To install Magento (Adobe Commerce) on Ubuntu Linux with Apache and Cloudflare, first select the exact Magento 2.4.x patch, then install the PHP, database, search, queue and cache versions that patch supports. Configure Apache to serve Magento’s pub directory, install a certificate on the origin, set Magento’s secure URLs, and proxy the web DNS records through Cloudflare. Use Cloudflare Full (strict) only after the origin certificate is valid and matches the hostname; this prevents the redirect loops and 526 errors that result from mismatched TLS settings.

The procedure below uses shop.example.com as the origin hostname. Replace it with your real name, and treat every version example as patch-specific rather than a universal Magento requirement.

What must be decided before installing Magento?

Magento’s dependency matrix changes between patch releases. Write the complete target release at the top of your deployment notes before installing Ubuntu packages. For example, Adobe’s current tables show that Magento/Adobe Commerce 2.4.8-p5 supports PHP 8.3 or 8.4, Composer 2.10, MariaDB 11.4 or 11.8, OpenSearch 3, RabbitMQ 4.3 and Valkey 8.1. Magento 2.4.7-p10 has a different combination of supported PHP, database and search versions. Those examples are not interchangeable.

Decision What to record Why it matters
Magento release Exact 2.4.x patch, including the -p suffix Support for PHP, database, search, queue and cache services changes by patch.
Ubuntu Ubuntu release and x86-64 architecture Package names, repositories and vendor support depend on the operating-system release.
Origin name shop.example.com (one canonical hostname) The Apache virtual host, certificate, Magento base URLs and Cloudflare record must agree.
TLS design Publicly trusted certificate or Cloudflare Origin CA certificate Origin CA is appropriate only while every visitor connection remains proxied through Cloudflare.

Ubuntu is a supported Linux x86-64 platform, but Magento is not just an Apache package. The server also needs the selected release’s PHP extensions, Composer, a supported MySQL-compatible database, OpenSearch or Elasticsearch where applicable, RabbitMQ, Redis or Valkey, cron and the system tools Adobe lists, including bash, gzip, lsof, mysql, mysqldump, nice, php, sed and tar.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How much RAM and disk does an Ubuntu Magento server need?

Choose capacity for the catalog, indexes, media library and deployment process rather than for the empty application. Adobe warns that an upgrade can require up to 2 GB of RAM and recommends a swap file when available memory is below that level. Leave additional disk space for database growth, generated code, logs, backups and product images. Keep var, generated files and media on persistent storage; do not place them on an ephemeral volume.

  • Create a non-root administrative account with sudo; use root only for tasks that require it.
  • Synchronize the server clock. Correct time is important for TLS validation, cron, session expiry and signed requests.
  • Restrict the origin firewall to SSH administration and the web traffic required by your design. If you allow HTTP and HTTPS only from Cloudflare, obtain the current Cloudflare IP ranges from Cloudflare’s official list before creating the rules.
  • Plan backups for both the database and the Magento filesystem, and test restoration before launch.

How do I prepare Ubuntu for Magento?

Log in through your administrative account, update the operating system, set the hostname and confirm that the server has the expected architecture and time. The exact package versions come from the matrix for your chosen patch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update package metadata and security updates. Run sudo apt-get update, followed by the distribution’s normal upgrade command. Reboot if the kernel or another package requires it.
  2. Set the canonical hostname. Configure the system hostname to match your operational naming convention, then verify it with hostnamectl. The public name used by customers remains shop.example.com.
  3. Check memory, storage and time. Use free -h, df -h and timedatectl. Create and activate swap when the machine has less than the memory required by your installation or upgrade workload.
  4. Install the command-line foundation. Add the tools required by Adobe and any utilities needed to administer your selected database, search service and message broker.

Do not install “latest” PHP, MariaDB, OpenSearch, RabbitMQ or Valkey blindly. Pin each repository or package family to a version supported by the exact Magento patch, and record the package versions so a later upgrade can be planned rather than improvised.

Which PHP, database, search, queue and cache versions should I install?

