Choose an iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard if you value direct touch and tablet flexibility, and the iPadOS apps you need handle your work. The keyboard adds typing and cursor control; it does not turn the iPad into a Mac.
Start with the software you need
List the applications and specific tasks your work requires, then check that they are supported on the operating system you plan to use. A product comparison page cannot establish that a particular professional app—or every feature of it—is available on both macOS and iPadOS.

- Choose MacBook Pro when a required app or workflow depends on macOS, or when you want the familiar laptop setup without attaching a separate keyboard.
- Choose iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard when your required work functions well in iPadOS and you will make real use of the iPad as a tablet as well as a typing device.
Check the exact tasks, not just an app’s name: confirm that the iPad version supports the features, file handling, and workflow you rely on.

MacBook Pro: built-in laptop controls
Apple’s MacBook Pro comparison documents laptop input features such as a keyboard, trackpad, and Touch ID. That is the relevant distinction for this choice: a conventional laptop configuration with its input hardware built in. The cited page does not make a blanket statement about touchscreen availability, so the decision here does not depend on an uncited touchscreen claim.

iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard: touch plus keyboard and cursor
The iPad Pro remains a tablet running iPadOS. With Magic Keyboard attached, it gains keyboard input, a trackpad, and cursor use alongside touch interaction. Apple describes the 13-inch accessory as “Designed for Multi-Touch gestures and the cursor in iPadOS.” That can suit people who switch between typing and using the tablet directly, but it does not provide macOS.
What the Magic Keyboard adds—and what to check
13-inch Magic Keyboard
Apple lists backlit keys with 1 mm of travel, a large glass trackpad with haptic feedback, a 14-key function row, USB-C pass-through charging, and a cover that protects the iPad’s front and back on its 13-inch Magic Keyboard page. The page specifies iPadOS 17.4 or later and lists compatibility with iPad Pro 13-inch (M4) and (M5).

11-inch Magic Keyboard
Apple’s 11-inch Magic Keyboard page lists backlit keys, an iPadOS trackpad and cursor, USB-C pass-through charging, and front-and-back protection. It lists iPad Pro 11-inch (1st through 4th generation) and iPad Air (4th and 5th generation) as compatible models.
Before buying, match the keyboard’s current compatibility list to the exact iPad model and generation you own or plan to buy. Do not assume that a similarly sized iPad or a newer generation is supported because an older listing includes another model.

Compare the complete setup, not just the headline device
The iPad configuration may include an optional Magic Keyboard and any other accessories you need. Compare the specific MacBook Pro configuration against the iPad Pro plus the keyboard, stylus if needed, storage, and other required accessories. Current like-for-like prices are not established here, so check the configurations and prices available in your region before deciding.
Also verify how the exact iPad configuration handles your peripherals and external display needs. The 13-inch Magic Keyboard page specifies USB-C pass-through charging; that feature alone does not establish support for every accessory or display setup you might require.

A practical decision checklist
- Confirm operating-system fit: identify the apps and features your work requires, and verify them on macOS or iPadOS.
- Choose your everyday input: prefer the MacBook Pro’s built-in laptop keyboard and trackpad if that is your main way of working; consider iPad Pro if direct touch and tablet use matter alongside typing.
- Check the exact accessory match: confirm the Magic Keyboard works with your iPad’s model and generation, and check any stated operating-system requirement.
- Audit connections and accessories: list the peripherals, display needs, stylus, and storage you depend on, then confirm the selected configuration supports them.
- Compare the total cost and travel setup: price the complete configurations you would actually carry and use, rather than comparing a tablet alone with a laptop bundle.
Bottom line by type of work
- MacBook Pro: the clearer fit for macOS-dependent work and for anyone who wants a laptop with its keyboard and trackpad built in.
- iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard: the clearer fit when iPadOS meets your app needs and touch or use as a standalone tablet is important.
Neither is a universal replacement for the other. The deciding factors are your software, preferred input, need for tablet use, accessories, and the cost of the complete setup.
