Short answer: choose the Gearotons M17 when you need a NEMA-17 mechanical format, an integrated closed-loop motor, RS-485 control, and an openly licensed hardware and software stack. Choose a DYNAMIXEL actuator only after selecting an exact model whose torque definition, speed, voltage, control modes, communication layer, and mounting pattern match your design. “DYNAMIXEL” is a broad family, not one actuator, so a family-wide winner cannot be stated fairly.
The M17 project publishes four sizes—M17-34, M17-40, M17-48, and M17-60—with holding torque from 0.28 to 0.65 N·m. ROBOTIS documents DYNAMIXEL performance and interfaces by model. The comparison below separates what the M17 project actually specifies from decisions that require a particular DYNAMIXEL part number.

What are the M17 and DYNAMIXEL actually built to be?
The M17 and DYNAMIXEL products solve a similar systems problem: they put motor control, sensing and communications into an actuator so a host controller can command motion and read status over a bus. Their mechanical assumptions, protocols, licensing and product scope are different enough that “replacement” is not automatic.
M17 is a specific NEMA-17 integrated servomotor
The M17 project describes its product as a NEMA-17 integrated servomotor. A motor, closed-loop driver, motion controller and magnetic encoder are packaged together. The project publishes hardware, firmware and software under the MIT license, along with datasheets, libraries and test scripts in its repository. That makes M17 an open-source actuator project rather than merely a motor sold with a proprietary controller.

NEMA-17 refers to the mechanical frame convention used by the project; it does not describe every electrical or software characteristic. The M17 still needs its own power and serial-bus integration, and the project explicitly warns that it is not a STEP/DIR drop-in for an existing 3D-printer board.
DYNAMIXEL is a family, not a single specification
ROBOTIS uses DYNAMIXEL for a large family of integrated actuators. Depending on the model, the package can include a DC motor, controller, driver, sensor, reduction gear and network interface. ROBOTIS lists position, velocity and torque control, feedback and daisy-chain communication as family capabilities, but the available modes, sensor data, electrical interface and mechanical dimensions must be checked in the chosen model’s documentation.

Is M17 an alternative to DYNAMIXEL?
Yes, in the sense that M17 can be an open-source, networked actuator option for a new design. No, if “alternative” means a universal drop-in substitute. M17’s NEMA-17 frame, published holding-torque figures, RS-485 interface and MIT-licensed project are meaningful differentiators, but they do not make it mechanically or electrically interchangeable with every DYNAMIXEL model.
For an existing robot, start with the actuator already specified by its frame, output hardware, bus voltage and protocol. Replacing it with M17 may require a bracket, a different coupler, a power redesign, new firmware and a host-side driver. Conversely, fitting a DYNAMIXEL into a NEMA-17 design can require an adapter and a new command stack even when both devices are networked.
What M17 sizes and performance does the project publish?
The M17 project lists four lengths, holding-torque values and weights. These are project-published figures, not independently measured comparisons. “Holding torque” is a static rating; it should not be treated as continuous torque at speed or compared directly with a DYNAMIXEL stall, rated or continuous value unless the definitions and test conditions match.

The same project reports speeds of up to 560 RPM, an input range of 12–24 V and current of up to about 1.1 A. Those figures describe the project’s published envelope; they do not establish the speed or torque available simultaneously under a particular load, nor do they replace a thermal or power-budget calculation.

