To build a game franchise that can last, make the first release satisfying on its own while giving players a recognizable reason to care about another game: a distinctive kind of play, a world, or both. Then validate that promise with players, secure the rights needed to continue it, and use post-launch evidence—not a roadmap or a wishlist target—to decide whether an update, expansion, or sequel is the right next step.
A sequel is not proof that a franchise is working; it is a new creative and business decision. Valve describes a franchise as related games that share a universe, gameplay style, or intellectual property, so one release can establish the foundation but is not yet a multi-game franchise. The Steam examples below concern worldwide PC publishing and are not universal console or mobile rules. IP guidance is general information, not jurisdiction-specific legal advice.

What makes a game franchise worth continuing?
A durable franchise has a repeatable identity and room for meaningful change. Players should be able to recognize what connects the games, but the next release should offer a new experience rather than merely extend the first one. Valve’s Steam documentation allows related games to share a fictional universe, gameplay style, or intellectual property; it does not require every entry to follow the same protagonist or plot. Steamworks: Franchise Pages
That distinction matters at the design stage. A series need not depend on a cliffhanger, an unfinished ending, or a promise that another game is coming. Those devices may create anticipation, but they can also make the first release feel incomplete. Instead, define what should remain recognizable—perhaps the central player activity, a world with room for other stories, or a particular blend of mechanics—and what may change between entries.

There is no verified universal success rate for original games becoming successful franchises. The World Intellectual Property Organization reported that 11.6%–14.6% of new video games, excluding sequels, were based on prior intellectual property; its 2024 report draws on MobyGames data from 1950–2018. That is a historical estimate of adaptations, not the odds that a new game will become a successful franchise. WIPO, World Intellectual Property Report 2024
How do I design a franchise promise without weakening the first game?
Write down what another entry would preserve, then check that the first game still feels complete if no sequel is made. This is a planning exercise, not a formula that predicts sales.
1. Write one sentence that describes the repeatable identity
Try a sentence such as: “Players explore a dangerous world by combining careful preparation with improvisation.” Keep it specific enough to guide design decisions, but broad enough that a later game could change its setting, cast, or progression. The sentence is useful only if it helps the team make choices; “a rich world with exciting gameplay” is too vague to distinguish the game.
2. Separate essentials from flexible elements
Make two lists before building a large content pipeline:
- Core identity: the player activity, tone, world rules, or other elements that would make a related game recognizable.
- Flexible elements: protagonist, location, narrative structure, progression, visual treatment, or genre variant that could change without losing the core.
Not every item needs to be fixed forever. The point is to keep a future game from inheriting every production constraint simply because it appeared in the first one.
3. Check that a second idea would be distinct
Outline a possible next entry without treating it as a commitment. What would players do that they did not do in the first game? What new problem, system, or perspective would justify another release? If the only answer is “more of the same,” the concept may be better served by updates or an expansion. If the answer requires the first game’s story to remain unresolved, reconsider whether the first release stands alone.

How can I tell whether the first game’s core experience works?
Build a playable slice and observe whether players understand its premise and find the intended activity compelling. A concept document, technical demo, or future-content plan cannot establish that the released game will deliver a satisfying experience.
Test the playable loop, not just the pitch
Give players a portion that includes the decisions and actions central to the full game. Notice where they become engaged, where they get confused, and whether they understand what the game is asking them to do. Record recurring points of delight and friction, then use them to revise the game. A reaction to a trailer or store description may indicate interest, but it is not the same evidence as playing the core loop.
Steam Playtest can provide controlled access to a game through a separate, associated app. It can help a team gather feedback without treating the test build as the retail release. A demo is different: it gives prospective buyers a free, smaller playable portion of the full game. Valve says a demo’s quality and timing matter and that whether to offer one depends on the game. Neither a Playtest nor a demo guarantees sales. Steamworks: Steam Playtest · Steamworks: Demos
Choose the right state for the game
- Private or controlled testing: use this while the central loop or premise still needs validation.
- Demo: consider this when a polished sample can help a prospective buyer understand the full game.
- Early Access: consider it only when a playable product exists and player feedback can materially affect development.
Valve cautions that Early Access is not crowdfunding, a pre-purchase, or a way to sell uncertain promises about future features. Its guidance is direct: “Don’t launch in Early Access without a playable game.” Describe what exists now accurately, not only what the team hopes to build. Steamworks: Early Access

Do I need to own the IP to make a sequel?
You need the rights required to continue the parts of the game you plan to reuse, and you should verify those rights rather than infer them from a store-page credit or a studio’s role in development. A sequel may depend on more than a series name: code, art, music, characters, story elements, or licensed material can each raise separate questions.
Inventory the rights before production decisions harden
List the franchise name and logo, source code, visual assets, music and sound, characters, story, setting, and any third-party material. For each item, identify who owns it, what agreement governs it, and whether the studio can use it in a sequel, expansion, port, adaptation, or merchandise. Include work created by contractors and collaborators; do not assume that payment alone settles ownership or reuse rights.

