Hexproof does not make Llanowar Elves immune to board wipes. It stops opponents from targeting the creature, but many sweepers affect every creature without targeting. Match the response to the spell’s wording: indestructible can answer “destroy” and lethal damage; phasing or a suitable blink effect can dodge effects that destroy, exile, or otherwise affect all creatures; countering can stop a counterable sweeper before it resolves. For sacrifice, bounce, and -X/-X effects, hexproof and indestructible may not help at all.

The practical rule is to read the exact removal text before spending a protection spell. A one-mana mana creature is valuable, but saving it is not always worth using the only answer that could protect a whole board or a more important engine.

How do I protect Llanowar Elves from removal?

First identify whether the opposing effect targets Llanowar Elves or affects it without targeting. Targeting defenses answer only the first kind. For a mass effect, look at what it does: destroy, deal damage, exile, return creatures to hand, make a player sacrifice, or reduce toughness. Those verbs describe different ways a creature can leave the battlefield, and a defense against one is not automatically a defense against the others.

Hexproof is defined as preventing a permanent or player from being targeted by spells or abilities an opponent controls, according to Wizards of the Coast’s keyword glossary. Under the Comprehensive Rules, a permanent with hexproof cannot be the target of spells or abilities opponents control. The controller of Llanowar Elves can still target it with their own spells or abilities; shroud is broader and prevents all players from targeting it.

Ward is another targeting-related defense, but it is not the same as hexproof: it makes an opponent pay an additional cost when they target the permanent. If they can and choose to pay, the targeted spell or ability can still affect it. Protection from a particular quality may also prevent targeting by sources of that quality, but it is limited to the stated quality.

When checking a card, read the effect literally rather than relying on how it is described at the table. “Destroy target creature” names a target; “destroy all creatures” does not. An effect can still be selective in practice, or hit your board hard, without targeting a creature under the rules. Conversely, a targeted removal spell can be stopped by hexproof even if your opponent intends to use it as part of a larger plan. The useful question is not “Is this aimed at my elf?” but “Does this spell or ability target it?”

Does hexproof stop board wipes in MTG?

Usually, no. Hexproof stops an opponent from targeting Llanowar Elves; it does not stop a spell that says to destroy, exile, or otherwise affect all creatures without using the word “target.” Check the wipe’s text rather than relying on the word “protection” as if it meant untouchable.

For example, “destroy target creature” targets, so an opponent-controlled spell with that wording cannot target a creature with hexproof. “Destroy all creatures” does not target a particular creature, so hexproof does not prevent it. The same distinction applies to abilities: the presence or absence of the word “target” matters, not whether the effect feels aimed at your board.

Hexproof is still useful against targeted removal, but it is a narrow defense. It does not prevent a creature from being affected by a non-targeting effect, and it does not change what happens when the creature’s toughness reaches zero or its controller is instructed to sacrifice it.

Shroud is even less flexible for a creature you control: it prevents you from targeting that creature as well as preventing opponents from targeting it. Ward is not a guarantee either. It can make a targeted answer more expensive, but it does not make the target illegal if the opponent pays the ward cost. Protection from a stated quality is similarly conditional: it can interfere with targeting from sources of that quality, but it is not a general answer to every effect that happens to affect your creature.

Does indestructible protect against Wrath of God?

Yes, indestructible protects Llanowar Elves from a spell that says “destroy all creatures,” such as Wrath of God, while the creature has indestructible as that effect resolves. It also prevents destruction from lethal damage. It does not protect against every way a spell can remove a creature.

The Comprehensive Rules define “destroy” as moving a permanent from the battlefield to its owner’s graveyard, and say that an indestructible permanent cannot be destroyed. See the Magic: The Gathering Comprehensive Rules (the researched rules version is effective September 25, 2026). That same rules source distinguishes destruction from other outcomes, so “indestructible” should not be read as a universal shield.

  • Destroy effect: Indestructible prevents the destruction.
  • Lethal damage: Indestructible prevents damage-based destruction.
  • Exile or bounce: Indestructible does not stop the creature from being exiled or returned to its owner’s hand.
  • Sacrifice: Indestructible does not stop a player from sacrificing the creature.
  • Toughness reduced to zero or less: Indestructible does not prevent the state-based action that puts the creature into its owner’s graveyard.

That last case is particularly easy to misread. A creature with toughness 0 or less is put into its owner’s graveyard as a state-based action; this is not destruction. An effect giving creatures -X/-X can therefore remove Llanowar Elves even if it has indestructible.

Think of indestructible as answering a specific game action, not as preventing a zone change. If a sweeper resolves and tries to destroy the creature, indestructible can stop that result. If it instead moves the creature to exile or its owner’s hand, asks its controller to sacrifice it, or leaves it with toughness 0 or less, indestructible does not replace that instruction with survival. The rules distinguish “destroy” from those other outcomes, and the wording determines which one applies.

