There is no verified cross-game winner: Sony and developers have described visual improvements in several PS5 Pro games, but the available statements do not establish which game gains the most in controlled comparisons. The strongest examples to examine are Control and Alan Wake 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Doom: The Dark Ages—each for different reasons, from image stability to fine detail in motion. PSSR is a PS5 Pro feature; Sony’s separately announced QSSR is a lighter AI upscaling tier for the original PS5.
What PS5 AI upscaling and PSSR mean
PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) is Sony’s AI-based image-upscaling library for compatible PS5 Pro games. Sony says it analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them. The aim is to reconstruct a sharper image from a lower-resolution input, rather than simply enlarging every pixel. The resulting image quality depends on the game’s implementation and scene: Sony cautions that “results will vary by title.” Sony’s PS5 Pro feature and support page

“PS5 AI upscaling” is a broad description, not the name of one universal feature shared by every PS5. On PS5 Pro, PSSR is available in titles that support it. A game can receive other PS5 Pro enhancements without using PSSR, and support for PSSR does not by itself mean a game uses the newest PSSR version.

Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as its first announced QSSR games, while describing PSSR as the higher-end experience on PS5 Pro. QSSR is not simply “PSSR on PS5,” and its first-game list may change as Sony announces more titles. Sony’s QSSR announcement

Which games have the clearest reported benefits?
The examples below are supported by statements from Sony or the developers. They show what teams say improved, not independently measured gains or a ranking from best to worst.
| Game | Reported improvement | What the claim establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Control and Alan Wake 2 | Remedy Graphics Technical Director Tatu Aalto says upgraded PSSR improves upscaling quality and stability; he singles out Alan Wake 2 alongside Control for better, more stable image quality on Pro. | A developer’s qualitative assessment; not a measured comparison showing either game beats other PSSR titles. |
| Final Fantasy VII Rebirth | Director Naoki Hamaguchi says fine details such as character hair are restored more naturally, with less flicker and afterimage. | Specific claims about fine detail and image stability from the game’s director. |
| SILENT HILL f | Konami’s production team points to clearer fine detail, including grass and shadows, and a smoother experience following the latest PSSR update. | Developer-reported changes; no cross-game measurement is supplied. |
| Dragon Age: The Veilguard | BioWare Studio Technical Director Maciej Kurowski says updated PSSR meaningfully improves image quality while maintaining stable frame rates in Fidelity and Performance modes. | A developer statement that addresses both image quality and frame-rate stability in those modes. |
| Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II | Ninja Theory Studio Head Dom Matthews says the team was impressed by particle-effect quality with updated PSSR. | A qualitative comment focused on particle effects. |
| Doom: The Dark Ages | id Software’s Director of Engine Technology Billy Khan says details such as snow, chains, sparks, and thin geometry hold together more consistently in motion. Sony says this game’s PSSR support is exclusive to PS5 Pro. | A developer explanation of why reconstruction matters in fast movement and dense combat, not an independent test result. |
| 007 First Light | IO Interactive says upgraded PSSR is enabled by default in the PS5 Pro version and reconstructs a sharper, more stable image from a lower internal resolution. | A recent implementation example, not evidence that it benefits more than the other games listed. |
Remedy’s Tatu Aalto puts its assessment this way: “Control and, especially, Alan Wake 2 benefit from these improvements on the Pro, resulting in better, more stable image quality.” That is a useful reason to include both games among the best-documented examples, but “especially” compares them within Remedy’s statement; it is not a verdict across every PSSR game. Which PS5 Pro games support Enhanced PSSR?
Sony’s PS5 Pro product page currently lists these under “Supported titles with Enhanced PSSR”: Resident Evil Requiem, SILENT HILL f, SILENT HILL 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Alan Wake 2, Control, Monster Hunter Wilds, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Nioh 3, Rise of the Ronin, Crimson Desert, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Cyberpunk 2077. Sony’s February 2026 announcement said PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in over 50 PS5 Pro titles “to date.” Separately, the product page says over 100 PS5 titles are enhanced by PS5 Pro. The figures describe different categories: the first counts titles Sony said used PSSR at that date; the second is the broader PS5 Pro-enhanced catalog, not a count of PSSR-supported or upgraded-PSSR games. How to tell whether PSSR makes a difference in a game
When comparing a title with and without an image-quality change, use the same display and viewing conditions. Look at moving gameplay as well as still images; reconstruction strengths or artifacts may appear differently in motion or effects-heavy scenes. These checks are a practical comparison framework, not a Sony scoring system.
- Fine detail: Look at hair, foliage, thin geometry, textures, and small distant objects.
- Stability in motion: Watch for flicker, shimmer, ghosting, and details that break up during a pan or fast movement.
- Performance trade-off: Check whether the title ties PSSR to Fidelity, Performance, or another graphics mode, and compare frame-rate consistency in that same mode.
- Implementation and settings: Confirm whether the game has received the relevant patch, whether it uses original or upgraded PSSR, and whether an optional PS5 Pro setting is enabled. Sony says “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” applies to PS5 Pro games that support PSSR.
- Scene content: Dense geometry, particles, and fast combat can reveal different results from a quiet still scene.
Do not assume the same mode or setting is best in every game. The available official material does not establish one universally best display, resolution, or graphics-mode choice.
What the evidence can—and cannot—say
Sony and developers describe useful improvements, but their comments are not controlled, independent game-by-game benchmarks. They support a practical shortlist by reported strength: Control and Alan Wake 2 for image quality and stability, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for fine detail and reduced flicker, and Doom: The Dark Ages for detail retention during fast, effects-heavy play. They do not prove those titles gain more than every other supported game.
Sony’s March 2026 update also discussed Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II and announced future patches for Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Cyberpunk 2077. For present-day support, Sony’s current title list is the better reference than a dated rollout announcement. Sony’s March 2026 PSSR update announcement
