There is no single way to “fix” an input tax credit (ITC) mismatch in GST returns. First find where the difference originates—your books, a supplier’s filing, the Invoice Management System (IMS), or ITC eligibility—then correct that record or reporting treatment. You cannot edit GSTR-2B, and an invoice appearing in it does not by itself prove that the credit is eligible.
Can you edit GSTR-2B to fix a mismatch?
No. GSTR-2B is a read-only, static ITC statement: a recipient cannot add a missing document or change the details shown in it. The GST Portal advises taxpayers to reconcile the statement against their own records. GST Portal: GSTR-2B FAQ

GSTR-3B is different. The portal auto-populates ITC from GSTR-2B, but the registered person can edit the prefilled return. That does not transfer responsibility for the figures to the portal: you must check the return and apply the rules relevant to the transaction and tax period. CBIC Circular 170/02/2022-GST describes this auto-population and editing facility. CBIC Circular 170/02/2022-GST, issued 6 July 2022

Compare your purchase register and books with downloaded GSTR-2B data at document level. Check the supplier GSTIN, invoice or debit note number and date, taxable value, tax amounts, place of supply and tax period. Then classify the discrepancy before changing a return or asking for a correction.
#1 Best Overall
- Great way to organize and store vital tax records
- Instruction sheet/checklist and preprinted labels included
- 12 pockets plus one large pocket in back provides ample storage
- Protective flap and elastic cord closure
- Contains 10% recycled content, 10% post-consumer material
- Document missing or incorrect in GSTR-2B: Check with the supplier whether the outward-supply document was reported correctly. A recipient cannot add or amend it in GSTR-2B.
- Your books contain a duplicate, posting error or period-allocation error: Correct the accounting reconciliation and assess the ITC treatment for the relevant return period. Do not claim the same credit twice.
- Eligibility, reversal or timing issue: Decide whether the credit is legally available and whether a reversal or later re-availment is allowed for the specific facts. A mismatch alone does not answer that question.
- IMS item differs from your records: Inspect the invoice or amendment in IMS, take the appropriate action and check whether GSTR-2B needs to be recomputed before filing GSTR-3B.
This is a triage method, not a ruling on an individual invoice. The result can depend on the tax period, filing status, eligibility rules, statutory time limits, later amendments and the portal workflow in force.
If the supplier reported the invoice incorrectly or missed it
Ask the supplier to check its outward-supply filing and make a correction through an available return facility. The GST Portal describes GSTR-1A as an optional facility for amending or adding same-period details after GSTR-1 is filed or its due date has passed, whichever is later, and before the supplier files GSTR-3B for that period. A supplier’s GSTR-1A correction is not an edit to your already generated GSTR-2B. The portal says the corresponding ITC becomes available in the recipient’s GSTR-2B for the next tax period. Confirm that the supplier filed the correction, then check the relevant later statement rather than expecting the original period’s statement to change.

IMS actions affect how records flow into ITC statements and GSTR-3B. The GST Portal’s IMS advisory describes these outcomes:
Rank #3
- Accepted: The record goes to ITC available and auto-populates GSTR-3B.
- Rejected: The record goes to ITC rejected and does not auto-populate GSTR-3B.
- Pending: The record remains outside GSTR-2B and GSTR-3B while it is pending action.
Review the specific invoice or amendment and the portal’s current action options and recomputation timing before filing. The advisory describes recipient actions after GSTR-2B generation and notes that recomputation may be needed. It also says an action is unavailable after GSTR-3B has been filed for that month. Verify any record-specific restrictions in the portal before relying on a pending status. GST Portal IMS advisory
Check eligibility and reversals before submitting GSTR-3B
GSTR-2B is an input for reconciliation, not proof on its own that a recipient may claim every displayed amount. The GST Portal says taxpayers must self-assess eligibility and account for other legal restrictions, including required exclusions or reversals. Its “ITC not available” indication covers specified scenarios; other restrictions may still apply. GST Portal: GSTR-2B FAQ

CBIC Circular 170/02/2022-GST addresses reporting eligible and ineligible or blocked ITC and reversals in GSTR-3B. Before filing, reconcile the prefilled values to the documents and your eligibility assessment, then make any required changes in the return. Do not treat either a mismatch or a portal prefill as a substitute for that review. CBIC Circular 170/02/2022-GST and GST Council circular listing
Use the correction route that matches the error
| Where the issue sits | What to do | Where to verify the result |
|---|---|---|
| Recipient’s books or posting | Correct the reconciliation or accounting error; assess ITC for the proper period and avoid a duplicate claim. | Purchase register, supporting documents and the relevant return. |
| Supplier’s reported document | Ask the supplier to correct or add the document through an available filing facility, including GSTR-1A where its conditions are met. | The recipient’s next tax-period GSTR-2B for a GSTR-1A correction. |
| IMS status or action | Review the record, take the appropriate IMS action and recompute GSTR-2B if the portal requires it before filing. | Updated ITC statements and GSTR-3B prefill. |
| Eligibility, reversal or timing | Apply the rules to the transaction and period; exclude or reverse credit where required, and re-avail only if permitted. | Relevant documents, applicable rules and the return after review. |
These routes are not interchangeable: a supplier correction changes the supplier-side reporting, an IMS action affects return auto-population, and a recipient-side accounting adjustment does not edit GSTR-2B. For an invoice whose treatment is uncertain, check the rules and portal instructions for its specific tax period before filing.
