For Apple’s current M5-family MacBook Pro models, the chip determines the external-display ceiling: M5 supports up to two displays, M5 Pro up to three, and M5 Max up to four. The supported resolution and refresh rate also depend on the configuration. All three chip tiers include HDMI and three Thunderbolt ports, but M5 uses Thunderbolt 4 while M5 Pro and M5 Max use Thunderbolt 5.
Which MacBook Pro should you buy for your monitors?
Choose by the number and specifications of the displays you intend to connect—not just by the number of ports. Apple’s published limits for current M5-family models are:

| Chip | Maximum external displays | Apple-listed display configurations |
|---|---|---|
| M5 | Up to two | Two displays up to 6K at 60 Hz or 4K at 144 Hz; alternatively, one display up to 8K at 60 Hz, 5K at 120 Hz, or 4K at 240 Hz. |
| M5 Pro | Up to three | Three displays up to 6K at 60 Hz or 4K at 144 Hz; alternatively, one display up to 8K at 60 Hz, 5K at 120 Hz, or 4K at 240 Hz, plus a second up to 5K at 120 Hz or 4K at 200 Hz. |
| M5 Max | Up to four | Four displays up to 6K at 60 Hz or 4K at 144 Hz; alternatively, two displays up to 8K at 60 Hz, 5K at 120 Hz, or 4K at 240 Hz. |
These are Apple’s supported configurations, with the MacBook’s built-in display operating at its full native resolution. They are not a guarantee that every combination of displays, adapters, cables, and connection paths will work. Check the exact chip and each monitor’s resolution and refresh rate against Apple’s MacBook Pro specifications.

If you need two external displays
An M5 model may be sufficient if your two monitors fit Apple’s listed two-display configuration. If either monitor needs a higher resolution or refresh rate than that combination allows, compare the exact setup against the M5 Pro and M5 Max configurations before buying.

If you need three or four external displays
A three-display setup points to M5 Pro or M5 Max; a four-display setup points to M5 Max. Those recommendations follow Apple’s published display ceilings, not independent performance testing.
Does the MacBook Pro have HDMI, and can Thunderbolt connect a monitor?
Yes. Apple lists an HDMI port and three Thunderbolt ports on the current configurations. Both HDMI and Thunderbolt support video output. Depending on your monitor’s inputs, you can connect it directly with a suitable cable or use an appropriate adapter. Apple’s MacBook Pro display support guidance explains the available connection options.

Before choosing a cable or adapter, identify the monitor’s input—such as HDMI or DisplayPort—and confirm the resolution and refresh rate you want to use. A USB-C or Thunderbolt-to-HDMI/DisplayPort accessory is relevant when the Mac and monitor do not share a suitable connector; it does not change the Mac’s supported display count.

For a display-focused purchase, the chip’s display limit and the monitor’s resolution/refresh-rate combination are the first checks. Thunderbolt generation is also relevant if you need the higher published port bandwidth or DisplayPort capability of M5 Pro and M5 Max models. These specifications alone do not establish how a chip will perform in a particular real-world workload.
Will a dock let you connect more displays?
No. A supported hub or daisy chain can route the number of displays the Mac is permitted to support through a single Thunderbolt port, but it does not raise the model’s overall maximum. Apple’s guidance for connecting displays also recommends connecting the highest-resolution display first. Confirm that the hub, displays, and connection path support the resolution and refresh rates you need.

What should you check before choosing a model?
- Count your external displays. Match the count to the chip’s maximum: M5 for up to two, M5 Pro for up to three, or M5 Max for up to four.
- Write down each monitor’s target resolution and refresh rate. Compare the whole combination with Apple’s supported configurations, not only the per-monitor maximum.
- Check the display inputs and cables. Confirm whether each monitor uses HDMI, DisplayPort, or another connection supported by your chosen cable or adapter.
- Compare Thunderbolt needs. The 14-inch M5 model uses Thunderbolt 4; M5 Pro and M5 Max models use Thunderbolt 5. Verify the exact model and size on Apple’s specification page.
- Choose size and portability separately. Apple lists 14-inch and 16-inch configurations with model-specific differences. Check the specification page for the precise model rather than assuming display or port details carry across sizes.
Does the built-in display have the same specifications on every MacBook Pro?
No. The Liquid Retina XDR panel’s specifications vary by model size. As one specific example, Apple lists the 16-inch M5 Pro/M5 Max model’s built-in display as 16.2 inches diagonally, with a native resolution of 3456 × 2234 and 254 pixels per inch. Those figures describe that 16-inch model, not the 14-inch version. Apple identifies its 16-inch M5 Pro/M5 Max specifications on the model-specific technical specifications page.

Are these recommendations valid for older or used MacBook Pros?
This comparison covers Apple’s current M5-family configurations: the 14-inch M5 model introduced in 2025 and the M5 Pro/M5 Max 14-inch models introduced in 2026, alongside the listed 14-inch and 16-inch configurations. Older MacBook Pro generations can have different display limits and port specifications. For a used Mac, look up the support page for its exact model rather than applying the M5-family figures.
