Some fish build nests on the seafloor to give their eggs a place to attach and to care for them after spawning. The sand goby offers a clear example: a male excavates beneath an empty mussel shell, covers it with sand, attracts a female to lay eggs there, then guards and fans the eggs. Nest-building is species-specific, and habitat protections usually focus on places and activities—not on every individual nest.
How a sand goby nest works
In the studied sand goby (Pomatoschistus minutus), the male excavates a hollow beneath an empty mussel shell and piles sand over it. He courts a female, which lays eggs on the nest ceiling. After spawning, the male guards and defends the eggs and fans water across them. This is one documented strategy, not a template for all fish: species differ, and not every fish builds a nest or uses sand. Jones and Reynolds, 1999

Why nest shape involves trade-offs
A nest needs to protect eggs while allowing water to circulate. In experiments with common gobies (Pomatoschistus microps), females kept under normal oxygen conditions preferred nests with more sand covering the top and smaller entrances. The researchers found that these nests were less vulnerable to detection by shore-crab predators searching for eggs. But a smaller entrance may also limit oxygenation.

When oxygen levels were low, females showed no significant preference for the more elaborate nest design. Males with small nest entrances fanned more often in the unmanipulated treatment. The results suggest that the benefit of concealing a nest depends partly on the oxygen available; they do not establish a universally best nest shape. Jones and Reynolds, 1999

How habitat can affect parental care
Nest structure and surrounding substrate can influence what parents do. In a study comparing sand and rocky habitat treatments for sand gobies, males in the rock-habitat treatment fanned their eggs less often and in shorter bouts than males in the sand-habitat treatment. That finding connects nest setting with care behavior, but it does not mean that one habitat is always better for every species or condition. Lehtonen et al., 2008
An individual nest is not the same as a protected habitat
A nest is a small reproductive site; an essential fish habitat designation or marine protected-area rule applies at a broader scale. NOAA Fisheries describes essential fish habitat as waters and substrate needed for fish to spawn, breed, feed, or grow to maturity, including places such as seagrass beds and rocky reefs. Its mapping and management work accounts for particular species and life stages. NOAA Fisheries, Essential Fish Habitat
Seagrass and other submerged aquatic vegetation provide shelter, food, and places for reproduction. NOAA’s submerged aquatic vegetation page reports animal abundance in grassbeds as 10–100 times that over nearby sandy seafloor; the page does not state the year for that comparison, so it should be read as a reported comparison, not a universal constant. - Compact: Dimension: 7.9"x5.9"x5.9"; 1 Gallon tank; ideal for small spaces, aquarium beginners caring for a single betta, a few shrimp, snails, or a tiny goldfish. Also works as a temporary hospital tank, quarantine tank, or desktop decor (After deducting the filter part, the actual usable volume is approximately 0.8 gal and it will further decrease after adding substrate)
- Customizable Lighting: features a 3-color LED hood with 10 adjustable brightness levels to showcase your fish and tank décor
- Self-Cleaning Filtration: Hidden filter keeps tank clean for easier maintenance. Note: Clean filter sponge and pump regularly to avoid clogging; regular water changes are required — this small tank does not support zero-maintenance use
- Thoughtful Design: its top feeding hole allows for easy feeding without removing the lid; four silicone feet for stability and quiet operation
- Complete Starter Kit: 1x 1 gallon Fish Tank, 1x Filter Sponge, 1x Adjustable Water Pump, 1x LED Hood (Note: The light requires a power transformer (not included) for use. Compatible transformers include 5V 0.5A, 5V 1A, 5V 1.5A, and 5V 2A)
Deep-sea coral grounds are another example of habitat-scale importance: NOAA identifies them as spawning habitat for fish including grouper, snapper, sea bass, and rockfish, as well as for shrimp, lobsters, and crabs. Bottom trawling can damage these delicate habitats. NOAA describes restrictions on fishing gear that touches the seafloor in the Frank R. Lautenberg Deep-Sea Coral Protection Area. NOAA Fisheries, Deep-Sea Coral Habitat
More generally, seafloor organisms and sediment features create physical complexity that can provide refuge, nursery areas, and food. The effects of trawling or dredging vary with gear type, habitat, disturbance frequency, and recovery conditions, so impacts cannot be reduced to a single rule for every seafloor. National Academies, Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat, 2002

United States: essential fish habitat measures
NOAA Fisheries works with regional fishery management councils to identify, describe, and map essential fish habitat. Councils may use that information to restrict certain fishing gear in sensitive areas. Federal agencies must consult NOAA when proposed work may adversely affect essential fish habitat, allowing impacts to be minimized or avoided. The measures that apply depend on the species, location, and relevant management plan. NOAA Fisheries, Essential Fish Habitat

England: seagrass guidance and Marine Conservation Zones
England’s Marine Management Organisation published seagrass protection and recovery guidance on September 25, 2026. It explains that intentionally picking, collecting, cutting, uprooting, or destroying a plant that is a protected feature of a Marine Conservation Zone is an offence under section 140 of the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009. This applies to the specified protected feature and designation; it should not be assumed to describe the law in all UK waters or elsewhere. What protection means for a fish nest
Habitat rules can address physical damage, development impacts, or fishing gear, and some programs support habitat recovery. They do not necessarily protect each nest individually. To understand what applies at a particular site, check the relevant jurisdiction, habitat designation, and management authority: a mapped habitat area, a gear restriction, a project consultation, and a protected-area rule are different tools with different scopes.