Use Adobe’s system-requirements table for the exact patch and Ubuntu release. A working combination for one patch can be rejected by Composer or fail during indexing on another. Install PHP with every extension named for that release, then install the matching Composer major and minor version, database server, search engine, RabbitMQ and Redis or Valkey service.

Component Patch-specific example Installation rule
PHP 2.4.8-p5 lists PHP 8.3/8.4; 2.4.7-p10 lists PHP 8.2/8.3 Use only a PHP version and extension set listed for your patch.
Composer 2.4.8-p5 lists Composer 2.10 Install the Composer version required by the matrix and authenticate it to Adobe’s repository.
Database 2.4.8-p5 lists MariaDB 11.4/11.8 among its supported choices Use the exact MySQL or MariaDB family and version range documented for the release.
Search 2.4.8-p5 lists OpenSearch 3 Configure the supported OpenSearch or Elasticsearch release before running setup.
Queue and cache 2.4.8-p5 lists RabbitMQ 4.3 and Valkey 8.1 Match the broker and cache versions and configure them as services that start after reboot.

How do I install and configure Apache for Magento?

Adobe’s Ubuntu procedure installs or upgrades the apache2 package with apt-get. Verify that the resulting server is a supported Apache 2.4 release before creating the virtual host.

  1. Run sudo apt-get update, then install or upgrade Apache with sudo apt-get install apache2.
  2. Confirm the version with apache2ctl -v and make sure it is within the version range supported by your Magento patch.
  3. Enable the Apache modules and PHP integration required by that release. A typical Ubuntu installation uses URL rewriting, TLS and request-header support, but the authoritative module list is the Adobe procedure for your patch.
  4. Create a dedicated virtual host for shop.example.com. Set its DocumentRoot to Magento’s pub directory, not the project root.
  5. Allow the official Magento Apache rules to load by setting AllowOverride only as required by the supported configuration. Avoid broad overrides on unrelated directories.
  6. Test syntax with sudo apache2ctl configtest, enable the site, and reload Apache only after the test reports that the configuration is valid.

The HTTP virtual host can redirect to HTTPS, while the HTTPS virtual host serves the application. The HTTPS host must listen on port 443 and reference a certificate and private key for the exact public hostname.

How should I lay out Magento files and permissions?

Place the code in a dedicated directory owned by your deployment account, and point Apache at the pub subdirectory. The web-server user needs the documented write access to Magento’s runtime, generated and media paths, but the entire project should not be writable by every process.

  • Keep application code, generated code, cache, sessions, logs and media on persistent storage.
  • Use the permission model in Adobe’s installation guidance for your deployment mode; do not solve a write error by making the whole tree world-writable.
  • Keep deployment, backup and log directories outside the public document root.
  • After each deployment, verify ownership and permissions before running compilation, static-content deployment or indexers.

How do I create the Magento database and Composer credentials?

Create a dedicated database and least-privilege database user rather than reusing an administrative database account. Record the database name, username, password, host and port in a protected secret store.

  1. Create the database with the character set and collation required by the selected Magento release.
  2. Create a separate database user, grant it access only to that database, and test the login from the Ubuntu host.
  3. Install Composer and configure authentication for repo.magento.com using credentials supplied by Adobe.
  4. Store Composer credentials outside web-accessible paths and never paste them into shell history, public documentation or a committed repository.

What command installs Magento on Apache?

Run bin/magento setup:install from the Magento project directory after all services are installed and reachable. Substitute your selected values; the command below intentionally uses an example hostname and does not contain real credentials.

bin/magento setup:install
  --base-url=http://shop.example.com/
  --base-url-secure=https://shop.example.com/
  --use-secure=1
  --use-secure-admin=1
  --db-host=127.0.0.1
  --db-name=magento
  --db-user=magento_app
  --db-password='replace-with-a-secret'
  --admin-firstname=Store
  --admin-lastname=Administrator
  [email protected]
  --admin-user=admin
  --admin-password='replace-with-a-long-secret'
  --language=en_US
  --currency=USD
  --timezone=UTC
  --backend-frontname=admin_portal

Use an HTTPS value for --base-url-secure, set --use-secure=1, and set --use-secure-admin=1 when the storefront and Admin are intended to be secure. Choose a non-obvious Admin front name and protect the administrator account with a unique password and your organization’s multifactor controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After installation, run the deployment and indexing commands required by your release, configure cron, and check that the PHP CLI uses the same supported PHP version as Apache. Do not run production maintenance commands as an arbitrary user if that would create files Apache cannot read or write.

