M3E Canvas is a free, open-source browser editor for designing Material 3 Expressive app screens and converting those designs into prompts for AI coding agents. You place real Material 3 components on phone or desktop frames, connect screens into a tappable flow, tune the theme and motion, then copy a concise brief for tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI or Cursor. It runs as a static client-side app: no account or project server is required, designs are saved in the browser, and optional AI assistance uses a provider key that you supply.
The useful distinction is that M3E Canvas is a visual specification tool, not a finished-app generator. Its value is reducing ambiguity before “vibe coding”: the agent receives component choices, layout intent, navigation behavior and platform context instead of a prose description alone.

What is M3E Canvas?
M3E Canvas is a browser-based sketchpad built around Material 3 Expressive components. The official README describes it as a free, open-source way to sketch screens and turn them into vibe-coding prompts. Rather than drawing arbitrary rectangles, you compose interfaces from recognizable Material 3 parts, set their properties, connect screens and export a design brief.
The result sits between a wireframe and a code specification. It is more concrete than a text prompt because the canvas records component kinds, hierarchy, positioning, theme choices and interactions. It is less final than production code because an AI coding agent still has to implement the result and resolve details that the brief does not define.

What “Expressive” means here
The component set includes standard controls and newer expressive patterns such as shape-morphing loading indicators and wavy progress indicators. Theme controls cover color, typography, corner shape and motion, so you can specify not just where an element sits but also the visual character it should have.
How does the M3E Canvas workflow work?
The workflow has three stages: sketch the screens, connect and preview the flow, then export a prompt. You can stop after any stage, but completing all three gives an agent the most actionable context.
1. Sketch screens on phone or desktop frames
Create a phone or desktop frame and drag parts from the library onto it. The editor aligns placements to a 4dp grid. Magnetic connections help compatible neighboring components line up, which is useful for bars, fields, buttons and list structures that should share edges.
Frames can scroll, and layers and groups let you control stacking, overlap and multi-selection movement. A tidy function snaps bars and floating actions into common positions and arranges other content on 16dp margins. Those conventions give the exported brief a stronger layout signal than a free-form sketch.
2. Add content and component behavior
Select a part to edit its text, style, size, alignment and tap behavior. The library includes buttons, icon buttons, floating action buttons and menus, split buttons, chips, top app bars, navigation bars and rails, floating toolbars, tabs, search bars, cards, list items, boxes, bottom sheets, dialogs, snackbars, text fields, dropdowns, switches, checkboxes, radio buttons, sliders, date and time pickers, text, images, carousels, camera and map placeholders, dividers, progress indicators and loading states.
These are specifications for the intended interface, not connected production widgets. A camera or map placeholder, for example, tells the coding agent what region of the screen should exist; it does not provide a camera feed or map service.