What protects mana dorks from different kinds of sweepers?

Use the effect’s removal axis to choose a defense. The table summarizes what each common answer is meant to address; the exact card text and timing still matter.

Threat wording or effect What may answer it What not to assume
“Target” removal Hexproof, shroud, ward, or protection from the relevant quality can interfere with targeting. Ward may be paid; shroud also prevents your own targeting. Confirm the spell actually targets.
“Destroy all creatures” Indestructible, phasing, a suitable blink effect, or countering the sweeper before it resolves. Hexproof does not stop a non-targeting destroy effect.
Damage to all creatures Indestructible can survive lethal damage; protection from the source’s relevant quality can prevent its damage. Protection or indestructible does not necessarily stop other parts of the spell.
Exile all creatures or mass bounce Phasing, a suitable blink effect, or countering the sweeper before it resolves. Hexproof and indestructible do not stop untargeted exile or bounce.
A player sacrifices creatures Phasing or a suitable effect that removes the creature from the threatened situation before resolution may help. Sacrifice is not destruction; indestructible does not prevent it.
Creatures get -X/-X Phasing, a suitable blink effect, or countering the spell may help, depending on the situation. Indestructible does not prevent the toughness-zero state-based action.

Protection is also specific, not universal. It can prevent targeting by sources with the stated quality and prevent damage from those sources; it also restricts relevant Auras and Equipment. It does not automatically stop every spell affecting all creatures. Protection from red, for instance, is relevant only to effects from sources with the specified quality, and it does not make an untargeted non-damage effect disappear simply because it affects the protected creature.

That distinction matters most with damage sweepers. If a qualifying source deals damage to Llanowar Elves, protection from that source’s quality can prevent that damage, while indestructible can let the creature survive lethal damage. Neither label should be treated as a complete answer to every instruction on the same spell. A spell may deal damage and also do something else, so check all of its text, not only the part that would normally kill the elf.

Against an exile effect or mass bounce, the usual targeted defenses do not solve the problem if the effect does not target. Phasing, a suitably timed blink effect, or countering a counterable spell addresses the threat on a different axis. For sacrifice, the key is that the player is instructed to sacrifice rather than the creature being destroyed. For -X/-X, the crucial check is the creature’s resulting toughness: if it is 0 or less, the state-based action applies even if it is indestructible.

Which response should I hold up against a sweeper?

Choose the response that covers the threat you expect and the amount of your board at risk. The options are strategically different: a keyword can leave the creature in place, phasing can make it temporarily absent from the effect, a blink effect can move it away and return it, a counterspell can stop a counterable spell, and redundancy can help you rebuild if protection is unavailable.

Before committing mana or a card, check two things: what kind of object is causing the threat, and when your answer must work. A counterspell is for a spell on the stack, and it cannot answer an ability merely because that ability functions like a wipe. A creature-saving effect needs to take effect before the relevant sweeper resolves; a blink effect that returns the elf before the sweeper resolves does not keep it safe from that sweeper. Exact text, timing, and scope matter as much as the name of the defense.

Use indestructible for destruction, not as a general shield

If the likely sweeper says “destroy,” indestructible is the direct keyword answer. It can also cover lethal damage. It is a poor answer to an exile wipe, mass bounce, sacrifice instruction, or toughness reduction to zero, so do not spend it without checking the threat’s wording.

Its advantage is that it can let the elf remain on the battlefield through the destruction event. Its limitation is equally important: it does not prevent the spell from resolving, and it does not stop other instructions that are not destruction. If the opposing effect both destroys creatures and includes another relevant instruction, evaluate that other instruction separately instead of assuming indestructible covers the whole card.

Use phasing or a suitable blink effect to avoid the effect

Phasing and blink effects are not just stronger versions of hexproof: they use a different approach. They can protect against some non-targeting effects because Llanowar Elves is not in the same position to be affected when the sweeper resolves. Their exact wording and timing determine whether they work, so check whether the effect phases the creature out or moves it away before resolution. A blink effect that returns the creature before the sweeper resolves would not protect it from that sweeper.

These options can matter when the threat is exile or bounce rather than destruction, since indestructible does not stop those outcomes. They are not interchangeable with one another in every situation: examine the specific effect and make sure the creature is away from the threatened effect at the right time. Likewise, do not assume an effect that protects one creature also covers every mana creature you control; check its scope before choosing what to save.

Counter a counterable sweeper before it resolves

A counterspell can stop a sweeper that is a spell and can be countered, rather than trying to make one creature survive it. This can preserve more of your board, but it is not a universal answer: some effects are abilities rather than spells, and some spells cannot be countered. Keep the distinction in mind when deciding whether to hold up a counter or a creature-specific defense.

