Maestro is the better choice for solo players who want to conduct an orchestra with expressive Joy-Con motion. Trombone Champ is the better choice for households and parties because it supports local multiplayer, uses more flexible control options, and leans into absurd comedy. They overlap as rhythm games, but they deliver different fantasies: Maestro is about directing a symphonic performance, while Trombone Champ is about playing a deliberately silly trombone game and collecting surprises.

At a glance
Name Best for Key spec Platforms Checked
Maestro Solo players who want orchestral spectacle and motion controls Two-Joy-Con conducting; four difficulty modes; confirmed physical edition Nintendo Switch, digital and physical editions Oct 2026
Trombone Champ Groups, families and players who prefer comic experimentation Multiple control modes; collectibles; unlockable characters, trombones and sounds Nintendo Switch, digital edition Oct 2026

What is the main difference between Maestro and Trombone Champ?

Maestro asks you to inhabit the role of a conductor, while Trombone Champ asks you to perform songs through a comic trombone-focused rhythm system. The choice is therefore less about a universal “better” game and more about whether you want orchestral role-play or chaotic musical comedy.

Maestro turns the Switch into a conductor’s podium

Maestro is set around the spectacle of leading a symphonic orchestra from a Parisian opera-house setting. Nintendo describes it as an “easy-to-learn hard-to-master” rhythm game: you set tempo, cue sections and shape crescendos in real time. The physical gestures are part of the fantasy, so the game is aimed at players who want to feel like they are directing a performance rather than simply following note prompts.

Its repertoire combines well-known classical works with recognizable film, television and game material. Nintendo specifically names music associated with Star Wars, Game of Thrones, The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Attack on Titan, alongside composers and works connected with Beethoven, Mozart, Wagner, Vivaldi and Duke Ellington.

Trombone Champ makes musical failure part of the joke

Trombone Champ is deliberately irreverent. Its central idea is a trombone rhythm game surrounded by hidden characters, collectible cards and unlockable equipment and sounds. The tone is closer to a party game with a music-game structure than to a simulated concert performance.

That difference matters in practice. Maestro is built around control, timing and the drama of a coordinated ensemble; Trombone Champ encourages experimentation, laughter and repeated runs to discover more of its collection. Neither approach is automatically more accessible or more enjoyable for everyone.

How do the controls differ?

Maestro has the more specific motion-control design. Trombone Champ offers more than one control mode, making it the safer option when a group has different controller preferences or when motion play is not desirable.

Maestro uses one Joy-Con in each hand

Microids describes a two-controller setup. One Joy-Con guides the baton, while the other cues orchestra sections and controls dynamics. Your gestures are therefore split between keeping the performance moving and telling different parts of the ensemble when and how to enter.

This design is the reason to choose Maestro if the physical act of conducting is your priority. It also means you should plan around having two compatible Joy-Con controllers available. The game’s concept is not a conventional single-button rhythm layout presented with a conductor theme; the two-handed setup is central to how the publisher explains play.

Trombone Champ gives you more setup flexibility

Nintendo’s listing identifies multiple control modes for Trombone Champ and does not require one specific motion arrangement. That makes it easier to adapt the game to different players, controller collections and playing environments, although the listing does not establish that one control mode is more accurate or more comfortable than another.

Choose Trombone Champ when flexibility matters more than a carefully defined gesture system. Choose Maestro when having a baton hand and an orchestra-control hand is precisely the appeal.

Which game is better for solo play?

Maestro is the stronger solo recommendation because its entire design centers on a single player’s performance as conductor. The pacing, gestures and orchestral presentation all reinforce that role.

Maestro also provides four difficulty modes, a tutorial, global leaderboards and cosmetic unlocks. The publisher says music knowledge is not required, so you do not need to read a score or understand formal conducting technique before starting. The progression structure gives beginners a way into the concept while leaving room for players who want more demanding timing and coordination.

Trombone Champ can still be played alone and has its own reasons to return: collectible cards, hidden characters, unlockable trombones and trombone sounds. Its solo appeal is more discovery-driven and comedic. If you enjoy finding unusual content and replaying songs with a collection goal, Trombone Champ may hold your attention better than a pure performance fantasy.

Which game is better for two or more players?

Trombone Champ is the clear choice for shared play on one Switch. Nintendo lists support for one to four players locally on a single system.

Maestro is listed as a one-player game on one system. That makes it suitable for taking turns, but it is not the option to buy when the main goal is simultaneous family or party play. A household can still watch, swap performers or compare leaderboard results, but the game’s listed format is solo.

For a group purchase, Trombone Champ’s control variety is also useful: people can choose among the available control modes instead of being asked to adopt Maestro’s two-Joy-Con conducting arrangement. The trade-off is tonal. Group sessions are likely to revolve around Trombone Champ’s jokes, surprises and mistakes rather than Maestro’s sustained orchestral immersion.

How many songs are in Maestro and Trombone Champ?

The officially stated song counts favor Trombone Champ, but the numbers come from different product descriptions and should not be treated as a performance or quality score.