3. Connect screens and preview interactions
Assign tap or swipe actions to open another screen or go back. For each navigation action, choose a transition: slide, fade, expand or none. Preview the flow to check whether the starting screen, gesture direction and destination make sense before exporting.
4. Export the coding brief
Export either the complete design or a single screen. Include behavior notes, choose Android or web as the target, and edit the generated text before copying it into your coding agent. A whole-design export is appropriate when navigation and shared theme decisions matter; a single-screen export is easier to keep focused while implementing one route.
What components and styling controls are available?
M3E Canvas is useful when the implementation needs more than a static visual. The parts library covers common application structure, input, feedback and content, while the theme panel captures system-wide decisions.
| Area | Documented controls | Why an agent needs it |
|---|---|---|
| Navigation | Top app bars, navigation bars, rails, tabs, floating toolbars, bottom sheets and dialogs | Defines hierarchy, destinations and transient surfaces |
| Actions | Buttons, icon buttons, FABs, FAB menus, split buttons and chips | Communicates primary, secondary and contextual actions |
| Input | Text fields, dropdowns, switches, checkboxes, radio buttons, sliders, date and time pickers | Shows control type and expected interaction model |
| Content | Cards, list items, text, images, carousels, dividers and boxes | Provides repeatable content regions and grouping |
| Feedback and status | Snackbars, dialogs, shape-morphing loading indicators and wavy progress indicators | Specifies loading, confirmation and progress states |
| Placeholders | Camera and map regions | Reserves space for platform or service integrations |
Theme and motion
The theme panel supports a color palette or seed color, light or dark mode, contrast, corner shape, fonts, dynamic color and either standard or expressive spring motion. These choices travel with the visual specification, helping an agent avoid substituting a generic theme for the one you intended.
How do I turn a canvas into a prompt for Claude Code, Codex or another agent?
Use the export controls after the screen and flow are stable. The following sequence keeps the generated brief tied to implementation decisions rather than unfinished experiments.
- Finish the visual pass: check frame type, scrolling, alignment, grouping and layer order. Use the 4dp grid and tidy function where appropriate.
- Verify interactions: select each interactive component and confirm its tap or swipe destination, back action and transition.
- Choose scope: export one screen for a focused implementation or the whole design for a multi-screen feature.
- Add behavior notes: state what should happen on submission, loading, dismissal, validation, back navigation or swipe. The editor can record tap behavior, but concise notes resolve intent that a visual alone cannot.
- Select the platform: choose Android or web so the brief frames the implementation target.
- Edit the text: remove assumptions, add data or accessibility requirements, and clarify anything the canvas cannot express.
- Paste into the agent: provide the brief to your chosen coding tool and ask it to implement the specified flow, then compare the result with the canvas.
The export is a starting specification, not a guarantee that generated code will match every pixel. Treat the first agent response as an implementation pass to review against the frames and previewed navigation.

Can an AI agent generate an M3E Canvas design?
Yes. The official agent.md guide documents a beta contract in which an entire design is one JSON document. An agent can write that document and return it for you to open in M3E Canvas, refine visually and convert into a coding prompt.
What the JSON document contains
The documented fields include a title, brief, platform, palette, theme, frames, groups, navigation actions and component kinds. Phone frames are specified as 412 × 892, while desktop frames are 1280 × 800. Keeping those dimensions consistent gives an agent a concrete coordinate system when it generates a document.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe guide recommends keeping the document under about 100 KB. A share link is created by raw-deflate compressing the JSON and encoding it with base64url in a #docz= hash. Because the document is carried in the link fragment, the design can be opened without a hosted project record.
Why the format is beta
The guide explicitly labels the schema beta: fields may be added, while existing fields retain their meaning. Build workflows should therefore treat the current documentation as the contract for this version, not as a permanently frozen API. If you generate documents programmatically, preserve unknown fields when possible and validate the result by opening it in the editor before relying on it.
Does M3E Canvas require an account, backend or paid plan?
No account, subscription or server-side project is required according to the official README. It is distributed as a static Next.js export that runs in the browser, and designs are autosaved locally.
That architecture has practical consequences. Local autosave is convenient for a solo workflow but is not the same as cloud storage, team history or server backups. A browser profile or device change should not be assumed to carry your work unless you preserve a share link or another copy of the design.