Why the torque numbers cannot be lined up with “DYNAMIXEL torque”
ROBOTIS directs users to model-specific performance data rather than publishing one torque figure for the entire DYNAMIXEL family. A comparison must identify the exact model and then record whether its number is stall, peak, rated, holding or continuous torque. Gear reduction, voltage, temperature and duty cycle also affect what a joint can sustain.
For a useful calculation, convert the joint’s required force and lever arm into torque, add a design margin, and compare that requirement with the same type of rating on both candidates. If the application needs continuous motion, a static holding number alone is insufficient; look for the model’s continuous-duty or thermal information.
How do the mechanical interfaces differ?
M17 starts from the NEMA-17 mounting convention and offers four published body lengths. A DYNAMIXEL actuator’s frame, bolt pattern, shaft or spline, and cable exit are model-specific. Similar overall dimensions do not guarantee that a shaft, horn or bracket will align.
Check the complete load path
- Record the available envelope, mounting-hole pattern, shaft or horn interface and allowable cable bend radius.
- Confirm that the output bearing and reduction stage are intended for the radial and axial loads in your mechanism; a motor’s torque number does not by itself describe bearing capacity.
- Include the actuator body and cable in moving-mass calculations. The M17 project lists weights from 210 to 470 g across its four variants.
- Design an adapter when changing families rather than drilling an existing bracket without checking edge distances and fastener engagement.
The M17 project’s NEMA-17 format can simplify reuse of stepper-oriented brackets, but its integrated electronics still need room for connectors and wiring. DYNAMIXEL’s model-specific horns and brackets can simplify a supported robot platform, provided the chosen model’s accessories match your joint.
Are M17 and DYNAMIXEL communication-compatible?
No. RS-485 is an electrical signaling method, not a guarantee that two devices share packet formats, baud rates, addressing or control tables. The M17 project states RS-485 communication at 230400 baud and describes daisy-chain support. A DYNAMIXEL model may use half-duplex TTL or RS-485 and its own protocol and settings.
Verify these bus details before wiring
- Physical layer: confirm RS-485 versus TTL and the transceiver or logic-level requirements.
- Voltage: check the actuator supply range and the host interface voltage separately; bus logic and motor power are not the same circuit.
- Baud rate: configure the host and every device for a supported rate. The M17 project’s stated 230400 baud should not be assumed for a DYNAMIXEL model.
- Packet protocol: identify framing, instruction bytes, checksum or CRC, device IDs and register addresses from the device documentation.
- Topology: plan daisy-chain wiring, termination and cable routing for the actual bus. A shared pair of wires does not make firmware interchangeable.
- Software: use the M17 API and libraries for M17 commands, or the appropriate ROBOTIS SDK and control table for the selected DYNAMIXEL.
ROBOTIS identifies U2D2 as a common USB-to-serial PC interface for DYNAMIXEL. Whether it is suitable depends on the target model’s physical layer and power arrangement; it is not a universal adapter for an arbitrary RS-485 device.
What control and feedback should a robot designer expect?
M17 integrates a closed-loop controller and magnetic encoder, so the project treats feedback and motion control as part of the actuator. The exact command set and feedback fields come from its API and datasheet. Plan around those documented commands instead of assuming that a familiar servo pulse, STEP/DIR signal or DYNAMIXEL register exists.

DYNAMIXEL control modes and feedback are model-specific and exposed through a control table and SDK. One model may offer a mode or sensor value another does not. Before writing motion software, list the required functions—position, velocity, torque or current control, limits, temperature, voltage and error reporting—and verify each against the chosen model’s control table.
Closed loop does not mean identical behavior
Both product families can close a feedback loop, but their encoder resolution, gear train, firmware limits, update behavior and error handling can differ. A controller tuned for one actuator may oscillate, saturate or respond slowly on another. Treat a family change as a control-system change, not only a wiring change.
How does the open-source model change the decision?
The M17 project says its hardware, firmware, libraries, datasheets and test scripts are MIT licensed. That can matter when you need to inspect electronics, modify firmware, reproduce a design or build a custom host library. It also gives a project team a clearer path to repair or adapt the stack, subject to its own engineering and manufacturing resources.
ROBOTIS provides SDKs, software resources and ROS support, and open-source repositories exist around DYNAMIXEL-based robots. Open software resources do not mean the actuator hardware has the same licensing, schematics or repair model as M17. Read the license and documentation for the particular component you plan to redistribute or modify.
Open source also transfers responsibility. You must validate the electrical design, connector pinout, firmware version, thermal behavior and production supply chain for your application. A proprietary ecosystem may offer a more standardized accessory and support path, while an open project may offer more visibility and control.
Which actuator should you choose for a new robot?
Choose by requirements rather than by the family name. The following branches keep the comparison within the evidence available for M17 and DYNAMIXEL.
M17 is the stronger fit when:
- Your mechanical design is based on a NEMA-17 mounting pattern and one of the four M17 lengths fits the envelope.
- You need the project’s published 0.28–0.65 N·m holding-torque range and can size the joint using the appropriate safety margin.
- A 12–24 V supply and the project’s stated maximum current of about 1.1 A fit your power budget.
- RS-485 at the project’s stated 230400 baud and its API are acceptable for the host controller.
- You value MIT-licensed hardware, firmware and software and are prepared to integrate the project rather than use a STEP/DIR drop-in.
- The actuator will operate indoors within the project-stated IP20 rating.
A DYNAMIXEL model is the stronger fit when:
- You can select a specific model whose torque, speed and duty-cycle data match the joint.
- The model’s mounting, output spline or horn and accessory ecosystem fit an existing ROBOTIS-based mechanism.
- You need a model’s documented control modes, feedback registers, SDK or ROS integration.
- Your design requires TTL or RS-485 and you can meet that model’s exact voltage, connector and protocol requirements.
- You prefer to work within a documented product family and can accept model-dependent hardware and licensing terms.
Neither branch is automatically cheaper, faster or more reliable. The supplied specifications do not provide a like-for-like price, life test or independent benchmark, so those claims should not be inferred.

