A lighter gaming mouse can feel easier to start, stop, and redirect, but the best available controlled comparison did not find a statistically significant aim-task advantage from a small weight change. In a 2023 study, 16 professional Overwatch players made fewer errors numerically with an 80 g mouse than an 87 g mouse, but the difference was not statistically significant. That result does not settle what happens when someone moves from a much heavier mouse to an ultralight model; it does mean grams alone are not evidence of better aim.
What did the study find about mouse weight and aim?
Wang and colleagues’ 2023 study found no statistically significant difference in pointing-task performance between the 80 g and 87 g mouse conditions it tested. The measured error rates were 8.65% at 80 g and 9.13% at 87 g (p=0.48), according to the published paper. The small numerical difference is not evidence that the lighter condition improved aim.

The distinction matters: a result that is not statistically significant does not prove that the mice are identical for every player or situation. It means this study did not establish a reliable performance difference under its specific conditions. It also cannot tell you whether a much larger change—such as moving from a heavy mouse to a roughly 50 g one—would affect your own accuracy.
The experiment involved 16 professional Overwatch players. All participants were male and right-handed. Researchers modified the same Logitech G Pro Wireless design to create four conditions: 80 g or 87 g, each tested wired and wireless. Hidden added weights and randomized condition order helped isolate the effect of weight while limiting order effects.

Participants first completed a Fitts-style pointing task at a fixed 800 DPI, then played active Overwatch for 10 minutes in each condition. Keeping the mouse design consistent was useful for studying weight specifically, but the short exposure and narrow participant group limit what the result can say about other players, other mice, or long-term comfort.
The paper, published in the International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics, concludes: “No statistically significant differences between mouse weight were found.” Its authors also note that a broader range of mouse weights should be studied. The research received Logitech support and NIOSH/CDC grant funding; those disclosures are relevant context, but funding alone does not establish that a result is biased.

A lower-mass mouse may feel easier to set in motion, redirect, or lift during repeated swipes. That is a reasonable expectation about how the movement feels, not a measured promise of more accurate flicks, better micro-adjustments, or higher scores. The cited comparison does not quantify an aim benefit from a large weight reduction.
Weight is only one part of the movement. A new mouse may also change the shape under your hand, its balance, grip, feet, cable or wireless connection, and how it moves across your pad. If several of those change at once, an improvement or setback cannot readily be attributed to weight alone.

Starting and stopping can feel especially different when the pad or feet change. A surface that glides more freely may make broad movements feel smoother but alter the amount of resistance you feel when stopping. If your hand slips, grip fit or grip material may matter more than shaving off a few grams. Treat those as separate fit and control questions, rather than assuming the lightest combination will suit you.
Early impressions are not the same as stable performance. Players have reported both feeling worse immediately after a switch and feeling better, but comments in a VALORANT discussion are anecdotes, not controlled results or a reliable adjustment timetable. Notice preference, comfort, and measured performance separately.
Does wireless make a mouse more accurate?
In the same study, the wireless conditions had a lower Fitts-task error rate than the wired conditions: 8.36% versus 9.41% (p=0.05). Participants also gave wireless a higher overall comfort rating (p=0.01). These results describe the tested conditions; they do not show that wireless transmission itself makes every mouse more accurate.
The wireless comparison may reflect the experience of using the setup, including the absence of a tether, rather than a general advantage of wireless technology. It is also distinct from the weight comparison: the paper did not find a statistically significant difference between 80 g and 87 g. Neither result establishes that a particular connection type or mouse will improve an individual player’s in-game aim.

What can product weights tell you?
Published weights help you judge how large a change you are considering, but they do not rank mice by accuracy. As of October 31, 2026, Razer described the Viper V4 Pro as approximately 49 g in black or 50 g in white, with a right-handed symmetrical shape optimized for claw and fingertip grips. Its manufacturer product page describes the model. Logitech’s manufacturer brochure specifies the PRO X SUPERLIGHT 2 at 60 g, with wireless connectivity and PTFE feet.
Those are examples of different weights and product characteristics, not evidence that a 49 g mouse aims better than a 60 g one. Razer’s September 2026 comparison identifies the Viper V4 Pro as its latest Viper generation and lists the Viper V3 Pro at 54 g in black. Logitech’s 2020 announcement of an original SUPERLIGHT weighing under 63 g is not the specification for the SUPERLIGHT 2.

- Hand and grip fit: Can you hold the shape naturally without reaching, pinching, or changing your usual grip?
- Size and balance: Does the mouse feel controllable through both broad swipes and small adjustments?
- Feet and pad: Does the combination let you start and stop in a way you can manage consistently?
- Connection: Would freedom from a cable change how you move the mouse?
- Settings: Can you preserve your effective sensitivity so the hardware change is not mixed up with a settings change?
- Repeated comfort: Does the fit remain comfortable over ordinary sessions, rather than only feeling exciting or unfamiliar at first?
Surface labels are manufacturer categories, not performance measurements. For example, Razer announced its Gigantus V2 Pro mat in March 2026 with five profiles—Max Control, Control, Balance, Speed, and Max Speed. Those names describe the company’s surface categories; they do not establish that a particular one improves aim. If stopping feel is the issue, comparing a control-oriented mat may be more relevant than changing mouse weight.

How can you make a fair comparison at home?
A useful personal comparison changes as few things as possible at once. The following is a suggested self-check based on the study’s controlled approach, not a published protocol proven to guarantee improvement.
- Keep your game and settings steady. Use the same game, in-game sensitivity, and mouse-pad area for each mouse. If you change sensitivity or other settings at the same time, you will not know which change affected the result.
- Check effective sensitivity. Do not assume that identical DPI labels will necessarily feel identical across devices. Use a sensitivity matcher or verify that the same physical movement produces comparable in-game movement; avoid changing Windows pointer settings mid-comparison.
- Use a repeatable task. Choose the same practice routine or comparable in-game activity for both mice. Record misses and completion time across repeated sessions, rather than judging a switch from one good or bad round.
- Track comfort separately. Note whether your hand stays secure and relaxed, and whether the shape or movement becomes uncomfortable. Do not treat comfort as proof of higher accuracy, or a short-lived unfamiliar feeling as proof that the mouse is worse.
- Change one factor at a time. If you also want to compare a different pad, feet, grip aid, or sensitivity, make that a separate comparison. Otherwise the source of any difference remains unclear.
- Decide using both results and fit. Consider whether any performance difference is consistent across sessions and whether the mouse is comfortable for the way you play. If the evidence is mixed, preference alone can still be a valid reason to choose one—but it is not proof of an aim advantage.
When is a lighter mouse worth considering?
A lighter model is worth considering if your current mouse feels cumbersome to move, you want to remove a cable from your movement path, or another shape better fits your hand. Those are reasons to evaluate a change, not guarantees that your aim or results will improve.

Keep the conclusion proportional to the evidence: a lighter mouse can change how movement feels, and a particular player may prefer that feel. The available controlled comparison did not demonstrate that an 80 g mouse improved pointing performance over an otherwise matched 87 g mouse.
