Verdict: The 16-inch MacBook Pro (2026) with M5 Max delivers excellent performance, a high-quality 16.2-inch Mini-LED display, quiet everyday operation and very strong light-use battery life. However, Notebookcheck’s sustained combined-workload test found the battery fell from 100% to 88% in one hour while the laptop was connected to Apple’s included 140 W adapter. An 180 W adapter produced the same result in the reviewer’s test, so buying a larger charger is not a demonstrated fix.
That makes the M5 Max model easier to recommend for demanding work that comes in bursts than for workloads that keep both the processor and graphics system heavily loaded for hours at a time.

Does the MacBook Pro 16 M5 Max lose battery while plugged in?
Yes, Notebookcheck documented battery loss during a sustained combined CPU-and-GPU workload. Its review unit went from 100% to 88% after one hour while connected to the included 140 W power adapter. This is a result from one review configuration and one test protocol, not a guarantee that every MacBook Pro 16 behaves identically.
The tested machine was a 2026 16-inch MacBook Pro with an M5 Max chip, 48 GB of memory and a 2 TB SSD. The review, written by Andreas Osthoff and dated August 27, 2026, describes the behavior as an insufficient power-adapter limitation under full load. It does not establish that the computer will drain while plugged in during ordinary browsing, office work, video playback or other light tasks.

What the one-hour result means
A 12-percentage-point drop in an hour means the system consumed more power than the 140 W adapter could supply under that particular combined workload, with the battery covering the difference. It does not mean the battery lasts only about eight hours in all circumstances, nor does it indicate a defect in every retail unit. The finding is most relevant to sustained rendering, compiling, simulation, code builds, 3D work and other jobs that keep CPU and GPU resources busy together.
What it does not prove
- It does not prove that every M5 Max MacBook Pro loses exactly 12 percentage points per hour.
- It does not show that the battery drains during every task performed while connected to power.
- It does not establish a universal Apple specification for maximum system consumption.
- It does not show that replacing the adapter restores a constant 100% battery level.
Did a 180 W adapter solve the problem?
No. Notebookcheck says its test with a 180 W adapter showed the same battery behavior. That is the most important practical point for buyers considering an expensive higher-wattage USB-C adapter: the review did not demonstrate a benefit.
The result does not mean that every 180 W adapter is electrically identical, or that a different adapter can never affect a different machine. It means only that the larger adapter used in this review did not stop the battery decline in the tested workload. There is therefore no evidence here to justify buying a higher-wattage charger as a proven cure.
Why the adapter rating is not the whole power story
An adapter’s printed wattage is its maximum available output under specified conditions. The laptop, charging system, firmware and thermal controls still determine how much power reaches the processor, graphics hardware and battery. If the computer deliberately limits sustained chip power or reserves capacity for transient peaks, a higher-rated adapter may not change the steady-state result.
Compatibility also matters. Notebookcheck’s review does not verify Apple’s current regional charging rules, supported USB-C profiles, warranty implications or the behavior of every third-party adapter. Use Apple’s current guidance before buying any replacement, and treat the 180 W test as evidence about this review setup rather than a universal accessory rule.
How much power did the M5 Max use under sustained load?
Notebookcheck recorded several distinct power levels. Keeping them separate is important because they describe different tests rather than one fixed consumption figure.

