How do I handle the first minutes?
Early progress comes from observing what has changed and testing only objects supported by a clue. Do not assume every unusual surface is a camera target, but do investigate anything that appears out of place.
- Search every accessible container. Open drawers, cupboards, boxes, and doors. Pick up notes, photographs, keys, tools, and anything that can be examined.
- Read and inspect collected clues. Turn objects around when the game allows it; ages, markings, symbols, and wording on a reverse side can establish the relationship a puzzle uses.
- Revisit rooms after major events. A hallway, door, portrait, or light can change after an interaction. A route that was closed earlier may now be usable.

How does the camera work in MADiSON?
The camera links the ordinary environment to the supernatural one. A shot can reveal a number that was invisible on a wall, make a door or object change, or finish a mechanism after you have physically arranged its parts. The important sequence is aim, shoot, develop, inspect, then act on the new evidence.
Develop and inspect the print
After taking a photograph, wait for the game’s manual development process and examine the resulting print. A puzzle may look complete in the room while its final state exists only in the developed image. If a lock, cage, door, or other target does not respond, photograph the specific clue-supported object again and inspect the print before searching for an unrelated solution.
Photograph the subject, not everything
Indiscriminately flashing every wall is unnecessary and can waste limited opportunities in the stricter mode. Look for a relationship between the clue and the subject: a marked location, a changed arrangement, a number that should be hidden, or an object the game has repeatedly directed you toward. Do not confuse the game system with real equipment
The instant camera and its film are gameplay systems. You do not need to buy a real instant camera or physical film to progress. If you are shopping for a physical copy, verify the platform and edition; an actual camera accessory is not part of the game’s requirements.

Use relationships instead of fixed numbers
- Identify what each symbol, portrait, clock, weight, or ring represents.
- Find the clue that links those objects: an age, sequence, location, height, or arithmetic statement.
- Apply that relationship to the objects in your room, even if their visible values differ from a guide.
- Photograph the target when the mechanism or clue indicates that a camera interaction is the final step.
If a walkthrough gives a number, treat it as an example of the derivation. Copying it without checking your own clues is the most common way to turn a correct method into a wrong answer.
How do I solve the major puzzle types without copying a fixed solution?
The following methods are intentionally relationship-based. They explain what to collect and compare while avoiding values that may be different in your run.
Attic portraits
- Collect the portraits and inspect the backs for the ages or other identifying information.
- Look for marked spots in the room and photograph them. The developed image can reveal wall numbers that are not visible normally.
- Use the arithmetic relationship stated by the room’s clues to connect the ages, positions, and revealed numbers.
- Arrange the portraits according to that relationship, then photograph the relevant target if the mechanism does not activate.
The point is not to remember a portrait order from a video. Your set of ages and the revealed numbers are the inputs for the arrangement in your playthrough.

Clock room
- Compare each movable clock face with the corresponding clock behind or near it.
- Record the values and any visual relationship before turning the faces.
- Align the movable faces according to the comparison clue rather than a memorized time.
- When the arrangement is correct, photograph the changed door or other indicated target. The camera can be the step that makes the completed alignment count.
Published clock guides note that their example combinations can vary. If your aligned faces appear correct but the route remains closed, develop the photograph of the changed door instead of repeatedly changing the time (GameSpot).
Weight and cage puzzle
- Read the animal clue as an ordering of heights or sizes, not as a request to identify a random animal code.
- Translate that order into the weights or positions available on the mechanism.
- Place the heavier and lighter weights to match the implied height relationship.
- Photograph the partly raised cage once the physical arrangement is correct.
If the cage moves only partway, that is a signal to check the camera step and the developed print, not proof that the weight order is wrong.
Mausoleum rings and mirror
- Photograph the sides of the rings to rotate them and reveal their usable faces.
- Use the victims’ sequence and burial locations as the organizing clues.
- Match each ring to that sequence and location relationship instead of copying a ring pattern from another run.
- After the mausoleum arrangement is complete, photograph the final mirror; it is part of the solution rather than a decorative reflection.
What should I do when my inventory is full?
Use the storage safe as temporary inventory, but do not treat it as a discard bin. Keep room for discoveries and retrieve an item before leaving if the next route is likely to require it.
- Store non-immediate objects. Put away items you recognize as useful later but do not need for the current door or puzzle.
- Keep tools you may need for a known route. A mausoleum sequence, for example, calls for a hammer in the walkthrough route; retrieve it before setting out if you stored it.
- Recheck the safe when progression stops. A previously collected tool can be the missing requirement, and the game does not promise that every item can be discarded on demand.
- Leave one or two spaces open. New keys, photographs, and puzzle objects often appear immediately after an interaction.

Move attentively when the environment changes, and do not assume that hiding or waiting is always the answer. Hostile entities can interrupt exploration, so keep the camera accessible and watch for the visual cue that identifies the correct target.

- Keep orientation. Remember the nearest safe room, door, or puzzle location so you can resume the objective after an encounter.
- Use photographs deliberately. A camera response can create a short opening, reveal a route, or repel a threat temporarily.
- Do not apply old respawn advice to POSSESSION Mode. The developer explicitly states that death ends a POSSESSION run.
How do I survive Blue Knees?
Spoiler-light encounter advice: When Blue Knees approaches, aim at the creature and take a photograph. The shot repels it temporarily, giving you time to continue the gramophone objective. This tactic is documented in encounter guidance from GameSpew (Blue Knees guide).
- Wait until Blue Knees is approaching and can be framed clearly.
- Aim and photograph the creature rather than an object behind it.
- Use the brief reprieve to return to the gramophone task.
- Complete the required recordings, locate the two eyeballs, and return them to the appropriate hole to advance.
This is later-game guidance, so stop at the first step if you want to discover the objective without advance information. A photograph buys time; it does not permanently remove the encounter.

Accessibility and subtitle size
The same October 2026 update adds an option to increase subtitle size. Check the game’s settings before starting if standard subtitle text is difficult to read; this option is separate from the mode’s puzzle and survival rules.
