Alternatives to LiteLLM include Bifrost, Portkey, Kong AI Gateway, Agent Router, TrueFoundry, Cloudflare AI Gateway, Vercel AI Gateway, OpenRouter, Helicone, and Respan. There is no established universal winner: first decide whether you need a self-hosted gateway, managed model access, governance, observability, or a replacement for only part of LiteLLM.

LiteLLM’s documented baseline combines a Python SDK and a self-hosted, OpenAI-compatible gateway for multiple model providers, with features including routing, retries, fallbacks, virtual keys, budgets, rate limits, and cost tracking. The names above are a shortlist from secondary comparisons, not a verified ranking or confirmation that every product replaces that full set of functions.

What should you look for in a LiteLLM alternative?

Start by defining the job LiteLLM does in your system. An alternative might replace request routing, provide a managed way to access models, add governance or observability, or cover several of those needs. Treat these as separate requirements: a product that solves one does not automatically replace the rest of your gateway stack.

LiteLLM’s documented capabilities provide a useful baseline for a comparison. Its Python SDK and self-hosted OpenAI-compatible gateway provide a common interface for multiple providers; its documented gateway functions include retries, fallbacks, routing, virtual keys, budgets, rate limits, and cost tracking. Check the current documentation for the exact behavior your application depends on before using this as a complete feature checklist.

Identify the part you actually need to replace

  • Request routing: You need a common layer that sends requests to more than one provider, potentially with retry, fallback, or load-balancing behavior.
  • Managed model access: You want an account or service that provides access to models, rather than only a proxy that routes requests using your provider credentials.
  • Governance: You need controls such as keys, budgets, rate limits, or access policies.
  • Observability: You need request records, cost attribution, tracing, or debugging tools.
  • Operating model: You want to change who hosts, maintains, or supports the routing layer.

Write down which of these are required, which are optional, and which are already handled elsewhere. That avoids choosing a product based on a broad “AI gateway” label when your real requirement is narrower—or assuming that a routing alternative includes the governance and monitoring you currently rely on.

Which LiteLLM alternatives are worth investigating?

Secondary comparisons name the products below as alternatives or AI gateway options. The available evidence does not establish a reliable ranking or verified, current product-by-product feature comparison, so use this list to start an evaluation rather than to make a final selection.

The comparison sources group products around themes such as self-hosting, managed model catalogs, enterprise controls, observability, and fit with an existing vendor ecosystem. Those themes are useful questions to ask, but they do not establish which named vendor has a particular capability, price, model count, security certification, or latency. Confirm those details in the vendor’s current primary documentation and terms.

Should you choose a self-hosted or managed gateway?

This is a first-order decision because it changes who operates the gateway and where requests are processed. A self-hosted deployment may offer more control over the gateway’s deployment environment; a managed service can shift some operating work to a vendor. Neither choice, by itself, proves where every part of a request is processed or what data-handling commitments apply.

Questions for a self-hosted deployment

  • Can you run it in the environment your organization permits, and who will maintain upgrades, availability, and incident response?
  • Where are provider credentials stored, and how are access, rotation, and revocation handled?
  • Which logs or traces are retained, where are they stored, and who can access them?
  • Does the deployment support the routing, retry, and fallback behavior required by your application?

Questions for a managed service

  • Does it route requests made with your own provider credentials, offer managed model access, or support both? Do not infer the answer from the product category.
  • Which parties process request content and operational metadata, and what retention and deletion terms apply?
  • Can you export the logs or usage data you need, and can you keep the same controls if you later move away?
  • What happens to requests when the service, a provider, or a selected model is unavailable?

For either deployment model, ask for the current service terms and technical documentation that apply to your region and plan. The available comparisons do not settle vendors’ current deployment availability, licensing, certifications, or data-handling specifics.

How do you compare routing, credentials, governance, and observability?

Compare a candidate against real requirements, not a marketing feature list. For every capability, define the expected behavior and the evidence your team needs to confirm it.

