Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Buy memory for the work you keep open at the same time, and buy internal storage for the files that have to live on the Mac. For light, predictable use, the base 16GB of unified memory is a reasonable starting point. 256GB of storage only suits you if your library is small or mostly lives elsewhere. Apple doesn’t publish workload-by-workload minimums, so the tiers below are practical buying guidance, not Apple rules or benchmark results.
What Apple currently offers
As of 2026-10-07, Apple’s Mac mini specifications page lists these configurations. The page is dynamic and varies by region, so check your local store for the exact options.

| Chip | Starting memory | Memory options | Internal SSD options |
|---|---|---|---|
| M6 | 16GB unified | 24GB or 32GB | 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, 2TB (depending on configuration) |
| M5 Pro | 24GB unified | 32GB, 48GB or 64GB (depending on model) | 512GB up to 8TB |
For context, Apple’s support page for the 2024 Mac mini shows the M4 starting at 16GB and 256GB, configurable to 24GB or 32GB and up to 2TB. The M4 Pro starts at 24GB and 512GB, configurable to 48GB or 64GB and up to 8TB. That is the previous generation, not today’s lineup.
Apple lists unified memory, which is part of the chip package, as a configuration choice. The pages reviewed don’t describe any post-purchase upgrade path. Pick the capacity you need when you order, and confirm with Apple before assuming you can change anything later.

How much memory do you need?
Memory pressure comes from how many demanding things run at once and how big they are. A few dozen browser tabs plus office apps is a very different load from a large video timeline, a big photo catalog and a browser all open together.
16GB: light to moderate, predictable use
Browsing, email, documents, video calls, streaming and media playback are what the base amount is for. It’s also fine for a home server, a media box or a secondary desk machine. If your workload is modest and unlikely to change, paying for more memory buys you little.

24GB: a sensible step up
This suits people who regularly keep several heavier apps open together, such as a creative app alongside a browser with many tabs and a chat or communication tool. It’s also a hedge if you aren’t sure how your use will grow.

Choose this if you work with large creative projects, run several demanding applications side by side, or expect to keep the machine for demanding work for years. The 48GB and 64GB options on the M5 Pro are for people who already know their projects are large. If you can’t name a task that needs that much, you probably don’t.

These tiers are editorial heuristics. Apple’s pages list the options but give no task-specific performance figures, and none of this is based on benchmarks.
How much storage do you need?
Start with a count, not a guess. Add up your applications, active projects, photos, video and any other files you want stored on the Mac. Then add room to grow, because storage needs rarely shrink.

- 256GB: workable for apps, documents and a modest library, especially if most of your files live in cloud or network storage. It gets tight quickly with a sizable local media or project library.
- 512GB: a more comfortable middle ground for general use with some projects kept locally.
- 1TB: suits people with growing photo or video libraries, or several large projects at once.
- 2TB and above: for people who know they need substantial local capacity. Apple lists up to 2TB on M6 configurations and up to 8TB on M5 Pro.
This is capacity-planning advice, not an Apple recommendation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan an external SSD fill the gap?
Yes, for some workflows. Apple lists USB-C and Thunderbolt connectivity on the Mac mini, so external SSDs are a practical way to add space for archives, finished projects or media you don’t touch daily.

It’s not a substitute for internal storage in every case. Don’t assume every app, library or active project belongs on an external drive. Before relying on one, check that the specific drive is compatible and fast enough for the job. A slow drive or a loose cable becomes a daily annoyance in a desktop setup, and a drive that’s unplugged makes its files unavailable.
A quick way to decide
- List the heaviest set of apps and projects you’d realistically have open at once. If it’s mostly browsing and office work, 16GB is likely enough. If it includes large creative projects, lean toward 24GB or 32GB.
- Total the files that must stay on the Mac, and add room for growth. Pick the internal SSD tier that covers that with space to spare.
- Decide whether bulky, rarely used files can sit on an external drive. If so, you can buy a smaller internal SSD.
- Compare the extra cost of each step in your own market. Prices vary by region, and none are quoted here, so judge whether each upgrade solves a problem you actually have.
Because the memory is part of the machine, err slightly toward more if you plan to keep the Mac mini a long time. Storage is the easier shortfall to patch, thanks to external drives.