How do I enable HTTPS on the Apache origin?

Install origin TLS before switching Cloudflare to strict validation. Adobe states that a valid security certificate is required for HTTPS.

  1. Obtain either a publicly trusted certificate or a Cloudflare Origin CA certificate for shop.example.com and any other names the origin must serve.
  2. Install the certificate and private key with permissions that prevent ordinary users from reading the key.
  3. Configure Apache’s port-443 virtual host, enable the SSL module, and set the certificate paths.
  4. Confirm that the certificate is unexpired and that its name matches the hostname visitors use.
  5. Run sudo apache2ctl configtest, reload Apache, and test the origin directly from an administrative network before enabling strict Cloudflare validation.

Cloudflare Origin CA certificates are trusted by Cloudflare, not by ordinary browsers. They are suitable when all public traffic stays proxied. If a DNS-only record, a maintenance procedure or a firewall exception could send users directly to the origin, use a publicly trusted certificate instead.

How do I put Magento behind Cloudflare?

Cloudflare should sit between visitors and Apache for the web host. A proxied DNS record returns Cloudflare anycast addresses instead of the origin address; a DNS-only record exposes the origin and does not receive Cloudflare’s HTTP/HTTPS proxy protections.

  1. In Cloudflare DNS, add the apex and shop records as A, AAAA or CNAME records that point to the origin.
  2. Set the records serving web traffic to Proxied. Keep email, certificate-validation and ownership-validation records DNS-only.
  3. Confirm that the canonical hostname resolves to Cloudflare addresses from an external network, while the origin remains reachable only through the firewall paths you intentionally allow.
  4. If you restrict port 80 or 443 to Cloudflare, refresh the allowlist from Cloudflare’s official IP-range source whenever it changes.

Do not proxy database, SSH, mail or other non-HTTP services through a normal web DNS record. Keep those services on separate names and access controls.

Which Cloudflare SSL mode prevents Magento redirect loops?

Choose Full (strict) when Apache presents a valid, unexpired certificate whose hostname matches the request. Cloudflare recommends Full (strict) whenever possible. It encrypts both visitor-to-Cloudflare and Cloudflare-to-origin connections and validates the origin certificate.

Mode Origin connection Use with Magento
Full (strict) HTTPS with certificate and hostname validation Preferred when the origin certificate is valid.
Full HTTPS without validating the origin certificate Temporary diagnostic choice only; a malicious party could hijack the unvalidated origin connection.
Flexible HTTP from Cloudflare to the origin Do not use as a workaround for an HTTPS Magento origin or redirect loop.

A 526 error means Cloudflare cannot validate the origin certificate under strict mode. Check the certificate chain, expiration date, hostname, Apache’s selected virtual host and the port Cloudflare is contacting. Fix those conditions instead of downgrading to Flexible.

Why does Magento redirect endlessly after enabling Cloudflare SSL?

A loop occurs when Magento requires HTTPS, Apache or Cloudflare forwards the request as HTTP, and the application redirects it back to HTTPS repeatedly. The three protocol decisions must agree.

  1. Verify Magento’s secure base URL and secure Admin setting. Both should use the canonical https://shop.example.com/ address.
  2. Verify that Apache has a functioning HTTPS virtual host on port 443 and that the HTTP host performs one redirect to it.
  3. Set Cloudflare to Full (strict) when the origin certificate passes validation.
  4. Check that Apache receives and preserves the original HTTPS information from Cloudflare according to the supported Apache configuration. Incorrect proxy-header handling can make an HTTPS request appear to Magento as HTTP.
  5. Clear Magento configuration and page caches after correcting URLs, then retest in a private browser window.

Do not combine an HTTPS Magento base URL, an HTTP-only origin and Flexible mode. That arrangement hides the real certificate or proxy configuration problem and can leave traffic insecure between Cloudflare and Apache.

