Start by searching for a distinctive name or phrase, then check the conversation’s visibility and access rules. “Live chat” can mean a regular Teams conversation or a meeting chat; the steps differ depending on which one you mean.
First, search for the message in Teams
- Use the search field at the top of Teams and enter a participant’s name or a distinctive phrase from the message.
- Choose Messages in the search results, then open a result that looks relevant.
- Refine the results by chat or channel, team or channel, sender, date, mentions, or attachments.
- If you already know the chat or channel, open it and press Ctrl+F on Windows or Command+F on macOS to search within it.
A broad search can miss a message among many results; a specific phrase, sender, or date range can make it easier to narrow down.

Is the one-to-one chat hidden or has its history been removed?
Hiding a chat and removing its history are different actions. A hidden one-to-one chat remains findable and can be unhidden. Removing chat history takes the conversation out of your list and search, so you cannot access it again through search. The other participant still sees it.
Unhide a conversation
- Search for the other person by name.
- Open More options beside the search result and select Unhide.
- If the chat does not appear, search again and choose Show hidden chat history.
A hidden chat and its history remain hidden until someone posts a new message. If you removed the history rather than hiding the chat, unhide steps will not bring that history back to your view.

Why can’t I see a meeting chat or its earlier messages?
Meeting attendance does not always mean access to the same chat history. What you can see depends on the meeting type, how you were invited or joined, and whether you belong to the organizer’s organization. Anonymous attendees do not receive prior chat history. Someone who joined through a forwarded invitation or meeting link may not see messages posted before they joined.
Check for a declined or hard-to-find meeting
Search for the meeting title. If you declined the meeting, enable Show declined events in the calendar to locate the event and its associated chat. The organizer may also have limited meeting chat or turned it off in meeting options.

Why is a team or channel missing?
Check whether you are a member of the team. A private team may not appear in search if its owner has disabled discoverability, and joining a private team requires the owner’s approval. Contact the owner to request access if you are not a member.

Can external-chat settings affect search?
External chat and meeting requests have their own controls: accepting, deleting, or blocking a request affects whether you can participate and what history is available. For chats between organization members and people using personal accounts, organizational policy can also determine whether those chats are searchable. Microsoft’s guidance says the organization must enable these chats for them to be searchable. If the problem appears limited to an external conversation, ask your Teams administrator whether the relevant policy allows it.

Which checks fit the kind of conversation that is missing?

When to contact your Teams administrator
If search, hidden-chat checks, meeting access, and team membership do not explain the problem, ask your organization’s Teams administrator to review the relevant access and policy settings. The cause may depend on your tenant’s configuration or account state; these checks alone cannot establish whether a particular retention or administrator policy is responsible.
