A low price, polished photos, strong seller feedback or a convincing benchmark screenshot cannot prove that a marketplace GPU is genuine. Before buying, check the exact listing and seller, compare the price with current alternatives, ask for evidence of the actual card, keep payment and messages on-platform, and be ready to test the card as soon as it arrives. A warning sign is a reason to pause and verify—not proof of fraud by itself.
What are the biggest warning signs in a GPU listing?
Look for contradictions between the advertised model, the photos, the condition and the transaction terms. The more important details a seller leaves unclear—or refuses to verify—the less reason you have to pay before getting answers. Treat the listing as a set of claims to check, not as proof of what is inside a box.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- A price far below comparable cards: Check several current references and the cost of a new equivalent. There is no universal discount percentage that proves a listing is fake; an unusually low price is a prompt to investigate.
- Stock photos or images that do not show the card: “Box only,” “picture,” “parts” or similar wording can mean the listing is not for a complete, working graphics card. Read the whole description, including condition notes and exclusions.
- Vague or contradictory details: Look for a precise model name, memory capacity, condition, included accessories, shipping terms and return terms. A title that says one thing while the description disclaims another is a reason to stop and clarify.
- No useful photos of the actual item: Prefer clear views of the card, connectors, labels and included accessories. A sealed box, “open box” label or “like new” description does not authenticate what is inside.
- Pressure to pay or communicate elsewhere: Treat requests to leave marketplace messaging or checkout as a serious risk. The FTC warns against sellers who insist on gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps or cryptocurrency.
- Unclear return or dispute options: Before paying, confirm the transaction is eligible for the marketplace’s buyer protection and that you can meet its requirements and deadlines.
- Physical signs of damage or tampering: If you can inspect the card, check for damaged PCIe contacts, a cracked board, loose screws, heavy dust or signs it has been opened. These can indicate prior repair or abuse, but do not by themselves establish that the card is counterfeit.
Why an extreme bargain deserves extra scrutiny
A 2026 Tom’s Hardware report described a purported Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4080 16GB Aero OC offered on Xianyu for $143.50, compared with an approximately $1,199 launch price. The report characterized the asking price as roughly 12% of the original retail value and treated it as a red flag. That example illustrates why a dramatic gap warrants verification; it is not a formula for deciding whether another listing is fraudulent.
Compare the offer with multiple current references rather than a single old sale or launch price. Also compare it with the cost of a new equivalent: a used card can reasonably be less expensive, but the size of a discount alone cannot establish whether a listing is genuine. Consider the whole picture—price, photos, seller answers, condition, return terms and whether you can test the card. Urgency language that discourages comparison is another reason to slow down, not a reason to skip checks.

How can I check whether the card is the model advertised?
Compare evidence from the listing, the physical card and its reported hardware rather than relying on a seller’s label or the card’s exterior alone. GPU-Z and a saved video BIOS can help document what the installed card reports, but neither is a standalone authenticity certificate.
Before paying
- Write down the exact claim. Record the model, claimed memory, condition, accessories, seller name, price, shipping terms and return terms. This gives you a specific claim to verify rather than a broad product family.
- Compare the price with multiple references. Check the price of the claimed card and a new equivalent. A big difference should trigger more questions; do not rely on a fixed “safe discount” threshold.
- Check the entire listing. Read the description for “box only,” “picture,” “parts,” non-working language, missing accessories, ambiguous condition or disclaimers that conflict with the title. Check whether every photo appears to show the same item.
- Request current photos of the actual card. Ask for clear images of identifying details and, if needed, a current verification photo that shows the exact item. A seller’s benchmark screenshot is not conclusive: a test image does not establish that the same hardware will be shipped.
- Compare model and memory claims. Check the card’s physical layout and identifying details against authoritative product information for the stated model. Do not treat a label, shell or packaging as proof of the hardware inside.
- Check the transaction and save evidence. Confirm that payment and messaging stay on-platform, review the applicable buyer-protection terms, and save the listing and correspondence before checkout. Listings can change or disappear.
When requesting photos, be specific: ask to see the actual card rather than another product image, including its connectors, identifying labels and the accessories that are supposed to come with it. A current verification image can help establish that the seller has access to the item pictured, but it still cannot prove what hardware is beneath the cooler or guarantee that the same card will be shipped. A seller-provided benchmark screenshot has the same limitation: it is supporting material, not a substitute for checking the delivered card.