| Test condition | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Sustained processor load | Up to 75 W, then approximately 70 W | The reviewer’s measured chip behavior after the workload settled. |
| Combined CPU and GPU stress | Up to 114 W initially, then approximately 70 W | A short higher draw followed by a lower sustained level in that test. |
| System connected to included adapter during combined work | Battery fell 12 percentage points in one hour | The total system demand exceeded charging input in the reviewer’s setup. |
The approximately 70 W sustained figure is the reviewer’s measurement and interpretation of a cooling or power limit under its conditions. It is not an independently confirmed manufacturer specification. The 75 W processor peak and 114 W combined-workload peak should not be collapsed into a claim that the laptop always draws one of those values.
Why the initial peak and sustained level differ
Modern notebook systems commonly allow short bursts above a long-term thermal target. As heat accumulates, firmware can reduce power to keep temperatures, fan noise and component limits under control. In this review, the combined stress test reached up to 114 W before leveling at about 70 W. That pattern explains why a quick benchmark can look different from a job that runs for an hour.
For buyers, sustained throughput matters more than the first few seconds of a benchmark. If your work repeatedly runs long CPU-and-GPU sessions, plan around the review’s settled behavior rather than its brief peak.
How long does the battery last in lighter use?
The same review measured 18.5 hours in its Wi-Fi battery test at 150 nits. That is an excellent result for the tested configuration, but it belongs to a controlled, lower-load protocol and should not be used to predict unplugged runtime during professional rendering or other sustained work.
At maximum SDR brightness, the review reported nearly seven hours. Screen brightness, wireless activity, browser tabs, background processes and application efficiency can all change the result. The two measurements illustrate why “battery life” is not one number: light-use endurance and plugged-in performance under combined load behave very differently.
| Scenario | Notebookcheck result | What it is useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi test at 150 nits | 18.5 hours | A controlled indication of light-use endurance at moderate brightness. |
| Maximum SDR brightness | Nearly 7 hours | An indication of the brightness penalty in the review’s test. |
| Combined workload while connected to 140 W | 100% to 88% in one hour | Evidence of battery supplementation during sustained heavy work. |
Is the 70 W limit a problem for performance?
It is a workload-dependent limitation, not a verdict that the M5 Max is slow. Notebookcheck still characterized the system’s overall performance as excellent. The concern is that long combined workloads may eventually run below the power level suggested by short bursts, while also drawing down the battery even when the adapter is connected.

For interactive work, the machine can still feel fast: launching applications, compiling a project in stages, editing media, manipulating large files and switching between tasks do not necessarily maintain maximum CPU and GPU load continuously. The limitation matters most when both subsystems remain busy for a long period and uninterrupted throughput is more important than peak responsiveness.
Who is most likely to notice it?
- Users exporting or rendering for long periods while also using GPU acceleration.
- Developers running sustained parallel builds, virtual machines or heavy local test suites.
- Scientists, engineers and creators running simulations or compute-intensive analysis.
- Anyone expecting the laptop to remain at 100% battery during a lengthy combined stress session.
Who may never encounter it?
- People whose work is primarily web, email, documents and communication.
- Travelers who value long unplugged sessions and use demanding applications only occasionally.
- Professionals whose heavy jobs are short bursts separated by review, editing or file-management time.
How good are the display, noise and everyday experience?
The review’s positives are substantial. It describes a high-quality 16.2-inch Mini-LED display, excellent system performance and quiet everyday operation. Those strengths matter because a workstation is used between benchmark runs: a sharp, high-contrast screen and low noise can improve long editing, coding and writing sessions.
The review does not establish a universal brightness, color-gamut, refresh-rate or measured contrast specification in the supplied material, so those figures should not be inferred from the Mini-LED label. The defensible conclusion is narrower: Notebookcheck judged the panel quality highly in its tested unit, while its battery measurements show that brightness and workload have a major effect on endurance.
What is different about the 16-inch chassis?
The 16-inch model provides the physical space used by the reviewed M5 Max configuration and its cooling system. However, the supplied review evidence does not provide a complete, controlled comparison with a smaller MacBook Pro configuration. It therefore cannot establish how much faster, cooler, quieter or more efficient the 16-inch version is in every workload.
| Buying question | What is established | What remains unestablished |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | The reviewed M5 Max system was rated excellent overall. | A quantified advantage over every smaller configuration. |
| Sustained power | The review recorded about 70 W after its sustained tests settled. | Identical limits across other chip, memory or storage options. |
| Portability | It is the 16-inch model with a large display. | A measured weight, size comparison or travel advantage over smaller models. |
| Battery behavior | 18.5 hours in the specified Wi-Fi test; battery decline in combined load. | Runtime for every regional configuration or application mix. |
If you are choosing between screen area and portability, use the 16-inch display and chassis as the primary decision points. Do not assume that a smaller model will share the exact power behavior recorded here without a comparable test.
Can the battery drain be prevented during heavy work?
The review does not identify a demonstrated fix. Because the 180 W test showed the same behavior, changing adapters alone should not be treated as a solution. The practical response is to manage workload and charging expectations rather than promise a hardware remedy that has not been shown.