WIPO explains that trademarks protect names associated with a game, while copyright protects expressive elements. Using or adapting someone else’s work requires appropriate permission. A publisher, contractor, or license agreement may affect who owns or can exploit particular rights, so review the actual contracts before treating a sequel as an option the studio controls. Consult qualified counsel about a specific agreement and jurisdiction. WIPO, World Intellectual Property Report 2024
Make continuity a contract question, not an assumption
Ask specifically whether the studio can reuse the game’s name, characters, setting, code, and other necessary assets in future works, and whether any licensed components expire or require renewed permission. The right answer depends on the agreements and applicable law; there is no universal clause or ownership arrangement that can be assumed from the fact that a game was developed or published.
How do I build interest before release without mistaking it for demand?
Use a Coming Soon store page, announcements, playtests, and demos to learn what attracts attention and what players understand. Treat wishlists as one signal of interest—not a sales forecast or a universal threshold for greenlighting a sequel.
Steam’s wishlist reporting can show regional and time-series information, and wishlists may lead to notifications or personalized exposure. However, Valve says there is no reliable universal formula that converts wishlist counts into sales, and wishlists mostly are not a direct factor in algorithmic visibility. A target number therefore cannot prove that a sequel will sell or that the first game has earned another release. Steamworks: Wishlists
Use the signals for narrower questions. Does the store proposition attract the audience the team intended? Does feedback reveal confusion about the game’s premise? Do players return to the playable experience and engage with the parts that distinguish it? Those questions can improve the first game’s positioning and design, but answering them does not remove the need to understand costs, rights, and post-launch support.
What should the studio do after launch?
Support the first game before asking players to buy another one. Prioritize fixes, accessibility, and quality-of-life work, then add content when there is a clear reason players would value it. A roadmap can communicate intentions, but it is not a substitute for delivery.

Make update plans credible
Steam offers an optional store-page roadmap for communicating development intentions. Valve advises keeping it as accurate as possible. Publish work the team can plausibly deliver, make changes clear when priorities shift, and avoid using a long feature list to imply that every item is guaranteed. Steam’s update documentation describes tools for communicating updates to players. Steamworks: Updating Your Game
For Steam products, Valve documents five initial update visibility rounds per product. Each can last up to 30 days or until one million homepage impressions, and the rounds are shared between Early Access and full release. These are platform limits, not a promise of impressions or a performance forecast for any particular game. Reserve them for substantial updates rather than treating every minor patch as a major promotional moment. Steamworks: Update Visibility Rounds
Choose paid content carefully
Steam supports free and paid downloadable content, including expansions, maps, and characters. Paid DLC may be appropriate when it offers a distinct, optional addition; it can be a poor fit if players feel content was held back from the base game. Valve warns that day-one DLC may create that impression. Make the first game’s value clear, and explain how any paid addition differs from what owners already receive. Steamworks: Updating Your Game
Should I make an update, DLC, or a sequel?
Choose the format that solves the current problem. An update improves or extends the existing release, an expansion adds substantial optional content to it, and a standalone sequel creates a separate game. Steam provides DLC and franchise-page features, but the platform does not prescribe which format a studio should choose.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Option | Best fit when | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Update | The existing game needs fixes, accessibility improvements, quality-of-life work, or a meaningful addition that belongs in the current release. | Can the team deliver the change sustainably, and will it improve the experience players already bought? |
| Paid expansion or DLC | Players can benefit from a distinct optional addition—such as a larger content package, map, or character—without needing a separate game. | Does the addition justify a separate purchase, and is it clearly distinct from content that should be part of the base game? |
| Standalone sequel | The next concept offers a sufficiently different experience and the studio has the rights, production capacity, and player evidence to support a new release. | What makes it new, what remains recognizable, and does the first game still feel complete? |
Compare the alternatives against the same practical criteria: the new experience for players, development and ongoing support costs, effects on existing owners, rights and licensed dependencies, discoverability, and whether the first game remains a complete work. A familiar logo by itself is not a reason to make a sequel. If the game is suited to player-created content and the studio can support integration, Steam Workshop is another possible route; it is an option, not a requirement for a lasting franchise. Steamworks: Franchise Pages
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should we greenlight a second game?
Greenlight a sequel when the studio can explain why it should exist and can support the decision with project-specific evidence. There is no universal wishlist, player-count, or sales threshold established here; the relevant threshold depends on the game’s economics, support needs, rights, and the team’s capacity.

Review evidence from the first release
- Player response: what players value, where they disengage, and whether the distinctive parts of the game are also the parts they want more of.
- Product health: what fixes or support remain necessary, and whether the team can maintain the current release alongside a new project.
- Commercial fit: whether the project’s actual costs, revenue, and future budget support another production. Wishlist counts alone cannot answer this.
- Creative case: what new experience the next game would offer, beyond using the same name or world.
- Rights and capacity: whether the studio can reuse essential IP and has the people and time to develop and support the next release.
Then compare the sequel with the alternatives. If the strongest player need is a fix, make the fix. If players want a substantial addition that belongs inside the same game, an expansion may fit. If the team has a distinct playable idea, the resources to make it, and secure rights to its essential elements, a standalone follow-up may be justified. The decision should follow the evidence available for that project, not an industry-wide rule of thumb.
How can Steam connect games once a series exists?
When a studio has two or more related games, Steam’s franchise-page feature can connect them and let followers hear about releases. That makes the page a way to organize an existing multi-game identity, not a substitute for creating a second game players want. Steamworks: Franchise Pages

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I build a game around a licensed character or fictional world and still make sequels?
Possibly, but the license must cover the uses the studio intends to make, including follow-up games and any relevant characters, settings, or other material. Check the license’s scope, term, territory, and approval requirements with qualified counsel before committing to a series plan.
What should a sequel-rights review include if a publisher is involved?
Review the signed publishing, development, contractor, and license agreements—not just the public credits. Identify who controls future development and exploitation rights, which assets can be reused, and whether approvals or renewed permissions apply.
Can a game franchise include different kinds of games?
Yes, provided there is a meaningful connection players can recognize, such as a shared universe, gameplay style, or intellectual property. Explain that connection clearly so a change in format or focus does not make the relationship between entries confusing.