Game Stated catalog What the description covers
Maestro 38 tracks on the physical Nintendo Switch edition Classical works plus recognizable film, television and game material; count stated by Microids for the 2026 physical release
Trombone Champ More than 45 songs An official Nintendo listing describes a mix of anthems, marches, classical pieces, electronic music and folk classics; count attributed to Nintendo, 2023

Song count alone should not decide the purchase. Maestro’s selection is designed to support a conductor’s dramatic repertoire, while Trombone Champ’s larger stated catalog serves a broader, more eclectic and intentionally playful mood. If you have strong preferences about classical, cinematic, electronic or folk material, compare the named styles rather than assuming that a higher number guarantees a better match.

Which game has the better progression and beginner support?

Both games are designed to be approachable, but they reward different kinds of progress. Maestro teaches the conducting concept and then layers difficulty onto performance; Trombone Champ uses collecting and discovery to encourage continued play.

Maestro’s learning curve

  • A tutorial introduces the conducting concept.
  • Four difficulty modes provide a defined way to increase challenge.
  • Global leaderboards give score-focused players a competitive target.
  • Cosmetic unlocks provide rewards without changing the basic premise.
  • The publisher says prior music knowledge is not required.

Those features make Maestro a sensible starting point for someone who wants a structured solo game but is not already familiar with orchestral notation or conducting vocabulary.

Trombone Champ’s collection loop

  • Collectible cards add a discovery layer beyond simply clearing songs.
  • Hidden characters encourage players to inspect and replay the game.
  • New characters, trombones, trombone sounds and other content can be unlocked.
  • Multiple control modes let players choose a preferred way to interact.

Trombone Champ is therefore a better fit for players who enjoy a game that keeps revealing oddities. Its progression is not presented as a graded conducting curriculum; it is a collection-and-unlock loop wrapped around a comic rhythm game.

Does Maestro have a physical Nintendo Switch edition?

Yes. Microids announced and confirmed a physical Nintendo Switch release for September 17, 2026. Microids also states that this physical edition contains 38 tracks.

A digital Nintendo Switch listing exists as well, but the confirmed 38-track figure in the available product information is specifically tied to the physical edition. That distinction matters if you are comparing editions or buying a copy as a gift.

The physical release gives Maestro an advantage for shoppers who want something tangible to wrap, lend or keep on a shelf. Trombone Champ’s official Nintendo page reviewed for this comparison lists a digital Switch edition, so its gifting advantage is convenience rather than a confirmed boxed release.

Is Maestro worth buying if you already own Trombone Champ?

It can be, because the games serve different moods and control fantasies. Owning Trombone Champ already gives you a comic, multiplayer-friendly rhythm game with collectibles; Maestro adds a solo orchestral performance game built around two-handed Joy-Con gestures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy Maestro as a complement if you want a calmer or more theatrical session, enjoy classical and cinematic repertoire, or specifically want to conduct rather than play a trombone-themed interface. Skip it if your main reason for owning Trombone Champ is four-person local play and you do not want a one-player game built around motion control.

Buying both makes the most sense when your library needs both use cases: Maestro for an individual performance session and Trombone Champ for a group gathering. They overlap in timing-based interaction, but their settings, tone and progression systems are distinct enough that one does not simply replace the other.

Which Nintendo Switch music game makes the better gift?

Choose Maestro for a recipient who usually plays alone, likes orchestral or cinematic music, enjoys expressive motion controls and values a confirmed physical edition. The conductor premise is easy to explain on the box and gives the gift a clear identity.

Choose Trombone Champ for a household, siblings or friends who can play together on one system. Its local one-to-four-player format, multiple control modes and collectible humor make it easier to turn the purchase into a shared activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying either game, check the recipient’s controller setup. Maestro’s described design uses one Joy-Con in each hand, and neither game should be assumed to include extra controllers unless the specific retail package says so.

How we picked

This ranking uses the features stated by Nintendo and Microids: player count, control design, music catalog descriptions, accessibility information, progression systems and edition availability. It is a feature-based comparison, not a hands-on review. No independent testing was performed, so it does not claim that either game has lower input latency, better tracking, a higher frame rate, superior audio or shorter loading times.

The recommendation also keeps the audience split explicit. Maestro is first for solo orchestral immersion; Trombone Champ is first for local multiplayer, flexible setup and comic collecting. “Better” changes when the player, room and controller requirements change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Trombone Champ support online multiplayer?

The Nintendo listing specifies local multiplayer for one to four players on a single system. It does not establish an online multiplayer mode, so do not purchase it expecting network play without checking the current store description.

Are Maestro’s 38 tracks included in every Switch version?

The 38-track figure is explicitly stated for Maestro’s physical Nintendo Switch edition. A digital listing exists, but the available information does not confirm that its catalog count is identical.

Does Trombone Champ’s “more than 45 songs” include downloadable expansions?

Nintendo’s 2023 description gives the total as more than 45 songs but does not break that figure into base content, downloadable content or future additions. Treat it as the catalog size stated in that listing rather than a promise about later updates.

The game’s described control design uses one Joy-Con in each hand, but the available product information does not say that additional controllers are included. Check the exact retail package before buying it for someone who does not already have a pair.