NVIDIA’s support instructions describe using GPU-Z to locate the “BIOS Version” field and save the video BIOS ROM file. Compare the card’s reported GPU name, memory and bus/interface information with the listing and the product information for the claimed model. Save the BIOS file and relevant screenshots as evidence if the details do not match.
These checks can reveal discrepancies, but they do not settle every case. A manipulated BIOS or a physical substitution can require deeper inspection or professional diagnosis. A 2026 Tom’s Hardware report described a card presented as an RTX 4080 that had a different GPU die and questionable memory beneath its exterior. That case is a reminder to treat software output as one part of a layered check, not a guarantee.
GPU-Z is useful because it records information reported by the installed card, and the saved video BIOS gives you additional technical evidence to retain. It should not be treated as an official certificate that the card is authentic. Compare the output with the exact model claim and authoritative product details; if the card’s physical appearance, reported identity and listing do not agree, preserve the information and use it as part of a marketplace or technical review rather than trying to resolve uncertainty from one field alone.

What should I do before paying?
Use the transaction itself as part of your verification. A plausible card at a plausible price is still a poor purchase if the listing is ambiguous or you have no clear route to challenge a wrong or faulty item.

- Resolve unanswered questions in writing. Ask for actual-item photos or clarification about the model, memory, condition and return terms. Keep the reply in the marketplace’s messaging system.
- Review seller history, but do not stop there. Feedback and account history are useful context, not proof that this particular card is genuine.
- Check the remedy before checkout. Read the live marketplace policy and the listing-specific terms to see whether the purchase qualifies for protection, what evidence is required and how quickly you must act.
- Pay through the marketplace with a method that offers a dispute route. Do not follow a request to move payment off-platform or use an irreversible method. The FTC specifically warns against sellers who insist on gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps or cryptocurrency.
- Keep a record. Save the listing text, photos, price, seller communications, checkout confirmation and receipt. The FTC recommends retaining purchase records in case an item is missing, wrong or defective.
The FTC’s online-shopping guidance puts the first step plainly: “Before you buy something online, shop around and check out sellers and products.” For a graphics card, that means looking beyond the advertised model name. Check whether the seller has answered specific questions, whether the photos and description agree, and whether the transaction leaves you a practical way to seek a remedy. Account age, positive feedback, a receipt or a marketplace badge can add context, but none confirms the hardware in the parcel.
Keep the conversation and payment on the platform whenever possible. The FTC warns: “Never buy anything from online sellers that insist you can only pay with gift cards, by wire transfers through companies like Western Union or MoneyGram, with a payment app, or with cryptocurrency.” These methods can make it difficult to recover money. If a seller has a legitimate reason to clarify a listing, that clarification should not require you to give up the platform’s checkout and dispute process.
How should I check a GPU when it arrives?
Document the package and card, compare what arrived with what was promised, and test promptly while you still have time to use the applicable return or dispute process. A test does not guarantee a refund, but it can help establish what you received and how it behaves.
- Document the delivery. Photograph or film the package and contents as received, and keep the shipping label and packing materials. Preserve the original listing and messages alongside these records.
- Compare the item with the listing. Check the model, physical layout, memory claims, accessories and disclosed condition. Note any mismatch or damage before changing or discarding anything.
- Record reported hardware information. Open GPU-Z, record the reported GPU name, memory and bus/interface information, and use its “BIOS Version” field to save the video BIOS ROM file as NVIDIA documents. Keep the output with your other evidence.
- Run a sustained workload promptly. Use a demanding benchmark or game and monitor stability, temperature, fan speed and power use. Tom’s Hardware’s used-GPU guidance recommends prompt testing with demanding workloads and monitoring utilities.
- Act on a mismatch or fault. If the card is wrong, defective, counterfeit or materially misrepresented, stop trying to resolve the matter through off-platform arrangements. Open the marketplace case within its applicable deadline and attach the listing, photos, test results and seller messages.
Testing is not just a search for a crash. Watch whether the card remains stable under a sustained workload and note temperatures, fan behavior and power use alongside the test results. Keep the outputs and photographs together so you can explain what you checked and when. Film or photograph the package as it arrived, but do not assume that a delivery video guarantees a refund; it is one way to preserve a record of the condition and contents.

