Managed Hermes handles backups automatically: it creates one backup each day and keeps the seven most recent days. To manage those copies, open Hermes, choose Manage beside the application, and open Backups. From there, Restore and download lets you save a dated archive or replace the live application with that snapshot, while Restore history records previous attempts. Download a copy before restoring if you may need the current state, because a restore replaces the application’s current files and cannot be undone.
Where are Managed Hermes backups?
Backups are managed inside the application’s Hermes control area rather than from the application itself. The Backups page is the single place to request a download, start a restoration, and inspect earlier restore operations.

- Sign in to the control panel that contains your Managed Hermes service.
- Select Hermes in the left sidebar.
- Click Manage beside the application you need to protect or recover.
- Open Backups.
The page presents two tabs: Restore and download for working with dated backup points, and Restore history for auditing requests that have already been submitted.
How often does Managed Hermes create backups, and how long are they kept?
The service creates backups automatically once per day and retains them for seven days. You do not start the daily job manually. The first backup appears only after the service has been active long enough for that first automated cycle to complete, so a newly created application may show no backup during its first 24 hours.

What the seven-day window means
- At any time, the available restore points cover the most recent seven-day retention window.
- Older points roll out as new daily backups are created.
- A backup date identifies the saved application state, not the moment you clicked a restore or download control.
- If you need a copy beyond that window, request a download and store the resulting archive independently.
Because retention is limited, do not wait until an issue is several weeks old before checking the Backups page. A point that has aged out cannot be selected through the normal seven-day list.
How do I download a Managed Hermes backup?
Downloading creates a local copy without changing the running application. It is the safer action when you want an archive for records, migration planning, investigation, or a fallback before trying a restore.
- Go to Hermes in the sidebar.
- Choose Manage for the relevant application.
- Select Backups, then stay on Restore and download.
- Choose the dated backup you want to preserve.
- Click Download backup.
- Wait for the archive to be prepared, then use the temporary download link provided by the control panel.
Preparation occurs in the background and can take up to an hour for larger applications. A request that appears to be waiting is not necessarily failed; allow the preparation period before submitting another request.
How temporary download links work
The link is temporary and expires. If it has expired before you save the file, return to the same backup entry and request Download backup again to generate a new link. Treat the downloaded archive as your responsibility: place it in storage you control, label it with the backup date, and verify that the file finished downloading before deleting or moving the only copy.
Where should I store a downloaded copy?
You can keep the archive on your computer or copy it to a separate storage device. A portable external hard drive is one optional physical destination for the downloaded file; it is not part of the Managed Hermes backup system. Keep the device disconnected when it is not being used if you want protection from accidental deletion or a problem affecting the computer that normally holds the archive.
How do I restore an earlier Managed Hermes state?
A restore changes the live application. It returns the application to the exact state captured in the selected dated backup, replacing the application files that exist now.

- Open Hermes, select Manage beside the application, and choose Backups.
- On Restore and download, review the available dates, which are listed newest first.
- Select the date that contains the state you want.
- Click Restore application.
- Read the confirmation warning and acknowledge that the current files will be replaced.
- Click Restore to submit the operation.
Only one restore can run at a time. The application restarts as part of the process, and a normal operation takes about five minutes. Do not submit another restore while the first one is still running; use Restore history to determine whether the request is still active or has finished.
Why you should download first
Restoration is not an in-place preview and it has no undo command. Once the selected snapshot replaces the current files, the state that was present immediately before the restore is not recoverable through an undo button. If that current state might matter, download the newest available backup before starting the restore. The download gives you a separate copy that can be retained even if the restore produces an unexpected result.
What exactly changes when I restore?
The selected backup is applied as a complete application state. Current application files are replaced rather than merged with the older files. This means a file created after the chosen backup date will not remain merely because it is newer, and a file deleted before that backup date will not reappear unless it existed in the saved snapshot.
- Scope: the application files represented by the selected backup.
- Direction: the live application moves backward to the saved state; the backup itself is not edited.
- Reversibility: the operation cannot be undone from Managed Hermes.
- Availability: the application restarts while the restore is performed.
- Concurrency: one restore operation is allowed at a time.
A restore is therefore appropriate for recovering from a known bad change or returning to a specific earlier configuration, not for selectively retrieving one file while leaving every other current file untouched. If you only need an archive for inspection, choose download instead.

Open the Restore history tab after submitting a request. Each entry records the request timestamp, the backup date that was selected, and an operation status.
| Status | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| In progress | The restore request is still running. | Wait; do not start another restore. Check the entry again after the application has had time to restart. |
| Completed | The selected backup was applied. | Open the application and confirm the expected files and behavior from that dated state. |
| Failed | The requested operation did not complete. | Record the timestamp and selected date, then retry only after confirming that no other restore is in progress. |
The history is useful when more than one person manages an application: it distinguishes a request that is still processing from one that completed, and it shows which backup date was actually chosen.

