In Marvel’s Wolverine on PS5, open Photo Mode from the Pause menu, or assign it to a DualSense D-pad shortcut in Settings. From there, you can adjust the frame, pose and reposition Wolverine, change available suit and claw options, hide characters, and build a scene with as many as five adjustable lights. The mode also includes filters; if they appear not to work, Insomniac’s current support advice is to enable “Fullscreen Effects” in Visual settings.

How do I open Photo Mode in Marvel’s Wolverine?

Pause the game and choose Photo Mode; that is the default way to enter it. If you want quicker access, assign Photo Mode to a DualSense D-pad direction in Settings. The official guide describes this as a configurable shortcut, not a requirement: you can keep opening the mode from Pause if that suits the way you play.

Photo Mode is available during gameplay, according to PlayStation’s announcement, and was announced with a day-one update. If you cannot find it, first check that the game is updated. The available information does not specify a minimum patch number, so there is no version number to look for here.

The guide does not give a button-by-button map for every Photo Mode action. Use the on-screen control prompts in your game for the exact input labels, which can be more reliable than assuming a control from another game or another player’s setup.

#1 Best Overall
Marvel's Wolverine PS5
  • Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
  • Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
  • An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
  • A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor

How do I compose a screenshot?

Start with the frame and the interface: set the orientation you want, move the Photo Mode tabs if they obscure the picture, then explore the scene before leaving the mode. The official guide emphasizes checking alternative angles and foreground details rather than settling on the first view.

Choose landscape, angled, or portrait framing

The Tilt option shifts framing from landscape toward portrait, including a 9:16 portrait composition. That makes it useful to decide early whether the image is meant to show the width of a setting or emphasize Wolverine vertically. Revisit the tilt after moving the camera: a framing that fits a character close-up may crop important scenery, while a wider composition can make an environment the main subject.

Move the interface out of the shot

The Photo Mode interface has multiple tabs and can be shifted from one side of the screen to the other. If the tabs sit over a face, weapon, or other important detail, move them before judging the composition. This changes where the controls appear, not the scene itself.

Look around before you leave

Pan around the scene to test alternate angles and foreground details. A small change in viewpoint can reveal a useful element in the foreground or remove a visual obstruction. The guide specifically recommends this check before exiting Photo Mode; treat it as part of framing rather than an optional final flourish.

How can I pose and customize Wolverine?

Character Pose cycles through poses that are available to the player, while movement and rotation let you refine Wolverine’s position and facing within a radius. Facial expressions, unlocked suits, and unlocked claws provide further choices. Because the options depend on what has been unlocked, do not expect every suit or pose to be selectable in every save.

Build the pose in a useful order

  1. Choose a pose. Cycle through the available Character Pose options to establish the overall silhouette.
  2. Position Wolverine. Use the movement controls to adjust his placement within the mode’s repositioning radius.
  3. Set his facing and expression. Rotate him toward the camera or scene, then refine the facial expression if the selected pose allows it.
  4. Select from unlocked options. Choose an available suit or claws if those choices support the image you want.
  5. Check the whole frame. Revisit the camera angle after posing so the environment, character, and any foreground detail work together.

The guide also describes toggles for hiding Wolverine or enemy NPCs. These are useful when a character blocks the scene or when the composition works better without a figure in it. They are visibility controls for the shot, not a way to change the underlying story scene.

How do Photo Mode lights work?

You can use up to five independent light sources. Each can be set to Sphere or Spotlight and adjusted for color, intensity, and distance, giving you a way to shape the character portrait or evoke the scene’s existing lighting.

Rank #2

Start small, then add purposefully

For a portrait, PlayStation’s guide recommends beginning with one or two lights. This keeps the lighting setup manageable while you decide what the image needs. A light can be used to emphasize a subject or create a more deliberate portrait look; changing its color or intensity can shift the mood without changing the underlying location.

For a more environmental treatment, add lights as needed to imitate or supplement the surrounding illumination. The five-light limit is a maximum, not a target: adding sources without a specific purpose can make a scene harder to control. The guide does not prescribe exact values for distance, intensity, or color, so adjust those settings by eye for the composition in front of you.

Which filters and image effects can I use?

The official guide confirms that filters are part of the multi-tab Photo Mode interface, but it does not provide a complete official catalog. A specialist secondary article reports controls for Filter Type and Blend, Frame Type, Backgrounds, Vignette Intensity and Size, Film Grain Strength, and Sharpening. Treat that list as secondary reporting; the exact options available in your game should be checked in its Photo Mode interface.

