For sharper PS5 games, first check the console’s output resolution, then use Enhance PSSR Image Quality if you have a compatible PS5 Pro and are playing a supported game. For other titles, choose the game’s Resolution or Performance mode based on whether you prefer image quality or smoother motion. No single setting sharpens every game.
Check the PS5’s current output before changing picture settings
Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and read Current Video Output Signal. It shows what the console is sending to the connected display. Sony says the PS5 detects a TV’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution, so Resolution: Automatic is a sensible starting point.

For 4K output, you need a compatible 4K display and the console’s resolution set to Automatic or 2160p. If a compatible 4K TV is not receiving 4K, Sony’s resolution and video-output guide says you can select 2160p manually. This changes the console’s output signal; it does not, by itself, change a game’s internal rendering resolution.
If you use a 1440p display, the same Video Output area offers a 1440p output test that checks SDR and HDR at 60 Hz and 120 Hz, as well as VRR. The test helps establish which signal combinations your display accepts.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Turn on PSSR image quality enhancement—if your console and game support it
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s AI upscaling feature for supported games. On consoles in the CFI-7000 model group, find Enhance PSSR Image Quality at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Sony says the option is on by default and improves image quality in certain PSSR-compatible games.
This is not a universal PS5 setting: it is limited to that model group and to compatible games. If a supported title behaves unexpectedly, you can switch the option off to compare. Sony does not promise a particular improvement size or say that every supported game will look better in every scene.

Choose Resolution or Performance mode for the game you are playing
Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets. If a game offers both presets, the choice is a trade-off rather than a universal “best” setting:
| Preset | Sony’s description | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution Mode | Higher graphic quality | You prefer the game’s higher-quality visual presentation. |
| Performance Mode | Smoother motion | You prefer smoother motion and responsiveness. |
Preset support and implementation vary by game, and some settings may not apply in every title. Compare the available modes in the game you actually play; a console preset cannot create an option the game does not provide.

Use HDR, VRR, and 120 Hz for their specific benefits
These options affect different parts of the viewing experience. HDR concerns high dynamic range, VRR adjusts refresh rate in real time on compatible equipment, and 120 Hz output supports higher refresh rates when the display and game allow it. None is a general-purpose sharpness switch.
- HDR: Under Video Output, Always On converts non-HDR games and apps to HDR output. On When Supported leaves unsupported content in SDR. Use Adjust HDR to tune brightness for your display rather than relying on universal brightness numbers.
- VRR: It requires a compatible TV and game, and Sony notes results vary by TV. If Apply to Unsupported Games causes unexpected behavior, turn that option off.
- 120 Hz Output: Enable it when both your display and the game support 120 Hz. If enabling it causes output problems, turn it off and troubleshoot the signal path.
Troubleshoot a missing or unstable 4K/120 Hz picture
If 4K/120 Hz is unavailable or the picture flickers, check the display and HDMI chain before changing picture-quality settings. Sony notes that compatibility issues may occur in the market. Work through these checks:

- Confirm that the display supports 4K at 120 Hz and install its current firmware.
- Use the HDMI cable included with the PS5 or a cable rated for 4K/120 Hz, such as an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
- Connect the console to a suitable HDMI port on the TV. If an intermediary receiver or switch may be involved, connect directly to the TV to isolate it.
- Check the TV’s enhanced-format setting for that HDMI port, if one is required by the TV.
- On the PS5, check Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output; leave Resolution on Automatic or select 2160p for a compatible 4K display, and leave Video Transfer Rate on Auto unless flicker calls for a troubleshooting change.
If flicker persists, Sony suggests testing Video Transfer Rate: -1 or -2. These settings can stabilize a signal by limiting output formats, so they are not image-enhancement options:

Correct cropping or a mismatched RGB range only when you see that problem
If the image is cropped or has black borders, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Screen > Adjust Display Area. This changes framing, not game detail.
Leave RGB Range alone unless the connected HDMI device is sending range information incorrectly. Sony recommends changing it only in that situation; it is not a general sharpness tweak.
