Choose the MacBook Air if you need a conventional computer
The MacBook Air is the more straightforward pick when it will be your only computer, your school or employer requires desktop software, or your work involves juggling many apps and files. Its keyboard and trackpad are ready to use, and its ports make it easier to connect common desk equipment without starting with a separate keyboard purchase. Apple lists two Thunderbolt 4 ports, MagSafe 3, and a headphone jack on the current model. Apple’s March 2026 announcement says the M5 MacBook Air supports up to two external displays; consult the model-specific technical specifications for the configuration you plan to buy.
This recommendation is about the operating system and setup, not a claim that the MacBook is universally faster or more productive. If you rely on a particular desktop app, exam or testing software, peripheral, or institutional workflow, check its requirements before buying either device.

Choose the iPad Air if you want a tablet that can also type
The iPad Air with Magic Keyboard suits people who want to move between a tablet and a typing setup. Touch input can be convenient for reading and navigating, while Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C) are supported for handwriting, drawing, and annotating documents. The Pencil is optional, and it adds cost if your workflow calls for it. See Apple’s iPad Air specifications for compatibility.
The trade-off is that the keyboard is an add-on and iPadOS is not macOS. Apple describes iPadOS 26 as adding a windowing system for organizing and switching between apps, a menu bar for app commands, and updates to Files. Those improvements make multitasking and file handling more capable, but they do not guarantee that an iPad supports every desktop app or work process. Verify the exact apps you need—including school-specific exam software—before treating it as your only computer.

The current iPad Air supports one external display up to 6K at 60 Hz, according to Apple’s technical specifications. That may be enough for a simple desk, but it is a meaningful limitation if your setup depends on two external monitors.

The comparison is not perfectly like-for-like: the iPad is still a detachable tablet, while the MacBook is a laptop. The iPad’s listed cellular option may also suit people who need connectivity away from Wi-Fi, but cellular pricing and availability depend on configuration and market. Check Apple’s current local listings and accessory compatibility before purchase.
Match the device to your daily work
Writing, research, coursework, and video calls
For ordinary writing, web research, online coursework, and video calls, either device may be sufficient. Consider whether you prefer a fixed laptop setup or the ability to remove the keyboard and use a touchscreen. Try the keyboard size you expect to use regularly, especially if long typing sessions are central to your day.

Handwritten notes and reading
If you regularly mark up readings, sketch, or take handwritten notes, the iPad’s touch display and Pencil support can be a more natural fit. If those are occasional tasks, weigh the cost of the optional Pencil against how often you will actually use it.

Desk setup and accessories
For a desk with one external monitor, either device may work if the display and connection are compatible. If you need two external displays, Apple’s stated support favors the MacBook Air. A hub may add connections in some setups, but choose one only after checking the monitor’s resolution and connection type, charging requirements, and the other peripherals you plan to attach.

- Pick MacBook Air: you need a primary computer, desktop applications, a built-in typing setup, or up to two external displays.
- Pick iPad Air with Magic Keyboard: tablet use, touch input, reading, or Pencil-based work is central, and your required apps are supported on iPadOS.
- Before ordering: check app and exam requirements, add the keyboard to the iPad’s total cost, confirm display needs, and verify current local prices and accessory compatibility.
Apple’s product details and pricing can change. Its claim of up to 18 hours of battery life for the M5 MacBook Air is a manufacturer figure, not an independent head-to-head battery test; it should not be read as proof of longer battery life than the iPad Air.