Do not wait until the end of a return period to check a card. A fault or mismatch may take time to document and report, and marketplace deadlines can be strict. If the card does not match its description, or if it appears defective or counterfeit, use the official platform process promptly and attach relevant evidence. Avoid taking the conversation into an off-platform refund arrangement that could leave the marketplace without the information needed to review the case.
What protection can a marketplace or credit card offer?
Protection depends on the platform, listing and payment method, so check the live terms before you buy and follow their process if something goes wrong. Do not assume that a badge, seller promise or payment receipt automatically makes a transaction eligible.
eBay
eBay’s counterfeit policy says counterfeit items are not allowed and that only items sellers are certain are genuine should be listed. Its Money Back Guarantee policy says an eligible buyer may seek a refund when an item does not match the listing, arrives broken or faulty without adequate disclosure, or has strong indicators of being counterfeit. The policy generally gives buyers up to 30 calendar days after the estimated or actual delivery date to request a not-as-described return, subject to exceptions and listing-specific terms; sellers generally have three business days to respond. Confirm the current policy and your listing’s terms before relying on these general windows. To report a suspected fraudulent listing, eBay’s security guidance points to the “Report this item” link at the bottom of the listing.
eBay’s policy language is direct: “Only list items you’re certain are genuine.” It also says, “If authentication can’t be confirmed, don’t list.” For buyers, the practical point is to distinguish a platform rule from a guaranteed outcome for every transaction. Eligibility, exceptions and the details of a particular listing matter, so check the policy that applies at checkout and follow its reporting and return steps if something is wrong.

The FTC says a credit-card issuer may allow you to dispute a charge for an item that is missing, wrong or defective, and advises contacting the issuer promptly. Its online-shopping guidance says a dispute letter should reach the card company within 60 days of the first bill showing the error. Keep receipts, emails, listing information and other purchase records; check your issuer’s instructions for the required method and deadlines.

