For a fixed U.S. desk setup, the Mac mini is the lower-cost choice if you already own a compatible monitor and input devices. Apple’s U.S. store lists the Mac mini from $899 and MacBook Air from $1,299—a $400 difference in starting computer price. But the Air includes its own display, keyboard, trackpad, and battery, so it may be better value if you need a portable computer or would otherwise buy desk equipment.
How the starting prices compare
Apple’s U.S. starting prices are $899 for the Mac mini with M6 and $1,299 for MacBook Air, according to Apple’s store as accessed October 7, 2026. The mini’s starting price is $400 lower before tax. These are entry prices, not a comparison of models with identical memory and storage; the total changes with the configuration you choose. Apple’s Mac mini store page and MacBook Air store page.

What the prices include—and what they do not

You may also need a keyboard and mouse or other pointer device. You work in more than one place
The MacBook Air is the more practical value when you need the same computer at home, at work, or on the go. Its screen and input devices travel with it, and Apple rates its battery for up to 18 hours of video streaming or up to 15 hours of wireless web use. Those are published ratings, not a guarantee for every app, workload, or setting. Apple’s MacBook Air specifications.
You are building a desk setup from scratch
Compare the Air’s price with a full Mac mini setup, including the specific monitor, keyboard, mouse, and any adapters or dock you need. There is no universal bundle total: equipment choices and configurations vary, and the starting prices above do not establish the cost of matched complete setups. Avoid treating the $400 computer-price difference as the final savings unless you already have the peripherals.

How to make a fair total-cost comparison
- Choose the Mac configuration. Compare the memory and storage you actually need rather than relying only on the entry price.
- List what you already own. Count only equipment you would need to purchase for the setup; do not add a monitor or keyboard you already have and intend to use.
- Add missing essentials for the mini. Include a compatible monitor and, if needed, keyboard and mouse or another pointer device.
- Add optional desk equipment for the Air. Include an external display, full-size input devices, adapters, or a dock only if you want them.
- Check display compatibility. Confirm the selected Mac supports your monitor’s resolution, refresh rate, connection, and multi-display needs.
- Compare the totals and your mobility needs. The lower total matters, but so does whether the computer must work away from your desk.
