Spread food out, use the rack position specified for your exact model, and turn or rotate food partway through when appropriate. If the outside cooks too quickly, lower the temperature and give the food more time.
Why an air-fryer oven cooks food unevenly
Air-fry mode uses circulating hot air, so food needs room for air to move around it. Crowding pieces together, stacking them, or using a pan that fills the oven can obstruct that circulation. Manufacturers also specify rack positions and accessory arrangements that vary by appliance; a position that works for one model is not automatically right for another.

Uneven browning can also result when a rack or the oven bottom is covered with foil, or when a drip tray or pan blocks air from reaching the food. If the outside is already dark while the center remains raw, the heat may be cooking the exterior too quickly for the interior to catch up.

Spread out the food
Arrange pieces in a single, even layer when possible, leaving gaps between them. Avoid stacking. If the tray is tightly packed, cook a smaller batch. Commercial Chef’s multi-oven manual identifies excess food and ingredients placed too close together as potential causes of food not finishing evenly.

Check the correct rack position for your oven
Use the rack position in the instructions for your exact model. There is no universal air-fry rack number: Whirlpool gives typical guidance of position 3 in a five-position cavity and position 4 in a seven-position cavity, while Samsung specifies position 3 for the supported oven models covered by its instructions. Turn or rotate food partway through
For food that can be safely handled, turn or rotate pieces around the halfway point; shake them if they are in a suitable basket. Frigidaire recommends turning, rotating, or shaking food midway in troubleshooting guidance for its air-fryer toaster combo. Lower the heat and extend the time if the outside burns first
If the exterior is burnt while the center is still raw, Frigidaire recommends lowering the temperature and extending the cooking time. The right adjustment depends on the food and oven, so there is no single temperature reduction that applies to every recipe.

Clear obstructions around the food
Do not squeeze an oversized pan into the oven if it leaves little room for air circulation. Whirlpool recommends about 2 inches of clearance around baking pans in its range guidance; treat that as advice for the ovens covered by that guidance, not a universal measurement. Whirlpool also warns against covering an entire rack or the oven bottom with foil because it can block airflow. Do not line or cover surfaces unless your manual permits it. Use an accessory only if it is compatible and needed
A perforated air-fry basket can allow air to reach food from underneath, but it will not fix a crowded load or the wrong rack position. Whirlpool identifies its W11548747 stainless-steel mesh oven air-fry basket as optional and recommended for best results, not required. Check your model’s manual and the accessory dimensions before buying; compatibility is not universal. See Whirlpool’s air-fry instructions.
When using multiple racks, trays, or a drip pan
Follow the manual’s permitted rack positions and tray arrangement rather than assuming every oven can air-fry on multiple levels at once. A solid tray can limit air reaching food underneath, while a perforated basket allows more airflow from below. Some models also specify where a drip tray belongs: Samsung says to place it below the rack for supported models, and Oster’s manual advises using the middle rack and catching drips below greasy food. Check the instructions for your appliance before moving trays or adding a pan. The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish one rotation schedule for all multi-rack cooking.

When a manual allows different rack arrangements, compare the permitted positions, whether the cooking surface is perforated or solid, where any drip pan goes, and how much space remains between pieces. Keep batches small enough to leave the air space the appliance requires.
If the problem continues
After checking loading, rack position, cooking settings, obstructions, and cleanliness, consult the manual for your model. If food still cooks unevenly, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. The guidance above cannot identify an internal fault without model-specific information.