How optional AI assistance handles keys
AI assistance is optional and follows a bring-your-own-provider-key model. The README says the request goes directly from the browser to the provider, rather than through an M3E Canvas server-side proxy. Use a key with permissions and spending limits appropriate for client-side use, and avoid treating the canvas as a secret-management system.
What should I check before handing a design to an agent?
A brief is most useful when the canvas answers the questions that commonly cause generated interfaces to drift.
- Target: Android or web is selected and matches the repository you want the agent to modify.
- Frame: phone versus desktop is intentional, with the documented dimensions used when generating JSON.
- State coverage: loading, empty, error, success and dismissed states are represented where they affect layout.
- Navigation: every tap or swipe has a destination, a back behavior or an explicit note that it is nonfunctional.
- Theme: color, contrast, light or dark mode, font, corner shape and motion choices are deliberate.
- Grouping: repeated or related elements are grouped so their relationship survives export.
- Content: placeholder text is replaced with realistic lengths when wrapping and density matter.
- Scope: one-screen exports do not accidentally omit a required destination or shared component.
How does M3E Canvas differ from a generic wireframing workflow?
The distinction is not that M3E Canvas replaces every design tool; it is that its specification is intentionally aligned with Material 3 and agent handoff. Evaluate it against the dimensions that matter for your project.
| Decision axis | M3E Canvas provides | Question to ask before choosing it |
|---|---|---|
| Material fidelity | Real Material 3 Expressive component types, theme controls and motion options | Does the product already use Material 3, or would another design system be more appropriate? |
| Prompt export | Concise briefs for a whole design or one screen, with behavior notes and platform selection | Will the implementation team benefit from a visual specification alongside prose? |
| Interaction modeling | Tap and swipe links, back actions, and slide, fade, expand or no transition | Are the important product decisions about navigation and state transitions? |
| Target platforms | Android or web export context; phone and desktop frames | Does your target fit those two contexts? |
| Storage and collaboration | Local browser autosave and hash-based sharing; no documented hosted workspace | Do you need accounts, permissions, comments, version history or simultaneous editing? |
| Agent interoperability | JSON document generation and a documented share-link encoding | Can your workflow keep a beta schema under the roughly 100 KB guidance? |
| Theme depth | Palette or seed color, contrast, fonts, dynamic color, corner shape and spring motion | Do these system-level choices need to be explicit in the handoff? |
What are the main limitations and failure modes?
Local data can be mistaken for backup
Because autosave is local, clearing site data, changing browser profiles or moving devices can remove the copy you were relying on. Preserve an encoded share link or export the design document as part of your project records.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA visual does not define application logic
A canvas can show a switch, form or dialog and connect it to another screen, but it does not define authentication, network calls, validation rules, persistence or business permissions. Put those requirements in behavior notes or in the agent prompt.
Large or overly detailed JSON may not travel well
The agent guide’s roughly 100 KB recommendation matters when generating share links. Reduce unnecessary groups, repeated placeholder content or unused screens before asking an agent to produce a document near that limit.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Beta schema changes require validation
Generated JSON can fail if it relies on undocumented fields or assumptions from an earlier version. Open agent-created documents in the current editor and correct any unsupported component kind or property before using the export.
Client-side keys need care
Direct browser-to-provider requests mean the provider key participates in a client-side workflow. Use a restricted key where the provider supports it, monitor usage and do not place credentials in a design document or share hash.
Who benefits most from M3E Canvas?
It is a strong fit for developers who already intend to use Material 3 and want an agent to implement a clearly bounded flow. Product designers can use it to demonstrate interaction and theme intent without writing code, while developers can generate a structured starting point instead of rebuilding a mockup from screenshots.
It is a weaker fit when the project needs a hosted, multi-user design repository, formal design-review history, advanced illustration or a design system unrelated to Material 3. In those cases, M3E Canvas can still serve as a focused handoff artifact, but it should not be mistaken for a complete collaboration suite.
What is the practical takeaway?
Use M3E Canvas when you want Material 3 Expressive screens, interaction flow and theme decisions to arrive together in an AI coding prompt. Build the canvas with realistic content, verify every link in preview, export the smallest useful scope, and keep a copy of the beta JSON or share link outside the browser. That process gives an agent a visual contract while leaving application architecture and business logic for engineering review.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can M3E Canvas produce working Android or web code by itself?
No. It produces a visual design document and a prompt-style brief. A separate coding agent must implement the components, data handling, accessibility behavior and application logic.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can I use M3E Canvas for a team design review?
You can share a design through its encoded link, but the documented workflow does not provide accounts, permissions, comments or simultaneous cloud editing. Teams should agree on how to archive links and revisions.
What happens if I exceed the recommended JSON size?
The agent guide recommends staying under about 100 KB for a design document. If a generated document becomes too large for reliable sharing, remove unused screens or simplify repeated content before opening it in the editor.
Are Material 3 components in the canvas connected to Android libraries?
They are visual component specifications. The canvas does not install dependencies or bind a button, map, camera or picker to your app; your coding agent and project code must choose and configure the implementation.