How can you compare one DYNAMIXEL model with one M17 size?
Use this sequence before ordering hardware or writing control code.
- Define the joint: write the load, lever arm, required acceleration, operating cycle, allowable backlash and environmental conditions.
- Choose the M17 candidate: select M17-34, M17-40, M17-48 or M17-60 from the project’s length, weight and holding-torque figures. Mark the static rating as a project claim, not a measured result.
- Choose a DYNAMIXEL model: do not compare against the family name. Record the exact model number and revision from ROBOTIS documentation.
- Normalize torque: put both figures in N·m and label each as holding, stall, peak, rated or continuous. Reject a comparison that mixes definitions.
- Check speed under the real load: compare the documented speed condition and duty cycle. M17’s “up to 560 RPM” is a maximum report, not a promise of that speed at your joint torque.
- Check power: verify nominal and peak supply needs, current limits, wiring and supply capacity. M17’s 12–24 V and approximately 1.1 A project figures cannot stand in for a DYNAMIXEL model’s requirements.
- Check mechanics: overlay bolt holes, body envelope, output interface and bearing loads in CAD. Plan an adapter if they do not match.
- Check the bus and software: confirm physical layer, baud rate, packet protocol, IDs, control modes, feedback and host libraries before committing to a controller board.
- Check the environment: M17 is described for indoor IP20 use. Obtain the exact DYNAMIXEL model’s environmental rating rather than assuming the family shares one.
- Document the decision: keep the model number, firmware or protocol version, supply assumptions and torque definition with the robot’s bill of materials.
What does OpenMANIPULATOR-X show about a DYNAMIXEL-based system?
ROBOTIS’s OpenMANIPULATOR-X is an example of a complete DYNAMIXEL-based platform rather than a comparison actuator. Its documentation lists an XM430-W350-T actuator, 12 V input, five degrees of freedom including the gripper and a stated 500 g payload.
Those numbers describe the platform, not the standalone output capability of the XM430-W350-T. A 500 g payload includes the arm’s geometry, link masses, control limits and operating assumptions. It should not be copied into an M17 joint calculation or treated as a universal DYNAMIXEL rating.
What integration problems are most likely?
“The motor is connected but does not respond”
Check bus type, pinout, ground reference, supply voltage, baud rate and device ID first. An RS-485 transceiver connected to a TTL actuator, or a packet sent at the wrong protocol revision, can look like a dead motor.
“The replacement fits electrically but not mechanically”
Recheck the bolt pattern, body length, output interface and cable clearance. NEMA-17 describes M17’s frame convention; it does not make a DYNAMIXEL housing or spline dimensionally identical.
Recommended Free Tools
“The joint stalls despite a favorable torque number”
Confirm whether the number was holding, peak or continuous torque and under what voltage and temperature. Include acceleration torque, gravity, friction and a safety margin; a static holding figure is not a complete motion specification.
“The host board expects STEP/DIR”
The M17 project warns that it is not a STEP/DIR drop-in. Use a host or adapter that implements the M17 serial API, or select an actuator and controller combination designed for the board’s native interface.

“Several actuators interfere on one cable”
Audit IDs, packet addressing, bus topology and termination. Daisy-chain support does not remove the need for unique addresses and a protocol that every node understands.
“The actuator overheats in a short demonstration”
Do not infer thermal suitability from no-load motion. Recalculate duty cycle, current, load and cooling using the exact model documentation, and treat the M17 project’s current and torque figures as published limits rather than independent thermal validation.

What information is still needed before buying?
A responsible purchase decision needs details that the family names cannot provide. For M17, obtain the current project datasheet and API revision, connector pinout, mounting drawing and any operating limits beyond the headline figures. For DYNAMIXEL, obtain the exact model’s e-Manual, control table, performance graph, connector and mounting documentation.

Prices and plans are not stated in the available product information, so total cost should be calculated from current quotations, power electronics, brackets, cabling, controller hardware and engineering time rather than from a guessed actuator price.
How we frame the choice
This comparison uses the criteria that determine whether an integrated actuator can actually serve a robot: mechanical fit, correctly defined torque and speed, power, communication, control and feedback, environment, software access and lifecycle responsibility. M17 is treated as one defined open-source product line; DYNAMIXEL is treated as a family that must be narrowed to a model before numerical comparison.
The practical result is a decision framework, not a universal ranking. M17 is compelling when its NEMA-17 format, open stack and published operating envelope align with the design. DYNAMIXEL is compelling when a specific model and its ecosystem satisfy the joint’s documented requirements. In either case, record the assumptions and verify them against the current manufacturer or project documentation before fabrication.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I control an M17 with a standard hobby-servo PWM signal?
The M17 project describes a serially controlled integrated servomotor and warns that it is not a STEP/DIR drop-in. A PWM servo signal should not be assumed to work; use the project’s documented API and interface hardware.
Does an RS-485 adapter make M17 and DYNAMIXEL interchangeable?
No. The adapter only addresses the electrical layer. Baud rate, packet protocol, addressing, register map, voltage and software support still have to match the actuator.
Can I use the OpenMANIPULATOR-X payload figure to size an M17 joint?
No. The stated 500 g is a platform payload for a five-degree-of-freedom arm with an XM430-W350-T actuator, 12 V input and a particular geometry. It is not a standalone actuator rating or an M17 specification.
Is M17 suitable for outdoor robotics?
The M17 project states an IP20, indoor-use rating. Outdoor deployment would require a separate enclosure and environmental design review; do not treat the open-source license or serial bus as environmental protection.