Should I download or restore a backup?
Choose based on whether you need a separate copy or a change to the live application. The two controls may appear beside the same dated backup, but they have different consequences.
| Decision point | Download backup | Restore application |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Keep a local archive for later use or examination. | Return the running application to a saved state. |
| Effect on live files | No change. | Current application files are replaced. |
| Reversibility | The live application is unaffected; you can retain or delete the archive separately. | Cannot be undone in Managed Hermes. |
| Typical timing | Archive preparation may take up to one hour for larger applications, followed by the download. | The application restarts; a normal restore takes about five minutes. |
| Risk | Low operational risk, but the temporary link can expire and the downloaded file can be lost if it is not stored safely. | High operational impact because newer work can be replaced. |
| Best first step before recovery | Use this to preserve the current or selected state. | Start only after preserving any state you may need. |
What should I do if no backup appears?
For a new service, first check how long it has been active. The first automated backup is not available until the initial daily cycle completes, which can require at least 24 hours. If the service has been active beyond that period, return to the Backups page and check the application selected in the Manage list.
- Confirm that you opened the intended application, not another Hermes application in the same account.
- Refresh the Backups page after the expected daily cycle has passed.
- Look for dates within the seven-day retention window; an older date may no longer be listed.
- If a restore request is already running, wait for its history entry to reach a final status before attempting another operation.
A missing first point during the initial 24-hour period is expected behavior, not evidence that the service failed to enable backups.
How can I choose the right backup date?
Start with the newest point that predates the problem, then compare it with earlier dates only if the issue was already present. The list is ordered newest first, so begin at the top and work backward rather than selecting a date at random.
A practical date-selection checklist
- Write down when the unwanted change, deletion, or breakage was first noticed.
- Identify the latest backup created before that event.
- Check whether the application was already in a problematic state at that date by reviewing any available records or downloaded copies.
- If uncertainty remains, download the candidate backup for inspection before restoring it.
- Preserve the current state with a download, then restore only after you have accepted the replacement risk.
The service stores snapshots, not a continuous timeline. A daily backup may fall before or after the exact moment of a change, so the closest date is not automatically the correct one.
What happens if I delete the application?
Deleting the application is permanent. The deletion removes the application, so download a backup copy before confirming that action if you may need the files later. Deleting the application is separate from cancelling the Managed Hermes subscription; removing the application does not cancel that subscription.

This distinction matters when cleaning up test applications. If the goal is only to stop using an application while preserving its data, download an archive first and handle subscription changes through the account’s separate billing controls.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I build a safe backup routine?
The automatic daily schedule reduces routine work, but safe recovery still depends on decisions you make before an incident. Use the following routine whenever an application is important enough that losing its current state would be costly.
- Verify availability: after activation, wait for the first daily backup and confirm that a dated point appears.
- Review the window: check periodically that recent dates are present and understand that only seven days are retained.
- Export milestones: download a copy before a major change, migration, or deletion.
- Label archives: include the application name, backup date, and reason for the export in your local filename or storage notes.
- Protect the copy: keep the archive in storage separate from the device used to administer the application.
- Test the decision: when an incident occurs, determine whether you need a download for investigation or a restore for immediate rollback.
- Audit completion: after a restore request, check Restore history for Completed before treating the rollback as finished.
This routine separates preservation from recovery. You can investigate a downloaded archive without touching the live service, then perform an irreversible restore only when the target date is clear.
What are the common backup-management mistakes?
Restoring before preserving the current state
The most consequential mistake is clicking Restore application without downloading a copy of the current state. Because replacement cannot be undone, preserve first whenever the current files could contain useful work.

Large applications may need up to an hour for archive preparation. Repeatedly requesting the same download while preparation is running can create confusion. Wait for the link, and request a new one only if the temporary link expires.
Using a date outside the retention window
Managed Hermes retains seven days, not an unlimited history. Export important milestones while they are available instead of expecting an older date to remain selectable.

The documented restore action applies the selected application backup as a whole; it is not described as a single-file restore tool. If you need to inspect or extract one item without changing the live application, download the backup archive and work from that local copy. A full restore should be reserved for cases where returning the application to the captured state is acceptable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I restore a backup from more than seven days ago?
No. Managed Hermes retains the automatic daily points for seven days. To keep a point longer, download its archive while it is still listed and store that copy independently.
How long does a Managed Hermes backup download take?
The archive is prepared in the background, and larger applications may take up to an hour before a download link is ready. The link is temporary, so request the download again if it expires.
Will restoring delete files I created after the backup date?
A restore replaces the current application files with those in the selected snapshot. Files that exist only in the newer live state are therefore not retained by the restore; download a copy first if they matter.