A card dispute is not a substitute for documenting the transaction or following the marketplace process. Retain the listing information, correspondence, receipt and any delivery or test evidence, then contact the issuer promptly if you need to dispute a charge. The FTC’s 60-day guidance is tied to the first bill showing the error; check your card issuer’s instructions so you use the required method and do not miss a deadline.
How should I weigh a listing across different marketplaces?
Compare the evidence and the remedy, not just the asking price. A local inspection may let you assess the actual card before paying, while a shipped purchase may depend more heavily on listing evidence, platform protection and post-arrival deadlines. The best choice is not automatically the platform with the lowest price; it is the transaction where you can establish what is being sold, pay through a protected route and act if the item differs from the claim.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Evidence quality | Are there actual-item photos, clear model and memory details, and answers to specific questions? Is any serial or invoice evidence relevant and consistent? |
| Transaction protection | Can you keep checkout and messages on-platform? Does the purchase qualify for a dispute route or return process, and what are its deadlines? |
| Testability | Can you inspect or test the actual card before payment, or will you need to validate it immediately after delivery? |
| Price realism | How does the asking price compare with multiple current references and a new equivalent? Is the seller using urgency to discourage comparison? |
| Remedy if something is wrong | Can you preserve evidence, open a case, return the item or dispute the payment under the applicable terms? |
For a local pickup, the main advantage is the possibility of seeing the actual card before handing over money; the limitation is that a visual inspection does not prove authenticity or guarantee that you will have a remedy if a problem appears later. For a shipped purchase, focus on actual-item evidence, the platform’s eligibility and deadlines, and your ability to test soon after delivery. On eBay, Facebook Marketplace or another service, compare the transaction terms rather than assuming the platform name alone makes a purchase safe.
How do I decide whether to proceed?
Proceed only when the listing’s claims, the seller’s answers, the available evidence and the transaction terms make sense together. A single reassuring signal cannot compensate for several unresolved contradictions.
- Pause and ask for clarification if the photos, model, memory, condition or included items are unclear.
- Walk away if the seller refuses reasonable verification, contradicts the listing, pressures you to pay urgently or insists on an off-platform or hard-to-recover payment method.
- Do not treat these as proof by themselves: seller feedback, a receipt, a sealed box, a marketplace badge, GPU-Z output or a benchmark screenshot.
- Buy only with a workable remedy if you cannot inspect the card first. Know how to open a case and how long you have before paying.
Think of the decision as several checks that should agree: the price is plausible relative to current alternatives, the listing describes the actual card and condition, the seller can answer reasonable questions, the physical and reported hardware fit the model claim, and the payment route preserves a remedy. If one element is uncertain, pause and resolve it. If the seller’s response creates more contradictions or asks you to give up platform protections, walking away is safer than treating a bargain as proof that the risks are worth taking.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell if a graphics card listing is fake?
No single clue proves that a listing is fraudulent. Compare the asking price with multiple current references and a new equivalent; read the full description for “box only,” “picture,” “parts” or conflicting condition language; ask for photos of the actual card; and confirm that payment and messaging stay on-platform with a usable remedy. Treat unresolved contradictions as a reason to pause.
Can GPU-Z tell me if my graphics card is counterfeit?
GPU-Z can help document the GPU name, memory and bus/interface information reported by the installed card, and NVIDIA’s instructions describe saving the video BIOS ROM through the “BIOS Version” field. Compare that information with the exact model claim. It is a useful check, not a certificate of authenticity; a manipulated BIOS or physical substitution may require deeper inspection or professional diagnosis.
What should I do if the GPU I bought is not the model advertised?
Document the package and card, save the listing and seller messages, record GPU-Z information and the video BIOS where possible, and note any test results. Open the marketplace case promptly within its applicable deadline and use the official process rather than an off-platform arrangement. If you paid by credit card, contact the issuer promptly and follow its dispute instructions.
Can a seller’s receipt prove that a used GPU is genuine?
A receipt may help document where a card came from, but it does not establish that the card in the listing—or the one eventually shipped—is the same hardware. Compare the physical card and reported hardware with the claim, and keep the receipt as supporting transaction evidence.
Is it safer to buy a GPU in person instead of having it shipped?
An in-person purchase can make it possible to inspect the actual card before paying, but inspection alone does not prove authenticity or provide a remedy if a problem appears later. Consider whether you can test it, document the transaction and get clear terms before handing over money.
What if the seller asks me to close a marketplace case before refunding me?
Keep the resolution within the marketplace’s official process and do not close or withdraw a case just because of an informal promise. Follow the platform’s instructions and retain the seller’s messages so the agreed remedy and timing are documented.
Can a GPU pass a benchmark and still be the wrong model?
A benchmark can show that some hardware ran a workload, but it does not by itself prove the card is the model advertised or that the tested card is the one shipped. Compare the delivered card’s physical and reported hardware with the listing and keep the test results as only one part of your evidence.
The Bottom Line
Before buying a marketplace GPU, make the listing, actual-card evidence, reported hardware and transaction terms agree. A low price or a convincing label is not proof either way. Keep payment and messages on-platform, save the listing, and test the card promptly after delivery so you can act within the applicable return or dispute window.