Work practices that reduce exposure
- Schedule long renders, exports and simulations where a gradual battery decline is acceptable.
- Break independent jobs into batches so the system can cool and recharge between runs.
- Reduce unnecessary simultaneous CPU and GPU activity when the application permits it.
- Use a moderate display brightness for long unplugged sessions; the review’s results show a large difference between 150 nits and maximum SDR brightness.
- Monitor battery percentage during the first long job on your own unit instead of assuming the review’s 12-point result will be identical.
What not to assume
- Do not assume a 180 W adapter will restore charging under your workload.
- Do not interpret a temporary battery drop as proof that the battery is defective.
- Do not treat the review’s measured power levels as Apple’s guaranteed operating limits.
Is the MacBook Pro 16 M5 Max worth buying?
It is worth considering if your priorities are top-tier performance, a large Mini-LED display, quiet everyday use and excellent light-use battery life, and if your demanding jobs are intermittent or you can tolerate some battery consumption while plugged in. The review’s overall performance assessment is strongly positive.
It is a less comfortable choice for a workflow built around many hours of uninterrupted, simultaneous CPU-and-GPU computation while expecting the battery to stay full. In that case, the review’s 12-point decline and unchanged result with a 180 W adapter are material constraints, not footnotes.
A decision framework
| Your priority | Fit based on the review | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum interactive performance | Strong fit | The review reports excellent system performance. |
| Large, high-quality display | Strong fit | The 16.2-inch Mini-LED panel was a positive finding. |
| Long light-use sessions away from an outlet | Strong fit | 18.5 hours was measured at 150 nits in the Wi-Fi test. |
| Constant combined CPU/GPU workloads on wall power | Conditional fit | The battery fell during the review’s one-hour test. |
| Fixing the issue by buying a larger charger | Weak premise | The 180 W test reportedly showed the same behavior. |
What maintenance and service options are available?
Notebookcheck says there are practically no maintenance options for the reviewed machine. That means buyers should choose memory and storage capacity carefully at purchase rather than expecting straightforward upgrades later. The review material does not verify current regional repair pricing, warranty terms or parts availability, so check Apple’s service information for your country before relying on a specific repair plan.
The reviewed configuration had 48 GB of memory and a 2 TB SSD. Those capacities describe the tested unit; they are not evidence that every market offers the same combination or that current stock and pricing match the review’s dated availability mention.

How should you verify the behavior on your own unit?
If sustained performance is central to your purchase, reproduce the conditions that matter to you instead of relying on a short benchmark. Keep the comparison controlled and record battery percentage, adapter status, workload and display brightness.
- Connect the MacBook Pro to its supplied adapter and note the battery percentage.
- Set the display brightness to the level you normally use; record it because the review’s battery figures were tied to specific brightness conditions.
- Run your real combined workload, such as the export, build or simulation that occupies both processor and graphics resources.
- Check the battery percentage after 60 minutes and note whether the task remained continuously active.
- Repeat on a different day if the result is surprising, keeping applications and background activity as consistent as possible.
- If you test another compatible adapter, record its rated output and use the same workload; do not treat one changed result as proof of a universal fix.
This procedure cannot reproduce Notebookcheck’s exact laboratory setup without its software and instrumentation, but it can answer the buying question that matters: whether your own sustained work gradually consumes battery while connected.

Final verdict: powerful M5 Max, but an adapter caveat you should understand
The MacBook Pro 16 (2026) with M5 Max is not a poor performer. It combines excellent measured performance, a premium Mini-LED display, quiet everyday behavior and outstanding light-use endurance. The important qualification is power delivery during sustained combined workloads: Notebookcheck saw a 12-percentage-point battery decline in one hour on the included 140 W adapter, and its 180 W test did not change that outcome.
Buy it for the performance and display if your workload is mixed or bursty. Approach it cautiously if your work keeps CPU and GPU load high for hours and requires the battery to remain fully charged. A higher-wattage adapter should not be added to the budget as a proven remedy, because this review did not show that it works.

Will the MacBook Pro 16 M5 Max charge normally during browsing and office work?
The cited test only demonstrates battery decline during sustained combined workloads. It does not measure ordinary browsing, documents or video playback, so those lighter activities cannot be assigned the same result from this review alone.
Does battery decline while plugged in mean the battery is damaged?
Not necessarily. A system can supplement adapter power with the battery when total demand exceeds charging input; the review’s result is a power-budget observation, not a battery-health diagnosis. Apple’s battery-health tools and service guidance are needed to assess an individual machine.
Should I buy the 48 GB and 2 TB configuration specifically?
That was the configuration tested by Notebookcheck, so it makes the review results easier to identify. The supplied material does not establish that it is the best value or that every region offers it; compare current local configurations, pricing and your application requirements.
Can I keep using the laptop after the battery drops under load?
The review reports a decline, not an automatic shutdown. You can continue working while connected, but a long enough session may reduce the remaining charge, so leave recovery time or an outlet available before starting another demanding job.
