in the remaster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which platforms is Legendary Edition listed for?

Electronic Arts’ support documentation lists PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC through the EA app or Steam. Check the official storefront for your platform for current availability and pricing.

Did Andromeda come out after the original trilogy?

EA announced a North American release date of March 21, 2017, and a European release beginning March 23, 2017. Its later release does not make it a direct continuation of Shepard’s story.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start with Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, preferably through Legendary Edition for the consolidated trilogy and most major DLC. Play Andromeda afterward as a separate adventure. For DLC, the essential timing reminders are Arrival after Mass Effect 2, From Ashes early in Mass Effect 3, and Citadel before Priority: Cerberus Headquarters; do not assume Pinnacle Station is included in the remaster.