Evaluation area Questions to answer Evidence to request or test
Provider credentials and billing Can you use your own provider keys? Is managed access also available? Who bills for model usage and gateway service? Credential setup instructions, billing documentation, and a test account or representative configuration.
Routing Can requests be directed to the providers and models your application needs? Can selection happen at the request level if required? Configuration examples and a test that confirms the chosen destination for representative requests.
Retries and fallbacks Which errors trigger a retry or fallback? Can you control the destination and avoid inappropriate retries? Documented behavior and tests for timeouts, provider errors, and unavailable models.
Governance Are keys, budgets, rate limits, and access controls available at the scope you need? Current product documentation and tests that confirm limits are enforced as expected.
Observability Can you attribute requests and costs, inspect failures, and trace requests across the system? Sample logs or traces, export options, retention details, and access controls.
Operations and commercial fit Who operates the gateway? What support, license, metering, plan limits, and add-on charges apply? Current deployment guidance, license, support terms, and pricing for your region and expected usage.

Be precise about the unit of each requirement. “Has budgets” is incomplete if you need budgets per team or key; “supports fallback” is incomplete if a particular provider failure must trigger it. Document the scope, trigger, and expected outcome so a trial can prove or disprove the requirement.

How can you evaluate alternatives without disrupting production?

Run a bounded evaluation with representative requests before moving production traffic. The goal is to establish that the candidate meets your essential requirements and to expose migration work, not merely to confirm that a sample request succeeds.

  1. Inventory current dependencies. Record SDK calls, gateway endpoints, model identifiers, provider credentials, virtual keys, budgets, rate limits, logging, and application assumptions. Mark which LiteLLM capabilities are essential and which are supplied by another system.
  2. Define acceptance tests. Specify expected behavior for normal requests, provider errors, timeouts, fallback destinations, rate limits, and cost or request attribution. Include the conditions under which the system must fail rather than silently send a request elsewhere.
  3. Check deployment and data handling. Confirm where the gateway runs, what request and metadata are retained, who can access them, and whether those terms match your requirements.
  4. Test credentials and billing. Establish whether the candidate uses your provider credentials or managed access, and confirm which account receives provider and service charges.
  5. Test the application path. Send representative requests through a non-production configuration. Compare response handling, errors, logs, and routing decisions with the behavior your application expects.
  6. Plan a reversible rollout. Keep a clear way to stop sending requests to the candidate and restore the previous route. Start with limited, non-critical traffic only after the acceptance tests pass.
  7. Recheck after launch. Watch failures, routing outcomes, usage attribution, and unexpected costs. Keep a named owner for configuration changes and incident response.

Do not treat a successful request as proof that migration is complete. The most consequential gaps often appear only during provider errors, access-control checks, usage attribution, or a rollback—not in a basic connectivity test.

What are the common mistakes when replacing LiteLLM?

Most selection problems come from treating “alternative” as a promise of full feature parity. A disciplined comparison makes the boundary of the replacement explicit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choosing by name recognition or an unverified ranking: the available alternatives lists are secondary comparisons, not an independently verified head-to-head test.
  • Assuming every AI gateway is equivalent: a proxy, managed model-access service, governance layer, and observability product may address different parts of the stack.
  • Ignoring the hosting boundary: self-hosted and vendor-managed approaches shift operational responsibility and request processing differently.
  • Comparing feature labels rather than behavior: verify scopes, triggers, and failure handling for retries, fallbacks, keys, budgets, and rate limits.
  • Relying on stale commercial details: prices, plan limits, metering, licenses, and add-on charges can change; confirm the current terms for your region and intended use.
  • Skipping migration and rollback tests: validate the actual application path, credentials, error handling, observability, and restoration plan before moving important traffic.

How should you make the final choice?

Shortlist only candidates that can meet your non-negotiable deployment, credential, routing, governance, and observability requirements. Then compare the operational burden and current commercial terms using primary vendor documentation; where a requirement cannot be verified, treat it as unresolved rather than assuming support.

If you need to replace LiteLLM’s Python SDK as well as its gateway, explicitly test the application changes required. If you only need managed access, governance, or observability, investigate whether replacing the whole routing layer is necessary. The right alternative is the one that passes your workload’s acceptance tests and fits your control requirements—not the one with the broadest unverified feature list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an OpenAI-compatible endpoint guarantee that my application will work unchanged?

No. A shared API shape does not establish that every parameter, streaming behavior, error response, or model identifier behaves identically. Validate the specific request and response patterns your application uses.

Do I need to move every model request to one gateway at once?

Not necessarily. A migration can be staged, provided your architecture and the selected service support the routing arrangement and you can monitor each path. Keep routing ownership and rollback responsibilities clear during any overlap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I know whether a routing layer is worth operating myself?

Compare the ongoing work your team would own—deployment, upgrades, availability, access, and incident response—with the control and deployment requirements you need. Include the maintenance burden in the decision, not only the initial setup.