This is a broader answer when several important permanents are exposed, but it asks you to have the right response available and use it at the right time. If the wipe has already resolved, a counterspell cannot undo it. If the effect is an ability rather than a counterable spell, choose a different defense or plan to rebuild.

Use redundancy when protection costs too much

Llanowar Elves costs one mana, and losing it early can slow a deck’s development. But using a scarce protection card solely to save one mana creature can be a poor exchange if the same card could protect several creatures or a key engine. When a sweeper is not imminent, consider replacing the mana source, deploying multiple mana creatures, or keeping a route to rebuild instead of committing every protection resource to one elf.

Redundancy does not mean that a wipe is harmless. It means your plan does not depend entirely on a single one-mana creature remaining in play. If the opponent has represented a sweeper, consider whether adding more creatures makes the likely loss worse, or whether you can preserve resources for a later turn. If no suitable protection is available, being able to rebuild can be better than spending a narrow answer on one mana creature while leaving a more important permanent exposed.

How do I keep Llanowar Elves alive in Commander?

In Commander, the same rules apply: identify the effect, then choose whether to protect the elf, protect a wider board, or accept the loss and rebuild. Because a sweeper can threaten several permanents at once, assess the value of everything exposed rather than treating Llanowar Elves as the only relevant object.

  1. Read the opposing card’s exact text. Look for “target,” then identify whether the effect destroys, deals damage, exiles, returns, sacrifices, or gives -X/-X.
  2. Match the answer to the verb. Use targeting defenses only against targeting; indestructible against destruction or lethal damage; and phasing, a suitable blink effect, or a counterspell where the effect otherwise bypasses those defenses.
  3. Check the timing and scope. A response must happen before the relevant effect resolves, and the protection effect must cover Llanowar Elves at that moment. For a counterspell, confirm the threat is a counterable spell.
  4. Compare the cost of saving it with the cost of losing it. If the elf is your only mana source, its early loss may matter more. If a response could save a larger board or essential engine, spending it on one creature may be inefficient.
  5. Keep a rebuild option. If no appropriate answer is available, avoid putting every mana creature or valuable permanent at risk when the opponent has represented a wipe.

In practical terms, do not evaluate the exchange by the elf alone. Ask whether the mana it would provide this turn is important, whether the proposed response also protects a larger board, and whether you have another way to develop if the creature is lost. The answers depend on the situation; the rules do not make one protection keyword the correct choice for every Commander table.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single best protection keyword for every deck or every table. The most useful plan is a mix of answers that cover different removal axes, plus enough redundancy that losing one early mana creature does not end your development.

What is the safest rule of thumb?

Read the exact removal text and decide whether it targets, destroys, deals damage, exiles, bounces, sacrifices, or reduces toughness. Hexproof is for opposing targeting, indestructible is for destruction and lethal damage, and neither is a synonym for “cannot be removed.” When a wipe bypasses both, look to phasing, an appropriate blink effect, countering the spell, or rebuilding.

Then check whether your chosen answer covers the whole threat or just one part of it. Protection is tied to the stated quality; ward can be paid; shroud can prevent your own targeting; indestructible does not stop sacrifice or toughness reaching zero; and phasing or blink must happen at the right time. The most reliable habit is to match the defense to the actual wording instead of relying on a keyword to do more than it says.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cast a protection spell after a board wipe is announced?

If the wipe is a spell, you can generally respond while it is still on the stack, before it resolves; the protection effect has to resolve in time and cover the creature against that wipe. Check the response spell’s own timing and wording, because a defense that only stops targeting will not change an untargeted wipe’s effect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a board wipe affect Llanowar Elves I play afterward?

A spell affects the permanents present when it resolves, not creatures that enter the battlefield later. If you wait until after the wipe has resolved to cast Llanowar Elves, that earlier spell will not retroactively affect it.

Can one protection effect save more than one mana creature?

That depends on the protection effect’s text: some apply to a single creature, while others cover multiple creatures or a broader group. Check the number and type of objects it protects before choosing whether to spend it on Llanowar Elves alone.

Does indestructible save Llanowar Elves from -X/-X?

Not if the effect reduces its toughness to 0 or less. The creature is put into its owner’s graveyard as a state-based action; that is not destruction, so indestructible does not prevent it.

Does shroud let me target my own Llanowar Elves?

No. Shroud prevents all players from targeting the creature, including its controller. Hexproof only prevents opponents from targeting it, so its controller may still target it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does ward make targeted removal impossible?

No. Ward makes an opponent pay an additional cost when they target the permanent. If the opponent pays, the targeted spell or ability can still affect it.

Does protection from a color stop every wipe of that color?

No. Protection is limited to its stated quality and does not automatically stop every spell that affects all creatures. It can prevent targeting by sources with that quality and prevent relevant damage, but check the wipe’s exact effect and source.