These reported controls cover different kinds of finishing choices. Filter Type and Blend concern the filter treatment; frame and background controls affect the presentation around the image; vignette, film grain, and sharpening adjust visual effects. The secondary article’s list should not be read as confirmation that every effect is available in every situation or that it is a complete, official inventory.

What to do if filters seem broken

  1. Open the game’s Settings and go to Visual settings.
  2. Enable Fullscreen Effects.
  3. Return to Photo Mode and check whether the filter effect is now visible.

This is the workaround given by Insomniac support for filters that do not appear to work. The support page also says the issue is being investigated, so the instruction may change; if the setting does not resolve the problem, consult the current support guidance rather than assuming the filter controls are permanently broken.

How can I capture an action moment?

Assign Game Speed to another D-pad button in Settings, then choose a reduced speed of 30%, 50%, or 70% to give yourself more time to capture an action moment. These are the settings named in PlayStation’s October 2026 guide. They are listed as options for slowing the game, not as guarantees that every action will be available for a particular composition.

Separating the Game Speed shortcut from the Photo Mode shortcut can make the setup easier to use: one is for slowing an action, while the other opens the composition tools. The guide says Game Speed can be assigned to another D-pad button; it does not specify that you must use a particular direction. Check the prompts in Settings when choosing the available mapping.

Where can I take screenshots, and how do I revisit a scene?

The official guide illustrates Photo Mode in several story settings: an arcade early in “In the Shadows,” a casino, lantern-lit compositions, and character moments in places such as Canada, Shinjuku, and Madripoor. These are examples, not a complete index of locations where Photo Mode can be used.

After the credits, chapter select is available from the bed in Logan’s cabin. Load your save, go to the bed, and use chapter select to return to story locations and moments. The guide does not enumerate every chapter or every possible screenshot setting, so use chapter select to revisit the example regions and explore scenes for yourself.

Examples to try

  • Arcade: The guide uses the arcade early in “In the Shadows” as an example location. Try a wider frame to include more of the setting, then compare it with a portrait crop.
  • Casino: A casino scene is another official example. Check whether shifting the Photo Mode tabs clears the part of the image you want to emphasize.
  • Lantern-lit scene: The guide includes lantern-lit compositions. These are a natural place to experiment with the color and intensity of one or two lights before adding more.
  • Canada, Shinjuku, and Madripoor: These are among the regions shown in the guide’s location examples; they are not promised to be the only suitable places for screenshots.

What is the simplest workflow for a polished shot?

A repeatable sequence helps keep the camera, pose, lighting, and effects from competing with one another. The steps below use only options described in PlayStation’s guide and the support workaround for filters.

  1. Pause and open Photo Mode, or use the D-pad shortcut you assigned.
  2. Move the interface tabs to the side that least interferes with the image.
  3. Choose landscape or portrait framing with Tilt, then pan around for a stronger angle or foreground detail.
  4. Select a pose and make small position, rotation, and expression adjustments.
  5. Choose an unlocked suit or claws if they fit the composition; hide Wolverine or enemy NPCs if they obstruct it.
  6. For a portrait, begin with one or two independent lights. Adjust type, color, intensity, and distance before considering additional sources.
  7. Apply any filter or other effects available in the interface. If filters appear inactive, enable Fullscreen Effects under Visual settings.
  8. For an action moment, set Game Speed to a reduced option using its assigned D-pad shortcut.
  9. Inspect the frame from another angle before exiting Photo Mode.

PlayStation describes Photo Modes as a way to explore photographic choices while looking more closely at a game’s art design. In Marvel’s Wolverine, the combination of framing, posing, visibility controls, lighting, and adjustable game speed gives you distinct ways to approach a still image without needing every feature in every shot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was Photo Mode included when Marvel’s Wolverine launched?

PlayStation announced the mode as available during gameplay with a day-one update. The announcement does not identify a specific patch number, so check that your installed game is up to date if the option is missing.

Does the official Photo Mode guide list every filter?

No. PlayStation’s guide is introductory and confirms that filters exist without giving a complete catalog. The longer list of effect controls comes from a specialist secondary article, not official documentation.

Do I need a special controller to use Photo Mode?

The guide describes assigning a shortcut to the DualSense D-pad, but it does not say that a special controller is required. It also leaves the exact shortcut choices to Settings rather than specifying one mandatory direction.