What should I test before opening the Magento store?

Perform an operational check from outside the origin network and from the server itself. Documentation describes the required configuration; it does not prove that these checks have succeeded on your server.

  • DNS: apex and shop resolve correctly, and web records are proxied.
  • TLS: certificate name, chain and expiry are correct at Cloudflare and at the origin.
  • Redirects: HTTP reaches HTTPS once, with no loop or mixed-content warning.
  • Application: storefront pages, product images, static assets, cart, checkout and Admin login work.
  • Data paths: media upload, generated files, cache flush, indexers and cron complete successfully.
  • Integrations: webhooks and email delivery use the intended DNS records and firewall paths.
  • Operations: Apache, PHP, Magento, queue, search and database logs contain no unexplained 4xx or 5xx responses.

What are the common installation failures and fixes?

Composer refuses a PHP or package version

Recheck the exact patch matrix, installed PHP CLI version and Composer version. Remove unsupported packages only after confirming that an extension or dependency is not required by the selected release.

Apache shows a directory listing or 404

Confirm that the virtual host’s document root ends in pub, URL rewriting is enabled, the intended site is enabled, and the request is reaching the correct Apache host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Magento cannot write generated files or media

Inspect ownership and permissions on the documented runtime, generated and media directories. Correct the web-server user and deployment group rather than applying global write permissions.

Cloudflare returns 526

Inspect the origin certificate’s expiration, hostname, chain and Apache binding. Full (strict) requires all of those conditions; an Origin CA certificate is valid for this path only while traffic remains proxied.

Should I self-manage Magento on Ubuntu or use managed hosting?

A self-managed Ubuntu VPS gives you control over Apache, the operating system, firewall and every dependency, but you own patching, backups, monitoring, TLS renewal and incident response. Managed Magento hosting shifts much of that operations work to a provider; the deciding test is whether it supports your exact Magento patch, Ubuntu image, PHP version, database, search service, queue and cache rather than whether it advertises Magento in general.

Consideration Self-managed Ubuntu VPS Managed Magento hosting
Apache and OS control Full control of packages, modules and firewall Limited to the provider’s supported configuration
Operations You handle updates, backups, monitoring and recovery Provider may handle some or all operational tasks; verify the contract
Version flexibility Possible when the exact patch matrix is followed Depends on the provider’s certified versions
Cloudflare and origin TLS You configure certificates, proxy mode and firewall rules Confirm who owns certificates, DNS and origin access

How should I maintain the installation?

Record the Magento patch, Ubuntu release, PHP extensions, Composer version and every service version. Before a patch upgrade, read the new Adobe matrix, test the dependency changes in a staging environment, back up the database and media, and confirm that the new release still supports your search, queue and cache services.

  • Renew or replace the origin certificate before expiration and retest Full (strict).
  • Review Cloudflare DNS and firewall rules after infrastructure changes.
  • Monitor disk, memory, queue depth, indexer health, cron failures and Apache/PHP error rates.
  • Keep administrative access separate from public web access and rotate database, Composer and Admin secrets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install Magento on Ubuntu without Cloudflare?

Yes. Cloudflare is optional; Apache can serve the store directly when the origin has a publicly trusted certificate and appropriate firewall protection. If you later proxy the hostname, recheck certificate validation, forwarded protocol handling and DNS exposure before switching modes.

Should Magento use Redis or Valkey for sessions?

Use the cache and session service named as supported for your exact Magento patch, then configure it according to Adobe’s deployment guidance. Do not substitute a newer service version merely because the Ubuntu repository offers it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I expose SSH while hiding the Magento origin?

Keep SSH on an administration path restricted by keys, source addresses or a private network. For web ports, allow Cloudflare’s current published ranges if you want Cloudflare-only origin access, and retain a documented break-glass administration route.

What happens if the Cloudflare Origin CA certificate expires?

Cloudflare will fail strict origin validation and visitors can receive a 526 error. Install a replacement certificate on Apache, verify the hostname and chain, reload Apache, and test the origin before changing Cloudflare’s mode.
