For those older iPhones, you can choose between charging on a MagSafe pad and plugging in a Lightning cable. iPhone 15 and later use USB-C, not Lightning. Which method charges faster depends on the exact iPhone and accessories; Apple’s published peak rates and charge-time claims are not a universal, like-for-like comparison.
What MagSafe and Lightning mean
A MagSafe Charger connects to a power adapter at its USB-C end and charges a compatible iPhone wirelessly. Magnets align the charger with supported iPhones, including some models that still have a Lightning port. Lightning, by contrast, is the phone-side connector for a wired cable on iPhone 14 and earlier. iPhone 15 and later use USB-C, as Apple explains in its USB-C connector guidance.

So the practical comparison for a Lightning-era iPhone is MagSafe wireless charging versus wired Lightning charging—not MagSafe versus a Lightning charging standard. A MagSafe pad can also charge some non-MagSafe, Qi-compatible devices, but compatibility does not provide magnetic attachment or the same charging performance.
Which charges faster?
There is no single speed winner for every iPhone. MagSafe’s maximum depends on the iPhone, MagSafe Charger generation and power adapter. Wired fast charging also depends on the iPhone and the cable and adapter used. Apple’s published MagSafe power ceilings and wired charge-time figures describe different setups, so they should not be treated as a direct head-to-head test.

MagSafe charging limits
Apple’s October 1, 2026 guidance lists up to 25W peak wireless power for specified newer iPhone models when paired with MagSafe Charger A3502, A3503, A2580 or A3250 and a USB-C adapter rated at least 30W and 15V/2.0A. That is a peak delivery figure, not a promise that the phone continuously receives 25W. Apple lists up to 20W peak for iPhone Air and up to 22.5W for iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro under the applicable guidance. Apple notes that delivered power varies with iPhone model, adapter wattage and system conditions.
For iPhone 17e, iPhone 15 and earlier, Apple lists up to 15W with its A2140 MagSafe Charger and a qualifying USB-C adapter rated at least 20W. iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini have a lower listed ceiling of up to 12W with an adapter providing at least 9V/2.03A. Check Apple’s MagSafe Charger compatibility and setup guidance for the specified combinations.

Wired charging limits
For wired fast charging, Apple says iPhone 15 and later use a USB-C cable, while earlier iPhones can use a USB-C-to-Lightning cable with a USB-C Power Delivery adapter. A 20W-or-higher USB-C adapter is an option for faster charging, though Apple’s latest model-specific fast-charge claims may require more power. A higher-rated adapter does not force an iPhone to draw its full rated wattage.

Apple gives separate around-20-minute claims for iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max with an adapter rated 40W or higher, and around-30-minute claims for iPhone 17e and iPhone Air with 20W or higher. These are model-specific figures from Apple’s named arrangements, not expectations for Lightning-era iPhones. Apple says actual charging time varies with the adapter, settings, use and environmental conditions; its 2026 iPhone 18 Pro testing notes refer to preproduction phones and software.

Apple’s fast-charge guidance does not provide a complete independent comparison of MagSafe and wired Lightning charging across every relevant iPhone under identical conditions. It is therefore not accurate to say wireless is always slower—or that MagSafe is always faster—without specifying the phone and charging setup.

| What matters to you | MagSafe | Wired charging |
|---|---|---|
| How you connect | Place the phone on the charger; magnets align supported models. | Plug the appropriate cable into the phone. |
| Phone-side port | Can charge supported Lightning-era iPhones without using their Lightning port. | Lightning cable for iPhone 14 and earlier; USB-C cable for iPhone 15 and later. |
| Use while charging | Easy to pick up and reposition while charging, though the charger remains connected to a power source. | The cable stays plugged into the phone while it charges. |
| Accessory dependency | Full performance depends on the iPhone, MagSafe Charger model and suitable adapter; a compatible case or sleeve may be used. | Fast charging depends on the model-appropriate cable and a compatible USB-C Power Delivery adapter. |
If an iPhone is connected to both a MagSafe Charger and wired power, Apple says it charges through the Lightning or USB-C connector. MagSafe therefore does not take priority over a connected cable.

Compatibility and safe use
- Check the iPhone model. iPhone 14 and earlier have Lightning; iPhone 15 and later use USB-C. MagSafe availability and maximum charging power vary by model.
- Match the MagSafe accessories. For the maximum listed rate, use the MagSafe Charger part number and adapter conditions Apple specifies for that phone. A MagSafe pad still needs a suitable power source.
- Know what Qi compatibility does—and does not—mean. A non-MagSafe Qi-compatible iPhone can charge on the MagSafe pad, but Apple warns that power and charge times differ. The phone does not gain magnetic attachment simply from using the pad.
- Keep sensitive items away from the charging area. Apple warns that magnetic strips or RFID chips in cards, security badges, passports or key fobs may be damaged if placed between the phone and charger.
- Expect heat-related limits. The phone or charger may become warm. If the iPhone gets too warm, software may limit charging above 80% until conditions improve.
How to choose for your iPhone
- Identify the model and port. Confirm whether it is iPhone 14 or earlier (Lightning) or iPhone 15 or later (USB-C), then check whether its model supports MagSafe.
- Choose based on how you charge. Pick MagSafe if magnetic alignment and cable-free placement are useful; choose wired charging if you prefer plugging in or want to use the phone while it remains connected by cable.
- Use the correct accessories. For wired fast charging, use USB-C to USB-C with iPhone 15 and later, or USB-C to Lightning with earlier models, plus a compatible USB-C Power Delivery adapter. For MagSafe, follow Apple’s charger-generation and adapter requirements for your model.
- Set expectations by model, not by connector label. Treat Apple’s MagSafe wattage figures as stated peak ceilings and its wired figures as model- and setup-specific charge-time claims. Neither establishes a universal speed ranking.
